Description of Work: Thought I smelled gas and the water heater was making a thumping noise. Nope, there was no gas leak (opened mothball box was the culprit) and the thumping noise was caused by sediment in the bottom of my tank. They drained my tank, getting most of the sediment out. They cleaned up afterward and made sure that all was put back as they found it. They were both so very pleasant and the experience was very reassuring. And they charged me the minimal visit amount that had been quoted to me on the phone. I will definitely call them again!

Description of Work: A/C fan wasn't working, so I researched what the cause could be and called for service. I watched while the service was performed and technicial explained what he was doing and why. His solution was the same as I had researched and was a simple part replacement. I was afraid of calling just any company and getting told I needed a whole new unit since mine is 10 years old. This thankfully did not happen although I was advised the unit was old and would need replacement soon. However, its still running strong.

Description of Work: Removed old oil boiler (50 yrs old). Installed new gas boiler including some new piping hooked up to gas line. Removed oil tank. Follow-up visit to be sure it was working properly and get air out of pipes. Installed a new thermostat.

Description of Work: Background: Our 40 year old home was baseboard electric heat and an A/C system. Water is from a well and waste is a septic tank. So there is no water or sewer lines, nor natural gas. Oil is a potential hazard for the well so that was not used for heating. 40 years ago electricity was MUCH cheaper and baseboard heat allowed for individual room control as well as being easier to install than loads of duct work and a designated area for a furnace. The A/C unit was 20+ years old and failing for years. We kept it limping along until finally it would only hold a charge for less than 2 months. It was VERY inefficient and frustrating and our rising Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE) bill was a big motivator. I actually got another estimate from another recommended HVAC company on Angie's list but they were so unresponsive that it was clear that they did not want to do the work (perhaps too much of a hassle). Services: I contacted Grove and they were VERY interested in our HVAC problems. We initially needed a re-charge (on 7/6/2010) to get the system running properly again. They also found that our air handler filters were completely clogged! Then their technician found that our primary drain line was clogged and that our secondary drain (drains outside a window) was at least partially clogged as well as the pan beneath the air handler was filling with water. So they got us out of our initial crisis and we scheduled an estimate to replace the system. Grove Heating and Cooling Inc. is a family run business so one of the owner's sons actually came out and gave us the estimate and made recommendations. He wisely recommended replacement of the failing A/C only system with a brand new, highly energy efficient, Heat Pump system made by TRANE. This would help us financially as it would reduce costs in both the summer and the winter and there were existing incentives for home owners to get more efficient HVAC systems from both BGE and the Federal Government (taxes at the end of the year) for 2010 only (expire at the end of the year). So basically they gave us "the most bang for our buck". They also cautioned us that if the secondary drain line fails altogether the pan will overflow and we will damage the ceiling in our living room (air handler is in the attic). So due to the now emergent situation, failing A/C system in the middle of record heat summer and very real potential for severe damage to our home's interior, the replacement of the system had to be moved up. So there was only a few days time between estimate and actual installation. This usually messes up most HVAC folks - not these guys! They had an entire crew of 5-6 people in 3 trucks to handle this big job. Much to my liking ALL were intelligent, professional, and English was their first language. They seemed delighted to do the work - despite the absolutely oppressive heat (especially in the attic!). There were NO ILLEGAL ALIENS employed by Grove - this was VERY important! We are the second owners of our home and the original owners many times did things that saved money but were not the best quality or the longest lasting. The A/C system was no exception! In addition to taking on the challenge of a Heat Pump to replace an A/C system they had to do some serious detective work as well. Namely trying to figure out what was originally done and then changed to what it looked like when they got to it. Amazingly they were able to figure it all out and correct a great deal of it! So these were highly skilled installers and not just roughneck jobbers.

Description of Work: Our air handler was leaking water. Philip cut out the clogged piping and re-piped the drain. He also added a better trap system and a shut-off switch, so if there was a water leak in the future, the air handler will shut itself down rather than leak through to our kitchen ceiling. He also serviced the outside unit and added coolant.

Description of Work: Russel came out and serviced our A/C unit for the season. He was very courteous, knowledgeable, and patient. He took time out of his work to carefully explain to me what he was doing. I was so impressed with Russel that I signed up with Grove's annual maintenance program.
