A Len the Plumber repairman came out to fix a 4 year old toilet that would not stop running. The man quoted a price of $182, and said he needed to replace not just the fill valve (the problem), but also the supply tube because otherwise "it would be hard to make everything line up." Although it seemed like a lot of money to pay for the problem, I had him do the work and paid him. A few weeks later, I had a Len the Plumber repairman come out again to fix a clogged basement drain. After he snaked it ($239), I asked him to look at the stopper in my 4 year old bathroom sink because it no longer went up and down. He did, and he said that the ball rod had broken and rotted off. He said that in order to fix it, he would have to replace the entire assembly because it was hard to find the individual part (the rod). He said "it would be like finding a needle in a haystack." He quoted a price of $187 if he did the work that day, or $287 if he came back to do it another day, because that would be a new service call. Because it was so expensive, I told him not to fix it. The next day, I went to Home Depot with my broken rod, and asked the salesman if they sold replacements. He handed me a ball rod identical to the one I had. It cost $6.87. I went home, took out the old part, and put in the new one. It took me about 2 minutes (and I am about as technically challenged as they come). I wrote a letter of complaint to Len Bush, the owner, about my extreme displeasure with this experience. He did not respond. I will never use Len the Plumber again, and I would not recommend them to anyone. The actions of the employee and his excessively inflated quotes were appalling. In addition, the fact that the owner didn't bother to respond indicates to me that this type of pricing is not unique.
Description of Work: Fixed a toilet that would not stop running and snaked a clogged basement drain pipe.

Len the Plumber gave us a ridiculously high estimate. Thankfully, we obtained 3 other estimates and had the work done by someone else.
Description of Work: I called Len the Plumber for a leaky boiler in our basement. We have oil heat. The plumber that responded was very nice. He advised that we needed a brand new boiler, even though the one we had was only 10 years old. He gave us an estimate. It was shockingly high. He called later that day to advise that he had done some research and discovered that our boiler was still under warranty. Which was extremely considerate and nice. We obtained 3 other estimates and all were more than 50% less than Len The Plumber. We went with a different plumber and not only had a new boiler installed but, also a new electric hot water heater and a 2nd sump pump installed with a back up battery. The entire bill for all of those items was STILL much less than Len The Plumber's estimate for a new boiler. In addition, I am happy to report that the manufacturer of the old boiler is going to refund us $1,500!

I sent an email inquiry to Len the Plumber. They only send a service tech to the house after calling to confirm the appointment time. This is good if you keep your phone charged. They called 10 times in one morning. They did not show up when I scheduled them because they were not able to contact me directly that morning. This is a sound policy for a business but was a painful process for me because I was waiting at the house all day. I was unable to reschedule for that day or the next. They ended up coming out the next week. The tech was able to provide a quote in about 20-30 minutes by referring to a price guide he had. In other words, there was no room for discount or haggling of any sort. THE ESTIMATE COST MONEY - $50 just to have them show up. They deduct this from your total should you choose to use them for the work. (Although if I wasn't looking for it, or mentioned that I noticed it was not discounted, I would have gotten charged full price) I got an estimate on a sanitary leak and a gas leak. A few weeks later, I called back to arrange the gas leak work to be performed. The tech showed up on time after the early morning confirmation call. He performed the work quickly and with no disturbance to the residents or surroundings. He performed a soap test and provided advice about the dated stove. He was willing to help adjust some pieces on the stove to improve safety and functionality - a good bonus here. He wrote up the invoice on the spot. It needed to be revised once I pointed out the Estimate discount. Have not had any problems since.
Description of Work: Provided estimate for Sanitary leak and Gas leak. Repaired gas leak resulting from broken valve at the stove/appliance. Replaced valve. Replaced connection tubing. Performed soap test.

This is the second time I have had Len The Plumber service my house. I highly recommend serviceman Jim Long. Both times he has been prompt and professional. He thoroughly discussed the problems with me, what it would take to fix the problem, gave me a reasonable quote, and stuck to it, no changes. This visit was for a plumbing leak from an upstairs toilet into the basement. The serviceman identified the problem as a leaky seal and cautioned me that once he removed the toilet that it could also be the flange needed to be replaced but he wouldn't know until he removed the toilet. He set to work, removed the toilet and it was the flange. It was easy to see that the previous homeowners (do-it-yourselfers) had not seated the flange correctly and it was cracked. Jim set about to find fix the whole deal. When he was done, he explained everything he did and cleaned up. The job took about an hour and a half.
Description of Work: Installed new wax seal and cast iron flange underneath toilet.

We contacted Len the Plumber after Lowe's had bungled the installation of a gas water heater. After struggling with issues on the availability of the water heater type, special orders, etc., Len the plumber had a plumber out to the house within 3 hours of my call and had already made arrangements for the 'special order' water heater to be picked up the same day. Lowe's would have been 15% cheaper, but the availability and confidence in the Len the Plumber person made the decision easy. Our plumber not only replaced the water heater, but pumped and cleaned the leaking water, trimmed down unrelated rough-in pipes in the basement that were tripping hazards. On his way out, our recycling bin was blocking his truck truck from exiting. Rather than move it aside, he wheeled the bin back (20 paces) neatly to the front of my house instead. Great guy.

Great. We called early afternoon to see if they could get someone out and within a couple of hours the plumber was at our door. We were emailed a profile before the plumber arrived, so that we knew exactly who was coming out. Note that we had called another company earlier in the day and didn't hear back from the service manager of that company until well after the plumber for Len The Plumber had already made the repair and left (guess I won't be calling the other plumber again). Our plumber went to work immediately and had to use several different size snakes to get the drain clear. He did an outstanding job and was very courteous and knowledgeable.
Description of Work: Bathroom sink drain was stopped up. We attempted to plunge it ourselves and use a drain cleaner to no avail.

Upon receipt of a significantly high water bill, we contacted Len the Plumber to arrange a service call to identify a suspected leak. The technician from Len the Plumber, Chad, arrived on Friday, February 15th. His inspection determined that a leak was present in the poly blue line underground in the front yard. He explained what would be necessary to correct the problem and provided a written proposal outlining this work, which would include obtaining the necessary permits and inspection/approval by Anne Arundel County that the work had been completed to their satisfaction. An estimate of $4,477 was given at that time. This estimate included excavation inside the house if found to be necessary. If repairs could be completed with inside excavation, the estimate would be reduced. We called the plumbing office and requested that the work begin on Thursday, February 21. This date was confirmed. Chad and two additional workers arrived Thursday morning as planned to begin the work. Prior to their arrival, utility workers marked the location of the utility lines. Work began and progressed smoothly without the need to excavate inside the house. All work and cleanup was completed on that day. Since inside excavation was not needed, the original estimate was reduced by $400. We also had a coupon for $100 which allowed for a total price reduction of $500. Chad and the other workers from Len the Plumber could not have been more professional or respectful. Chad kept us informed of the progress and answered all of our questions. In addition, a representative from Len the Plumber followed up the next day to ensure that we were pleased with the work and to ask if we had any questions or comments. Based on this very favorable experience, we will not hesitate to call Len the Plumber for any additional plumbing work that may be needed.
Description of Work: There was a leak in the existing poly blue water service line that was replaced with a copper service line. This involved excavation of the front yard to install the new copper line from the house to the meter. At the completion of the work, the floor inside the house was sealed where the pipe comes through and a new shut-off valve was installed. The soil was replaced in the front yard and cleanup of the surrounding areas was performed.

They did a good job. They were quick (within 2hrs of calling them). The new one is working great. The old one was working slow and I thought it was a backup issue or something, but he explained that the toilet itself was innefficient and just not doing the job quickly. I was very happy with the service. I put N/A on price because I don't have a general reference on pricing.

After setting the original appointment for the afternoon/evening on Monday, they didn't arrive and my wife actually had to call them and ask what was wrong, and they said they were hung up on another job and had to reschedule on Tuesday. The same thing happened on Tuesday and they said they'd make us a "priority" for Wednesday. This was pretty off-putting (why wasn't I a priority before? what was the point of having an appointment? what if I had other things to do?), but when they finally did arrive on Wednesday he told me "it's going to be pricey" and told me it'd be $611. I asked how he came to that number, as the job was pretty straightforward - go from the cold water line, drill thru the cabinets, slide the electric stove out, and hook it up to the refrigerator. He explained they had an itemized list, and he was adding two things together. One was a standard price for the installing of the line to the icemaker, which entailed doing basically what was listed above. He said that it was "unusual" that he couldn't come from under my refrigerator since I had a finished basement and the copper pipe under my sink was too short and he'd have to do some extra work to make it fit. This part of the job was going to cost me about another $290 (I can't remember the exact price, but it was about half). This was confusing me, and I was actually thinking to myself it meant he didn't want the work. Adding an extra piece to the copper pipe would have taken a few minutes, tops. So I told him I'd think about it and declined the work, but when I thought about it, this job should have been half of what he wanted to charge, or less. I guess I paid that $49 to reinforce my aversion to ever paying for estimates in case this exact thing happens. I suppose had I accepted the price they would've done quality work, and maybe they have good prices for other services, but definitely not in this case.
Description of Work: I contacted them to have an estimate done to have a line on my icemaker installed. There was a $49 trip fee that's waived if you accept the work (either that or subtracted from the total cost - same thing). Honestly, I wouldn't have normally paid this (as others will do it for free, and not giving me a price range is up front is a pet peeve of mine) and I accepted it thinking it was going to be about a $300 job. When he arrived he quoted me $611 - I definitely balked and told them I'd need time to consider it, but it didn't take me long to rule that out. The price definitely drove me away and I was out the $49.

Jim with Len the Plumber arrived within service window expected, (he's been here before, so he is familiar with our plumbing) - explained what needed to be done, how long it should take, and got to work promptly. After issue was fixed, he also pointed out that circulator setting seemed to be too high, so adjusted that and explained how system should work. (No charge for this extra help.) Problem solved and area left tidy and cleaned up.

Avoid at all costs!! Will never use them again. We had our main drain clogged. Emergency call was great, plumber came right out and tried to snake the drain. Main problem was with the county line, but our line also had an obstruction County cleared the main, and the plumber snaked our line, but he said it needed to be inspected because it was not totally clear. Camera operator told us our line was broken, and needed to be replaced. He said it was so bad we shouldn't use toilet paper until it was replaced! Since we were going out of town in 2 days, we couldn't shop around. We were given a price of $4,000 (in addition to the $400 we paid for the initial call) to replace the line, which he said would require digging out the old line well into the woods and take all day. The next day, two guys showed up, on time as promised. They dug out the old line, which was 10 foot long before joining the county line and was only under the lawn and not into the woods. They found that it wasn't broken but had hardened roots at the bottom. They replaced the line and were on their way in 2 hours. 2 guys, 2 hours, small backhoe $4,000! So, the camera operator was wrong, our line was not broken. It was only blocked at the bottom portion of the line and could have waited. It had probably been that way for years, and the only reason we noticed a problem was because the county line had been clogged further down. Had the camera operator been competent, or honest, he would have detected this and given us honest answers. We might have had the line replaced anyway, or snaked again, or used chemical agents, but because he told us it was broken, and unusable, and we were going out of town in 2 days, we were stuck. They could have been honest and said the line wasn't broken and in immediate need of replacement, and was easier to fix than expected, and adjusted the bill. Learn from our mistake, and go elsewhere!
Description of Work: Sewer line snaked, camera inspected, then replaced based on camera operator's statement that the line was broken and unusable.

Excellent and professional job. They were able to respond very quickly. In checking all gas pipe joints, identified a gas leak on BGE side of meter, which had been missed by BGE. Based on some confusing info from BGE, had to return a second day and made sure I was first job of the day. Very patient in answering my questions and clarifying situation. Chris was an absolute pleasure to work with and did a great job. Have used Len the Plumber before for more routine plumbing issues, and have always been pleased with their service.
