Very well. Contractor very responsive, worked with vehicle's insurance company to clarify their questions/issues relating to work to be done. Work completed in one day, just days before first snowfall. Wall replaced with granite installed in concrete footing and looks fantastic. Can't wait for the snow to melt and the flowers to bloom against this new wall!
Description of Work: Removed concrete/stone retaining wall damaged by hit and run vehicle that borders 50 feet of landscaped flower bed.

Bruno responded very quickly to our urgent quote request as more snow was on the way with no place to put it. We handled contract paperwork easily via email. We scheduled the job with him late on Friday night and his crew was at our house Monday morning. He called ahead to let me know crew was running a little late due to traffic, and checked in periodically via phone to make sure everything was ok. Crew was friendly and courteous, and did just what we asked them to do.
Description of Work: They removed 2 truck loads of snow from our large 4 car driveway, and did some snow clean-up in prep for coming storm.

We recently hired Masonworks to do our snowplowing (driveway and sidewalks). We met Bruno when getting quotes for a retaining wall job, and were impressed with his communication, reliability, knowledge, and professionalism. Also, he was easy to talk to, polite, and client-oriented. We ended up hiring another company for the wall job, but hired Masonworks for their snowplowing services and have been very satisfied. They've done 3 snowplowing jobs so far this winter, and compared to other companies we have worked with in the past they do a better job (more conscientious and complete) and their prices are within range of other similar companies. Importantly, they are easily reachable by phone or email and quickly return calls. We will likely hire them for other jobs including masonry in the future.

We own a 100 year old house that had had a long brick walkway and steep brick steps up to the front door. We've patched loose bricks before, but now there were a lot of them and we knew we needed more than a simple repair. After meeting with five masonry companies, we hired Masonworks to tackle the job. And we definitely made the right decision. Jeff got back in touch with us promptly and scoped out the job making a number of recommendations based on our likes and budget. He was not the first mason we met with, but he was the first back with an estimate as well as photos or similar jobs like ours. Once we chose Masonworks, we got on their schedule and approximately two weeks later a four-person crew showed up to begin work. The Masonworks crew was fantastic. Hard working, respectful or the property and of us and cleaned up after the job every day. They demo'd the existing brick work and cement foundation and hauled it away. Installed braces to support the entry way roof then went to work installing the new steps and sidewalk. This included digging out and laying foundation for four steps from the road to a long sidewalk and then six steps and platform to the front door. When Jeff tells you he's going to do something, he comes through, no problem. We ended up replacing the brick walkway and two sets of brick stairs with granite and stone risers. It looks fantastic and really is a grand entry way to our house. We highly recommend Masonworks and they are our first choice for our future masonry and landscape projects.

We have now had a chance to live with the work for the past two months and are very happy with the finished product. It has successfully kept water from the upper level from flooding to the lower level and looks terrific. We have received many compliments on the work. The work was overseen by Bruno and a team of 2-3 guys who worked tirelessly, especially Ivan. I would definitely go back to them if I ever need any additional work performed.
Description of Work: We recently moved into a ground floor unit in Boston with direct access to a sunken patio supported by a railroad tie retaining wall and with a non-porous concrete paver patio above. Soon after moving in we realized that the slope of the patio was causing water to cascade from the upper level to the lower patio where it would pool and slowly drain into a dry drain. The system was frequently overwhelmed in the heavy storms this summer and our unit nearly flooded on more than one occasion. We contacted MasonWorks to devise a better system that would keep all water from the upper level from flooding the lower level and be more visually appealing. They replaced the railroad tie retaining wall with a 4' high concrete wall with a bluestone facade, replaced the concrete paver patio with a permeable stone surface called gravelok and changed the grade of the patio to slope away from the house.

Jeff was prompt, organized and thorough during planning. his proposal was more extensive than one of the other bids i received, and i ended up accepting his bid even though it was more expensive. His team was quick, neat and prompt. They didn't speak a lot of English, which made occasional communication awkward, but Jeff was always in touch via phone if needed. Jeff phoned me up in order to make a small change order ($80 cap). I appreciated the contact. If you are very particular about getting everything exactly right, I recommend telling Jeff beforehand. He & his team made a decision or two that affected appearance where I was surprised they decided without talking to me. However, I was happy with the results, so there was no issue. The project ended quickly and as planned. When a new door installation came loose, Jeff had someone at the site within the day to resolve the problem. I am very happy with the work and would use Jeff and MasonWorks again!
Description of Work: Jeff's team replaced a garage wall that had been collapsing due to tree roots, repointed multiple other walls and replaced two portions of additional outdoor walls.

We loved our experience working with Masonworks. Jeff was very organized and punctual. His estimate came in the middle of the three estimates we obtained. We decided to use his company largely because he came up with a creative solution to solve our problem, instead of just giving us a quote on what we initially requested. We felt that he really thought about what was best for the house and the yard. His workers are very professional as well - arrived on time, worked in an organized fashion, quiet, and polite. They worked very hard. The ultimate work product that produced is error-free. The patio bricks were precisely laid. The retaining wall was built. We will be thrilled to use the new grass field as soon as the grass grows more. At the end of the project, we got a warranty from Jeff that guarantees work for 10 years. We would love to use them again if we need to do similar projects.

Jeff of Masonworks was very responsive, returned calls and emails promptly and was the fastest of all contractors selected in producing a bid (and revisions to the bid - the condo board changed the scope of the work after Jeff submitted his initial bid and he resubmitted it with the requested changes in two business days). He was also very upfront about the limitations of a snowmelt system for the stairs that several unit owners had requested (he was more concerned about our happiness with the finished product than with trying to sell us additional things that would only half-work). While their quote was not the lowest, it was reasonable compared to the four other bids received. Ultimately I was not able to use Masonworks because the condominium board voted to go with the lowest bid. However, they will always get a bid request from me in the future because of their responsiveness and candidness.
Description of Work: Our self-managed condominium sought bids for having crumbling cement stairs and walks removed and having a new set of bluestone stairs and walkways installed.

I was impressed by Jeff as he assessed my step. Rather than gloss over the need for a new foundation, he told me what he thought I needed and talked me out of other stuff I thought I needed but didn't. His quote for thorough and professional. They started work quickly after the quote was signed. The only hiccup was that they did not take the old foundation out at first and build much of the step on the old foundation. I called that evening, and someone was out in 45 minutes. They apologized profusely, seemed genuinely concerned, and the next day they restarted the work fresh (demolishing all they had done). From there on out everything was perfect. Out of what I thought was going to be a hard thing, came an increased respect for Jeff and his crew. My step looks great. They worked clean and hard. Masonworks is my mason from now on.

The entire experience of building with MasonWorks was wonderful. Jeff responded quickly to the initial call for an estimate, and came right over to visit the site. He clearly wanted the work and wanted to do a great job of it. He took the plans home and brought a detailed estimate within the promised time. Jeff immediately gave references to multiple sites he'd built in town, with advice on which stones and pavers he would recommend. In each case his recommendations looked the nicest. It became clear that we could rely on his judgement for materials and design choices. We had a couple places where the design was incomplete and Jeff had to use his own judgement, for instance when adding walkways up the grade in a side yard. In every case he did the A+ job and exceeded our expectations of how good it could look. When installing the garden beds, Jeff pointed out that the old soil under the driveway was sterile and would yield poor flowers. He advised putting 18" of topsoil into the beds, which has really helped the plants get established. Jeff was extremely reasonable in all negotiations. Where another contractor might wrangle for the last dime and leave you unhappy, Jeff would never leave a negotiation until every issue was resolved to satisfaction. Finally, the end product is beautiful. We're enjoying it every time we walk from the house, or sit on the patio enjoying our new outdoors.
Description of Work: Jeff Souza and MasonWorks replaced a large unsightly driveway with a new patio, gardens, walkways and driveway. The new patio is about 1000 sq. ft. of pavers with cobblestone edging, plus four new flower beds with all plants installed. The new driveway holds four cars comfortably. The end product is gorgeous, the work is all top quality, and the building experience was very comfortable. I'd hire Jeff again in a minute to do any significant hardscaping, masonry or landscaping job of any size.

The crew was very professional, neat and completed all of the work in the stated timeframe. People driving down the street were stopping at my house and looking at the workmanship and taking down the Masonworks information- that's how impressive this job was! Any questions I had- Jeff responded within 24 hours either via email or phone. I would highly recommend Jeff and his crew for this type of job- they do a very difficult and tedious job with ease and no headache for the homeowner. Great Job Jeff and Masonworks!

This was a very difficult job and there were some tough times and frustration on all ends. But the job came out as good or better than we expected. This is a job where other contractors who were brought in during quote were clearly shocked/worried and was close to no quote. The process started over 2 years ago, and over a dozen contractors were brought in for quotations and their plan to fix the lot. Jeff was one of three people we narrowed it down to for cost and capability. He was not chosen due to a better, personnel recommendation for another contractor. That contractor did not work out and no progress was made over 12 months beyond a land survey. Process re-started this spring, we changed the plan from SRS segmental retaining system (Ideal Block, Allen Block, etc...) because we saw so many failed (and ugly) block walls. To our surprise the mortared wall was not a significant cost difference. We chose Jeff to do a mortared field stone wall that we knew would look a lot better. Early in the build process, Jeff was instrumental in helping to resolve some property line issues. The repaired wall is partially on the neighboring lot and this provided plenty of headaches and worries. Ultimately a mutually acceptable solution for all was found and project moved ahead. He even was the notary public on the agreements signed. The build started late and lasted longer than expected. The late start was no surprise due to the weather and is not atypical in any business dealings I've had. The longer build period was mostly due to the inability to bring in any motorized equipment. To us the time on the project is less important than having things done correctly. There was a 1-2 week period where it was hard to get real time communications with Jeff probably because of other jobs. During this period, there were some things done by his crew that were not to the contract. After Jeff was aware of these, they had to be pulled out and re-done correctly. I should have been mad, but his quick and decisive correction of the problem won me over. Responsiveness was much improved after that. As the project neared completion and things started taking shape, it was starting to look very nice and well built. There are no shortcuts I can find or signs of sloppiness. Each face is smooth and uniform, the tops are all level and smooth enough to wall on. The stairs are tight, aligned and perfectly leveled. Overall, it's just a well put together design and execution of masonry and hardscapes. Finishing touches include the replacement of deck stairs. I was impressed that he didn't balk at the fact that my deck was mahogany and not just pressure treated. I was impressed at how well he cleaned up the remaining dirt pile and how much he spent out of pocket to replace the pachysandra he covered. Everything was done on budget, according to the contract. He owes me $10, his guys walked off with 2 hose nozzles.
Description of Work: Steep hill work site at rear of home. House is on reverse grade so retaining walls in place to create level areas and walkways in the rear. Also serves as anchor to foundation, walk out basement is 4' above grade. Steep grade and over grown lot meant all work done by hand and wheel barrow. No heavy equipment or even Bobcats. Removal of previous owner DIY rotted and non-code pressure treated retaining wall and stairs. Approximately 12' at highest to 5' in middle tier and about 40-50 linear feet. Removal of 4' stacked stone wall. Temporary removal of deck stairs tied to retaining wall and steps. Constructed mortared fieldstone 3 tier wall system to replace rotted wall. Each segment 4' tall with concrete footer (total height needed about 12'). Overall length approx. 80-90'. Stacked stone wall replaced with mortared stone wall 4' tall. This wall was extended along the North side of the house to create a more stable walk way and slow done erosion. Total length about 70'. Key steps for wall survival discussed in quoting, quoted, called out in contract and executed in construction. Wall backed with 18" section of 1" washed gravel for drainage, covered in geotextile fabric to slow down dirt filling in. Drainage pipes at the vase of the wall with small outlets in face off the walls. Pressure treated wood stairs replaced with blue stone treads, 4' wide. Stairs cut into walls and connect all the tiers. Deck stairs replaced to meet new layout. Mahogany was used to properly blend with the existing deck materials. On the North side where wall was extended, an aggregate walkway was put in to create a smoother and better looking hardscape. This area is where grass is impossible to maintain and only weeds can thrive. Stepping stone were interspersed in aggregate to break up the monotony. In lower area where fill was dumped, the hill was planted with pachysandra ground cover to stabilize and also create an attractive look. Lawn areas that were damaged by walking or storage of materials were aerated, new soil brought in and re-seeded. Re-establishment of lawn has been spotty, but summer conditions and low watering were tough.

The MasonWorks guys are awesome. Their price, while not the best, was competitive, and I would use them again in a heartbeat. They did the entire job in just a few days, were extremely professional and prompt, completely cleaned up the work site at the end of every day, and were very responsive to questions and scheduling constraints. It's more than worth it to pay a bit more to get the kind of service they offer. A pleasure from start to finish, and the wall now looks fantatstic.
Description of Work: Masonworks tore out and replaced an 110' retaining wall holding up our multi-family house, its associated walkway, and installed pipes for better drainage. The wall is approximately 2' high. The work included completely removing the old mortared rock wall and its walkway along the entire side of our house. They also broke up a lot of crumbling concrete from previous attempts at repair. They installed a properly drained wall out of segmented blocks, with a crushed rock footing and drainage pipes behind, along the whole side of the house. They replaced the walkway with a brushed concrete walkway that met our existing front steps smoothly, with no lip. This work also included ~$900 to install drainage pipes on another side of our house to fix water problems we were having.

Bruno and Jeff at Masonworks were a pleasure to work with. Multiple visits were made prior to the start of the job to confirm the scope of work and the materials to be used. Responses were always quick and clear as were the quotes. They were actually ready to perform the work sooner than I expected and once the start date was confirmed they arrived as promised and completed the project with only a minor weather delay. Everyone in the crew was polite and professional. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Rebuilt the stairs down into the half basement including: Reset loose bricks on both sides, replaced the top limestone tread, and repointed the sidewalls. Installed a new walkway with interlocking pavers including: Removed the existing asphalt walkway and the concrete pads around the stairs, excavated 8" deep, installed a geo-textile to prevent weed growth, installed 5" of crusher run (road base) compacting every 2", installed a layer of leveling sand, installed new pavers, cut the edges and set borders on concrete, applied polymeric sand to finish. Leveled the side alley between houses and installed 2' of stone dust and compacted it.

We called Mr. Souza to estimate the cost of repairing a small water feature. We made an appointment and stayed home to meet him. Two days later, when he did not show up or reschedule, we called again to find out what happened. He apologized and said he would reschedule the visit. There are some projects where you feel like you definitely got your money's worth. As an avid DIY guy I was deluded into thinking I might be able to take this project on myself. After watching the MasonWorks crew grind, hammer, saw and sweat for 4 hours I was glad I called in the professionals. My only complaint is that the demo did some minor damage to the siding wrapped door. It's not a huge deal, but adds to the overall cost of the project.

Jeff Souza of Masonworks came out to perform the estimate, he was very professional and discussed various options with me. In addition to the work listed above we had him quote for other odd jobs that we were thinking of doing as a condo association and he was more than happy to quote on these as well even though we were not looking to have the work done anytime soon. As for the work that was done, the guys that came out to do the work were very professional, did exceptional work and went above and beyond in the cleanliness department. I don't think our front steps have ever been so clean (even the ones they did not work on). The new stones were matched perfectly and the chimney work was very well done. Whenever I had questions I got a quick response by email from Jeff and phone calls were always answered. I would highly recommend Masonworks for any masonry needs.
Description of Work: We needed two large limestone steps replaced and another reset on the steps leading to the entrance to our building, which also required the resetting of 3 railings. We also needed re-pointing of the base of a chimney in our basement and the addition of two chimney caps on the roof.

We expected to have to wait weeks for a start date for this job. We got a call the night before to say they could start the next day. This suited us and we were very excited to get the job done before the end of summer. Four guys showed up and did back breaking work digging out the compacted dirt and roots from our backyard. It took 3 and half days to do it. It was a pleasure to look out the window and watch them work. The quality of the work was superb. We are the envy of the neighbors. It was so nice to work with Masonworkz, they are true professionals and we still can't believe how they transformed our backyard.

It went very well. The wall was rebuilt with the proper drainage (which our wall did not originally have). Since the same stones were used, the repair work blends in perfectly with the existing portions of the wall. The workers cleaned up at the end of every day.
Description of Work: MasonWorks demolished and rebuilt a portion of our stone wall using the same stones. 1 step was rebuilt and another step was repaired. Other portions of our wall were repaired. Jeff came out quickly to give us a quite, arrived on time and thoroughly and efficiently assessed what was needed. Soon after we agreed to have the work done, his crew came out to do it. The men were polite, skilled, and worked hard. All of the work was completed n two (long) days. The foreman walked through with us to make sure everything was done well before asking for final payment. It looks great. We are particularly pleased at the little details - the new bricks are well-matched to the old ones, the concrete sidewalk is set to drain correctly all along, and they made some suggestions to keep our drywell functioning longer.

Jeff's quote was very good, and based on his Angie's list references, I went with him. His staff showed up at the appointed date/time, and worked diligently and cleanly. When the basement wall was torn out, Jeff discovered that a tree root had infested the basement wall, and was damaging the main beam. He called me immediately and explained that he would need to install a lally column to support the main beam. I was expecting a huge bump in the price at that time, but was very pleasantly surprised by his reasonable additional quote. A week later, the job was done. On cue, there was a big storm a few days later, and the basement was dry!
Description of Work: We had water flowing into our basement this spring through the back concrete wall. Masonworks dug a trench in the backyard, inserted a drainage pipe, and covered it with stone, to direct the water coming down the sloping grass away from the house. They then rebuilt the basement wall from the inside, and inserted a lally column to support the main beam.

Cheapest of 4 estimates. The quality of their work exceeded my expectations. Their communication was excellent. I received updates, and they beat their proposed deadline to finish their work. They were very honest and straight forward about limitations of their work, i.e. the new bricks might not match perfectly, (but they did). They came up with very clever solutions to challenges to rebuilding the wall including rebuilding part of it under an aluminum garage. I would definitely hire them again.
Description of Work: Masonworks rebuilt a crumbling retaining wall and rebuilt the railing and tidied up our front steps.

I had a few different quotes for the re-pointing and Masonworks actually came in on the higher end. However after reading their reports on angie's list and meeting with Jeff I decided it was worth the small exta cost to make sure it is done right the first time. Jeff Souza was on time for our meeting and was availble for questions whenever I had them. The project was finished on time and was done very well. I would definitely use them again. In fact I hired them to put in a patio the following week!
Description of Work: Masonworks staged, cut and re-pointed the brick front of my home (370 SF) along with the top half of my chimney (90 SF). They also applied two coats of breathable sealer to both areas. They cleaned and removed all debris.
