Contractor originally provided me an estimate that was below other estimates for similar work. Initial impressions were favorable. However, upon further contact - the contractor insisted that the repairs he would be doing would be a waste of money and that the appropriate course of action would be to tear down the entire structure and rebuild a new one. The increase in estimate was 5x the original estimate. After consulting a number of other contractors (Renaissance Masonry, for one) - I concluded that this contractor's opinion (that the stairs were sinking) was inaccurate. I understand that everyone has the right to their own opinion, but when this contractor couldn't specifically tell me what about the structure signaled to him that the steps were sinking - I felt that I was being duped. Buyer beware.
Description of Work: Repoint two steps, replace a bluestone step, general repairs to the existing brick steps.

Response from MasonWorks LLC
Let's get the facts straight: this gentleman is lying. He called me one morning and asked me to head to his house and look at the steps. It was an emergency he said. I went their house and as I was looking at the steps his wife, which had left when I arrive, came back and I introduced myself to her and told her my motives of been there. I explained to her what could be done and told her that I didn't feel comfortable repairing the steps, even though I would give a quote to do so along with a quote to rebuild the steps, and I wouldn't give any warranty on the repair as I couldn't not know what was actually causing the sinkage of the bottom step.. She told me that they did'n't care if the work wouldn't last as they were about to sell the house and wanted just a quick fix and that the problem would be the next owners. I sent a quote for the repair and also for the rebuilding of the steps. I never met Member myself and I do not know how come he had an initial favorable impression of myself. I met his wife for about 3 minutes which is not enough time to have a profile built of anyone. It is important to say that I do not have a crystal ball and cannot know hidden facts. It is also important to state that I will not blamish my reputation by engaging in a repair that will fail later on the road. I refuse to do a bad job, even when the actual owners are about to sell their property and want to pass on to someone a problem which is theirs and theirs only (after all they lived on the house and used the steps, why should someone pay for it now?). I do not believe in these kind of acts. I couldn't live with this. We have to be aware, as Member state on his comments of me, I agree: we have to be aware with people who do not care if someone will inherit a problem that actually belongs to them. I will not partake on these kind of actions and I am proud of thinking like so and acting like so. I will always do the right thing even if I have to pay the higher price at the end. Just check out what people who hired us have to say about us. Those are the people who have true information about who we really are and how we go about our business, how honest, reliable and fair we actually are.

Jeff Souza has bulit a business based on attentiveness to the customer. He met with me 2-3 times to review what it was that I wanted and provided me estimates within 24 hours. I didn't even get any other quotes as I was so impressed with his responsiveness. Once work commenced I was introduced to Bruno who met me every morning to insure that I was happy with the work and review what would be going in that day. We had not even planned to put in a wall and about half way through the work we decided to go ahead with this new project..it was being installed the next day. I would call Bruno in the evenings with questions and he always either picked up or returned my calls immediately. The mason work is beautiful and was completed in an unbelievably timely manner. I have never seen people work so hard all day.

The driveway is beautiful. Very Patient defining the job with us, 4 trips to our home to get initial quote/scope of service the way we wanted it. Method of laying the bed for our driveway pavers is superior to other 2 companies we had give quotes, also very good at explaining the details of their bed laying process. This was a difficult job on busy street, they took care of all the dealings with the town of Winthrop including a 3 day police detail and all permits - A+ In addition to all of the above they simply had the best price of 3 companies that quoted, very clean at the end of each day of work - no left over debris.
Description of Work: Removed old decaying drive way made of concrete, Home Depot Cement tiles and timbers. Dug out appx 18 inch bed Laid bed of river stones, gravel and retaining mesh. Installed Pavers. Replaced cap on concrete wall, appx 70 Feet.

Masonworks was very responsive and professional when I contacted them. They came by my home and I showed them where I wanted the wall built and few features I wanted the wall to have. I left the rest of the design up to them. I was told work would begin in about 2 weeks and it did. It took only 2-3 days to finish. The workmen were very professional and showed expertise in what they were doing. The wall came out beautiful. People walking by have commented on how nice looking it is. They did a really great job of blending and fitting it in to the surrounding area

We had a small *backyard* area that consisted of poorly paved asphalt, and wanted to create a new outdoor living space, including putting in a patio. We hired MasonWorks to excavate the existing asphalt and install a 12x27 patio with pavers. We had a lot of concerns regarding the grading of the patio due to flooding issues in our basement with the existing surface. Jeff spent a lot of time speaking with us, describing the process and allaying our concerns about the flooding. We were really impressed with his level of knowledge and felt very comfortable hiring him to do the work. Jeff's crew worked very quickly; the entire job was done in 2.5 days. It is impossible to access our backyard with heavy equipment, so all of the asphalt *up to 10" thick in some spots) was dug up by hand and removed in buckets. While excavating the backyard, some issues with our foundation were discovered (which we were expecting due to the flooding issues in the basement)...some crumbling brick and a hole from an old casement window that had just been filled with an insulation type material (?%#!!). Jeff's crew neatly repaired the foundation/window space with concrete and it now has a nice finished look. The cost for this extra work was very reasonable. As for the patio work, we were really impressed with the attention to detail and how expertly the patio was graded. There were a number of pavers that needed to be cut in order to fit properly. We have not had any issues with flooding or leaks in the basement since the patio was laid. Jeff's crew and foreman, Bruno, were all very professional, polite, and responsive and worked long hours to get the job done. The crew cleaned up the space after each work day. We are extremely pleased with the finished product and plan to give MasonWorks a call when we finally get around to doing something about driveway and stone steps in the front of our house.

MasonWorks did a great job plowing our driveway and coming through at a difficult time. We called them on the morning of one of the biggest snowfalls of the year - they were able to add us to their plowing schedule on the same day!! We also called a few of the other highly-rated Snowplow services on Angie's list - one never called us back, and one did call back and said they'd soon follow up with an estimate, but we never heard from them again even though we left several more messages. Not only did Masonworks come through for us where their competition failed - but they gave us an estimate based on our description of the driveway. We accepted the estimate which seemed reasonable. After completing the work, Masonworks told us that the space was smaller than they had expected so they reduced the price! How is that for honesty and customer service? The quality of their removal service was excellent - they were able to plow the driveway and shovel the walks, and left no ice anywhere. In short, we are very impressed with Masonworks and will be happy to use them again in the future. **Update 2015 - They have been plowing for us for several years now, they remain professional, dependable, and good to work with. Even in the worst winter in a century, they were able to get us plowed out and had the driveway in good shape all winter long. You can't go wrong with this crew.

I hAd a family emergency on the day I set up the meeting with the gentleman and had horrible phone reception where I was at. Sorry I forgot to call afterward. It is really my fault but I also have had canceled meetings with other clientes and never had this kind of atitude towards them. I usually call again since any one of us can either ahve an emergency or we can forget to call back. LIFE IS BUSY SOMETIMES AND SOMETHINGS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN OTHERS... As for been unprofessional ask the other over 100 people who palce a report for us - We are extremely professional but at the same time we are human beeings who have children, family, family problems. I would consider myself a pretty picky customer with a lot attention to detail. After a lot of research and quotes from various people we decided to go with MasonWorks because of their responsiveness, price and overall knowledge. Both Jeff and Bruno were extremely personable and very easy to work with. During the job whenever I had a question or concern I could call Bruno and he'd either pick up immediately or call back within the hour. At one point I had noticed that the front walkway was not being laid in the pattern we discussed, without even asking Bruno intended on starting it over from scratch but we decided to keep it as is since we ended up liking the existing patten - I was just impressed he offered to do it with no question or attitude. During the entire job whenever I'd request something to be done or covered differently than originally discussed, it was immediately done. The crew works extremely fast, starting early in the morning and working well into the evening. They were here a total of 4 days and at the end of each day left the site as clean as possible. The only thing I hadn't taken into consideration and was a little bit of a surprise was all the materials from the job and for the job were staged on the driveway. Which made sense and probably normally is not an issue however our driveway was new, installed less than a year ago, so at the end of it all it took a bit of a beating with some scratches, marks, etc.. It was swept clean at the end of the job however. The patio and walkway themselves came out beautifully, with excellent quality and detail. I was concerned how the patio would tie into the driveway / fence line and discussed this with Bruno and Jeff in detail. What they ended up doing exceeded my expectations and was extremely happy how it turned out. Overall, an excellent experience.. very easy to work with, show a genuine concern of what you're looking for and above all honest people. They'll be the first on our call list for any future work we're looking to have done.
Description of Work: Installed a patio off the back of the house where only grass was originally. Excavated and prepped the entire area with the proper base materials for pavers. Removed an old concrete walkway leading up to the front door, installed new walkway with same pavers as used with the patio.

These guys are great. If you need masonry work done, call them. End of story. They are professional, do quality work and do what they say.The front brick steps to our house were falling apart. When Jeff came by to evaluate the job, he explained what needed to be done and why. He is knowledgable, friendly, and answered all of my questions thoroughly. When it came time to do the work, the crew showed up on time, were efficient, respectful of the property, and removed all debris. It took one day to replace a four step entrance, cover with bluestone, and repoint the leading walkway. The result is a beautiful, extremely well-made example of masonry. There is nothing about the work that I would question. As far as a contracting job goes, it was the best work done on my house. There is no reason to look for anyone else.

Masonworks was one of three estimates that I got to do the work. Jeff Souza came out within a day or two of my initial inquiry. He was prompt, professional and made me feel very at ease with the process and timeline. His quote was not the cheapest of the three, but his professionalism and my comfort level with him and their process was more important to me than price. They started work about 4-5 weeks after we signed the contract (we had a big rain delay!!). It took Leo and his crew about 5 1/2 days to totally complete the job. They always cleaned up when they left for the day which I was very appreciative since I wanted to be mindful of my neighbors. After the job was complete, Jeff came out to review the job with me. Overall, I was very satisfied with the process and would highly recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: I live in Boston and have a sunken patio that was partially bricked, but had a border where ivy was growing up the walls of neighboring buildings. There is also a bricked walked way between my yard and the street that was severely uneven and unsafe. Due to rodents living under the ivy, they removed the ivy and rebricked the entire alley and backyard. Also, they did some repointing and replacing of damaged bricks on the walls of our building.

Jeff Souza was very responsive, came out to the house twice to answer questions, give us a quote. The work was professional, the guys who did the work were pleasant, neat, cleaned up everything every day. The job took exactly as long as they said it would. Bruno called to let us know what was happening and when they would be back to finish the job. We came home after a day away to find the steps completely finished, the equipment and old steps hauled away, everything cleaned up beautifully and we love the elegant new entrance to our house. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.
Description of Work: Masonworks replaced our rotting wood steps, front porch and columns with beautiful new stone steps, bluestone treds and landing, and mahogany railings. Columns are synthentic so they won't rot again.

It was a joy working with Jeff and Bruno. I tend to obsess over details and Jeff responded to all of my concerns promptly and in a great amount of detail. Their quote was in line with another service provider and much less expensive than a third. Based on their prompt response to our questions and the initial quote, we decided to go with their company. We selected our color pavers and they arrived within the week to get started. The group of guys had major challenges to deal with on our property (up on a hill - no easy access to the yard), but they dealt with all the difficulties beautifully and without complaint. They worked quickly, quietly, and made sure that at the end of each day, they were leaving the area as clean and organized as possible. We ran into a few issues, wrong color pavers delivered for one palate, a lot of efflorescence coming through in the end - both were dealt with quickly and professionally. Bruno came to discuss options for resolving the color issue personally and we were able to make an informed decision with his advice. Overall the work was completed quickly, and in the end the project looks lovely.
Description of Work: We had an over 700 Square foot patio built with Cambridge Pavers. The job included removing bedrock, removing a garden bed, placing large drains, leveling the area, ensuring the tilt of the patio is headed away from the house as opposed to towards it, replacing dirt, and reseeding the new earth.

They were so awesome. They were recommended to me by my neighbor, who had used them twice. I was very impressed with how knowledgeable and practical Jeff Souza was. He listened as I explained all the different problems we were having (garage floor cracked and leaking, soggy sections in lawn) and he proposed excellent solutions that I could tell were the right way to do it. (As a contrasting example, one contractor proposed I just pour fresh concrete over the cracked existing concrete!) They started the work several weeks after I first met with Jeff. Bruno oversees the job and is there every day, all day. (Bruno was also very professional, knowledgeable and wonderful to work with.) They have a large crew who work with them; they work very hard and efficiently for long hours. I was so impressed with how fast they were able to finish our rather large job. As they started digging under the garage and in our lawn, they found more water than they had expected. (Frankly, it didn't surprise me!) They proposed expanding and deepening the lawn drainage system and we agreed that it would be necessary to really correct the problem. With the lawn drainage system and everything else, they really went the extra mile to do the job right. (e.g. Bruno had the guys tie in all of our gutters so they water would flow straight out through the drainage.) The finished product looks really great. I have had several neighbors comment on how great the driveway and granite pavers look. We are really happy with the high quality, professional work they did. I would use them again in a heartbeat.
Description of Work: They did a lot! Demolished old garage floor and poured new concrete; installed drainage and a sump pump in in the garage; demolished and repaved the asphalt driveway; added granite pavers along driveway edge; installed french drain in the lawn around the perimeter of our house; repaired cracks in the foundation walls; and removed a shrub and old water feature.

When I contacted MasonWorks, Jeff Souza replied immediately -- within the hour -- and got me an estimate the next day, which matched one of the other estimates I got. It seemed fair for the work involved and his Angies' references were great, so we booked him. They did the job within the week. It's a good solid job. My only quibble (and it's just a quibble) is that the bricks are now chalky and streaked with white, not as pretty as the red brick. However, the work was done well, the job site was left clean, and it was worth the money.

This is my second job with Jeff Souza and Bruno Camara of Masonworks, and both have gone very well! His men were punctual, resourceful, careful, clean and attentive to details. They did the entire job - which consisted of ripping up the old driveway, installing the level catch basin, surrounding it with stone, rebuilding the brick edging and concrete, and removing the debris - all within two days. Since then we have had a substantial rain storm, and the new drain worked perfectly. Goodbye flooded basements!

We needed to rebuild a 10-year-old deck as well as fix a leaking bulkhead that seemed to empty right into our basement. Having had a great experience working with Masonworks before, it was a no-brainer to give Jeff a call and have him spec out the job. We discussed a range of ideas and he came back with original plans and drawings. We initially were leaning towards a Trex deck but ultimately went with mahogany and black iron rails. It looks fantastic. The crew arrived and immediately demo’d the deck as well as dismantled the bulkhead. The bulkhead walls were chipped and cracked and water stained. It was clear that it wasn’t just rainwater dripping into the basement, but also underground water that was seeping in through the porous bulkhead walls. Like our previous experience, the Masonworks team is highly efficient, conscientious and hard working. Both projects were finished within six days and the deck looks fantastic. The bulkhead walls recemented and sealed and the crew installed a small sidewalk that slants away from the bulkhead and house, sending rainwater down the driveway. Despite the torrential storms and massive amounts of rain we experienced this spring, our basement has been bone dry and the deck looks spectacular. Another fantastic Masonworks job. We will definitely work with Jeff and the team again and happily refer them to our neighbors and friends.

Jeff came earlier in April and provided a quote for demolishing my (brick) front steps and replacing the steps and walkway. After agreeing to the proposal, a 3 man crew arrived to demolish the steps and walkway, and to remove the rubble. Two of the crew stayed and worked 8-10 hour days for 3 days to pour a new concrete slab for the steps, build brick steps with bluestone treads and landing, and to replace my flagstone walkway with one made of interlocking pavers. Along the way we discovered, as I suspected, that a part of my sill plate had rotted due to water damage, and Bruno had another employee show up and repair it (no leaks since - a definite improvement!). Aside from this unplanned addition, the final cost matched the estimate exactly. After three days I had beautiful new steps, and a week later when the new wrought iron railings were ready, they came back and installed them. The crew was extremely careful not to disturb the rest of my property and cleaned up all the leftover rubble and materials. They had incredible attention to detail and were extremely professional. There were a few communications challenges with the crew, who didn't speak English, but Bruno was always available via phone to help them communicate, and we made do. I am already considering hiring them for my next project.
Description of Work: Masonworks demolished my existing brick steps and flagstone walkway and replaced them with a new set of brick steps with bluestone treads & landing, and wrought iron railings after pouring a concrete slab. My walkway was replaced with a new one built from interlocking pavers. They also repaired a rotted section of my sill plate and properly flashed & sealed the area so I no longer have any water leaks in that area.

The work was fantastic. Masonworks showed up with an 8 man crew and worked tirelessly for a full 10 hour day. They completed the job on time, with fantastic quality and for a great price. At the end of the day they cleaned up completely and left my place in perfect condition. Jeff's insight into the job and his suggestions were also tremendously helpful. I would recommend him to anyone looking for landscaping or masonry work - simply outstanding
Description of Work: Jeff and his crew carried out a number of jobs at my 5 year old house including the following: removing my existing walkway and replacing it with pavers creating a new mulch bed - removing trees in the old location, putting down landscape cloth and leveling + mulching removing my lawn (roto-tilling) weeding, putting down loom and seeding Installing bushes and shrubs

My wife and I needed a quote on a new walkway. Jeff was a pleasure to speak with and he certainly knows his stuff. He came by and took a look at the job. I mentioned pavers as well as blue stone to him based on another house I had seen. I showed him pictures so that made the process a bit simpler. He spoke with me about what had to be done and the options. He took his measurements and said he would email a quote with a drawing. Within a day or two, I received the email with the information. I would have used the service, but the project cost considerably more than we expected and it is not in our budget. Jeff likes to do a complete job. He doesn't like short cuts and I suppose this is the reason for the cost. My wife and I had the opposite feeling because we believe more money should be used on the inside of the home for improvements and less on the outside.
Description of Work: No actual service. Just a quote.

After the first day of work it was found that the flagstone walk was actually placed on top of a concrete sidewalk. This took the amount of work for them to do way up. Not once did they attempt to add a change order to the work; they simply went above and beyond to meet the quote and deliver a wonderful looking walk.
Description of Work: We had them come out to remove an old flagstone walkway and replace it with new Pavers.

We emailed several masons looking for prices on replacing a hundred plus year-old wall of ledge pieces that was crumbling in many places. Jeff Souza responded immediately, set up an appointment to view the job and came punctually. He was very professional and walked the length of the wall. He discussed options with us and incorporated a jog into the wall to accommodate a very old tree next to the existing wall. We were very impressed with his knowledge and professionalism. His quote was detailed and professional in appearance. We chose Mason Works to complete this job because it offered the best price for the most comprehensive job. The job foreman Bruno called to establish the start date. He arrived with his crew at the appointed time and immediately began work on removing the existing wall. He and his men worked tirelessly. Both my wife and I were amazed by the amount of rock that was generated by taking down the wall and excavating for the footing. Over the course of six work days they accomplished a great deal. My wife and I were very pleased by the work ethic of the crew members. They worked from the time they arrived to the time they finished with only a short break for lunch. Bruno was very good at keeping us involved. He checked with us daily to ensure that we were pleased with the progress on the project. I admit to feeling a little anxiety early in the project. When the very large stones started to arrive for the new wall I began to feel better. The workers who set the stones were efficient and professional. The crew members were unfailingly polite and professional. The resulting wall is incredible! It looks wonderful - attractive as well as functional. I think that the masons take a justifiable pride in their workmanship. Many neighbors and passers-by have complimented us on the beautiful wall and we were proud to show off the wall to our family and friends on Easter Sunday. The crew left our property clean and neat. Again, Bruno was very professional in assuring our satisfaction with the project. Jeff also called to follow-up with us. We are very pleased with the entire process and the final product. We would recommend Mason Works to anyone seeking a quality professional experience and outstanding product.

MasonWorks did a fabulous job! The previous contractor who installed our walkway applied cement to the edges to hold the stones in place, which began cracking immediately. For a more permanent and asthetic fix, MasonWorks was called in to provide a solution. They called back within one day and made arrangements to come out the next day. At the site visit, they suggested cobblestone and gave us a price on the spot. This job was for a condo association and it took some time on the associations behalf to iron out trustee issues. Masonworks responded promptly and patiently to all additional questions and provided additional language to the contract in order to honor and accomodate requests made by the trustees. Furthermore, Masonworks provided some additional work - installation of a 2-3 more cobblestones to create a bigger edging when a trustee raised concerns over a particular area of the walkway. This was completed promptly at no additional cost. Masonworks was fantastic and I will call them again!
Description of Work: MAsonWorks installed cobblestone edging to a walkway that was installed by another contractor the previous fall.
