Five of the seventeen slabs in our entrance walkway had developed cracks over the years. I found MasonWorks on Angie's List, with excellent recommendations, and so e-mailed them. Jeff Souza responded promptly and gave us a quote for removing the damaged slabs and replacing them with comparable ones. The price seemed reasonable to us, and since the company came well recommended, we didn't bother to get a comparison bid. There was a minor glitch in scheduling the work, but the miscommunication may well have been my fault. When the crew did come, everything went smoothly.

We appreciate the report. I find no other way of living but been considerate, flexible and professional. This is part of our commitment of service and for as long as i live I will strive to keep this as a reference point on my life and my business. There is enough of problems we need to face in life and when I am invited to give a quote on a job I am expected to resolve an issue with professionalism and I do try to do the best I possibly can in order to easy out my clients life.

We loved working with Jeff and his team! The price was reasonable for the scope of the work and did not change as the project progressed. He uses quality products. The work was done on schedule (and so quickly!). And the people who worked at our home were kind, professional, thoughtful and hard working. Most importantly, the work is absolutely beautiful. Even better than expected. Thank you!

Used these guys last year for snow removal in Cambridge - were pretty much the only company who responded to my inquiry, so I can't comment on their price relative to others. The crew is reliable, showing up at a reasonable time after a snowfall and the owner is responsive to requests/questions. Using them again this year.

Jeff was very kind and responsive upon initial inquiry. Despite of the early morning traffic, he came in on time as promised for an estimate. He also promptly replied my emails whenever I had a question. Bruno called ahead to set up work date. Then he and the crew arrived on time as scheduled and the two crew members worked without additional supervision. I had a chance to observe how the patio foundation was built layer by layer just as Jeff described in the quote. After two days, everything was exactly how I wanted and the work site was tidy and neat at the end. I was very glad that they did such an outstanding job! My neighbors told me over the weekend that they were also impressed by the work!

I obtained 5 estimates for this project. All were "A" rated masons on Angie's List. MasonWorks was in the middle cost-wise but exceeded all the others in terms of quality indicators I was seeking. The photos of their work on Angie's List and their website showed excellent workmanship. The typed estimate was very professional and detailed regarding the work to be done. I worked with Bruno (Jeff's partner). The team of 3 masons who did my project was outstanding. They were highly skilled and also considerate. They worked diligently and stayed late every day to remain on schedule. They were very careful when digging to minimize damage to my front lawn and to avoid hitting any lines, including irrigation system, landscape lighting lines and utilities. They cleaned up afterwards. My new walkway is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, and my paver patio looks like new. They also repaired some loose stones in pre-existing stone walls. I am thrilled with the quality of work done and plan to hire them again in the future. I recommend MasonWorks highly.
Description of Work: Removal of front walkway and installation of new Cambridge paver walkway, 300 sq.ft. It went very well. About 6 weeks before the project began, Jeff came out and we talked through the plan. I told him about the drainage issue so he could factor that into his design. We walked up and down the path and he pointed out an area of the walkway where the water was getting channeled against the house doing damage to the woodwork. I was glad to have his feedback so that we could go ahead and expand the planned project at that time to also take care of damage that was being done to the back of the house. After the walkthough, I followed up with Jeff over email, providing picture samples of the granite steps and pavers we liked. He provided feedback on which samples he felt would work well and which would not be good choices given my particular layout. He left the final decision to me, but I was glad to have his expert feedback on the options. Things then went silent for a few weeks as Jeff's team worked on other projects in their backlog. When it was our turn, I received a call from Bruno who said he would be by the next day to begin work. Bruno was very good about walking me through the plan and making sure that everything I had discussed with Jeff was still what was planned. During the walkthrough, Bruno had the idea of an additional opportunity to provide drainage of water away from the walkway. His contribution to the overall design will hopefully help keep even more water away and avoid it icing over the path when winter comes. The team worked very quickly and was able to get the whole project done in about two weeks. We were happy to provide them with our parking spaces while they worked since there was no other good place for them to keep their equipment around our house, but they went above and beyond to move their equipment out of our spaces for the weekend so that we could use them for the two days they would not be working. Everyone was very nice and focused on their work. The final result looks fantastic. We had several very different proposals provided by several different teams, and this one was a middle-of-the-road approach in terms of cost and scope. We are extremely happy with the choice we made and with the work Jeff, Bruno, and the rest of the MasonWorks team did for us. We would not hesitate to recommend them to others who need work done on their landscapes, especially if their projects are "outside the norm" in some way. More than one landscaper took one look at our yard and drove on by without even bothering to stop, saying the layout was too complicated. MasonWorks not only accepted a challenge some others would not, they did a great job and provided fantastic results.
Description of Work: We have a very tricky yard up on a hill where the concrete path up to the front door was falling apart (and ugly to begin with). On top of that, over the winter, we knew that water tended to follow the path and freeze causing the walk from the street to the house to be pretty hazardous. MasonWorks tore up and removed the existing concrete as well as a couple of crumbling stone walls in the front yard and redid the walls and replaced the old path with granite steps and nice pavers.

It was a very smooth experience. Jeff came initially and we discussed the project. He got back to me in a day with a detailed written estimate. Upon working out more details and choices in pavers and stone, we signed a contract and set a tentative start date. That got pushed back just a week due to weather but when the workers arrived they were fast, effecient, polite, and cleaned up after all was done. I made a few changes during the project and Jeff and co-owner Bruno worked out a change order and accomodated the changes. When installing the driveway Bruno took extra care to make sure the grading was just right and after the first rain it was clear that the driveway is pitched so as not to present any issues. We were very pleased with the results, it looks great and we would use them again.
Description of Work: Excavated old walkway and driveway and put in new paver walkway and new asphalt driveway. Excavated around the whole perimeter of house, edged with cobblestones set in cement about 2-212 feet from structure and filled with stone for better drainage and lower maintainence . Installed a narrow planting bed along side of driveway also edged in cobblestones.

A great final product always starts with great planning. The client planned the job well. She had a landscape designer draw a plan which made our lives much easier. Usually when I look at a job I do draft a sketch of the proposed work. Time saved on this project. The client was a pleasure to work with andthis certainly makes our lives easier. Thanks so much for such considerable review.

It went well overall. The guys worked really hard and got things done in a pretty timely manner. The stone work and masonry was really excellent. The walls, steps, and driveway look really nice. It was pretty clear that the guys had less experience with landscaping and plants. When I contrast them with DoneRightLanscaping, which did our back yard, DoneRight had a much better handle on ideas to get plants that will look good, placement of the plants, etc. These guys were much more just doing what we asked them with no real opinions on what looked good and what didn't. Jeff had some sense for these types of things, but he came to sell us and that was pretty much the end of his involvement unless we specifically asked him something. They clearly run a model where there's a sales guy and execution guys. Sometimes things got lost between the two. Also, the guys who were actually on site didn't speak english, so it was really difficult to give them direction. However, in the end Jeff does really make it a focus of his to make sure you are happy with the work and will do what he can to correct anything you don't like. So my take away is if you need walls, steps, pavers, or anything made of stone, use these guys. If you want landscaping, I think there are probably better options. Ours was a mix, but overall we were happy.
Description of Work: They re-did the driveway ripping out the asphalt and replacing it with pavers. He built walls for flower beds on each side of the driveway. They planted flowers / plants in front of the house including dirt, mulch, etc. They also built a new walkway and steps up to the front door. they opened up our garage so we could turn it into a patio / dining area.

Sometimes it is dificult if not impossible to please the customer. I drafted a plan with the placement of plants and my ideas at what I tought was going to look good but the client's wife had other tastes and changed everything. Once our professional opinion is not taken and ideas not accepted we need to step back and listen to the client. We did all we could in order to make her happy. We all have a method of working and mine is to please the client at any cost. I also am sure that the front looks way much bettter than what was done the year prior by the other contractor they hired to do the back and mentioned on his comments. The quality of our final product is also much better. I am not saying this to brag but I had to repairs things on the back that the other contractor did which was poor quality to the industry standards. I am glad they liked the overall final look and quality of the work.

Jeff came to house to take a look at the project and had an estimate within a day or two. We have a number of renovations going on at the house, including the rebuilding of the porch itself, and had to reschedule the project a few times. They were very understanding and flexible about the project scheduling. The crew arrived right on time and worked diligently for 2 days, finishing the project a day early. They are very talented masons; the steps, platform, and walkway are beautiful and exactly what we wanted.

Fast. Efficient. Polite. Professional. This describes Masonworks on a nutshell. But I better elaborate to clarify what I mean. For my 10th wedding anniversary I decided to install a pool on my new house. The date of the event was drawing near and it was clear to me that the pool contractor would not be able to finish the pool deck on time. I contacted Masonworks and Jeff Souza the owner promptly responded to my call. He showed up, provide me with a written quote and as soon as I agreed with the price he sent me a Proposal for work. We agreed on a commencing date and he ordered the pavers on a rush. They started on time and finished before the agreed upon time which gave me enough time to finish the gazebo and other projects around the pool. My wife was always home while the project was undergoing and she kept me up to date with the progress and how courteous the workers were. They worked hard, arrived early and left late. Both the owner and the workers were very friendly, polite and easy to work with and accommodated our needs and small changes on the design without any hesitation. Our experience with Masonworks was far better than we expected. I highly recommend Masonworks. They are top notch contractors. Awesome finish product. Thank you guys.

Masonworks did a great job with both the stairs and walkway. Jeff was helpful in deciding how to best tackle the projects and offered design suggestions that worked out great. We had a delay due to sidewalk construction being done by the city. Masonworks was very accomodating and stopped work on our walkway and waited until the city was done so that our walkway would tie in properly with the sidewalk. We are very happy with the outcome of both projects and look forward to additional work with Jeff, Bruno and their crew.

On August 8, 2013 the provider and his male assistant arrived at our house without telephoning in advance. As it happened I was in the bathtub, and answered their announcement through the front door that they were here to inspect and make plans for the work with the specific request, "PLEASE WAIT." I finished my bath, dressed, came downstairs and went out the front door to meet the provider; they were nowhere to be seen. I then walked through my house calling out the provider's name and heard him call from the back of the house, in the site of the work area. I entered the basement space and found the provider and his assistant already there, discussing the work. Referring to the fact that I had specifically asked them to wait outside, that I had not been called in advance, and that I was currently at home alone, I told the provider that in future visits I would appreciate a phone call before arrival, to say nothing of not entering the premises against my expressed directions. The provider responded by saying, "Well then we'll settle this. I'm not gonna do your job. I'll send you the contract back," indicating to his assistant to leave. I made clear that I was willing to resolve the situation rather than register a formal complaint; I also noted that it would surely not be in the provider's better interest to leave in this manner, as I would be compelled to report what had happened on Angie's List, where he maintains a very strong rating (indeed, this is why we had elected to go with him as a contractor in the first place.) He ignored me completely, and neither he nor his assistant would even make eye contact as they climbed into their trucks and left. I am not cavalier about putting negative information about service providers online for public consumption--but in this case, I especially felt compelled to do so on behalf of any other women or single individuals who may consider working with this contractor in the future. Beyond disrespected, I felt unsafe following our interaction. Clearly, this is not someone who makes good decisions under pressure.
Description of Work: The service provider's principal inspected and then agreed to remove a concrete side wall from an existing addition structure, so as to stabilize and provide proper footings for the addition. They offered a quote and we entered a contract committing to do the work at some time within a two-month period. We kept in contact through intermittent emails and telephone calls checking to see when the work would be completed, and accepted the provider's assurance that all work would be completed by the end of August, 2013.

When we (me and Bruno my business partner) arrived at the premises there was another gentleman working on the outside which I later found out from the owner that he was a bank appraiser. The door was half opened and I rang the bell. The client answered from the second floor and ask me to wait outside. I closed the door and waited for about 5 minutes and then proceed to the area where the work was to be performed. I greeted the gentleman that was finishing his work and he soon left. 10 minutes or so later I heard the client calling me from the upper porch. We were not in the basement. We were outside in an enclosed area were the owner raises chicken and rabbits (yes they live in the Boston Metropolitan area). The client came down and a never bothered on greeting us. She was extremely impolite and told me that I had chosen the worse time to show up. She asked me if there was anyone on the site when I came which I told her that a gentleman had just left feel minutes after we arrived. She then proceed to tell me that the person there was the bank’s appraiser and I should not have been there at all as the house was under agreement and the bank couldn’t know that I was going to perform any work in the house (I never knew about this and I don’t know why the bank cannot know that a repair is going to be performed in the house). She then told me that she was not comfortable with have two males on her house when she was home alone. From been taken aback by her rude acts I now was in shock. Another male had just left the premises and she was now uncomfortable with me and Bruno? Also why couldn’t the bank know about the work I was going to perform? Honestly I do not need to be in this kind of situation. I felt that her actions was extremely rude, harsh and inappropriate and I sensed a huge red flag. I was there under a signed contract, I never entered into her basement and I was showing Bruno what needed to be done so we could get the work done as they were pressuring me to have it done quickly. If I sense a problem I have the right to walk out. As we were leaving her house (after all I don’t want anyone to be uncomfortable with my presence and with the presence of anyone on my crew for that matter) she started to threaten me and she told me she would destroy my reputation on Angie’s List if I didn’t perform the work. No wonder why we didn’t make eye contact. At this point all I wanted is to get out. Fast. Anyone that will read the reports below will know how polite we are, how much we respect our clients and what kind of effort we put on to get our jobs done perfectly. I respect people and I believe that no one should yell at anyone. What happened at this situation was extremely awkward and I felt that if I pursued this project it would be a situation that I would encounter severe problems. I have the right to steer away from problems. In this case I had to walk away from the job which was the first time ever in my 30+ years career.

From start to finish I was delighted with the professionalism of the company and the work they performed. The owner of the company came out and talked to me about the product they would use as pavers and why they would use them rather than others. He was prompt in sending me a detailed proposal and drawing of the work to be performed. The workers who came out were also very professional. They came early and left late, making sure everything was left neat. The craftsmanship was first class. The retaining wall was not only built well but is very attractive also. I had given them a rough idea of what I wanted the wall, stairs and walkway to look like. Their design and final product was better than I could have imagined. They put rich loam on the area where they had removed the grass and seeded it also. When they left everything was washed down and clean. I couldn't have been happier with their work. I can say that about few contractors.
Description of Work: Removed old concrete walkway (approx. 70') repointed brick front stairs, removed failing stone retaining wall, constructed new retaining wall and paved front walkway.

Working hard is a trend for us. The short summers only gives us so many days to do so much work, so we have to put a lot of effort and get the jobs done quickly but never coming short on the quality of the final product. We will always offer the best product in the market. Quality lasts and we build to last. It is really good to know that our clients see the effort placed into doing such a hard job and that they appreciate it. Thanks so much for allowing us to help you. It was a pleasure for us

The first thing that stood out about Jeff's company is that the estimator showed up EXACTLY on time. And he said, "We value our clients time more than our own, so we're always on time." And they were, every day. They accommodated a change order with minimal added expense, cleaned up the space very well each day and at the end of the job, and were tireless in getting a permit from a very difficult town building department. They did a great job and their work really transformed the look of the back of our house.
Description of Work: Torn out an existing wooden staircase and built a deck and stairs around a new above-ground pool.

My client's time is just as precious as mine and I have to respect it. If we have a meeting scheduled we will show up on that time or before it. Dealing with grumpy inspectors is usual for us. To compensate the clients were a delight to work with. The great pleasure we have is to find out we can meet the expectations of our clients. We work hard for this goal. A happy client is the final goal of a business that wants to stay alive. Thanks for the great review. We enjoyed helping you with this project

Excellent experience. MasonWorks exceeded our vision. They extended our backyard patio, added a stone wall with built in outdoor grill, added a stone wall firepit, and placed cobblestone edging in our front and back yards. Work was top notch. Attitude and experience were top notch. MasonWorks guys were always prompt and worked under harsh weather conditions (which we tried to mitigate as much as possible). Workmanship and final product were even better than we hoped. Slightly pricier than the competition, but well worth it. We are harsh critics and rarely give a glowing review. MasonWorks was excellent all around. Friendly and easy to deal with. Highly recommended.

We also had an excellent experience with the clients. They told me what their vision was when we first met and I drew a sketch of what they told me. I did show them some pictures of other jobs we did and they chose the finish style they liked. I loved the finished product. It was a combination of many factors but having a client that listens and knows how to express their ideas is half of the battle. We did not accomplish anything alone on this project. We just brought to reality the vision the owners had. We enjoyed working there and my hope is that they will enjoy the outdoor space for years to come. Thanks a lot for the kind review.

Jeff came out and described what he would do. He provided great suggestions on what would match the style of the house. The crew started on time and did a great job keeping the mess to a minimum.
Description of Work: MasonWorks Landscapes replaced the front stairs and well as replaced some rotted wood that was discovered during tear out.
