The work was done years ago and we still have nightmares. It cost over twice what was quoted. David charged to repair his own mistakes. We are still correcting a multitude of mistakes. It was not collaborative. If you questioned ANYTHING he would become volitile. He instructed his subs to cut corners. This was communicated to me by one of the many subs that were fired or quit while on the job. At one point, he became so angry that we had to call the police. We fired him and he put a Leon on our home. We had to attain legal counsel. We won, but the trauma our family suffered through our dealing with David lives on. He uses photos of our kitchen to advertise his work, even though it was agreed upon that he would not. Beware, he now works under a new name.

David does meticulous work. Only downside: his thoroughness makes for slow going. Get a quote, not time and materials. He will also take a lot of time talking, but doesn't bill for that time.
Description of Work: Replaced the rotted wooden bases on 20+ 100 year columns supporting our front porch and installed fiber glass pedestals under each column. Time consuming job.

overall it was very contentious - it was obvious that the builder was in money trouble as some of the subs who were contracted did not end up doing the work - the fireplace put in was faulty frm the start - none of the exterior windows were wrapped in a proper and professional way so as we have just spent a fortune to take the entire exterior of the house down to the insulation-no proper fireproofing insulation was installed on the left side of the exterior wall of the fireplace which is a code violation at best - tyvek was put on only in places on the exterior leaving a very wet sheathing underneath the siding and shingles - never replaced proper plywood sheathing on exterior where room was renovated - upon restoration it was discovered that they used silicone to fill holes and spaces -we are still under restoration from poor workmanship - never knew what sub was going to show up as the builder's temper was so bad he would fire them and then not replace them - very bad experience - very costly - it has cost us a huge amount to fix all the mistakes - this company has filed a couple of times - dont ever hire them. their work was fraudulent

He was extremely difficult to work with, finding all sorts of new things to charge us for. He had a very combative personalty, and was constantly changing plans. I had a very bad experience and would not use or recommend his services to anyone.
Description of Work: He was hired to do some renovation to our bedroom, living room, and third floor.

Response from DAVID PALLIAN BUILDER LLC
David Pallian Builder,LLC is a small family owned Carpentry and General Contracting company begun in 1979. From the beginning our concentration has been on residential remodeling, additions and new custom homes. This “review” not withstanding, we have accumulated scores of positive reviews and have been published a number of times in leading trade journals. Virtually all of our work comes to us by word of mouth and references from current or former clients so the relationships that usually develop during the course of a project are very important to us and this client was certainly no exception. We almost always work with our clients in conjunction with their Architect as was the case with this particular client. We have enjoyed a long association of over 25 yrs. with this Architect and this was his neighbor. Overall, the project went exceedingly well and progressed quickly. We had our entire crew on the project daily from beginning to end including myself in my usual capacity as “lead carpenter”. The plans issued by the Architect were very minimal and lacked all but the most basic information. The project therefore required a number of site visits from the Architect as the project developed because there was a great deal of fine tuning of the plans that was required primarily because of the age and the condition of this mid 19th century house and its systems. The Owner makes the claim in his “review” that we were...”constantly changing plans....” This is a false claim on it’s face. We did not make a single change on this project without first consulting both the Owner & the Architect and gaining their approval. There were, as everyone involved expected from the outset, a number of pre-existing conditions that required additional work in order to complete the project. There were also a number of entirely “new” items that the Owners came up with on their own and elected to add to the project. These consisted of some very expensive custom home office desks, shelves and a “gun case” and a very large ( 16 feet long and 12 feet high) custom entertainment center in quarter sawn white oak. Both of the owner’s individually and jointly expressed satisfaction at many intervals during the project with both the progress and quality of our work. There were never any verbal or written complaints made directly to me nor any of my employees or to the architect at any time during the entire course of the project regarding progress, quality or cost. Nor has there ever been any complaint since, outside of this “review” which was submitted to Angie’s list a full eight years after the work was completed. The only problem and, I believe, the source of their “complaint” arose at the very end of the job when my plumber was installing the finish plumbing in the new master bath shower. The Owner’s requested of him that he set the valve of the shower that controls the high end of the hot water to a level higher than that allowed by Massachusetts State Plumbing Code. He very politely informed them that although he would help them if he could, he was prevented from doing so by the code for three reasons. First, Mass Code has determined that a shower mixing or “anti-scald” valve must be installed in all new showers and Mass code stipulates that they cannot be set higher than 112 degrees. Second, he could endanger his Master Plumbers license and thus his livelihood, by not conforming to the code. Finally, plumbing inspectors are required to check the temperature with a thermometer during “Final Inspection” for occupancy. The project would never receive a Final Inspection if the anti-scald valve temperature was not in conformance with Mass Code. Surprisingly, after giving his full & fair explanation, the Owners began to angrily berate him for his explanation of the law. The plumber asked me to intercede at this juncture with the hope that I could explain it in a way that would cool them down a bit. In my meeting with them I went over the identical points he had raised and tried to defuse their irritability to very little effect. From this point on both the Owners were extremely unfriendly to all of us. We did however finish the project shortly thereafter and successfully received all of the final inspections including plumbing. A few weeks later the Owners called me to set up a service call to have the plumber look at the handle on the shower valve which they stated would not stay in a selected position. This was June and as they were leaving for vacation for most of the summer, so they requested a late August appointment which I arranged. When the plumber (the same plumber) returned in August he discovered the problem with the valve handle immediately. A “stop” had been removed by someone, presumably the Owners, since we had last been on site. The “stop” has several functions. One of them is to give the handle adequate tension so that it remains in the position selected. The other function of the “stop” is to regulate the waters “high” temperature to 114 degrees. It is purposely manufactured with these two functions so that it cannot be tampered with. The shower temperature now registered a higher temperature (130 degrees). In order to fix the problem with the handle the plumber needed the stop and asked the Owners if they had removed it or had it removed or in any case knew where it was. The Owners repeatedly claimed to have no knowledge of it’s removal but the plumber knew this was probably not the case. He was patient and repeated his request several times until at last with a high degree of embarrassment, the Owners admitted that they had indeed removed the part and had stored it in the basement. Once the part was in the plumber’s hands, the problem was fixed and he left. The Owner’s then called me as the plumber was leaving and in a fit of uncontrolled rage shouted and screamed at me, using some very rough language concerning the plumber and demanded that he not be sent to their house again. This took place in Sept. 2000. They posted their “review” on Angie’s List in August 2008. I did not know of their “review” for some months. Once I did find out about it I wrote a detailed response and sent it to Angie’s List but they managed to lose it and it never got posted. Given those facts, it’s difficult to reconcile their claim that they publish unbiased reviews. This is a highly biased, untruthful and vengeful review posted out of the Owners continuing sense of embarrassment for having been caught in their own lie. Proof that anyone can say anything on the internet and subvert the truth for their private purposes without being held accountable. Shame on Angie’s list for publishing something without any truth to it and hurting my business and our reputation. Check out our ratings with the Massachusetts Better Business Bureau. We have maintained the highest ratings since becoming members. We would be happy to share with any interested parties some of the many positive endorsements we have garnered over the years.
