Mike and his crew did a great job on the deck. I gave him a call and we discussed the problem for a few minutes. He came over and pulled up some boards to give us a solid estimate. He gave me a verbal estimate over the phone and promised to take care of the job quickly. He spoke to my neighbor separately, so he had to repeat himself a few times, but he always patient, consistent, and thorough. We played a little phone tag trying to schedule the final work (his phone mailbox was full, shifting availability to talk), but it wasn't a big problem. Mike and his crew showed up on time, worked quickly, and the deck looks amazing! During the job, he identified the joist needed support, and braced it without inflating the initial estimate! Finally, he gave an opinion on how much the deck should cost to paint when the carpentry was done. A great experience overall. We would absolutely call him again.
Description of Work: The front porch on our 2 unit condo had some rotted old wood and some sagging. Half the deck needed to be removed and replaced. The joist also needed reinforcing.

After leaving a voice-mail and not hearing back, I called again about 5-7 days later and left another message. After another 3-5 days of not hearing back I called again... still no answer and their voice-mail box was full! Hard to do business with someone you can't even get in touch with.

The job was done from start to finish in about a week. The contractor was at the job site early in the morning and put in a full day with only a short break for lunch. They left the site at the end of the day clean and neat. Any questions I had were responded to immediately. Having work done in your home and having to live in it at the same time can be a very uncomfortable experience. This contractor made the inconvenience minimal.

Mike and his crew have been called in to work on our 1870s house in JP several times over the last couple of years and each time we have been very, very pleased with the work. They've done it all, small and large, carpentry, built-ins, plaster, painting, etc., etc. Mike designed and built a great library for us with amazing built-in shelves that look like they came with the house (everyone says so). The highest quality carpentry, great design eye, really good customer service and follow-through, straight-forward dealing with any problems that arise, fair prices, scrupulously honest, and generally just the nicest guys you'd want to deal with. When we had an emergency this summer and really needed help, Mike inconvenienced himself (a lot) and dropped everything to come to our house to help us. Just because we really needed the help. Does this even happen in the world anymore? We are completely ruined for any other carpenter and crew and just wouldn't work with anyone else. We just cannot recommend Mike highly enough.

The window was done well and the door frame was good. The only thing was the the job was not completed. They did not show up the day they were supposed to. They came in the following day and it took them a couple of hours to do most of the work. Mike did not do the work himself, he sent to workers to do the job. He just came in to verify the work and then left. The did not finish putting up pieces of wood on the kitchen ceiling like we had agreed and he still wanted us to pay him the total amount of the work.

Mike runs a very professional business. He communicates with the customer well and there is not that problem of never hearing from the contractor once they give you an estimate. He sent Eddie and his crew to assess the work and then they returned as promised to complete the job. I had ice damming and my kitchen roof need re-plastering and painting. I also contracted to have work done in the bathroom (plastering and painting) and the back deck (repaint stairs and door). It all looks great and I am very happy.

We called Mr. Bauman several times and also sent two Emails. He never followed up and was unable to set up an appointment with us. In one of the phone calls, we had to stop the conversation because he was with his children and it was impossible to hear anything or to talk. We have been waiting for him to contact us for the last two weeks without any luck. Very unprofessional. My question to Angie's List is: If Mr. Bauman behaves like this, with all his "gold" service medals, how are the guys without any "gold" medals?

I can't say enough good things about Mike Bauman. I hired him, after getting a number of quotes from other people, to replace the rails and decking on my 3-family house. The rails, which were originally built in 1927, did not come up to height code, and the decking on the porches also needed to be replaced. He also secured the woodwork underlaying the porches so that the entire porch structure would be solid and watertight. Mike gave me a quote that was reasonably priced, and more importantly showed the careful attention to detail that I needed. Looking up and down the streets in my neighborhood in Dorchester, you can see a lot of carpentry work gone bad, like rails the wrong size, lintel posts and rails not matching, rails mismatched to the rest of the architecture of the house, and porches detaching from the house. Mike is patient, and he is conscientious, and these qualities allowed us to figure out a way to reconstruct the porches so as to conform to building code yet also respect the original architecture of the house. I've attached 2 photos, so you can see for yourself. Mike came out in May to start the work, and it was finished by July. This is because I also had the windows replaced, insulation pumped in, the garage roof replaced, and other work done as well. In all cases Mike was careful and thorough, which are qualities you want in a contractor when you are going to work all day and leaving them behind to work on your property. By the end of the process, I had a superb-looking and solidly built set of 3 porches, and was very happy. Thank you, Mike!

There was some initial mix-up with scheduling, but Mike made it to our place at the scheduled time. He and a partner took a look at our stairs and came up with some good suggestions for how to go about re-doing them with hardwood, adding skirtboards, and adding a new banister. The quote was higher than a few others we received, so we didn't go with him in the end. He seemed very responsive and knowledgeable.

Mike came out promptly to provide an estimate and identied additional problem areas (wood rots) that I had missed. Initially, Mike recommended repainting all exterior trims on the house. While this is a good recommendation, I wanted to limit the scope of work to the more urgent wood rot repair as we were in a string of wet days and one of the frames was badly exposed. Mike was flexible and agreed to prime and paint just the replaced trims (I supplied the paint). Chris and another crew member came out the following day and got started on the job, later joined by Mike. Their effort to get the job done right was evident. Mike and I had initially discussed covering up a drilled hole (~ 2") on a cedar siding with a small slab of wood. However, Chris and Mike improvised on the site by replacing a short slab of the cedar siding - clearly a better long term solution. As work progressed, Mike noticed a couple of additional minor wood rots at the base of the garage door trim and took care of them on the same day for a very reasonable additional $90. Mike and crew were professional, courteous and friendly. Their craftmanship is evident. They did first rate job with each repair. They worked on 5 different exterior spots of the house and cleaned up everything neatly.
Description of Work: Repair wood rot on 3 exterior window frames, one on 2nd floor. Repair a drilled hole on cedar siding by replacing ~3 ft of the siding Fill in a repaint woodpecker damage on exterior trim (~25 ft above ground) Miscellaneous minor woot rot repairs on exterior trims

We were pleased with the work done and the quick response. The situation escalated rapidly and we needed someone in right away to "stop the bleeding". We went back and forth a bit via email before hooking up, but we called during a heavy rain fall on a Tuesday night and they came out on Friday and got the job done. The works seems to have taken care of the problem and Mike asked us to contact him if we found further leaks or problems which we haven't thus far.
Description of Work: We had water leakage above, below and through second and third floor windows on the north facing wall of the house. Mike and his crew came and assessed the situation. They took down and cleaned the existing gutter. Re-flashed one end of the gutter that was against the house and was not originally done correctly. They re-angled the gutter towards the back of the house and added another downspout at the rear of the house.

He was great. We haven’t yet had a really heavy rain and so we are not sure whether the problem is completely fixed or not. He was very easy to deal with. He was very straight forward about the possibility of there being more to the job. He did everything really quickly. He was honest and upfront. I would use his services again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Bauman Remodeling. I last used their services this past week. They did all they needed to do and they might come back again. He did some repair on the siding and he reset a gutter. He also added the downspout and added some splash block because basically the stopper leaked.

Mike Bauman showed up promptly for the estimate, obtained the permits and started the work. Mike is a meticulous crafstman who cares deeply about the quality of his work and the satisfaction of his customers. We encountered some significant structural issues which Mike handled thoughtfully and successfully. He not only supervises his workers and subs, he is often there to work with them. If we had questions Mike was always available. He is both flexible and creative. Further, I can't say enough about his plumber Rick who was also extraordinarily careful and competent. The only complaint we had was that there was some carelessness regarding protection of the floor and spattering of plaster. This needed extra cleanup which was performed and were relatively minor given the overall succes of the job. My wife and I love our new home - our thanks to Mike!

My experience with Mike was very much a positive one. Mike came over after work one night (to accommodate my schedule) to take a look at the job and to provide me with an estimate. We discussed the project in detail and by the time Mike left I had all the measurements, specs and details I needed to place an order for the entry door. When I finally did decide on where to purchase the door Mike offered to meet me there to place the order with me in case there were questions or issues I needed help with. When the door came in the company I ordered it from said they would only provide “curbside” delivery and would not help me in the house with it. Mike was good enough to send over one of his guys, not only to help me get it in the house, but also to disassemble the door from the jamb and assist me in getting it onto saw horses for finishing. This was a HUGE help for me. Mike had originally quoted about 2 weeks from the time I got the door finished to the time he would be able to perform the installation but it ended up being closer to 3 weeks because Mike was on another job at the time. I was impressed with the attention to detail that Mike and his guys (Chris and Juan) showed. They worked hard and really never took breaks. The door was shimmed and leveled, caulked and insulated. Mike installed lead under the threshold to help with water management. The trim in the house is 100 years old and Mike was sure to get as close to the original trim design and detail as he could. The door came without a hole for the deadbolt drilled at the factory so Mike drilled it out himself and reinstalled our existing lock hardware. Chris even offered to reinstall our wireless alarm hardware but the difference in doors did not allow us to reuse it. They also installed the new storm door as well. It took 2 days to complete which was precisely what Mike said it would take. Mike’s final bill was almost exactly what he originally quoted me when we first met. The only additional charge was for the purchase of the items he needed to drill the hole for the deadbolt and the additional labor. There were no additional or surprise up-charges. Mike was VERY fair! I would definitely use him again for any future projects.

We have a very old home (1875). The stair case is the original one and is not the standard one as it slightly spirals at the top. Some of the stair treads were irregular in shape. I had many contractors look at the job and Mike was the last. They were very busy but Mike made the time to come out and take a look at the job. Mike and Chris explained in detail about the need for shoring up and supporting the treads underneath as the design of the older stairs needed it to support the weight. His quote was right in the ball park of the other quotes I had received but I felt comfortable with Mike. We decided to go with them and even though they were in the middle of a very big job, they came on Friday (2 days after accepting the quote) and completed the job in 1 day! On the day of the job, I met Juan who worked alongside the other guys and did a fabulous job. The cut of the irregular stair treads look great and the framework is sturdy when you step on the stair tread. I had to leave to go pick up my kids from school and asked if I could leave them? They were fine with it. By the time I came back (around 4:30pm), they were gone, the place was cleaned up and the job was done. I would without a doubt HIGHLY recommend Mike, Chris and Juan to anyone looking for great contractors/carpenters. In fact, I will definitely use them in the coming months on other jobs in my home. It is difficult to find someone these days that you can trust to have the same vision that respect for your home that you do and MIke and the gang fits that bill.
Description of Work: Five of our stair treads needed to be replaced. One in particular was completely split. 1. Remove balusters 2. Remove 5 stair treads 3. Add framing to reinforce treads 4. Install 5 new stair treads and re-install balusters. Two of the treads will have to be modified by adding an extension piece as they are irregular in shape.
From the time we met Mike for the quote, we could tell we felt very comfortable with him working on our project. He was very courteous and thorough in trying to understand what we wanted, and what needed to be done. He actually did the measurements and described the materials he planned on using, and said he would get back to me with a quote within a day. (Totally different than another guy who came in for a quote and didn't even bother to measure anything or think about what I really wanted). Mike got back to us within the time he said, and was very accessible on the phone when I wanted to ask about different options, such as adding lighting or changing the materials. He even put us together with a great electrician that he works with (DPH Electric - also on Angie's list), and they coordinated to set up the wiring before the major carpentry work happened, and finish up after the painting/etc was done. In the end, after they finished the demo and opened up the closet cavity, there was more work than expected because the wall inside the closet needed re-plastering for various reasons, and took his guys longer to get done, but Mike stuck by his original quote and didn't increase our costs. Instead they did a thorough job, putting up new blue-board and re-plastering the inside and painting the whole wall (we provided the paint) so that it seamlessly blended into our wall. The result is awesome. I have before, during, and after pics of the bookshelf. We've gotten TONS of complements - and it totally opens up the whole room. definitely worth it. They also were able to do the door just the way I had imagined. Mike was very open in listening to what I wanted, and thinking about all the solutions we could come up with. We were able to reuse the old beautiful doors, and rearrange them so they now open like a folding door, but when shut, most people wouldn't know the difference. I would highly recommend Mike and his team for any carpentry/remodelling work, and will definitely talk to him when we have other projects. Not only are the outcomes great, we also really enjoyed working with him and felt comfortable having him and his team working in our home.
Description of Work: We wanted to convert and open up a shallow, basically unusable, closet in our 1900s condo into a modern built-in open bookcase. We also wanted to re-work a set of french doors that were unable to open properly because of poor placement near a radiator. Mike Bauman and his team were able to do exactly what we wanted, and did so in a very professional way that met and exceeded our expectations.

The previous responder sounds as though he was dealing with a different person. Mike is extremely careful and almost overly concerned with detail and getting things right. He is prompt and communicates regularly. We got the building permit (Cambridge - which can be as tough as Boston) in three days. He and his carpenters are friendly, eager to please and super competent. This is a very complex project due to the cathedral ceiling and required consulting a structural engineer which was accomplished speedily and at a very reasonable cost. Since we currently live on Cape Cod and can only be on site occasionally, having the job in such capable hands is crucially important. We couldn't be more pleased and can recommend Mr. Baumann without reservation!

Michael and his cousin came over and spent over an hour examining an describing the best solution. They raised the beam and joined the floor joists to the side of it instead of on top of it, giving us over 12 inches of head room AND because they jacked up structural beam level, they resolved the large bow in our second floor that JJ Gauvain had introduced. They added supports in basement making sure it was safe. They were polite, quick, cleaned up at end of the day and did EXACTLY what they said they would and more. After dealing with two sleazy contractors before them, it was a joy to work with professionals who had integrity and pride in their work. They completed the job in 3 days and gave us multiple followup calls making sure we are happy with the work. We spend a hundred or two more for these guys, but if we had hired them at the start it would have saved us thousands in repairs needed to fix the damage the other contractors had done. I will recommend these guys to all my friends and family (and already have).
Description of Work: Great experience! We had a load bearing wall running through half of 1st floor replaced by a structural beam to make open floor plan. We hired one contractor who ran off after his guys put it in crooked and unsupported - failing inspection and making 2nd floor bow. Hired second guy who fixed enough to pass inspection but it was still an eyesore. Hired Michael from BAUMAN REMODELING to resolve issue of beam hanging 20+ inches into middle of room.

The job went well. Mike was always available when I was worried about anything. I knew he would do whatever it took to finish the job to my satisfaction. He is always calm and polite. Nothing rattles him - a good quality for a contractor. When his painter began work on the exterior of my vestibule, he discovered substantial rot. Mike and his crew spent considerable time figuring out how to repair the problem and, most importantly, how to eliminate the cause of the leaking. The entire group was invested in solving this problem and solving it most efficiently. I imagine that it is usual for the unseen to cause changes to the progress and scope of a job (Murphy's Law). How that is dealt with by a contractor is important. (I did not know all this when I began!) Mike gave me the best possible price when these unanticipated additions to the job occurred. And, when a task proved easier than he had expected, he reduced the price accordingly. At the end of the project, he was just as attentive to the details as he was at the beginning. I never felt he was rushing to get to the next job. He and his crew did excellent tile work, custom cabinetry, electrical work, plumbing and painting. I am sure he could do anything one would ever need to build or remodel. Too, he is an honest man - no hype, no ego. He and his men were easy to have around. They were always professional and polite. In fact, I miss them! Not that I would have my work go on forever, but I genuinely liked them all. Mike and his crew are a trustworthy group - I have nothing but superlatives for them all.
Description of Work: I hired Mike and his crew to remodel a bathroom which involved: a new tile floor, removing wallpaper and painting, installing overhead lighting, plumbing, new vanity, new sink and toilet. They also painted a bathroom and repaired tile, did miscellaneous inside painting, small jobs, such as closing a foundation hole in my cellar. They partially rebuilt and painted my vestibule and did other exterior painting.

I needed 2 storm doors installed. He talked to me for a long time about all of it, that it was harder than it seemed, that often there were unforseen problems with older houses. One of the doors needed to be cut.He said he was going to Home Depot that day, he would look at the door that I bought and then get back to me for a time to come and look and give me an estimate. We were on the phone for a long time. He never came and he never called back. I had already told him of other contractors doing this to me. My 1920 bungelow house substained an electrical fire as a result of a frayed lamp cord, I needed a good contractor who was honest and not take advantage of a guilable women. I was watching HGTV and saw Angies List advertize I visited their website and saw that Bauman Remodeling was very highly rated with a goldstar. Well, I definitely see why members rate this contractor and crew so highy because they do such good work, in a timely professional manner with close attention to detail and at a reasonable cost I couldn't as for a better contractor who actually did more than I expected with even a few free extras thrown in.The talented Chris and Wyane completely rebuilt my gutted bedroom They installed new hardwood floor in my bedroom and closet, and also enlarged the opening in my closet and put in shelves and clothing rod. They also put in new formadyhe free insulation in my attic and insulated my bedroom. They fixed two broken joyst in the attic which was very unsafe condition, Extensive Electric work was done by Dave including rewiring two bedrooms, installing several light fixtures and ceiling fans, removal old unsafe knob and tubing wiring, replacing several electrical outllets and switches, and bathroom vent Painting and plastering by Ed and crew included repainting entire interior blueboarding, drywalling and plastering, and painting exterior porchfloor, porch ceiling, front stairs, front door and trimwork. Everything went great. Mike pays a lot of attention to detail and checks in with the owner every step of the way to make sure it is done the way you want it as opposed to the way he wants it done. He provided details of his costs, was reasonable with his prices, and has excellent people he works with including Juan and Chris. The second floor deck was made with construction wood and the railings and spindles were rotting. He found a place to mill the word for the railings and spindles and replaced the floor with fir. He used tongue and groove so it would not show any nails as we requested. The milling was reasonable and the painter was great. He and his crew also repaired and replaced some rotted soffits and installed new gutters. Everything came out great. He most recently also installed a copper roof for us on a small balcony, which came out beautiful. I'm going to use him again for more projects
Description of Work: Replaced entire second floor deck including painting and milling of wood, replaced wooden gutters with aluminum, replaced side porch with milled wood and painted, replaced all rotted wood around house, including soffits to get it ready to be painted, recommended excellent painter, installed copper roof, installed storm windows.

Mike was outstanding to work with from the beginning. I was very nervous as this was the first time I hired contractors for any kind of work on our home - Mike was thorough and thoughtful in all our interactions and made it clear that he would do his very best for us. He committed to sticking to his estimate no matter what and despite some tough spots here and there he was a man of his word. We had an issue with some dust making it?s way down to the 2nd floor where we were living while the work was being done and Mike was very responsive and fixed the situation and offered us various solutions for clean-up. Mike paid excellent attention to details that I might not even have noticed. The moulding was tricky in some spots and he had some creative solutions that look great! We were originally going to replace one window sill but when work started Mike realized that 2 should really be replaced - he did so at no additional charge! There was some original plaster work in one of the rooms that was pretty banged up but they did a BEAUTIFUL job of fixing it up and making it look like the rest of the trim. I can?t say enough about how great Mike was at paying attention to detail and making sure we were informed and satisfied every step of the way. And he really is just a very likable person and a pleasure to work with. We?re hiring him again to replace a window and probably to do some closet work too! Definitely recommend working with Mike - you won?t regret it!
Description of Work: We hired Mike to put up new walls and trim on our third floor. The house was built in 1870 and the 3rd floor is a large attic type space consisting of 3 bedrooms and a hallway. Mike put up all new blue board, plastered, and replaced all trim on windows, doors, and a skylight. He also wound up having to do some work in our stairwell to make it work with the other renovations.
