I got the chairs back in the time specified- like a week. The cloth seats looked refreshed, the one arm repaired, one leg leveled out and in general they felt solid and safe to sit on again. I was happy with the work. We used a Square+cellphone swipe of a credit card and that worked fine too.
Description of Work: One dining room chair with arms and two side chairs repaired from my mother's set. They were taken apart and put back together. They offered to re-finish the chairs but it was more than I wanted to pay without doing the whole set together. I had a Groupon coupon for $200 of work for $100 and there was no problem with that

They have a very professional organization. They do beautiful work. They let me come into the showroom and see the other projects that they are working on. They treated my modest little piece of furniture with the utmost respect.

I needed to have four, 17th and 18th century frames repaired and touched up. I got a coupon from Angie's List and decided to try Restorers Without Borders in Brookline. That turned out to be a excellent idea. It's not easy to find people truly qualified to work on French and Italian antiques and they did a really nice job. Everything was done to my satisfaction, on time, actually a little early, and I would recommend them to anyone in the area that needs high quality restoration work. No problems with these guys!

I contacted Jeff from Restorer's without Boarders after purchasing an Angie's List coupon. He and his coworker, Alfonso were great from start to finish. They came to give an estimate, were very accommodating to my schedule and finished the work according to the schedule they provided. The work they did was beyond our expectations - their work is meticulous and the bureau came out absolutely gorgeous. It is a financial investment to have this type of work done, but we feel like it was worth every penny and will have them restore other family pieces in the future.
Description of Work: We had a bureau refinished that belonged to my husband's grandparents.

I signed up with Restorers Without Boarders for a discount on furniture repair and restoration, offered as one of Angie's List's "Big Deals". And I am so glad I did! I signed up for the offer because their reviews were very positive and described work that seemed to fit what I was looking to have done. They were very responsive. When I called the contact number and left a voice message, Jeff Diamond got back to me me very quickly. We arranged a time for them to come and look at the table I wanted restored. Three gentlemen showed up right on time. Alfonso Mageski described what they would have to do to repair the damage. I knew it would not be an easy or straight forward job, from previous efforts to find someone to do the repair; and that to do it right would be labor intensive and require real skill and knowledge. They gave me an estimated price and time to complete, and took the table away with them. The result exceeded all my expectations. They brought the table back to me ahead of the estimated time and for the agreed upon price - even though it took them more hours than they had originally thought. It was not inexpensive, but it was worth every penny and I would spend it again for this level of quality craftmanship. The table is beautiful again and its injury completely healed. The new finish is exquisite, the color matches exactly, and the gold inlay is perfect. It is obvious the care they took and the skill that went into the work. It was also obvious from the looks on their faces and the tones of their voices, when they brought the table into my living room and described what they done to bring it back to life, that they took great pride in this work that they had done with their own hands. That is so rare these days and was a joy to see. I would recommend them highly to anyone, and would call them again myself without hesitiation.
Description of Work: Restorers Without Borders repaired and refinished the top of a drop leaf table that had been damaged by acid from a leaking battery. It had left a 4 inch diameter area where the veneer had been eaten down through to the underlying wood. It was not possible to repair only that area without leaving a very visible patch. The veneer on the entire top and the 2 drop leafs had to be removed, new veneer applied, and then everything stained and finished to match the table base and legs. An inlaid line of gold trim also had to be applied around the edge of the top and leafs to match the original.

The work done on the chair is excellent. There were some structural work done but mostly refinishing. It looks amazing. I used to do this work when I was younger and this would have taken me one week or 2-3 weekends to finish and it would not have looked 1/10th as good.
Description of Work: I brought rocking chair in to have them give me an appraisal to refinish it. I called first to make an appointment to drop it off. Any time I had to leave message, it was returned that same day. Within a day of dropping off the chair, I got a call with a detailed estimate - $450 in total and I had a Angies List coupon deal that was going to expire while the work was being done and before I could get back there to get the chair and pay for the work. "No problem all coupons will be honored."

Refinished and restored an old coffee table that I had bought at a yard sale. Jeff was professional and precise with his estimate and recommendation. I also found the people that worked in the shop extremely friendy, and accomodating. After I picked up my "perfectly" finished coffee table, and put it in the back of my SUV face down on the carpet, when driving home unbeenknown to me, it was rubbing against the plastic seat belt holder as I took turns and curves. When I got home, I was heartbroken to see that the beautiful finish that Restorers without Borders had applied to my "like new" coffee table was scratched on one end due to the rubbing against the seat belt holder. I called Jeff and he told me to drop it back off and they fixed it free of charge! It looks beautiful, and I would recommend their service to anyone that wants a top quality job, and understands the hours of work that goes into their rates.

Restorers without Borders did a great job restoring my wooden kitchen table. They picked it up and delivered it. Everything was quoted prior to the work being done, and there were no surprises. I had to have the work done by a certain date to have the table back in time for a party, and they delivered it before the quoted date. The table looks better than ever. They tightened up all the hardware. Overall, a pleasure to work with. A bit pricey, but worth it. I was not disappointed!

I used a coupon offered through Angie's List. When the crew came out to my house, they gave me an estimate of what the work would cost. The estimate was more than I had planned to spend, and I almost decided not to have some of the work done?but I am VERY glad that I had the furniture restored. Restorers Without Borders worked on my furniture in their studio for a couple months. The results are gorgeous, and the crew was extremely professional. Afonso Mageski did an outstanding job with the refinishing, and in constructing a new leaf for my dining room table?a tricky and difficult job because of the way the table is constructed. The people at Restorers Without Borders obviously take great pride in their work. If I have other furniture to be repaired and restored, I will definitely use this company.
Description of Work: Restorers Without Borders did the following: (1) refinished the tops of two cherry tables, one a gate-leg and the other a drop-leaf, (2) added a new leaf to the gate-leg table to make it longer, (2) glued four kitchen chairs and refinished one of them to match the others.

These guys are very professional and want to do a great job. Clearly these guys LOVE furniture restoration and approach it as an art. They are expensive, but it is true that you get what you pay. They made sure they explained their process AND the fact that the Angie's Deal would probably make a minor dent in the overall price (unless it was a minor project). The will travel to you to provide estimates (there is a fee but if you chose to go ahead with the work, it applies toward the job) and will transport large pieces to and from (again for a reasonable fee). Once we save up again, we will continue down our list ;-D *Note: date is not of house since work was not done on our home but the estimated date of the piece of furniture. This review does not very accurately accommodate this type of work.*
Description of Work: We had a large, 3 drawer dresser refinished. It was in very poor shape. The entire top needed to be replaced due to water damage, there were several chips (2X2, 2X1) that needed to be filled in as well as a missing hardware that needed to be matched and replaced. It was a well used and before we can=me into possession, well abused piece but it had fabulous design and layout. We could not have purchased as high a quality one for what we paid to have it refinished. They just do not make them like that anymore.

This is not the first time I reviewed Restorers Without Borders for Angie's List. This service has been a gift to us. The whole team, led by Jeff Diamond, seems to work in concert to provide the highest quality service possible. Every team member is a highly-skilled professional. In addition, each of them is so pleasant to work with that the entire experience is a delight. Service is prompt and this time, faster than expected. We have had quite a few pieces of furniture given a makeover by Restorers Without Borders and I will call them first the next time.
Description of Work: We have used Restorers Without Borders to do furniture refinishing, restoring and repairing. They did a lot. They last refinished a mahogany armoire that we bought in Ireland. It was pristine when we bought it in 1987 but it was used every day since we bought it and wear and tear was noticeable. Thanks to central heating, some of the glue had dried and carving had come off. Restorers Without Borders has an amazing team of craftspeople who carved replacement trim that had been lost; replaced and repaired veneer, stabilized the structure, and generally returned it to the condition in which we had found it in Ireland.

It did take awhile to set up an initial appt, although since this was part of an Angie's List Big Deal, I expected nothing different. However, through it all, they were responsiveness and once the appointment was set, were punctual. I don't know if I am just not aware of the cost of restoring furntiure, (probably so) but the price for two chairs seemed quite high.... However, they did a great job, and I would recommend them highly.

Description of Work: These guys are true artisans. I had an old 1930s/40s dresser which had veneerial disease and these guys completely refinished and retored it. Probably. Ever looked that good originally. They even polished all the brass. They're very proud of their work and it shows. I highly recommend them. You won't be disappointed!

We used this beautiful, inlaid linen cupboard to house a large, heavy (pre-flatscreen) TV. The heat of the electronics lifted much of the inlay out of place and pieces of it were lost. The weight caused the legs to give way and splay. As we could not lift the TV, we just stuck books underneath as a temporary fix.We had a candle tip over during a very fun party which left a horrible burn: second and third degree, about 8 inch diameter. We were generally abusive.Restorers Without Borders came to give an estimate and take it away for rehabilitation. They were complete professionals and non-judgmental.A few weeks later, they returned it in pristine condition - it looks unbelievable. Now we are using it for a light-weight TV. It seems to be doing fine.Afonso did the extremely skilled repair of the inlays: looks miraculous. No way to tell where the repairs are.

First - they were really friendly and very accommodating on the phone. They came to my house and when I wasn't there they were really nice about waiting around for 15 minutes while I made it home (I completely forgot about the appointment). They fixed my wobbly table there on the spot, were very profession, and again - super nice. I would definitely recommend them!

From beginning to end I felt like I was dealing with true professionals. They were courteous, punctual, knowledgeable, and friendly. They removed the settee with the utmost of care and returned it with the same level of care. I was impressed that they removed their shoes upon entering the house, which told me a lot about their attention to detail and respect for my home. They explained in detail what they proposed to do and answered all my questions patiently and knowledgeably. The settee is a family heirloom and I had no doubts that it would be safe and in good hands while it was in their shop being repaired. They did beautiful work and you would never know it had been broken so badly. They even added reinforcements (not visible) to the structure to improve its sturdiness and durability (it is a delicate piece of furniture). I feel this company is very trustworthy and competent, offering their clients a high level of quality and professionalism. I would not hesitate to use them again--which I plan to do.
Description of Work: They repaired an antique settee which had broken at the juncture of the seat bottom, front leg, and armrest. The upholstery had ripped away from the frame which they also repaired and restored. They also reinforced the structure of the piece.

prompt reply to my inquiry. Immeadiatly asked if I was using a coupon. Drop off was easy. Quote before coupon was $375, I felt that was high but he stressed with the coupon it was only $175 ( in actuality with what I paid for the coupon it was $264, which I felt was fair because I realize things always cost more than you expect.). Pleasant & informative at pick up. I always feel a little suspicious when people want to know about a coupon before giving an estimate. But overall a good experience.

Response from Restorers Without Borders
Distrust of honest intentions is obviously at issue in this client's misinterpretation of why she was asked if she was an Angie's List member. Since the day Restorers Without Borders opened its doors for business, it has been a standard practice to request the referral source of all clients (this practice was in effect long before Restorers Without Borders was a member of Angie's List). The purpose of the question is simply to be aware of where our referral sources are coming from. This practice will be continued.

This is an absolutely phenomenal, wonderful business. Would that all people enjoyed their work as much and were as honest and fair and communicative accommodating as Jeff and Alphonso and their colleagues are. They did the work for us faster than they predicted they could, and Jeff kept us informed about the progress on the pieces throughout the process. All of the work was done to perfection: the furniture looked brand-new -- better than brand-new, even -- and the upholstery was stunning and masterfully done. We actually had a couple of problems with the cushion-guts on both pieces; Jeff responded INSTANTLY to our concerns, even though he was out of the country at the time we called him. The problems were fixed lightning-fast, and it was clear to us that if we still had concerns Jeff would be happy to address them. He is determined to please his customers and to get things better than exactly right. We cannot recommend this company highly enough. We've been using Angie's List for many years and have often been very happy with the service we've received from the companies we engaged. However, we've never been moved to write a review like this. If you need work on your furniture, you'd be crazy to go to any company other than Restorers Without Borders.

It took me a while to finish it and they had it for about a month and a half. The quality was excellent and they were very pleasant to work with. You just have to call to make sure they are there to drop it off. They could come to your home for $90 to work on the project or you can take the piece to them at no extra charge.

We dropped off the bureau on a Saturday afternoon and they helped us take it out of the car and put it in the shop. They said the appraiser would call us in a day or two and give us an estimate. We received the estimate on Monday andthey told us it would take approximately 6-8 weeks to complete. The piece was in rough shape and I was actually thinking we should throw it away but my mother-in-law wanted it because it had belonged to her mother. Our expectations were that maybe they could do something with it and it would look a little better. Approximately 6 weeks later (as expected) we received a call from Jeff and he said it was complete. We came in on a Saturday to pick it up and we were amazed at how nice it looked! They showed it to us and asked if that was our piece and my first thought was to say no because it was so much nicer than when we left it. But as we looked at it again we realized that it was in fact ours. The drawers which had been hard to open now slide out nice and easily. The two drawer handles which had been broken were replaced by hand carved pulls which were exact matches to the previously existing pulls. And the wood color was beautiful and deep. And that was while maintaining all of the original wood. We were so pleased with their work that we brought in another table that needs to have its leg replaced and possibly have some refinishing. Based on their work on the bureau we know that they are perfectionists so we expect that it will be done with great care and will look better than we would have expected when complete.
Description of Work: We brought in an old cedar bureau that belonged to my wife's grandmother and had been sitting in the basement for many years. We asked them to refinish it and to recreate the handles on the top drawer that had been broken.
