Bruin was not the first window company that we called. We met with a couple of the brand name window companies and had the typical experience ? owners need to be home; meeting took a couple of hours and there was a hard sell. I learned that the brand name companies sub-contracted their window installations and I feared that even if I went with the brand name company, if I ever needed the windows serviced, I would get lost in a big company bureaucracy. I found Bruin in our local phone book and really wanted to give a local business a try. I was thrilled when I met the Bruin rep, Bob (also the owner!) He told me that all their installations are performed by their own employees and that they would be around to service the windows if I ever needed it. I really liked that. Since Bruin doesn?t work with just one window manufacturer, we had access to all the big name windows through Bruin and could have Bruin install them. I went to their showroom and could see for myself the different types of windows, side by side, to figure out what was right for our home. Bruin was able to really listen to what we wanted to do and because they were not trying just to sell us a specific brand of window, they were able to work within our budget and provide us with the right window for our home. All of the windows on our second floor have been replaced by Bruin. We continue to work with Bruin on replacing the rest of the windows that need to be replaced.
Description of Work: Replaced all windows on second floor of the house with new construction type vinyl windows. We 're still working on replacing more of the windows in the house.

When I got home the first day they were on the job, I could not see much of what work was completed but I could see where they had been in my home from the trail of insulation that they left. They said they didn't know where the 2nd attic entry was but I knew they had been in my bedroom closet (where the entry is) because of the trail of insulation. The second day they were there, two employees entered my home at 8:30am. One started to work and they other had to leave and go back to the office to get things he had forgotten. A couple hours later they said they couldn't finish the job because they didn't have a truck for insulation. When I expressed concerns that this was the 2nd day on the job and not much had been completed they came back and said they had a truck. When I reviewed their work that day, they had left a bedroom window open with insulation all over the floor. They came back a third day but left without finalizing the job. They were suppose to come back and caulk around a door that they had place insulating material around. They never came back to finish nor were we ever contacted. Overall, they are very creepy and their work ethic is very unprofessional.
Description of Work: Per a national energy audit contract, full insulation, venting and duct work was to be completed.

Just a note to say how great Bruin is. I have a screen door from them, installed a few years ago. I came home recently and the top of the door was jammed; I couldn't open it; no idea how it happened. In desperation, I called and left a message to see if someone could look at it. An employee came by the next day and fixed it while I was at work, telling my condo facilities manager he could fix it without a problem. No charges at all. The fact that they took time out of their day to simply stop by and fix things truly went above and beyond customer service. This is an excellent company, I highly recommend them.

Consultation went well but no one came to measure the existing window. When I called to ask about this, I was told that it wouldn't be necessary since they had the dimensions from working on other units in the complex. Installation day arrived and the door went in perfectly. Thank goodness, the installer took the precaution of measuring the existing window before taking it out since the replacement turned out to be the wrong size. (Apparently some units in the complex were known to have this variation, which is why he checked the dimensions before proceeding.) The window had to be reordered, starting the clock over, but once again, it came in right on time and the installation went beautifully. My experience with Bruin was first-rate except for the measurement snafu. This project was completed nearly two years ago. There have been zero problems and I am very happy with the new door and window.

The installation went well after a difficult winter of trying to find siding that went with our faded and odd color of a roof. We probably should have hired a color consultant to help us through this stage. We are picky customers and the installers that we had were a very good match. The foreman didn't seem to mind our many, many questions and our looking over his shoulder just because we were curious as to how this type of work gets done. He and the crew were always pleasant and professional. The foreman also had some excellent suggestions to make our downspout system more esthetically pleasing in several areas. There were several other suggestions that he made concerning some architectural details on the house that we used. We appreciated his solutions to things we never thought of. We are very pleased with our siding and feel totally comfortable that this company will be there for us if we need them in the future.

An older gentleman who had been in the business for many years came to do the quote and he was very nice. He called twice to check and see what my decision was and to see if I had any questions. He was very thorough. The price was very fair. I didn’t know if I wanted to actually replace the windows or if I wanted different type of windows and that is why I haven’t gone with them. I would use them for another quote in the future.

They were recommended to me by a friend. Also they had competitive prices, and they windows come in on time as they had promised. Also they were flexible with the time of installation. They worked around our schedule. Since, it was in the winter they kept the window areas sealed, so our heating bill didn't rise.

The sales process was fine except we had to remind them to give us a start date when the work could begin. The crew showed up on time and finished the job quickly. However, they failed to insulate the lower wall of a bay window because they did not have the tools or the expertise to do it without harming the woodwork. The worst, however, was they removed siding to blow the insulation, and when they put the siding back, about half of it was split, but pieced back together. It looks terrible. To this day, I'm still replacing the broken siding. If I had it to do all over again, I would not have had the work done, or I would have gotten it in writing to replace any broken siding that happened during the job.

Response from Bruin Corp of Framingham
Lead time is always hard to predict due to weather and the volume of jobs that are booked with deposits recieved. If damage to a wall is likely, then installer correctly didn't do the work. The cost of the damage would have been more than the cost recieved for the work. This is an easy business decision and was made correctly. Construction is not always just add water and stir and somethings can not be determined during the sales process. This house had old wood shingles that had deteriorated over time due to the weather and the customer was informed that there was a possibility that shingles would have been damaged. The only way to do blown in insulation is from the outside and to remove the exterior siding. The upside is that this customer now has a warm house and is saving every month on his utility bills.

We had used them in a previous house. Their prices were competitive and their installation crew was good. The quality of the product was there but we didn't like the sales staff. We almost ended up canceling the project because the sales staff wasn't communicating right. At the end of the day we were satisfied with the product but it was a hurdle getting there.

My spouse was overseeing the work when it was done. I was told that they came in on time and did a professional work. All of the people were their employees and were appropriately insured. Nothing untoward and completely satisfactory.
Description of Work: Rob, the sales person, was very warm and friendly and helped me replace my windows and patio door. Windows are windows and pretty much every company's is the same (unless you spend a zillion and get the top of the line). They have a contract with a lesser known company and that was what was suggested - a price that he sells to most people in my condo. But there was a problem Bruin had with the manufacturer close to the delivery and they "bumped" it up to Harvey windows for no additional cost. I found another dealer, after I had verbally agreed with Rob, who said who would give me a lower price (on another brand, not Harvey). I personally thought it would be unethical of me to jump ship at that point; but it seemed that there are other inexpensive options available - so I would urge people to shop around and compare prices of at least 4 vendors. The only put-off I had was with the lady with whom I was trying to schedule an appointment for the work. She was outright rude and I wish Bruin has someone else to talk to customers. It almost seemed that she was doing a favor by replacing my windows! That was not a pleasant feeling. She is the reason why Bruin is getting a "B" on professionalism. But their work was good and I would certainly hire them for another window project.

They were wonderful. The windows were ready almost to the day they estimated, and the crew installed them all in one day. They cleaned up afterwords, and even provided little touches like including inserts for when we put our air conditioners in so that we wouldn't ruin the new windows.
Description of Work: We needed to replace windows that were original to the house (1950's) and we liked Bruin's approach and the quality of the replacement windows. John, our sales person, was very knowledgeable, came to the house multiple times and gave us multiple options based on our priorities. (I.E. replace every window in the house, just the leaky ones, etc.) He even gave us estimates on work he knew we would not be doing immediately, just so we could have an idea what those other projects might run. We ended up replacing 12 windows.

Bob came and measured the windows and gave me the price. He also measured and gave me a price for insulation and said the windows take about 8 weeks to come in and told me what had to be done. Asked if was OK to have separate appointments for the windows and insulation. A couple of weeks later, they called for an appointment for the insulation and was completed in a couple of hours. They cleaned up, put everything back where it was. The windows took longer than expected to come in from the manufacturer by about two weeks. They took two days as expected to install. Chris and his team were very pleasant, moved curtains, furniture, took down shades and put everything back the way they found it. They vacuumed up in addition to putting down drop cloths. I was very impressed with the care they took in putting everything back in place. Kathy in the office has been a great assistance in helping me with the energy rebates.

The actual installation was a quality job. The workman fitted the windows carefully, carpentry work on the trim was very good and the cleanup was complete. Everything else about the project did not go as planned. The order was placed and a 50% deposit was given in August; actual installation didn't happen until December. Our contact at Bruin did not do well with details and we had to chase him for information or to follow-up for us. The first delivery was for windows with fixed bottom windows. The error wasn't noticed until the workmen found that the new windows were the wrong size and wouldn't fit into the openings--second problem. Windows for the second delivery were correctly sized with awning openings and tempered glass on the bottom. However the awning windows were not Energy Star rated--third problem. We have asked for but not received any compensation for their failure to deliver windows that meet order specifications.
Description of Work: Replace windows for seven large, picture window openings. Each opening consisted of two windows--a fixed picture window on top and an awning opening window on the bottom. The bottom awning windows required tempered glass because of their height from the floor. All windows were to be Energy Star rated. Manufacturing was subcontracted to Harvey Windows. All of this information was on the work order.

SUN ROOM IS BEAUTIFUL AND WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. WE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE WORK STARTING, CREW CAME ONE MONDAY AND WE DIDN'T SEE THEM AGAIN UNTIL THE FOLLOWING MONDAY AND A COUPLE OF CALLS FROM ME. THEN AT END OF JOB, ROOM WAS FINISHED WITH EXCEPTION OF FRAME AROUND DOOR AND CLEAN UP.
