aI met with Robert in my home mid-Dec 2012 to discuss the project. I hired Robert and requested I get something in writing so we both know up front what would be expected, which I never received. We discussed prices and agreed his fee to oversee this project would be $10,000.00 - $12,000.00 and would take approx 3 weeks to complete. He and his crew showed up at my home 12/26/12 to begin work. As I was anxious to get my bathroom completed, I allowed Robert and the workers to begin without a contract in hand. As the worked progressed, I found that Robert would drop off his crew in the am and return to get them in the afternoon while quickly looking at what was completed that day. All seemed to be going well, despite endless dusty days of sanding after the sheet rock was floated. Robert was on hand to frame the new shower. I paid Robert $5716.89 and again requested I receive something in writingfor the complete project but was put off and only provided an invoice for services already rendered. I purchased the porcelain tile and accent tile from my local home improvement store. The person Robert employed to cut an install the tile, although highly recommended, failed miserably in his ability to properly and professionally complete the job. After an entire week of tile installation, I found jagged edges were allowed to be used, numerous tiles were broken which wasted a lot of money. The margin at the ceiling sloped to an unacceptable level and Robert was emailed a photo. He advised a molding could be installed to cover up the difference. Robert insisted his brother also help with the tile install. It wasn't until after the tile job was complete that we found out he had not performed this type work before on a professional level. Paying both workers by the hour, without any incentive to work in an industrious fashion, taking multiple smoking brakes caused the final cost to skyrocket. If any additional materials were needed, I would have to drive to pick them up. The workers, for whatever reason, did not have vehicles at their disposal and could not purchase new blades, etc. when needed. Robert and I met with his recommended vendor for custom cabinetry for measurements .Once the design was approved, I made a deposit payment to the cabinet maker directly. I was instructed to visit the granite vendor to make a selection after Robert made a phone call to advise the vendor of the project. I selected a 2 inch granite with a half rolled edging. The glass vendor measured (without Robert being present) for glass based on the 2 inch granite I selected. Robert and I met with the cabinet maker and agreed on a black cabinet in lieu of the white cabinet we previously discussed. Based on this change, I decided a different color granite needed to be selected. I returned to the granite vendor and advised I needed to change the color only with all other specs being the same, even going as far as pointing to an example at the store and paid a $1000.00 deposit. Another payment of $6000.00 was made to Robert and again I requested a breakdown of what I was paying him for, which was never provided. My final selection for the counter tops, unbeknownst to me, was a traverine, not available in 2 inch thickness. The final measurements were completed, again without Robert's presence, and the tile arrived to be installed. Once again Robert was mia while the counter tops were being installed claiming I hired the vendor directly. One of the counter tops was cut too short, but that vendor rectified the issue quickly by replacing that piece. When the glass installer arrived he said "we have a problem". The measurements he had taken and the glass that was cut were based on 2 inch granite. The travertine installed was only 1 inch leaving us with the option of using shims and extra caulk to complete the installation. Robert was contacted immediately and could not offer a solution the than using extra caulking. I was not happy with this option and was fortunate the tile vendor was able to raise the wall caps by recutting and adding an extra layer to make the thickness 2 inches so the glass could be installed, at which time, I paid the balance owed to the installer. I still have a bathroom that is unfinished (upper cabinet installation, molding around floor and window, cabinet and door hardware not installed) and, to top it all off, the tiles on the front of the shower bench just fell off of today. The dark gray grout I chose dried to an unacceptable motled light gray. I cannot express the frustration I feel due to the lack of the contractor's involvement in this project. Given the amount of money I paid To Robert Nauck to oversee this project I feel I did not receive the service I deserved and expected. He has since moved on to another project without completing mine. I would not recommend this service provider to anyone looking for a quality renovation. Photos of the completed job have been taken, and the thin set used to place the tile is being removed by a qualified tile specialist and analyzed to see if the proper type was used. I would not again allow anyone from this company into my home. Be aware when you choose your contractor. Ask to see their insurance and prior work contacts. Please do not make the mistakes we did . This was our one chance to have a dream bathroom . Instead, it has become a nightmare experience.
Description of Work: I hired Robert Nauck's company, Nauck Electric and Construction Company, to complete my master bathroom remodel. The room had already been gutted, wired, and plumbed. Mr. Nauck was hired by me to sheet rock the walls and ceiling, paint, design and execute the completion of a tiled shower, widen the existing doorway, co-ordinate tile, custom cabinet, and glass vendors, and finish the project with wood moulding See Below description of damage 04-14-2013, 10:01 AM #1 brianclement Newbie Join Date: Apr 2013 Posts: 1 Trouble with tile in shower We recently had a custom shower built. Tile was ( glued ? ) to bench area directly to hardy board. After sitting for approximately two months to dry, the shower was eventually finished. Now two pieces have fallen off. If any one can help, I would sure appreciate some input. The substance behind the tile is soft still. Attached Thumbnails Last edited by brianclement; 04-14-2013 at 10:59 AM. That's mastic, which is not the right adhesive to use in wet applications. You'll need to remove at least part of the shower tiles especially the lower parts & horizontal. Was the floor done that way too? Can you describe how it was all built and the materials used? Who did the work. obviously not a tile setter right?
