Services we don't offer
We try to meet all our customers needs, don't see your project listed, just give us a call and we can talk about your needs.
We were quoted an estimate on the high end but were told the final cost could not be determined until they received the engineers bill but adjustments would be made. To make a long story short only one beam/pole was reinforced but they still charged us full price. When we asked why the high price had to remain we were told it was due to the welder they hired. We reluctantly paid the bill so they (A-O-K) would not have to bear the overcharge but asked they pass along the welder contact information so we could receive an itemized invoice. Since that time we've tried to contact A-O-K multiple times via text, phone and email but they have not returned our messages. All we want is to either receive an itemized bill from the welder/engineer to help us understand the outrageous charges or a partial refund. After months of looking for the right contactor we hired this husband/wife team but are very disappointed with their unprofessionalism by repeatedly ignoring the customer and not caring one bit about satisfaction. PS. Other points to note: Light switch by laundry room was removed but not reinstalled, bump/raise in floor were pole was removed, granite sink cut unevenly, cabinet over refrigerator not the same size as others, originally quoted job-time of 2-3 weeks but instead it took 7.
Description of Work: We hired A-O-K to partially finish our basement. They were to reinforce and remove two beams/poles, install a sink, cabinets and floor tile for an 8 x 8 area.

When we signed the contracts on 07-10-2013, we were told that the drywall work would begin within 2 weeks, but there were several delays. First, we were told that there was a family illness and shortly after that there was another delay because thier regular worker(s) were unavailable. On 08-05-2013, the materials were finally delivered and work was to begin the following day but no one showed up. Then on 08-07-2013, we were contacted by two of our new neighbors, who had also called the police, because the owner of A-O-K and his employee were involved in such a heated exchange that our neighbors feared it would become violent. We had to change the key code on that day out of fear of retribution from the terminated employee. Eventually, they found two warm bodies to hang drywall and they worked for several weeks before A-O-K realized and/or acknowledged that their work was unacceptable. A reputable contractor would have realized immediately that their workers were not using standard practice for hanging drywall when they put up the walls before the ceiling; either A-O-K was not on-site supervising their work or their professional competence is severely lacking. Either way, that is not ?workmanlike manner? or ?standard practice? as your contract assures. On 09-23-2013, were were told that A-O-K did a walk through and ?so far so good? but mentioned that there were a ?few spots that need attention.? On 09-26-2013,we were told that paint and touch ups will be done ?early next week? (10-01-2013) and that they?d like to start the tile before 10-08-2013. On 10-04-2013, we were told that the subcontracted drywall installers had been fired and that, ?we didn?t fire them until we had a replacement,? which means that they allowed them to continue working in our home even though A-O-K already knew their work was unacceptable. The newly fired workers then threatened to put a lien on my home because they said A-O-K didn?t pay them for the work they did. On 10-06-2013, we were greeted by another new person working on the walls. When we asked how long he'd been working with A-O-K, he said that they found his advertisement on Craig?s List 2 days prior and he started working in our home the next day. He said he was hired to fix the poor workmanship of the previous workers and that he would do the best he could but was afraid he wouldn?t be able to make all the necessary improvements within the timeframe that A-O-K had given him. There were multiple instances of poor workmanship in every single room from uneven walls to insufficient amount of screws required by state code, bubbled surfaces, visible cracks in corners, visible seams, drywall mud left on the floors, baseboards and my personal tools as well as imprecise angles and ceilings that were improperly screwed therefore uneven. We were also charged $2800 for paint supplies and labor for work that was either done on incomplete walls or not done at all. We should also mention that A-O-K used my paint gun equipment to paint, which was not authorized and should have been clearly understood based on a previous conversation in which they were told not to use my personal equipment. The last straw was when it came time to prepare for tile work and we were told that they would have to charge more if we were planning to use more than one type of tile. Not once was that ever stipulated, verbally or in writing that their quote was for one type of tile only. This only became an issue after the additional time and expense that resulted from their drywall incompetencies. It feels as if they were trying to recoup the drywall repair expenses by charging us more than they had initially quoted for tile work. According to our contract, A-O-K states, ?all work to be completed in a workmanlike manner according to standard practice.? Unfortunately, after dealing with them for several months, this was clearly not the case and their breach of contract obligated us to terminate further services with them. Since that time, we have spent an additional $1500 for drywall services in order to correct substandard work performed by A-O-K. As of 01-19-2014, we have yet to receive a response to the certified letter sent on 12-23-2013 in which our deposit refund was requested.
Description of Work: We had 2 separate contracts: 1 for drywall and skim coat throughout house and 1 for tile work in 4.5 bathrooms. Due to incomplete and substandard drywall work, and the contractor's attempt to increase our agreed upon price for tile work, we had no choice but to terminate the 2nd contract for which we had already paid a deposit. We have still not received the refund we requested via certified mail on 12-23-2013

Response from A-O-K Home Improvements & Contracting
This is written in response to your correspondence received at the end of December. In the original contract we provided to you at the end of June it contained prices and explanations for all 3 services to be provided. Which was a Quote for drywall and minor plaster repair, tile for two different kinds of tile and refinishing of the hardwood with three coats as. Along with that it was also explained in this contract that, that was a price for” all” work stated in the contract and any deviations would cause the price to change. And that you were responsible for the relocation of all your items and they were to be removed before we delivered and goods. On July 5th you requested to be put on our schedule for the fourth week of July, which I responded that I would call you in a little bit to discuss the possibilities. Upon our phone conversation I proceeded to tell you “Outside of a contract being signed and a down payment to secure a spot that would not be likely”. Your next concern was how soon we could sign a contract with you. So we met on July 10th and requested that I write separate but “Vague” quotes for the drywall and tile and hardwood, because you are going to try and get money from the government to aid in your cost of these projects. So we did. We then attempted on many occasions to have materials delivered, but as you may know that it also states in our contract that any unforeseen events, such as the weather, is not under my control. On July 30th we contacted you to see if you had your framing inspection had been done and had removed all your belongings from the rooms, so materials could be delivered. At this time you also informed us that the insulation was still to be sprayed in the attic and in the basement. With all your issues holding up progress we also were still experiencing lots of rain and continued to get rain until August 2nd. We them informed you that no matter the conditions the delivery will be scheduled for August 5th. Upon our arrival nothing had been moved out of the way for the drywall products to be brought in. So our company had to move your things out of the way while you stood by and watched. Therefore incurring an additional charge. August 7th we were to start on your drywall job. However due to unforeseen circumstances we had to fire our drywall lead and therefore lost our drywall crew as well. Then we changed the combination to the lock box we provided for the duration of our time there. Because of the interruption of service we were providing to you we contacted you immediately by text and by phone, but it was two hours later when you responded and we explained what had happened with our drywall lead and what we believed was going to happen with the crew. At that point we offered to return your down payment and let you find someone else to finish the job. Or we could try and find someone else to come in and do the work and we would oversee the project. You chose the latter of the two options. We were then ready to start the job on August 9th. However you were not. You constantly would inform us of different parts of the house that could not be done. Because of something else someone else had not finished. That slows progress down tremendously as you have experienced. We addressed how things in the attic would need to be moved, and you would reply, you will get to them and then would never do it. So there were many times that us and the guys would have to move these things out of the way or try to work around them. As to the hanging of the drywall, it is preference as to how drywall is hung. It is simply easier to hang the ceilings first and walls second. But With all the stuff left in and on the floors at all times by your other contractors and yourself it was easier to hang the walls first and the ceilings last. We did decide after seeing the coats of mud being put on, the guys were not as experienced as they had said they were and we fired them. We did not fire them until we had a replacement because the day we fired them we hired a new crew with them there. The guys we found were very good at finishing and upon your arrival you were very pleased with what you saw. Before the finishing crew left, the lead Randy, Anthony and yourself went throughout the entire house with flood lights no less than 5 foot from the walls to inspect every inch and hit any missed or overlooked areas. Everything was hit and/or touched up on all walls to your satisfaction. During the priming of all the walls, our paint gun broke in the middle of spraying the attic area and previously you had offered for Anthony to use yours. When we used it for that afternoon we did not use any of your attachments. We used all of our own attachments and hose, when we were finished we cleaned it up and left it in better condition than what we found it in. If the use of your gun is still ailing you please deduct from your balance $45.00 for the rental of your equipment. Which is what we rent them for at any hardware store and the rental at Sherwin Williams would have been free if we would have known that the offer no longer was open. The paint was complete at the end of all the drywall work and we received a satisfactory response from you. Several times we asked you when the tile would be here and ready for us to install you were not sure of all the stuff you needed so we told you what to get. The concrete board was short on two different occasions and you had to retrieve more. You told us that the tile was scheduled to start arriving the Wednesday before you left for Colorado. It never came. In between all the drywall finishing that was going on we prepped all the bathroom walls and hung the concrete board that was provided. Upon your arrival from your much needed time off, in the attic we discussed the different ways you wanted your tile designed, at that time we were taken aback when you told us there were to be four or five different tiles used in just the attic alone. We then informed you that was outside of our contract and the price would increase drastically for anything above the original two tiles as per the original contract. At that point we told you we could not do the tile work for the price we quoted you and that to please get other quotes from licensed and insured contractors to see our new price was on the money. You said that would have to discuss this with Jennifer and get back to us. We told you that we needed or final payment. Which was also never paid. We contacted you on several occasions after that by phone and requested that payment be made. You never responded once that you were unsatisfied and still have not said that you are unsatisfied with the completed work. You can either make the payment in full and once received and processed we will return the down payment for the tile, minus the tile work that’s already been completed. Or you can submit payment for what’s left owed.
