Horrible. I'm not even sure where to begin. The owner Doug Roy came out and gave us an estimate that was middle to higher end price of the other estimates we received. However, he appeared nice and we were anxious/excited to get our new deck built and without any research into him we hired him. (Rookie mistake, always research online and require references.) Each day he would show up at a minimum one hour later than stated the work day would begin. Basic days would be 9-10am to 3-4pm. Random workers would show up. One would get dropped off at our house very early in the morning, not notify us he was here and let himself into our backyard to sleep in our hammock and pee on our trees. He stopped that after he met our German Shepherd one morning. :) The time frame had been promised for 2 weeks, as we were going out of town, and did not want workers here while we were gone. As the time got closer and closer, less and less progress was made. There were mistakes made that were not corrected until pointed out by my husband, and of course then that would set them back even further. *Side note: We did all of the demo ourselves so they had nothing but a clean slate to start with. It had been agreed upon, even put into the contract that he would haul away any debris or dirt excavated. Amazingly we began to find fill dirt (dirt mixed with rock and stones) under our pine trees and random places in our yard. Large chunks of limestone were being piled up in hidden places. It boiled down to Doug refusing to speak to me about it, and asking to speak to my husband. He stood at my front door and and screamed at me, knowing I was 5 months pregnant. His embarassed workers tried to stop him without success and they eventually hid in their cars. I ended up slamming the door in his face as he made me cry. And the basis of his company is that he runs a "good, clean, Christian company". Yeah, right. Two weeks passed and the deck was not close to being complete. He said he would finish it while we were gone. We said absolutely not, as had been previously discussed. At this point we didn't trust him at all. He refused to come out after our trip, stating it was our fault the project was delayed. Months passed and after threatening complaints with the BBB and also legal action, he finally came back out in late October/November to finish. He then had to come back out and completely redo the rails because he chose a random rail height instead of using the metal balasters that had been available for his use since day one of the project. *Side Note: To save money, we installed balusters ourselves. Even less work for him, yet he still messed up on it! All in all, Doug Roy is an absolutely horrible man, with an even worse work ethic. The deck is of decent quality, but after going through what we did with him, not even worth it. Save your money and your sanity and go with someone, anyone else.
