I called for an estimate to have a bathtub and shower replaced and possibly replace the flooring depending on cost. We were pretty sensitive to cost as this is a home we don't plan to be in for more than a year or so and didn't want to spend a bunch of money. We were looking for some one to do the larger portion of the work while I would complete the balance myself to save a little money. Al listened very well to my concerns and presented several different options suggesting alternatives that would be most economical. He was very knowledgeable. We exchanged phone calls and emails and arrived at a solution that was within our budget. He always responded in a timely manner. Bob performed work and did an outstanding job. This is our only shower so we were a little concerned about the timeliness but it was out and back in in a couple days. He was always there when he said he would be. The bathroom was always left clean at the end of the day. Bob was patient answering any questions that came up during the process. Once completed we decided we wanted a couple additional things done and Bob was out the next week to complete them. Overall it was a great experience from the initial phone calls and estimation process to the completed project. I called several other companies. Some just gave me a bid over the phone without even seeing the bathroom. Others were quick to provide a solution without really listening to what we were trying to accomplish, which often translated into more money than we were looking at spending. I would recommend Mission Kitchen and Bath to anyone of our friends (and already have to a co-worker). We are looking forward to working with them again in the future!
Description of Work: Replaced tub and shower. Replaced vinyl flooring. Some drywall repairs.
Very well--Henry was UNBELIEVABLE. :-) He was 100% on-time and worked straight through. I was surprised he didn't even take much of a lunch break! He was very pleasant, easygoing and helpful, answering all my questions and advising when needed. From walkthrough to finish, the job only took a week and a half. Henry was a very CLEAN contractor--the dust was minimal. I have severe allergies and he took the utmost care in making sure there was a zippered tarp separating the work area from our sleeping area and protective plastic covering the bed, along with dropcloths on the rugs and an industrial air cleaner in the work space. In addition, both Al and Sonya were always available and instantly accessible for any assistance we needed. The result is astounding. It truly will be a luxury using our master bath; after everything we've been through in the last year-and-a-half with it, having the security that it is not only beautiful but also DONE CORRECTLY is worth every penny we spent.
Description of Work: Remodel of bathtub/shower area; basically fixing another contractor's shoddy job. Job included a complete resealing of the shower/tub area with professional cement board, complete retiling of both bathtub and shower, new shower doors installed, new shower, bath and sink fixtures, reframing of closet door, and repainting the surrounding wall.

We wanted to have our existing cabinets modified to accommodate a larger range. Al looked at the area and immediately asked what our other prospective remodelers told us. He expressed frustration when I asked for his "expert opinion" before telling him what others had suggested. He didn't offer his own suggestion, so we just had to tell him what the other remodelers had told us. Even though we explained that we didn't want to gut our cabinets, he continued to criticize the quality of our cabinets. By the way, the cabinets are in pristine condition and all other remodelers have agreed that they should be kept. The most frustrating and serious part of our meeting with Al was when we asked for a rough estimate. He refused to offer an estimate and insisted that we tell him how much money we can spend. We were uncomfortable with that idea because every other remodeler was able to give a rough quote without asking what our budget is. After a bit of arguing about this, he finally gave us a number that was over twice the amount of all our previous quotes. We immediately asked for a breakdown of the number and he got very upset. Finally, he admitted that he literally "pulled the number out of thin air." At this point, we realized that he was not looking out for our best interests. We have only received quotes from the highest rated Angies List names and were by far the most frustrated with our short experience with this company. If there's a silver lining, it's that he made it very easy for us to exclude him from our options.
Description of Work: We had him come over and give us a quote on a kitchen remodel.

I did meet with the member on Wednesday September 15 for a kitchen remodel project. I believe I was there no more than 15-20 minutes. Our meeting did not go as well as I wished it would have. After listening to the details of the scope of their project, I ask them “what our budget limitations were,” for the project. The customer became increasingly defensive and commented “We want the best craftsmanship with the lowest price.” I began to feel very uncomfortable and said “I was not feeling a good vibe,” and they agreed. I then said “life is short, and it is very important to feel comfortable with who you work with.” I then gathered my stuff, said it was “nice to meet them,” and wished them a “successful project”. As a professional, I have had to tell a few potential clients that we would not be a good fit. No one wants to walk away from business, but sometimes, this is the best thing. The bulk of our business is from past clients, their referrals, and of course, Angie’s List Members! You do not stay in business in this economy unless you always have the client’s best interest at heart. We make “clients for life,” so it is very important to feel comfortable with whom you work with. This is not a typical Angie’s List Member, and it is unfortunate the member felt the need to rate us for services we did not render.

Sonya was very responsive and provided a proposal to us exactly when she promised it. The proposal was detailed and very easy to understand. The only feedback I would provide is that she did miss a couple items that I requested to be included in the proposal, but that would have been a very easy fix if we had decided to proceed with Mission Kitchen and Bath. I would be happy to consider them for future projects on our home.
Description of Work: Mission Kitchen and Bath provided us an estimate for our master bath remodel, including replacing our bathtub, vanities, flooring, and tile in the shower. We did not choose Mission Kitchen and bath simply because of referrals and pricing for another company that also provided a proposal were slightly stronger. Mission's proposal was detailed and straightforward, with fair pricing.

We had an eyesore of a bathroom remodeled by Mission Kitchen & Bath. Al is a pleasure to work with...especially compared to the other people who gave us estimates. Our project wasn't huge, but he didn't treat us that way. Matt, who did the work, was wonderful to say the least. My son was sad when he stopped coming to our house to do work. We did have one problem, there was no attic access above our bathroom, but they still found a way to get the exhaust fan installed like I wanted! I am so thankful for that!
Description of Work: Completely remodeled and replaced everything in our bathroom, although the tub remained. Installed new tile on the floor & walls. In addition they installed a new toilet, sink & faucets for sink & shower. Installed exhaust fan.

First and most important haha....they came in at or under their estimate. Second, they were willing to haul a cast iron tub up a flight of stairs, which some contractors don't like to do. I am very happy with the cast iron tub. Third, it is an old house and they are used to working with old houses and knew what they were doing. Fourth, the new cast iron tub has a nonslip grid in the bottom...very important. I was thinking about getting a vintage tub but the new cast iron tub with the nonslip grid was a good idea. No ugly mats or stick-on daisies like when I was a kid.
Description of Work: I had a fiberglass tub and surround taken out and a new cast iron tub installed, with updating to the shower plumbing and new tile on the walls around the new tub.

We love the bathroom, it looks great. The person doing the work had never installed a heated floor before. After the bathroom was complete and we turned on the heat, only one section of the floor worked. They had to come out and totally rip out the entire floor and start over. At that time he was on another job so had to do it all in his spare time. In order to save our flooring when hauling materials in and out of our garage they put plastid sheeting on the floor. When removed it left a sticky residue on our hardwoods and the linoleum in the laundry room. I spent hours on my hands and knees cleaning off the residue. Unfortunately, the linoleum has grooves that I was unable to clean so it now had dark sport and has yellowed where the sheeting was applied. The installed did not leave enough carpet when cutting it off to create a nice transition from bedroom and closet to the bathroom so we have raw edges showing and continual fraying of the edges. This will necessitate unnecessary replacement of the carpet before it is worn out. So, although the bathroom looks great and they were wonderful to work with, they left some lasting problems in other areas of the house.

First of all, these were great clients and sometimes , things simply go wrong. The project was completed around December of 2007. It is ironic that the protective plastic film we use to use to protect our clients flooring began to leave a residue on carpeting and vinyl. Fortunately it does clean off, but we discontinued using it for that very reason. Heat mat installations are tricky, and it was the first time that craftsman had installed one. However, he was supervised by a very experienced employee, both of which are still with us. Anyone who has a lot of experience with heat mats has had an installation failure. We check the heat mat’s continuity before, during, and after the mat is installed. However, if the mat is energized within the first 28 days, it can generate moisture which can cause a short circuit. We will never really know exactly what happened. Anyway, after the job was completed, the owner notified us of the failure. Since we were in the midst of another remodeling project, at no cost to our client, I chose to pay overtime to so our installer to remove and replace the heat mat and tile flooring after business hours. This was primarily because our client was in a hurry and we did not want to disturb the progress of our other project. It is always our mission to satisfy our clients.

I want to share that the overall experience with Al and Sonya, and the completion of the project by Matt, was excellent. I used Angie's List as a primary resource in my search, and was impressed by Mission's reputation and awards. Al provided references, and each one I phoned said I couldn't go wrong with selecting them. (One couple I called were parents of two children I taught. They sang the praises of Mission K&B.) I did get two other bids by very reputable remodelers, who were also highly rated by Angie's List. They, too, made a good impression, but I found that Al listened and was very willing to work within my budget. He was friendly and professional. After accepting the bid, I worked closely with Sonya to select just the right products. She was so helpful, and directed me to the best choices. All members of the team meet at our home to go over what would happen...when it would happen...and how long it would take --- and it was right on the button! I met the electrician who did a great job. The major artisan who worked in the kitchen was Matt...and his attention to detail was superior. And by the way...HE CLEANS BETTER THAN I DO!!! Please, don't hesitate to work with this company.
Description of Work: Installation of granite countertop and tile backsplash; addition of two ceiling fans; removal of old lighting which was replaced by canned lighting, pendant lighting and undercounter lighting; re-wiring of kitchen; installation of dishwasher and microwave hood; design and product suggestions; staff accompanied us to various suppliers' stores/showrooms.

“Thank You”, for taking the time to submit a report of your experience with Mission Kitchen & Bath. Both of you were a complete pleasure to work with. Working with clients such as yourself makes our job “fun”. As the designer and project manager it was exciting to see the both of you make your material selections. There was never a situation that I had to become the mediator when designers have to “design for the sexes”. You both respected each others opinion and built upon each suggestion. The most fun we had was selecting the light fixture over the sink. You wanted to find something unique and spend a little more attention to detail there. Greg was the one that spotted “the fixture”. It was wonderful. The investment you made to your kitchen you will now enjoy everyday. This is what is all about – “we are happy when our clients are happy”. We walk away feeling very proud of our work. A referral such as yours is “priceless”, thanks again. Sonya Lange – Designer/Project Manager

We scheduled an appointment and they never showed up. When we called, they stated they new nothing about the appointment. I again gave my name, address and phone number to reschedule. I begin by describing the first part of the project. That seemed to go well. I then begin to descibe a cabinet project. After starting to describe the project, I was interrupted, and they stated "we are not clicking" and "we will pass on this project." The person was disruptive, confrontational and unprofessional. Avoid this company.

I never had the opportunity to speak with or meet in person the member. He had called and spoken with our designer. She is an extremely capable "people" person. Since our office is small, I could hear her side of the conversation. She asked him some questions and made an appointment for me. We talked about how he was difficult, but sometimes folks are different in person. Afterwords, I entered the appointment into our Outlook Calendar which down loads into my PDA. Somehow, the appointment never saved, or was erased. Much to my embarrassment, I did stand the member up. I always call prior to our appointments to reconfirm, but somehow, the information simply vanished. At the appointed hour, he called the office wondering where I was. Once again, our designer answered the phone. When informed we had missed the appointment, I heard her apologize several times. After about five minutes of conversation, she informed him that she felt they were not "clicking" and he would be better served by someone else. I do feel bad I missed our appointment, which I would like to stress, is the only time that has ever happened. In our 5 years of association with Angie's List, the worst rating we ever received was a B on one of the survey questions from a client who then hired us again! We have had simply the nicest clients from Angie's List, and I have commented numerous times how lucky we are to work with such nice people. The facts are, I have never met with, or spoken to the member. He is not, and has never been a client of ours, and does not represent the typical Angie's List Member.

My wife and I found Mission Kitchen & Bath on Angie's List. Al promptly responded to our inquiry and scheduled an appointment for an on-site visit. He thoroughly discussed the renovation process, listened to our ideas, and gave us a number of options. Work began on the scheduled date. Henry worked on our first bathroom. Sonya understood that we were both overwhelmed with choices and guided us through the selection process. Henry, Al, and Sonya were very solicitous following my emergency quadruple by-pass in the midst of the first bathroom renovation. I returned home after bathroom one was completed and they insisted on delaying the second renovation for a week to allow some additional quiet time following my return home. Scott completed the second renovation and was also constantly considerate of my health needs. We are delighted with the new bathrooms. They are both beautiful, stylish, and, most importantly, are exactly what we had hoped for. We are hoping to have our kitchen done in the near future and plan on using Mission Kitchen & Bath for this job as well.

Mission Kitchen & Bath did a good job on our total shower replacement. Al, the owner, came out and did the initial consult and estimate. Scott did our replacement, and he did a very good job. He showed up on time, was professional, and did the job with a minimum of mess and intrusion. He bagged all of the old shower tile for us in a way that we could dispose of it ourselves with our normal trash removal over a couple of weeks time, which saved a lot of money over paying them for removal. We opted to do the painting ourselves, so Scott prepped the walls to the point where all that we had to do was paint them. We are pleased with both the quality of materials and workmanship. Mission Kitchen & Bath subcontracts the shower door installation to another local company. Scott took care of all of the coordinating with the door company so that they showed up while he was there to do their measurements, etc. The door company came out a few days after Scott was finished and installed the door, which took no more than 30 minutes. We were very pleased with the quality of their product and their workmanship as well.

We are not mold remediators and should not be in this catagory. In this case, we simply repaired a ceiling. As remodelers, we encounter mold often. Without testing, no one knows if it is or is not a toxic mold. When we encounter mold, we will simply spray it with a bleach and water solution to kill it. The debris is disposed of in sealed bags and removed. This is a standard operating procedure for most remodelers, and should not be confused as mold remeditation. However, we do apreciate the nice the good rating!

From start to finish, Mission Kitchen & Bath was both professional and friendly. It is clear they have a lot of experience in kitchen remodels, as they provided helpful advice every step of the way. They estimated a 4 - 6 week project and it took a full 6 weeks. They were very accommodating when it came to special requests and we never felt as if we were being nickeled/dimmed. They were honest and fair in all their dealings. I will most definitely have them back to remodel our master bathroom.
Description of Work: Henry was the lead carpenter for our project and performed a complete kitchen and laundry room remodel. We had the flooring, cabinetry (merilatt), and countertops (granite) all replaced in each room. We also had wall paper removed in the laundry room and the ceilings refinished with knock-down in each room. Henry hung all cabinets, trim work, performed dry wall repairs, and tiled the laundry floor & kitchen backsplash. A separate flooring company and electrician were sub-contracted.

I was dubious but his solution came out cheaper, easier and it looks great. Al is a professional who can be counted on to provide a quality job. He told me up front that he wouldn't be the cheapest, but I think he has to be one of the best. Bob, who did the actual work, was a skilled craftsman and a gentleman who was a pleasure having in our home while he did the work.
Description of Work: Al installed a new shower over the original ceramic tile shower stall which had begun leaking. Because the entire bath area was of the same tile, a different solution would have required tearing out all of the drywall and rebuilding. While we were at it, we enlarged the shower.
The project went very well. Al Feldman (the owner) came out and initially looked at our bathrooms. He was very professional and provided a very good explanation of the process. He put together a very detailed bid that explained how the job was being priced and also provided us with some options. He communicated with us throughout the process, and came out to check on the progress of the project several times. On the first day of the job, he came to our house with Scott (who did the job) and again told us what would be involved, and gave us an estimate of how long it would take to complete (approximately 12 days for three bathrooms). Scott did an excellent job. He was very detail oriented and a very good craftsman. He identified problems and corrected them as needed, at no additional cost. He also completed some additional work that was not originally in the contract. Scott completed everything within the original quoted time frame.
Description of Work: Scott tore out the existing tile, shower base, and fixtures for two showers and a bath, replaced the wall board, re-tiled all three, installed new shower base, including an Onyx base in one shower, and installed new fixtures. He also completed repairs to the walls around the showers, leveled the flooring so the showers would drain properly, bleached and reinforced studs that had water damage, added grab bars to the bath tub, and replaced baseboard in all three bathrooms.

MK&B was great! Al is straight forward giving great feedback as to what would and would not work in my initial kitchen plan, developing good alternative choices, and working within my budget. Sonja, kitchen designer, helped me make my back splash and floor tile choices (all in one day!) as well as choosing a great paint color. (I really struggled with all these decisions!) Henry did a fantastic job on the actual work in the kitchen; removal & installation. Al gave me a time line and he was right-on! Henry gave me daily updates on the kitchen and answered all my questions/concerns each day so there really wasn't much to f/u on at the end of the job. They did a creative problem solve when my microwave trim kit didn't fit. Al, Sonja, and Henry were available by phone and email whenever I needed information. All my issues were resolved in a timely fashion; very professional! I couldn't have asked for a better experience for my first attempt at remodeling!
