The Mad Hatter Chimney Service

Dennis was very professional and provided excellent advice on maintaining the fireplace and chimney.

This was our first chimney sweep so it is hard to compare it to past experiences but the person was on time, he put down a cover on the rug near the fireplace and swept the chimney and vacuumed the fireplace interior. He also did a visual inspection of the flue and exterior of the chimney and noted rust on the chase pan. When he was finished he cleaned up the area. The whole process took about 40 min.

We were buying a home. Our inspector said the chimney needed repair. The old owners had The Mad Hatter come to inspect the chimney. The Mad Hatter said it was cosmetic and didn't need to be repaired. We paid The Mad Hatter to sweep the chimney. When we had a fire, we had problems with the smoke coming back into our house. We called another chimney company that we had worked with in the past. They said the chimney problems were NOT cosmetic and needed to be fixed and that our inspector had been correct. The original owner should have paid for this. Due to the Mad Hatter giving out false information, we have to pay to fix the chimney. We are very disappointed in The Mad Hatter.

Sean Anderson not only showed up a few minutes early, he is one of the few contractors to find my house without getting lost and having to call. He was scrupulous about keeping the house free of soot and ashes and protected the rug in front of the fireplace.. He cleaned up completely after he was finished and explained that the damper was closed so I didn't try to start a fire with it that way. He noticed some rust on insert and inspected the chimney from the outside, found and sealed four large cracks and sealed of the cap around the mortar. No extra was charged for this service. Sean was professional, did the work quickly and efficiently and based on my observation, was thorough. He also used a soft brush so as not to scratch the Stainless steel insert.... The Mad Hatter has my business next year.

The price was between $500-600. The final cost was significantly more than what they quoted us. When the technician was finished, he took some of the things that he removed from the chimney out to the sidewalk and then backed over them on accident. He stated that he would report this, but no one ever got back with us. The quality of the work was fine. We would use them again in the future, because they have done other work for us in the past and have generally done a good job.

I recently purchased the home, and tuckpointing the chimney was part of the work the sellers were supposed to do. They did the work, but the quality was very very poor. So I arranged to have The Mad Hatter clean up the tuckpointing, repair the chimney crown and water seal the bricks. The guys arrived late, but immediately got to work. While the brick mason was setting up he noticed the water damage to the brick exterior of the house under the windows, and recommended water sealing under the windows as a "stop-gap" measure until I could arrange for an exterior tuckpointing (quote was given). The tuckpoint clean up was beautiful and well done. The crown looks good. The water sealing we have to wait to see what happens, but I would think it is good, because everything else the Mad Hatter has done has been good.

The work was done with 0 mess. Price seemed a little high in comparison to other reports on Angie's List, and it only took about 30 minutes. But I very much appreciated the service man's explanations, including a report on the rusting cap, and how to remove the hanging/sliding screen which is old and bent out of shape.

They were here in an hour. I'm already planning on using them again.

He did a nice job. I had no problems what-so-ever.

The work was done excellently. They showed up on time. They cleaned up after themselves and left the place neat.

They were very professional and did a great job. We were very happy with their services. They got the job done when they said they would have it done and We would recommend them to others.

Mad Hatter came immediately to do an estimate, when I explained we wanted to get a new roof, but wanted this work done first. Other companies would not commit to a time, or wanted to do it 3 weeks later. Their quick response was much appreciated. Their employee, Troy came out punctually. He took out the broken brick. Then because the bricks that were in his van did not meet his standards of matching, he went and got more brick. We were told it would be an all day job, but Troy was so efficient, that he was done mid afternoon. He sealed it before he left. Then he explained that the chimney would look darker than the rest of the brick until the sealer dried. Then the mortar would look lighter than the rest of the house, but with age, would eventually match. Since the chimney is hidden by a tree, this was not a major concern to me. We were able then to move ahead with replacing the roof.

I thought that they did excellent duct work. They did some cleaning and chimney inspections also on my home and I thought that they did a great job and I would recommend them. They did a thorough job.

We expected the work to take all day- it was less than 3 hours from start to finish- 2 guys came to do the job- they were clean, friendly and able to answer questions and explain what they were doing. Hard to say how it ranks compared to cost- we've never had this done before, but we don't feel like we were overcharged for services performed.

Over all the job was good. Dennis was prompt. But there were a few problems with the finished job at the beginning. A few bricks were taken out and mortar was stuck in place of them. I called Dennis and told him that I was not happy and took photos and e-mailed it to him. He immediately called back and sent someone out to take care of the problem. The bricks look great and overall I'm pleased with how he handled it.

He was on time, did a good job. The chimney needed to be cleaned the cap did have a bit of a problem. He had quite to do to get that straightened out and he did a great job. His price was reasonable and we'd use him again.

They responded within 24 hours and scheduled a person to come out the next day. He showed up and told me that the smell was coming from a dead chimney swift. He cleaned out the chimney and put in some kind of deodorizer. He warned us that the smell would dissipate but it may take up to 24 hours. It did take approximately 24 hours before the odor was gone. The price was about what I expected.

My house is 17 years old and to my knowledge never had the chimney swept (we don't have many fires) but I always heard an annoying banging noise when the wind blew. During the inspection the tech showed me a digital photo of the chase pan - it was all rust and the cap also had some rust on it. He didn't try to sell me anything, just told me the facts and let me decide for myself. I opted for stainless steel on the chase pan and went with the only cap I could get. The cap is a touchy issue if you have a "kit" fireplace - UL will not let you change ANYTHING about the fireplace so I was stuck ordering the same ugly cap as I already had (but not rusted). This is NOT the fault of Mad Hatter, it is a SERVICE. They aren't allowed to change anything about the fireplace, so I am glad that they followed the rules. When the tech came to sweep the chimney, his first concern other than performing his job was to make sure that my home did not get full of soot. He was very neat, polite and professional. He told me that the chase pan would be a custom order and would take a few days and explained to me why he was not permitted to install a stainless steel cap. He also gave me advice on the care & maintenance of the new cap.

The representative arrived on time and was very friendly. The price was reasonable. They swept the chimney and gave me tips on what to look for.

There was nothing that we didn't like. They did a great job and they were very punctual. Also they gave us several options for the repair work and they explained all of them to us. The chimney doesn't leak anymore. They did exactly what they said they were going to.

They came to my home to provide an estimate. They explained it exactly what they would do, how long it would take to complete the project, and how many workers they would need to complete the project. They did an excellent job. They took care to keep any mess as contained as possible and cleaned up afterwards.

The company did other work for me recently & I was very pleased with that, but their pricing for whole house air duct cleaning was not very competitive, so I didn't hire them for that piece of the work I needed. This is, however, a good company.

He arrived on time to do the job. He was professional while he worked on my chimney. I would use his services again in the future. The quality of his work was good.

They did a good job. When they showed up he got right up on the roof and replaced the cap. It was very quick and easy. He was very nice, and was able to tend to some other issues while on the roof.

The girl on the phone at Mad Hatter was very professional and very friendly. Two gentlemen came to my house on time. They did not make any messes and explained everything that they were doing. It took them only a couple of hours to clean the air ducts...I believe there were 11.
