Mr Plumber by Metzler & Hallam

Carl, from Metztler's, did give me information as to what should or should not be done in his estimation. He checked over our general plumbing and talked about courses of actions on a couple of options for service and future replacement of our water heater and the potential installation of a battery back-up system for our sump pump. He gave information that was useful and that we will need to make future decisions.

The job went very smoothly and was done in about 1 and 1/2 hours. I liked how they cleaned up after themselves and were very good about explaining everything. Both workers were very professional and offered sound advice about what they were doing.

Work was performed at a rental property and I was able to pay over the phone and handle all of the arrangements without actually being at the property. They prefer the owner is on site but were very accomodating when I told them I could not be there but the tenant was home and there was a definite problem. They were very prompt and honored the coupon as listed. I am very happy with the result thus far. Will definitely be calling them in the future.

I only say I won't use them again because I have a service contract with another company but was trying to get something scheduled quickly. We were having problems with a toilet overflow. The plumber seemed to think that just using the auger on the toilet might fix the problem but said it might be possible the toilet would still have problems and need to be taken up for inspection. Unfortunately just the auger didn't work but I called the other company I have a service agreement with. I thought the price was a bit high for the work performed. Also, in the opinion of the second plumber, our problem is with hard water buildup so the auger was probably not even necessary. Overall, I thought the plumber was following a checklist of things to do but may not have had the experience to go past the checklist and get to the problem faster. I'm sure they would have loved to get another service call later to take up the toilet and try and diagnose the problem and get another $79 service call.

They know what they are doing. Three guys did the work. They thought they were going to remove three shrubs to do the work but they only had to do one. They went under our concrete walkway in front of the house with out any damage to the walk way. Very careful workmanship. Offered additional general information on drainage system. They recommended getting a piece of burlap to wrap around just the root system to keep the root system intact of the small shrub that had to be removed for several hours before being replanted. Also, recommended the plant needed to be watered as well wrapping of the roots. They were very nice to deal with. The area that had been dug ranged from 5 feet in depth to 9 feet in depth. One of the best things they recommended to my husband to get a start in lowering the mound of dirt was that he could purchase a long metal pipe and connect to the hose to mound dirt in various locations, and it will start lowering the dirt back down. My husband purchased a one half inch 5 foot long pipe long to poke in the mound in various areas. The mound was able to be lowered by half its size in a week because of their recommendation. This has made a huge improvement of the lawn. The mound is a lot less obvious.

Plumber arrived on time. Overall, Craig was quite helpful and handled the job very professionally.

The Master Bath drain had not worked for 2 years and had been told by another plumbing company the piping needed to be changed since it was an old house and the steel piping was corroded. Since this would have involved tearing open a wall and probably thousands of dollars of work in redoing a section of the bath, this was a last resort. The drain was cleaned and Jay Martin was very knowledgeable and professional. He is an asset to the company and we will definitely call again in the future and ask for Jay.

He told me I would need a new septic system nd a clean out which would cost about $6100.00. I asked if there was a cheaper option. He said they could just clean the outside for $3100.00. I still felt the price was to high. I called a friend and explained the situation and he told me it sounded like a scam and refereed me to a different plumber. The plumber I went with fixed the problem with a reasonable cost.

Plumber was on time. Well mannered and pleasant individual. Able to fix quickly.

They were able to provide us with some suggestions. We were very happy with their services.

Telephoned RV Hallam for quote -- they said they really needed to see the job to quote, and would not charge a trip fee. If I agreed with the quote, then they would be prepared to make the repair. Other 3 companies I called quoted a flat fee well over what RV Hallam quoted. The repair was made within the hour -- a very nice job! I will definitely call them again!

We had communition problems in the begining, but they cleared it up and ended up doing a great job.

Metzler's Mr. Plumber installed our garbage disposal in November of 2008 that stopped working but was still under warranty. We called Metzler and the person we spoke to on the phone when scheduling the appointment confirmed the garbage disposal was still under warranty, stated that we would need to pay for labor, and that they could not get to us for a week. This was a smelly inconvenience over the 4th of July weekend, but we incorrectly felt that utilizing the warranty and saving the cost of a new disposal would be worth it. The plumber Metzler's Mr. Plumber sent to repair the disposal had no idea the disposal was under warranty, said he had only been with the company a very short time and that most of his plumbing experience was with opening drains. After inspecting the disposal and checking the electrical breaker box, the Metzler plumber quoted $700 to replace the disposal or $800 replace and sign up for a service program. When asked about the warranty, he contacted their office to verify and then quoted us almost $400 in labor to replace the garbage disposal. We declined and paid the $79 service call fee. We called another plumbing company (B&W) who has done a lot of great work for us the last few years. They said they could get to us the next day and did not hesitate in quoting just over $400 for a new disposal. This was nearly the same price, 'parts and labor' and no warranty involved, though likely not the same model disposal. The amazing thing was that when their plumber showed up he immediately found that there was nothing wrong with the disposal, the electrical switch on the wall was bad. It was only pulling 1.8 volts instead of 120 volts. This plumber was very knowledgeable and even recommended a company to repair the switch when I asked, but we had a construction contractor who has done some kitchen remodeling work for the family come out and change the electrical switch on the wall. There was no charge and the garbage disposal works perfectly. We are very thankful we did not let Metzler's perform unnecessary work costing us hundreds of dollars and do not recommend them.

In March of 2011 I called them because our sump pump wouldn't stop running. They sent a young kid out the same afternoon. He looked at the pump for 5 seconds and said, "The switch is broken" and said he would replace the whole pump with a Hydromatic DA-1 (later Manager Joe said it was a BA 33) sump pump for $395. I asked how many HP it had, he said he didn't know. I asked about the warranty, he said he didn't know. He called his manager, Joe, who said the Hydromatic was only for temporary use and we needed a Storm Pro 1/3 HP for $460 (installed). If I got my own pump it would be $197 for them to install only, with no warranty. I said, but the pump itself is warrantied, and certainly you warranty your own work? He said yes, and vacillated. I mentioned that we had a high quality Zoeller pump in there now. I wouldn't pay the kid and said I'd talk to my husband. On the internet I learned that Zoeller is the best pump, but the switch often fails. I called Mr. Handy Dan and he picked up a $25 switch and installed it for $75. It has worked great for 4 months so far. Later I called RV Hallam to let them know everything that happened with the inexperienced plumber they sent, the wrong pump recommended, plus not even needing a new pump, and they were not interested in hearing it. They had done good work for us in the past, which is why I took the time to explain to them what happened, but it appears their service has slipped a bit and they are not concerned about it.

Called for estimate to replace bathroom faucet. Was immediately told they don't give phone estimates. Then asked for my zip code. When told, they said they were in Westfield? Not sure what is going on there.

They figured out best way to get the pipes in and out of the house. They put down something to protect my floors. And proceeded to cut out the pipes in the basement, and replace them. I didn't realize they would also take up the main floor toilet and replumb that too. And after they left, I discovered they also replaced a pipe to the pump that pumps out the water from the wash tub to the sewer (like a sump pump). That pump wasn't vented correctly when originally put in, and now it works better. The final price was about $700 less than I thought it was going to be.

Technician arrived promptly and was very courteous. I explained what I wanted done and he provided me a written estimate for each sink. I thought the price was a high and expressed that, but I needed the work completed anyway. He was here for approximately an hour which included the diagnosis and repair work. I do appreciate the work and professionalism, but I think $528 is excessive for what was done. I signed up for their maintenance program after they installed my sump pump a few months ago. You don't really save all that much and I regret spending the money for that. All and all, Metzler's is a good company. They are prompt, courteous and get the job done. I think they need to rethink their pricing structure. There are a lot of other plumbers out there that would do the work for much less.

Pleased with service and attention we received on Saturday morning of July 4th holiday weekend. Got a quick response to our phone message and someone was at our house later that morning. Plumber spent about an hour working on the problem. Good clean-up after his work. Although he spent time working on the problem, because he couldn't actually fix the blockage, he did not charge any amount for the visit.

Overall, the experience was good. I use them all the time and I really like them. They're always prompt, even if it's not an emergency. It's easy to schedule an appointment. They're good about calling me before the appointment, so I don't have to wait on them. The technicians have always been very nice and honest. I'm happy with their services.

I spoke to Jason Lee, the tech that came out, regarding the cause of the problem and couldn't give me an answer. I then asked him how he could quote such high prices with out knowing the cause and if what they are wanting to do would fix the issue. He stated that is how they do business. I asked if I could make my own notes on the service sheet they provide to their supervisor and he said no, not with out paying the amount for one of the options. I believe they were just trying to take advantage of an older woman. I did call and left a message with the customer service department at Mr. Plumber regarding my complaint, but I have yet to hear from them. My wife had a coupon to waive the service fee of $79, but he said that because we weren't having any work completed, we still owed the $79 and he wasn't going to leave until it was paid. This, of course, scared my wife. I eventually got him to leave my home.

Everything went great. There prices are very reasonable and they are reliable as well. They had to get an extra part and didn’t charge me for the time. I have used this company before and will use this company again.

Called them since they had done the original installation several years ago. This was normal wear and tear which my wife attempted to fix. She had the correct parts but in wrong. Hallam person came out and fixed using parts she had purchased and replaced both washer sets on hot (the problem one) and cold sides. Only charged for the service call. Very prompt for short notice (that morning), professional, courteous (even was impressed that my wife would attempt this repair), and job done right. 30 minutes tops for the work.

I was so glad that I called Hallam instead of the last plumber that I have used before. Will continue to call them when I need a plumber.

My faucet was spraying water. I had just signed up on Angie's list and based on the list, Metzler's Mr. Plumber was at the top of the list. I called the Mr. Plumber’s office to schedule an appointment and guestimate of costs. I asked for estimates for replacing washers and was told they wouldn’t give me an estimate. The plumber would have to come out to the house. The plumber (I have the plumber's name if needed) looked at the kitchen faucet and said this was old and he didn’t know even what the make/model was and we would need to replace the entire faucet. He immediately started up-selling to a new faucet and pushing a maintenance agreement. He then went out to the truck, and lucky for us, couldn’t find a new faucet even close to the existing we had. He told me he had no stock on his truck with faucets. Metzler's Mr. Plumber showed me prices. These prices started at $600.00. I told him his answer wasn't good enough and I needed a working sink and to try to fix the faucet since he is a plumber and to check the washers. He told me he probably didn’t have any o-rings on his truck to fit. I told him to look anyway that we weren’t replacing the faucet at that cost and we needed a working sink. He brought in a plastic compartmental box filled with different size o rings. Why he thought he wouldn’t be able to find o rings with what he had in stock is beyond me. He immediately found 2 o rings and replaced it and the faucet leak stopped. We turned the water on and there still was a leak from the sink sprayer. I asked if he would replace it and he said he didn’t have this on his truck either and this couldn’t be replaced that I would need a new faucet and I should pull the sprayer into the sink and let it sit there until I was able to purchase an entire faucet ( which he wrote and estimate). Again Metzler's Mr. Plumber pushed the maintenance agreement for plumbing and added the furnace and air conditioner to the estimate. The plumber went out to his truck to write up the bill at the end of the job. For two washers I was charged $222.00 then discounted to $143.00 ($79.00 with Angie’s coupon). Metzler's Mr. Plumber was in the house less than an hour. I called the supervisor the next morning about this bill. He agreed that if I paid for the service call $79.00 he would refund $64.00 but it would take at least two weeks to receive the refund since his boss was on vacation. After 2 weeks I hadn’t received the check. I called the office and I was told it would be sent in the next couple of days. I did received the check I spoke with a handy man and was told to go to Lowes for the sprayer head. I went to Lowes and purchased a sprayer head for the sink sprayer for around $6.00, followed the directions and replaced it myself. I would never use this company again. Unscrupulous!

They are very professional. They clearly explain the job before they start work on anything. They are pretty patient in trying to find all issues with leaks. The quality has been good so far. They are quite knowledgeable. They will be coming out again to do another job for me.
