+ -1 moreAgain, we feel that Metzler's Mr Plumber did good work, from the efficient and courteous office people to the expert and kind Steve the plumber! We will always ask for Steve in the future. Metzler's did NOT ask for any more money for the return visit -- that was a good move on their part, as the follow up visit we asked for really was to double-check the work done the week before. There was no visibility of the small problem that followed the big one; Steve's work done on Friday Jan 6th was excellent and worked. The fact that we got a return visit at no charge will make us very loyal customers, and we'll give personal referrals to our friends and neighbors as well as let Angie's List know by this second report.
Description of Work: This is an update to service performed by Steve at Metzler Mr. Plumber six days ago, on Jan 6th. '12. After a few days of keeping the cupboard under the kitchen sink cleared out, to allow complete drying of area after the Jan 6th water problem, there was still some tiny amount of water leaking somehow, occasionally creating another under-sink very shallow puddle or spot of water. Called Metzler Mr Plumber on Tuesday, Jan 10th, and asked if Steve could return to check it out .... his first opening was for Thursday, Jan 12,and we said we'd be happy to wait for him, as the amount of water was very small, and we could wipe it up with one paper towel. The customer service lady scheduled a visit, and said nothing about any additional charges. We actually got a call earlier than expected on Thursday monring, and Steve arrived at the time we said was best, about 45 minutes after the call. We all spent time together doing various connection, water flow, sink, & faucet experiments, and it was Steve who found that a special purified water spigot had barely loosened from its seating -- likely a result of the big pressure from the previous Friday's broken pipe connection. It only oozed a bit of water when being used, so there was no way any of us could have noticed it during the drama the previous Friday! .... Steve got it pushed back into place tightly, and we experimented and tested it again. No water seepage at all now! Steve pointed out that the old grouting behind the sink, done many years before, had naturally cracked with age. He let us know it could be re-done by Mr Plumber, if we'd ever like them to do so, but we elected to handle that ourselves.

+ -1 moreSteve and the other Metzler's Mr Plumber employees made a sudden (albeit not catastrophic), and sort-of-an-emergency home plumbing project an experience that started out to be a bit shocking and upsetting, but ended with success, The male receptionist, the two customer service women, and Steve -- the expert and very pleasant, sincere, and adept plumber -- made the day end very well indeed. Steve also gave me some contact numbers for a service that can help us clean out the water damage in the basement ... which was minimal (we don't have a finished basement), but we're going to have to get rid of some old toys, junk, stored Stuff down there, and get some bleaching treatment. I'll be checking for the best service company for that project on Angie's List!
Description of Work: We had a sudden break in a feeder line going from the pipes under the kitchen sink to the hot weater feed of the faucet. Hot water under great pressure just whooshed up from the basement water heater, under the sink, and spilling out all over the kitchen floor, which is hardwood, thus, a worrisome problem. Had to shut off valves in basement, then clean up a big water mess in the kitchen. I called Metzler's Mr Plumber, and they promised a visit same day. I found the two customer care ladies I spoke to very professional, pleasant, knowledgable, and excellent listeners. I spoke to two, as I had to talk to at least two plumbing contrractor companies to get at least two estimates od pricing, and find out about speed of service. They pledged that the $79 service call fee would apply to the entire work invoice if I okayed repairs after the plumber arrived and gave a work estimate. As Metzler's Mr Plumber reps promised, I got a call from the dispatcher approx 30 minutes prior to the arrival of the plumber. It was late afternoon, when rush hour was starting, so I was actually the one to tell the dispatcher, who reported where the plumber was, that I thought it would take over 30 minutes, and to tell the plumber not to worry about the trip being exactly 30 minutes. Steve arrived about 35 minutes later, which was absolutely fine, and was pleasant and genuine when we met him at the door -- actually, very gentlemanly. He put on booties, and came in to inspect the job. He did offer to fix both the broken hot water feed as well as the cold water feed (which had not been broken from the pressure) for a bit more, and he also offered a one-year warranty plan -- my thoughts and feelings were that he has been trained to do this, to offer both very complete and also directly related service, and the warranty plan. When I declined the cold water feed update, and the warranty plan, he immediately and cordially agreed -- no debates or argung, and so I ended up feeling that I had just been given reasonable options, and NOT a trumped up sales pitch. Steve fixed the piping and connection very quickly and thoroughly, showed me the finished job -- which was done perfectly, and I hadn't let on to him that I actually know quite a bit about these kinds of plumbing projects, having once done property management! Steve even went to the basement for a quick visit to check out that all the valves were returned to the correct positions. He filled out all paperwork -- the estimate, the bill -- very thoroughly and clearly, and discussed with me on how to minimize risks of floor buckling and other ripple effect problems that might arise.

+ 0 moreBeing the Saturday after Thanksgiving, I figured it may be a little difficult to locate a company that would come out so I looked specifically for a company that offered Saturday hours and were highly rated. The first company I called had a recording but it was also several minutes before their normal Saturday hours so I left a message. An hour went by so I called Metzler's. A live person answered, stated she would pass along my information, and I should expect a call back very soon. Within 15 minutes my phone rang and soon I was on the list for a drain specialist. She could not give me an exact time he would be out but stated I would receive a call in advance. The call came in at 12:30p and Jay (the drain specialist) arrived around 1:00p. Jay was courteous and listened to the description of the problem without interrupting. He went out to his truck, worked up the estimate, and came back in to explain the work that would be performed. I accepted the quote and Jay went to work. About 40 minutes later the drain was flowing better than it had flowed in years! my only complaint, and it's more of a suggestion than a complaint, is had we known the mess that the snaking would cause when it was pulled back out several times we would have removed everything in the bathroom under the sink, not just a two foot area for him to gain access to the drain. In 23 years of living in this house this is my first experience with a plumbing company and it was a very positive experience! I also purchased the drain cleaner even though I was a little skeptical but figured a little prevention may be helpful and save another trip. Later that afternoon I did a little research on the product and the reviews were very positive. Plus, Metzler's price was right in line with what everyone else was charging for it. Thanks to Angie's List for having a coupon that offset the service call!

+ -1 moreWe had a drain pipe to be repaired; Hallam sent a service tech to estimate the repair. The tech removed drywall to better see the problem and said it was a major problem that would take 2 men 8 hours to repair. The cost would be $2,000-3,000. I asked the tech to confirm his conclusions with the owner and call me the next day. I contacted 3 other Angie List "A" rated contractors and described the needed repair. The estimates ranged from $350-750 and I was assured the repair would take no more than 4 man hours. The Hallam tech called me the next morning to confirm he had talked with the owner and the repair would cost $1,785-2,785. I told him I would pass. I understand some price variance but this was way beyond reasonable. Hallam was at my house so they certainly were able to assess the problem and yet they stood by their very high price. The contractor who made the repair listened as I explained the problem on the phone; gave me the estimate and came that day to repair the pipe. I was extremely disappointed with the Hallam tech; the careless manner he removed the drywall and the obvious lack of professionalism in the approach to the problem. Hallam is certainly off my Angie's list.
Description of Work: I contacted Hallam because many years ago we had used its services and were very satisfied. We had a drain pipe to be repaired. The service tech came to our home and after carelessly removing drywall, declared we had a major problem that would cost between $2,000-3,000 to repair. I suggested it sounded very high and perhaps the tech could seek the advice of the company owner. No services were performed.

+ -1 moreI was contacted by Tina Festa, Williams/Metzler's customer assurance person. She respectfully listened to my concerns and addressed them in a satisfactory manner. Thank you Tina. ------------- We have had a string of unsatisfactory experiences with Williams Comfort Air. The water utility company wanted us to fix the pipes connected to the water meter. The William Comfort Air's representative's emphatic response was that we should spend $7K or so to replace our pipes. He was not as forthcoming as I would've liked as to more modest alternatives. We ended up paying Hope plumbing $400 to install a cradle for the meter and this has been working just fine. On one repair call, we purchased some sort of bio-cleanser for our pipes a from a Williams Comfort Air representative for like $40+ on the representation that it would implant creatures who would essentially live in our pipes eating the gunk. Afterwards I spoke to Purdue extension and they said that these entities would mostly be expelled each time we flushed. So in that case, I feel I purchased a product from the company on the basis of a misrepresentation. I have requested a refund and am awaiting a reply. All-in-all, I'm starting to feel that this company generates a non-trivial amount of business by generating fear, often unwarranted or disproportionate to the risk, of worst-case scenarios.. After the last repair, I purchased an inspection agreement b/c, as far as I can tell, puts us in the position of paying Williams Comfort Air of envisioning more worst-case and possibly improbable scenarios that would frighten us into buying more products -- -- kind of like the alarmist diagnostics one gets at some very slick oil change places.

+ -1 moreThe plumber from R.V. Hallam, Craig, arrived right at the time designated. He did have some difficulty removing the old faucet which reinforced my decision to call for a plumber rather than do it myself. He had to cut the old faucet out from underneath the sink with a special cutting tool. He was then able to install the new faucet with no difficulties. He also suggested that we try some white vinegar to remove some of the rust stains. We didn't have any on hand, but we did get some later and he was right. They took the stains away with really very little work. The installation work looks great and I am completely satisfied with the quality of work. No leaks! Craig did an inspection of the household plumbing which came as part of the Big Deal. He pointed out some possible future concerns but we both agreed that they did not need immediate attention.
Description of Work: This was an Angies List Big Deal which worked out very nicely for us. I had purchased a new faucet for our kitchen sink and when I went to look at what it would take to install, I decided it was time for a plumber. Much to my surprise and gratefulness, an Angie's Big Deal came at the right time for a plumbing job.

Paul, who was the plumber who came to my home, was professional in manner and attire. Since I hope to upgrade my bathroom and kitchen in the future he was very informative of options and services the company could provide.
Description of Work: I contacted the company because my washing machine drain was backing up. Paul, from RV Hallam Plumbing, contacted me the morning of the appointment to ask specific questions about the problem to insure he would have the equipment he might need with him and that he was on his way. He arrived within the scheduled appointment time and immediately began checking to determine the exact problem causing the drain to back up. He located a clog in the exit pipe by using a camera and advised me what he would need to do to clear it and the cost. He brought in the equipment and cleared the drain.

+ 1 moreI live in an older Broad Ripple home and was a little nervous as to why my basement drain was backing up while doing laundry. This just started to make the draining water from the washing machine back up and start leaking. Travis came out (put shoe covers on) and went downstairs to survey the problem. We filled the washer with water, recreated the leak, then tested what happened when we flushed a toilet. This isolated the problem to the basement drain and not the larger main. Travis then was very careful bringing the equipment in and was mindful of our dog. He snaked the drain which eliminated the water backing up through the hole in the floor. The water was still spilling out of the back of the washer so we put a level on the PVC pipes that run into the drain. It turns out that the pipe was moved and wasn't maintaining a proper decline to allow proper drainage. I like to do things around the house myself so I asked a lot of questions about turning that project into a DIY. Travis was very helpful with this as well. The only thing I wish was more clear was that I didn't qualify for the $93 deal because the drain that was cleared was not the main drain to the sewer. Other than that, the price I ended up getting was very consistent with what other plumbing companies quoted over the phone. Nobody likes dealing with issues like this but I feel comfortable calling this company back to help should more situations arise.
Description of Work: Cleared a partially clogged secondary line to the main sewer line. Gave advice on how to fix another plumbing related problem.

+ -1 moreWe had a great experience with Metzler's overall — although one snag worth mentioning (below). We had known for a few years that we were going to have to replace our sewer pipe, as we live in an old house (1928) and a sizable portion of our pipe had slowly been destroyed by invading tree roots. For the past few springs we would have some minor flooding in our basement whenever there was a heavy rain. This April, right before we were due to go on vacation, our basement flooded worse than it ever had before and we knew the time had come to address the problem. We got someone else to take care of the flooded basement as we started reading reports to figure out who should come quote the sewer pipe replacement job. That's when I saw that Metzler's did "no dig" sewer pipe replacement. We were the poster child for this kind of job. We had other contractors tell us they would have to dig up the deck, under the yard, a portion of our detached garage and our brand new patio using conventional sewer replacement methods. Yes, their prices were a little cheaper (we had a quote as low as $5,000) but we would have ended up paying more in the long run trying to repair all the displaced and ruined hardscaping. Metzler's crew did an excellent job with everything (special kudos to Chris and Chad) and the only snag we hit was when the sales rep called us to tell us that there were going to be problems hooking into the city's sewer main since the main itself was in such bad shape. We got a call mid-project from the sales rep saying they were going to have to charge $3K in addition to what we were already paying and we were also going to have to remove an old tree that was in the way. Well, when he had quoted the job, he told us it would be only $500 extra if there were any issues connecting to the main and he put that in writing into the contract. We told him we weren't paying a cent more and he better honor the contract he had presented to us. After a bit of back and forth, that's what they did — although we did have to pay an additional $600 to take care of the tree. We've been very happy with the work and there's been no additional problems so far, although the true test will come with the heavy spring rains. We'll report back if we have any issues, but I suspect that won't be the case.
Description of Work: Metzler replaced our old sewer pipe with a new one, using trenchless technology. They also installed a new sump pump.

+ 0 moreMy water heater failed and it was just 6 years old and this was the second time Hallam's had to service it. Previously the heating element went bad. Though the heater was covered under the warranty I had purchased, I still had to pay for the service call to stop the leaking and a second service call for installation of a new one. As well as the new water heater, I also needed a new expansion tank which added a few hundred dollars more to the cost. On top of this, the catch basin installed under the water heater failed and allowed water to flood my basement. This is the second time the catch basin failed to work due to improper installation. The installer was nice and knowledgeable and quickly stopped the leak. Due to this happening on a Friday night we waited until Monday for him to return with the new water heater to install. Overall, the work done was fine and we now have a new water heater. However, the cost was higher than I anticpated.
Description of Work: Remove and replace a leaking water heater and expansion tank.

Description of Work: I backed up the kitchen sink from potato peels in the disposal :( this is the second time this has happened and we used Hallam the 1st time (about 5 years ago) Craig calls before he gets to my home. Is very professional, easy to talk to and knowledgeable He had to 'snake' the drain from the basement to clear the clog, recommended some enzyme (which is helping) to prevent this from happening again (we have OLD pipes) and even helped me with a small leak under the sink (it was threaded badly)

+ -1 moreAs far as the response time and the professionalism of the company, it was okay. As far as the service, it was not good. I contacted the company and all the lady said was that she was sorry that they could not get the tub opened. After talking to her for a few minutes, she told me she would escalate it to someone higher up in the company. As of yet, I have not heard from anyone.
Description of Work: Bathtub would not drain. The serviceman cabled bathtub but did not get it opened. After working with it for less than an hour, he contacted his boss because he couldn't get it open. Another gentleman came out the following business day and gave me a Summary of Findings Report. This was an estimate of two different ways of correcting the problem. Both options were over $2000.00. I thought about it and decided to get another company to come out and give me their opinion. That company was here for thirty to thirty-five minutes and had the drain open. They saved me a lot of money that I would have spent unnecessarily.

+ -1 moreHe came out and did give the estimate. He was clear it was only an estimate and then mentioned that he could do the work, but he didn't "want to". He said it would take a couple of hours. I'm fine with needing to reschedule due to a time conflict or scheduling issue, but to simply say he didn't want to do the work that day seemed very unprofessional. He gave no further explaination of why he couldn't do the work. The estimate he gave seemed high. We ended up having another company out. They did the work and replaced the hose bib (same one that was quoted by Hallam) for $100 less and did it on the same day they did the estimate. Sorry to say, but we won't be using Hallam again.
