+ -1 moreI am remodeling the kids bathroom and needed a new tub & shower valve installed. I already had the tub and valve and the walls were open to the studs. Hallam came over to quote the job and much to my dismay estimated the job at $1800 and four hours each for two men. After declining their quote I called a friend and we set the tub ourselves in 30 minutes. Hallam called later asking what I thought was a fair price. I said less than half what they quoted and they offered to do it for $800. I declined again and called Mister Quik. They came out and quoted $230 to replace the valve and drain. They were finished in less than an hour. I had been using Hallam for 15 years and they were most recently out in January to replace my water softener. I always had great service at a fair price. Unfortunately they tried to take advantage of me. I don't mind paying a fair price but $1800 for what ended up being two hours work is ridiculous. They have lost a long time customer.
Description of Work: Install customer supplied bath tub set in mortar & shower valve. New tub waste & overflow.

+ -1 moreMy husband started to install a new high-end kitchen faucet & when he got to the connecting the lines part, he discovered a previous plumber had put non-standard size adapters on the kitchen lines. The two parts wouldn't connect together. This was out of his realm so he started contacting plumbers (and it was a Saturday). This was the only plumber we contacted that wasn't going to charge extra for coming out on the weekend. When they arrived, the plumber was very professional and personable. He was able to make the repairs in a timely manner and also sold us the annual maintenance agreement which would save us money for having them back out at a later date to install bathroom faucets & schedule a free whole house plumbing inspection and waterheater tank drain (which we hadn't done in 8+ years). Overall we were very satisfied with plumbing repair and persom who came out to the house.
Description of Work: Replaced kitchen sink faucet lines that had the wrong size adapter on them.

They do not give you ANY idea of cost and say they need to have someone come out to quote it but they charge a $79 service charge that is only waived if you have the services performed. Well I would need to have some sort of idea on cost before I have someone come out. There are plenty of great plumbers out there like Bedell Plumbing that will actually speak to you on the phone and give you an estimated quote on the issues you describe to them. Don't go with Hallam.

Description of Work: Metzler's Mr. Plumber fixed a plumbing problem. They put a roto-rooter in my sewer line and ran it from the sewer to my house. That still did not unplug the problem so they came inside, took my toilet up, and ran it through there. That cleared it out.

He replaced the supply line and also a few other parts in the toilet that were on their last legs. Cleaned up and was professional. A good experience.

Two other plumbers told us that the symptom (toilet not flushing properly) was due to a clog and they used snakes -which turned out to be only temporary fixes. Metzler said at the start that he didn't think that was the issue and he used a camera to investigate. It took a while but he explained everything as they went along. The system appears to be working properly.
Description of Work: We had a complicated plumbing issue due to shifting of some ground under our home. This resulted in a disconnect between pipes going from our house to our septic system. Two other plumbing contractors failed to identify the problem correctly and therefore to resolve it. Metzler arrived with a camera and was able to determine the nature of the problem and the approximate location of the disconnects. They had to dig up the lines; re-establish angle on 1 set of pipes and re-connect another pipe. This involved time and extensive digging in our yard. Happily, Metzler's was able to solve and resolve the problem to our relief. System works fine now.

Repaired but let me know that the workings inside were old and may need replacement in near future. Left estimate. Only charged for service call.

+ 1 morePaid over $5000 to pay for to dig up our yard. Then they sent a second person out, and raised the price. They dug out the piping in the yard. Then they went up to $25,000. They wanted to dig up our yard to put in a sewer line. They stated they didn?t guarantee the work. They told me to call in the spring to take care of our yard. When I called to send someone out, they never returned my call. When I called again, they said they sent someone out and we refused the service, which never happened. When I called again, they said they were too busy to come out right now, and didn?t know when they could come out. I spoke again with them last night, and they stated they spoke with the contractor, and they couldn?t fix it, and it would cost$ 700 to fill in the dirt and the gravel. I spoke and to them this morning , and they stated that they had already sent their info to the BBB.
Description of Work: They originally came out for an overflowing toilet.

+ 0 moreIt went very well. They had difficulty digging the hole in the basement. We have an 80 year old house and the concrete was 18" deep. They even stayed until 11:00 P.M. to be sure to get us back on the sewer.

+ -1 moreMetzler's Mr Plumber will do a full house plumbing inspection annually. Brandon Johnson has worked at our home in the past and we asked for him to return. He went through the entire house, checking all the plumbing and flushing the hot water heater. He went into the crawl space to check there as well. We needed several water shutoff valves replaced as they were not closing properly given they were 24 years old I also asked about any solutions to having to wait a long time for hot water to arrive at our master bath in the far corner of the house. He showed us a solution that we liked so he installed that for us as well. Works great and now hot water is available whenever we need it. I also mentioned a major nuisance of noise when the sump pump cut off. He investigated and recommended replacing the check valve which was a cheap part. This solved the problem. We will have Brandon come out each year and keep our plumbing in great shape!
Description of Work: Did a complete plumbing maintenance inspection. Replaced multiple shutoff valves around house. Installed Grundfos Comfort Series circulation pump and crossover valve to reduce hot water response time at far end of house. Replaced sump pump check valve with a spring loaded valve to reduce back siphon noise.

Were concerned that it might become worse.Appointment was made within 24 hours Serviceman did thorough assessment of situation, found no obvious reason for leak, and could not recreate the leak. He then replaced the wax seal at base of toilet. No further leaks in about a month. There was no charge for the service since it was still within the warranty period when the toilet had previously been repaired.

One thing that troubles me is that they left me with a list of 10 optional things I could have done and I think it is an opportunity for them to garner more business. The list just went on and on and I am not sure if any of this was absolutely necessary or not. But, it is fine and I will use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Metzler's Mr. Plumber to flush and clean my water heater. This has to be done to keep my water heater warranty up. They also checked faucets, and sinks and toilets.

+ 0 moreI would get a service contract. It has certainly paid for itself in the last 2 years. When you make an appointment be sure to tell them if your time is not flexible. Twice they have left a message the day before and told me my appointment was for a different time, like changing from 8am to 2pm. I wasn't very happy as I had planned my day around the original appointment. I learned to tell them that I couldn't move to a different time when I called to make the appointment, they have respected that.
Description of Work: I have a service contract and they come out once a year to inspect our plumbing and let us know what needs watching or needs attention. The service contract is around $175 I think. We have used them for about 2 years. They have had to replace our sump pump twice...the 1st one was defective, they replaced it with another one (different brand) at no additional charge. They replaced our back-up sump pump also. This went out during heavy rains. They responded quickly, gave a detailed estimate and replaced it. It was over $2000 which seemed high to me. You get a discount on parts if you have a service contract and you are higher on the list if you have an urgent issue. We had multiple issues with both sump pumps (the old ones) and they always responded promply.
