We have had an annual service contract for our Heat & AC for several years (the last 6 I think). We were always happy with their service This year we never received a contract. They called this summer saying they had not received a reply to their letter with service contact. I returned their call and asked them to mail a contract as I wanted to continue to have annual service. Several months later and I have never heard back from them.

Appel came to my house to repair an airconditining unit. The unit was apparently low on Freon. The technician was very reponsive, arriving shortly after I called on a Saturday morning. He cleaned the outdoor unit, defrosted the inside and outside units, added freon and gave me recommendations to extend the life of my current system. I was so pleased, I signed up with Appel to regularly service the system.

The AC condenser fan was failing. You could hear the bearings howl. I called Appel for a repair request and less than 24 hours later the repairman (very nice guy) arrived he quickly diagnosed the condenser fan issue. The cost to replace the fan was going to be over $500...and the unit was almost 20 years old. The repairman asked if we wanted to fix the 20 year old unit or if we wanted to consider replacing the unit. I opted for a quote to replace the unit...and the repairman did not charge me for the service call. Scott came out a couple of days later to look at the situation and give me a quote on a Rheem Prestige 3.5 ton, 14 SEER unit. It was an older unit that he had in his warehouse and he gave me what I thought was a pretty good deal. Two days later the unit was installed by two repairmen who were very helpful, courteous and dog friendly. They were in the attic and the crawl space, but never tracked anything into the house...and they were in and out quite a bit. Installation seemed to go very well. Five or six hours after their arrival we had our new AC up and operating. Since then, the weather has turned very hot, and the unit has held up its end of the bargain. Our old AC unit had trouble keeping the house cool when it hit the upper eighties...and this new unit has kept up just fine. In the next couple of weeks, Appel said that they will return to make sure that we are satisfied with the work and the AC unit. They did a great job with the installation and I'm sure that they will follow up. I will definitely call them again if I have any problems with my HVAC system.

If I ever call them with a problem, they will send someone quickly. They send reminders to schedule the regular maintenance service. We also bought our furnace through them. The man gave us a lot of options. That was a very smooth and easy process. I really like their availability and mostly the maintenance program they offer.

He was very helpful. He wrote down where he found the leaks for me so I could report back to the original service provider that installed the AC unit and fernace. He was very nice and very professional. He was very honest about trying to get the original service provider that installed the units to fix the leaks verses charging me to fix them.
Description of Work: They came out and replaced 5 pounds freon and checked for leaks. He did not charge me for checking the leaks, only the service charge and the freon.

I have used Appel before to install a furnance/AC in a previous home, so I trusted them and knew they would do a good job. Our AC quit working on a Thursday evening. Appel was out to our home by 10:30 am the next day and diagnosed that our compressor had locked up and was tripping the circuit. The cost to replace the compressor was prohibitive...so we decided to buy a new more efficient unit. Nate came out the same day (a Friday) gave us a quote and the unit was installed on Tuesday the following week (thank goodness it was a cool weekend!). I think the price was a little high but it was in the ball park where I thought it would be and in comparison to other verbal quotes I got. But, I knew the job would be done right. They arrived on schedule. Did the work quickly and courteously...even with me asking the installers a bunch of questions. The installation was precise and neat (no duct tape). And they cleaned up and left the house in better shape than when they arrived. I would definitely use them again.

The A/C was tripping the breaker for the entire house's electrical system. I had called them at 8 a.m. in the morning and the repairment arrived around 10:30 a.m. No other contractor that I called was able to provide service so quickly. It took a while for the repairmen to locate the problem but he eventually located a short in the conduit between the A/C unit and the house. Despite the difficult in locating the problem, the repairmen was persistent, made sure that the problem was resolved, and was extremely courteous.

I had an A/C inspection by another contractor and he discovered that the A/C was devoid of Freon. The system was 14 years old and it made sense to replace it rather than repair it. At my request, he gave an estimate of $7400 for replacement of the entire heating and A/C system. I called Appel for a second estimate. Nate gave me an estimate for two brands. I chose a 95% efficient furnace with a 14 SEER A/C with a ten year warranty. The system is made by Tappan in the USA. They installed it in one 9 hour day. So far it is working flawlessly. I give them the highest rating since they did such good work, were careful to answer all my questions and followed through with their promised install date. I recommend Appel and will use them for maintenance checks in the future.

Heard a funny noise this morning coming from the outdoor air conditioning unit. Unit made noise like it was on, but the fan was not moving. We have a service contract with Appel - they come out twice a year to maintain our heating / AC systems. I called this morning at 8:30 and they had someone out by 11:00AM. The technician (Rob) tested the unit, indicated we needed to replace the fan motor on our 8 year old Trane unit. He had the part on the truck and replaced the defective part within an hour. Could not have asked for better service. So far our experience with Appel has been flawless.

A/C unit didn't work when we turned it on for the summer. Appel was quick to respond and provided an estimate on obtaining a new unit. Old unit was over 17 years old so we weren't interested in a quote for fixing the existing unit. New unit was installed the next week. Very professional with technicians explaining what they were doing and answering all my questions. Price was not rated as we didn't obtain multiple quotes. Installers were on time and completed the work as estimated at the price agreed upon.

Extremely well. The technician went through his diagnosis in an efficient manner and found the problem with the unit. (I had another company come look earlier and they were there for over 3 hours and decided I needed new equipment). The problem was repaired and the technician explained to me what he was doing and what can cause that part to go bad. We've got cold air now and also signed up for a service plan based on the good service.

Very pleased as based on their helpfulness I did not have to replace the furnace and AC and only a few hoses. They will be my new maintenance and go to company.
Description of Work: My usual HVAC company (not Appel) recommended I needed to replace my 10 year old furnace after it stopped heating on a cold day. Although I had them do an emergency fix, I started calling various companies for replacement quotes. Appel is the only one who suggested and offered a free second opinion (they came out that same afternoon) and stated I only needed a few hoses replaced. All else was absolutely fine.

There were no problems other than that it took awhile to get everything done, but that was unavoidable and not due to any negligence. Luckily it was not that cold that night and three small space heaters actually kept the house very warm until a new furnace could be installed. If I have any complaints, and it is only a small one, it is that we were told another person from Appel would be out in about a week to inspect the work and to pick their yard sign up. After two months, no one has been back yet, though I put the sign in our garage long ago. But the furnace has been working fine and we are happy with it.
Description of Work: After another company had hurt our furnace even more while tuning it up, at the recommendation of a friend, we called Appel. A technician arrived as promised and inspected the furnace. We were given several options, but given the age of the furnace and the cost of just repairing it and the likelihood that something else would go wrong since it was really on its last legs, we decided to go with a new furnace. The next day a different technician installed the furnace, which took most of the day.

My experience with the company was a complete failure. I'm a tenant and, unfortunately, it was a landlord who selected HVAC maintenance operator. They've had past experience with Appel, may be positive, but my experience was not positive at all. First, in summer 2012 air conditioner broke. It was a hot summer and I have a kid who was 2,5 years old at that time. Appel was invited for urgent repair. They refilled the system with freon and said there could be a leak in the system. Two weeks later the system broke again and the landlord invited Appel again to quote a replacement. They didn't show up. At all. Because of this my family had to spend 2 more nights in the basement - the only way to escape from heat. Afterwards, the landlord decided to use another company and they installed AC unit quickly. But "thanks" to Appel for making my life a nightmare in summer. Recently, in March 2013, furnace was running bad. I have to say that I ordered a preventive maintenance for the furnace (cleaning, tune up), but not from Appel. The company that performed maintenance said that furnace motor has to be replaced as shafts were out of balance and eventually damaged the motor. So the landlord called for Appel, because the unit was still under warranty. They came two times to check the motor. I have no clue why the first guy showed up, because he was not a technician, and he couldn't decide what was wrong with the motor. When Appel's tech came, he replaced the motor fairly quickly and performed a maintenance once again. At least he said he did. So why I'm telling this is because I was expecting to have a newborn baby in a couple of days back from the hospital and tried to ensure that all systems were running smoothly, because the last thing I wanted was to let furnace break when the baby is at home. Guess what? About 2 weeks later the system broke... In the middle of the night the temperature started dropping to mid 60s, then lower... I called for emergency Appel services, where they promise technician to call and sow up within 1 hour. 1 hour later - no information from Appel, I called them second time. 20 minutes later - no call, I called to Appel for the third time as the temperature continued to drop. In the same time I called to another company to back up "brilliant Appel's service". 1,5 hours later their technician called me back and told me that he will be in 1 hour! When he showed up 2,5 hours after I called Appel, I didn't allow him to touch the equipment, because of strong smell of last evening alcohol from him. He also seemed not to control his movements very well (he dropped my card and couldn't pick it for 30 seconds, until I helped him). After the issue was fixed, my only question to Appel was: What kind of "maintenance" they performed that the system broke in 2 weeks? My advise: never reply on this company's "emergency" service. Unreliable and incompetent. PS: Appel charged me $134 for "late cancellation". Pathetic...
Description of Work: There were 2 tries from Appel: 1. In summer 2012 they were asked to repair broken air conditioner. 2. In February and March 2013 they were dealing with furnace.

Response from Appel Heating & Air Conditioning
This letter is in response to a report filed from a tenant, unhappy that we asked for payment for a service call fee for driving to his home in the middle of the night. We were turned away from the home without making a repair as another company had arrived a few minutes before us. To truly appreciate our reputation one only needs to look at our 1000+ “A” ratings and 14 years of Super Service Awards. Here is a chronological list of events and how the calls unfolded: On August 3, 2011 Appel came to this home to service the air conditioner. We cleaned the unit and added refrigerant. Specifically, we found a leaking indoor cooling coil, quoted a new coil and warned the tenant that the refrigerant would leak back out if the coil was not replaced. The tenant understood the situation and signed off on the invoice and our form regarding refrigerant leaks. Unfortunately Appel was not contacted for the replacement of the indoor coil or for a quote on the replacement of the entire cooling system. During the first weekend of February this year the tenant’s furnace failed and he had another company out to diagnose a failed motor and wheel. According to the landlord, the other company said this repair would be $2700 and suggested it would be less money to replace the furnace. Any reputable contactor knows a four year old furnace is still under a parts warranty. In essence the other company was suggesting a labor only repair (for perhaps two hours of service) would cost $2700. The landlord called our office on Sunday February 3rd requesting a quote on a new furnace since this is what the other company had suggested. Our salesman (not a technician, our technicians do not sell) went to the home immediately on Sunday, recognized the home since he had sold the furnace and let the owner know of the parts warranty and labor warranty on the unit. Our technician was out later that day to replace the motor and wheel at NO CHARGE! On February 6th we returned to the home to perform maintenance on the furnace. The unit had not been cleaned since it had been installed four years prior and our repair technician had pointed this out when he was there to do the repair. Upon completion the furnace was in tip top shape with a brand new motor and wheel. On March 22nd at 1:22 AM our on call technician was paged for a “no heat” service. Unfortunately our technician did not hear the first page and regrettably the tenant did have to call a second time. Our technician responded to the second page and immediately called the tenant at 2:40 AM and said he would head out right away. Our technician called again from the road to confirm the address. At no point throughout these series of conversations did the tenant mention that he had called multiple service providers out to respond to his “no heat” situation. Our service tech arrived at the home only to find that another provider was already in the home working on the furnace. Per company policy our technician asked for payment for our trip charge. Had the tenant cancelled the call or communicated with us honestly about calling multiple service providers out we would not have been put into such a position and we clearly made the effort to get to the home and take care of the “no heat” situation. Perhaps the worst and most unjust aspect of this situation is the tenant’s accusation that our service technician smelled of alcohol upon arrival to the home. Our technicians are all screened for drug and alcohol use when they are hired. Random drug and alcohol testing occurs throughout the year to insure that all of our technicians are clean and sober. We only want the best people representing our business. Specifically in this case, the on-call technician CANNOT consume alcohol due to the prescription medications he is on for a health condition. The interaction between the prescription medications and alcohol could be fatal. Again, the tenant’s accusation is ludicrous and blasphemous and absolutely false. In closing, Appel is a company who cares about each and every customer we come into contact with. We have provided exceptional service in this case to both the landlord and the tenant. We saved the landlord from another service provider who was not honest or forthright about a service situation and we attempted to help the tenant immediately whenever we were called. The landlord continues to keep a maintenance agreement with Appel and has always been pleased with our service.

Thorough and did not charge for the simple fix for the humidifier flow valve (closed then re-opened). They did not suggest any unnecessary repairs nor did they offer us a "service contract". We would use them in the future and recommend them to anyone. I'd rather pay a little more for an inspection and feel confident everything is in working order, than to pay a little less for an inspection and have them suggest a service contract or a couple hundred dollar repair.
Description of Work: Serviceman did a 27-point inspection of the furnace & reset the flow on our whole house humidifier. I am a little fuzzy on the price we paid, but what I put should be in the ballpark.

Appel offers a maintenance plan to their customers which offers on-site inspection each Fall and again in the Spring. The inspection covers a multiple-point check list; recommendations, if needed, are made after each inspection. The plan works well for us and leaves us with a sense of confidence that the air won't quit in the summer or the heat in the winter...one hopes.
