We had an excellent experience it this company. They had to come when it was really, really hot! They were very courteous, wore boots on their shoes to keep from tracking things in from the basement. We are extremely happy with their work, and they were by far the least expensive. I have had questions since the work was done, and I always got a quick reply from Nathan! I would recommend them to anybody! On December 24th, our furnace went out. The provider was out within 25 minutes. He didn't charge us anything and diagnosed the problem. It was outstanding service.

I am so glad I called Appel--they solved my problem completely! The dealer that originally sold the unit to me (not Appel) had done everything they knew to figure out the problem, including getting assistance from the manufacturer. The dealer had come out on at least 8 occasions and had even replaced the unit. They did not know what else to do. So I called Appel for another opinion. Nathan came out to offer his perspective regarding the problem. It did not take him more than about three minutes to say "I know what the problem is". He proceeded to explain that there were too many 90 degree bends in the ductwork. The excessive bends greatly reduced the efficiency of the unit. He suggested a different placement for the unit to eliminate the excessive bends. He did not charge for this service and was even gracious enough to spend additional time on the phone with me regarding some details. I notified the original dealer of Nathan's assessment and recommendations and he was only too happy to move the unit and modify the ductwork as recommended. That solved the problem completely! I am very appreciative to Nathan for his knowledge and gracious helpfulness. A less ethical person could have easily gotten me to buy a new unit but Nathan asserted that the unit should be able to perform well with his recommended changes. And he was right! I would heartily recommend Nathan and Appel for any work that requires conscientious, ethical people that will do high quality work. Thank you Nathan! Sorry for the delay in reporting this to Angie's List..
Description of Work: This is a long-overdue review of an outstanding and helpful service provided by Nathan Evans from Appel Heating and Air Conditioning that was provided over a year ago. Appel is great. The owner came out to give us the estimate. Install was timely and workers were professional. The owner even comes back out 3 wks after install to do a quality check. Impressive. Their quote was substantially less than other quotes and quote was much more thorough. Scott took the time to educate us on exactly what we need and why and didn't try to over sell us!!

I obtained quotes from five vendors and narrowed them down to three. Of these, I requested more detailed information and specs; i.e., furnace efficiency (80% vs 95%), a/c unit size, etc. Over a 3 week period, I meet several times with Scott Appel and John, his maintenance supervisor. Because of my already low utility bills, they convinced me I did not need a more expensive 95% furnace or a higher tonnage a/c unit. They answered all of my detailed questions and were very professional in the process. The installers were also professional and kept me informed of their process. It took them only about 2/3 of the day to do the job and clean up all debris. I will highly recommend Appel Heating & Air Conditioning to my family and friends.

The maintenance went fine and the technician was very friendly and professional. Appel offers very competitive prices on their maintenance plans especially if you take advantage of the off-season discounts. This was their second maintenance visit. Last year I also had them install a whole house humidifier that I purchased online. Their installation charge was a fraction of what Williams Comfort quoted and they provided fantastic service, even sending someone out to answer my questions when I thought something was wrong with my system. They could have charged me for the service call but didn't which is fantastic.

Our 10-year-old air conditioner stopped working on Sunday night. I called out another company to diagnose the issue the following morning. That company presented a scenario of costly repairs of the fan motor, fan blade, capacitor and contactor ($1,600) but they were really pushing for replacement of the unit. I was also told by the technician that our old system would be obsolete and unserviceable after December because of EPA regulations on R-22. With this in mind, we made an appointment to have one of their sales people come out later in the day to present the options for a new unit. I called Appel for a second opinion because I had heard good things about them from friends. I talked with Deborah and she asked me some questions about our air conditioner and informed me that I was given misinformation about the R-22 regulations and that it would still be available for servicing existing units until 2020. She also referred me to the EPA website where I could get additional information. She also provided pricing for the repairs that had been suggested by the other company and Appel was more reasonable. I could already tell that Appel's approach to doing business was different and more service-oriented that the other company so I asked if they could come out that day to take a look at the unit. Their technician Jay arrived and was extremely personable, helpful and knowledgeable. He inspected the air conditioner and said he thought that replacing the capacitor would fix the problem and that it may not be necessary to replace the fan motor. I agreed to give that a try and for $209 (including the service call fee), my air conditioner is running great again. Appel is the kind of company I like to do business with...honest, upfront and service-oriented. I plan to use them for all of my HVAC needs going forward because they are more interested in the customer relationship than the bottom line. As a result, they will be top of mind when it comes time for me to replace my system. I'm recommending them to everyone I know.

The sales presentation and the installation were both done in a very professional manner. The install crew arrived at the appointed time and completed the job in a timely manner. The work area was left in immaculate condition. As a follow up, the owner Scott Appel came by a week after the installation to inspect the work and to see if I had any questions about the equipment. I couldn't be more pleased with the entire experience.

I had another company out when my AC stopped working. After replacing some wires, this other company thought the problem was a fault condenser which was under warranty and said it would only cost $1400 in labor. This sounded outrageous so I called Appel. The Appel technician was able to get to me the same day, which made me very happy. After checking everything out, he determined the other company had improperly installed some wires. He fixed the problem, then checked everything to ensure it was working. The cost from Appel was only $84. THANK YOU APPEL FOR SAVING ME MORE THAN $1300!

We called Appel based upon their rating in Angie's list. They came to our home and inspected our upstairs air conditioner. They advised that there was a leak someplace, and the air conditioner was almost 22 years old, so we needed a new one. We obtained bids on the new unit from several different companies, and we went with Appel. We were never advised that the fee for the "check out" of $84.00 would not be waived IF we replaced the air conditioner with Appel. We agreed to put in a new unit with them. They ordered another Trane unit, and a week later came to install it. They took the old one away, dismantled and installed the new one, then tried to turn on the new air conditioner. It would not work. The two technicians then started troubleshooting in depth (as the FIRST technicians who came out SHOULD have done). They found an MAJOR leak in the line, and advised that it was probably a roofing nail that had punctured the air-conditioning line. We advised we had indeed had a new roof put on our house by Rick Kilburn Roofing last fall, and we felt we should call him to discuss. They did not turn on the air conditioner at that time. Kilburn Roofing came out, with his own choice of an air conditioning expert, who found the leak, repaired it, and promised to fix our drywall. They were very professional and found the roofing nail in the air conditioning line. They stood behind their work. IF the original leak had been determined properly during the first inspection, and not just brushed over as Appel's first technicians did, we might not have needed a new air conditioner. We are not naive as to the age of our unit. Most do not last that long. BUT our downstairs air conditioner is also 22 years old and working perfectly. Both units have had proper service during their lifetime, and in fact, the upstairs unit had been partially rebuilt three years ago. Now we called Appel back. We felt like they should do something. Anything! We even asked if they had our old unit to put back in since the line had been fixed. They did not, it had been taken apart apparently to be used for parts. We were "stuck" with a new 2900.00 air conditioner, and Scott Appel's only response was we were lucky to have gotten 22 years out of it. He told us he quoted a good price in the first place due to the competition. We felt we were the ones stuck with a 2900.00 bill, granted we do have a new Trane air conditioner in our upstairs, (that we might not have needed). And we do understand that our old unit was 22 years old. BUT, we felt like we didn't get outstanding service. Then we got the $84.00 bill from the original diagnostic visit, which clearly did not diagnose the complete problem. We called Appel and asked if they would waive even that fee considering what we went through. They flatly refused. We will pay the $84.00 fee, and we have already paid the $2900.00 air conditioner bill. We will tell every person we know about our experience with Appel. We do not feel like were given fair treatment considering their inadequate diagnose of the original problem. They did tell us their could be a leak, but they clearly did not diagnose the cause or the enormity of the leak, which was obvious to the second set of technicians when they tried to turn on the new air conditioner. We are NOT happy with their service.

Response from Appel Heating & Air Conditioning
On May 8, 2014, Appel Heating & Air Conditioning sent a service technician to the home of [member name removed] to check a problem with their upstairs cooling system. Our technician found the cooling system had no refrigerant in it whatsoever which is a major issue. A cooling system with no refrigerant in it has a leak, and due to the leak, the system may have moisture and other contaminants in the system, further degrading the system as a whole. Finally, running an air conditioner without refrigerant (which contains oil for system lubrication) is like running a car without oil and results in compressor damage and/or failure. Our technician made [member name removed] aware of the circumstances and further explained to [member name removed] that we could do a leak search on the system to find the leak and then make a repair to the system but with a twenty-two year air conditioner (average life expectancy is 15-20 years) that this probably did not make a lot of sense. The technician recommended system replacement and [member name removed] agreed to this and a sales appointment was set up for 12:30pm that same day. Upon arrival to the [member name removed] home the sales person (also the owner of the company) found another company’s service technician checking the upstairs cooling system. While Mr. Appel was at the home the other company’s technician met with [member name removed] and delivered the same news that the Appel technician had offered in the morning, that is, the system had no refrigerant in it, yes a leak search & repair could be made, but due to the age of the system they also recommended a new air conditioner. Mr. Appel met with [member name removed] and offered a proposal on four different air conditioners and each option included a substantial price reduction. The price reduction ranged from $500-$600 per option and included a credit of the $84 service call from that morning’s service call in addition to a further price incentive because Mr. Appel knew full well that [member name removed] was getting four to five quotes per their conversation. For efficiency sake this total discount was labeled “Spring Sale” on the proposal. Mr. Appel called [member name removed] back a day or two later to check to see how the decision process was going. [member name removed] said he was interested in one of the air conditioner options plus an option on a ten year labor warranty but insisted on a further price incentive from Mr. Appel. Mr. Appel agreed to reduce the price by an additional $95 in good faith of earning [member name removed] business. On May 13, 2014 Appel’s installation team arrived at the [member name removed] residence to install the new American Standard air conditioner and indoor coil. Due to the fact that the refrigerant lines ran into the attic and then became inaccessible (without cutting drywall and creating an extensive repair) the refrigerant lines were to be cleaned with a certified cleansing agent, RX-11, and then reused. Near the conclusion of the installation process when the new system is checked for leaks it became evident that there was a leak on the system. One of the installation crew members went into the attic and could hear the nitrogen gas which was being used to pressure test the system. The leak was in an inaccessible cavity in the attic. [member name removed] was informed of the situation and we explained that the installation could not be completed until we had access to the leak. [member name removed] informed our technician that he had had a new roof put on the house and he would contact the roofer about making repairs to the lines. Six days later Mr. Appel contacted [member name removed] to check the status of the situation. By this time the roofer had had another heating and cooling company out to make a repair to the refrigerant lines in the attic. [member name removed] seemed upset with the situation and suggested that perhaps he didn’t really need to replace the cooling system. Mr. Appel again explained that based upon the evidence presented that the cooling system did need to be replaced and even if the leak had been fixed and the system evacuated and recharged with new refrigerant (an expensive repair) that there was most likely residual damage to the compressor in the old air conditioner. [member name removed] asked if we still had his old air conditioner and if we could put it back in for him. By this point the unit had been dismantled and scrapped as Appel recycles all old equipment rather than sending it to the dump. Even if we still had the old unit intact it was not a viable option to put the old equipment back into service. Mr. Appel reassured [member name removed] of this point. [member name removed] agreed to have us out the next day to complete the installation. The next day (May 20, 2014) our technician completed the installation, finished testing the system, and started up the new air conditioner. The technician went to collect on the contract and [member name removed] refused to pay the bill at this point. [member name removed] called the office wanting a further price reduction on the work performed. He asked for the service fee of $84 from the service call on May 8 to be refunded but we informed him that that amount had already been applied as a discount on his purchase. [member name removed] showed up at our office a few days later and left a check for less than the full contracted price. We contacted [member name removed] again regarding this and he bluntly told our customer service representative that he would pay the additional amount but he would never do business with us again and he’d make sure to tell everyone he knows how awful Appel is. In conclusion, Appel did everything by the book from diagnosing a major problem with the old air conditioner to installing a new air conditioner. It was unfortunate that [member name removed] roofing company shot a nail through his refrigerant lines which resulted with his need for a new cooling system. Mr. Appel offered an extremely fair price to [member name removed] for the new cooling system; in fact, his price was lower than any of the other prices [member name removed] received yet [member name removed] still rewarded us with a grade of “F” for price on his Angie’s List review which we find unjust. We are sorry that the [member name removed] are left feeling less than satisfied with the situation. Appel tries diligently to please each and every customer and we certainly tried to do so with the [member name removed] as well. [member name removed] has asked Angie’s List to intercede in this situation and has asked for the following in monetary compensation: $84 diagnostic fee returned (credit already applied to the purchase price) and an additional 10% discount totaling $290.00. Although Appel certainly feels that no further compensation is even remotely justified we are willing to send him a refund of $290.00 in exchange for a reduction in his labor coverage on the new equipment from ten years to one year. It is obvious that [member name removed] does not wish to make peace and to continue doing business with Appel so it only makes sense to cut ties at this point including releasing both parties from binding labor warranty which would force him to continue relations with us. If this is acceptable with [member name removed] we will issue a check immediately. We look forward to a timely resolution of this matter. Sincerely, Scott Appel

I called Appel to get a price for a new furnace and central air based on gloom and doom told to me by another hvac company. After explaining the reasons, it was suggested that I have a tech come out to give me a second opinion. The tech came out the next morning and gave a very different opinion--we do not need a new system at all. He even found issues caused by the other company and corrected them. I will be calling them for service from now on.

Installation of the new furnace went very smoothly. The new furnace is working properly. Workers were punctual and they cleaned up everything after the job was done. The owner of the business inspected the work after it was completed. Prior to purchasing the new furnace from Appel, we had used Appel to service our old furnace and A/C for several years. We felt that their repairmen were always very knowledgeable, punctual, and they seemed to charge us a fair price. That is why we chose them to install the new furnace.

After one furnace repair company came out and found a number of problems, I called Appel to see what a new furnace might cost. They thought that my 12 year old furnace was still new enough that repairing it might be more cost effective. They offered to come out and give a free inspection. When they did come out, they could only find one problem needing repair or replacement. They did not even suggest that it needed to be worked on immediately. I decided to go ahead with the work because I wanted piece of mind. They were able to get the part the following week and install it. I am very happy with this company and I can see why they are rated to highly on Angie's List. .

Last year we had Appel install a new HVAC system with a heat pump. Today we had them come out for the first routine maintenance. They replaced the air cleaner filter and did the tuneup on the system and repaired the fan which had been running at the high speed all the time. The service person was friendly, helpful, on time, and offered some tips. The price we paid today includes another routine maintenance in the fall.
Description of Work: Yearly maintaining of HVAC.

Excellent service with the replacement but went the extra mile to investigate if the unit was under warranty (it was)resulting in a substantial savings. Always provide excellent service at a reasonable price.
