They stole from me. It was really hard to prove it with my insurance company, but North American figured out the crew was guilty and did a move for me for free the next time. They took quite a bit from me and I never saw 5 cents for it. They tricked me by putting all of my belongings elsewhere and stuffing my boxes with paper/plastic and pretended that they were heavy.
Description of Work: I used them three times and three times they ripped me off.

The actual truck driver and movers were fine. The billing was awful. They tried to get more out of us than we had agreed upon. My overall experience with them was poor. I would not use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I did most of the packing, but they packed a few things like mirrors and paintings. They moved and stored my belongings.

I would never ever recommend them. They picked up in the middle of March 2012 and dropped them off in the middle of April 2012. It took about 24 days for them to deliver. For 4195 pounds, they charged me $2200. They subcontracted the move out to another company that I wasn’t aware of and when I had the cashiers check made payable for North American Van Lines to deliver, there was another company that I also had to make a check out to and it was never communicated. It was kind of weird to have another company which you are paying after you are told that North American Van Lines is delivering. They were very rude because we had left the cashiers check with my mother as we were leaving for a vacation, and we were a quarter of the way there when we got a call from them saying “Oh no, we have to have the check in another party’s name.” So, we had to go all the way back and have the bank re-do the check or they weren’t going to deliver the furniture. With regard to the price, I don’t know really what the actual weight was and I have no weight slip, so I was overcharged. With regard to the quality of work, there were 3 boxes that were open and there were some items that were broken, but we are still looking and my mom’s trying to go through the inventory to see if anything was missing as she didn’t have all her tools. They were responsive because they wanted our money, but then they were very rude. They were on time, but they were very unprofessional. I would never use them again or recommend them.

The entire experience was just awful, the moving date they gave me was changed by them, half of my items didn't arrive when when they said they would, and when the truck finally did arrive, the employee wasn't equipped for a residential move. They also seemed very apathetic about my inconveniences caused by them and kept insisting for me to fill out a form.

I figured they would be reputable, but they are not. They lost our truck with our belongings in it. They finally found it and brought it to us. Our furniture was in horrible condition when they delivered it. They didn't properly wrap our items. They wanted to charge us six thousand more dollars after we had already paid for the service. They ruined so many of our items.

I had a very bad experience with them. There wasn't much I did like. I did like that they were very professional. When they moved in to here, one of the movers had to use the restroom. While moving, it wasn't nice toilet there, so he just used a waste towel to clean himself. They tore down a unique table unit into several pieces and when they put it up, they put it wrong. They broke a TV set. The worst part was for some reason rather they wouldn't take a partial check, which I don't understand. They gave us a quote originally and told us it would be more because it was just an estimate. They never told to have funds available to pay them. If they wanted to do a credit card, we had to make special arrangements. When they were done, the head movers wrote up the bill and he wrote down the amount of money I gave him. I gave him $500 addition to the original check amount. He wrote that down. I still had $47 short, so they waited and I went to ATM to get the $47. He got the total of $547 cash. When he turned it in to the company, he said I gave them $5 and 47 cents. I wouldn't even have discovered that, except to the fact that the moving company would send me another bill for $300 because they didn't get enough money. We went back and forth because I was worried. They couldn't find it one way or other, so they forgot the bill. They thought the mover might have stolen the money. I was tired and worn out when we didn't get a decent receipt from him. Then he compounded the problem by sending a statement where I got the addition for $547 and he forged my wife's signature to it. I gave the $547 check to the head boss of the moving crew.

They gave excellent service throughout my moving experience. One suggestion: If you have computer equipment, either pack it yourself or closely supervise the packing. I had kept the original boxes and set them out for the packers to use, but they opted to not use those boxes. In all the commotion of moving day, I didn't realize this until later. The good news is that the equipment arrived OK, but it took days to re-assemble because the cords and various peripherals were in different boxes than the computer equipment - and some of those boxes ended up in the garage. There were other minor concerns (like trying to find pieces to lamps that had been disassembled, and trying to find shelf pegs that had been removed from various bookshelves and taped together as a lump on the back of one bookshelf). But overall, compared to all the horror stories about other movers, I have to say the whole process went extremely well - very smooth.

My husband contracted with North American to move our household from Baltimore, MD to Boulder, CO (through a local Baltimore agent, reviewed elsewhere). The local agent packed our belongings on July 11 2011. They were efficient and punctual. However, they only gave us an inventory, not a bill of lading. We (my husband, young daughter, two cats and I) flew to Denver/Boulder on July 14. We were able to bring a camping mattress, "pack n' play" and "crazy creek" chairs on the plane, along with 4 days worth of clothes and our valuables. We decided to stay in our new apartment for the comfort of our daughter and pets. (Incidentally, our cars, shipped July 11 by another company, arrived at our new home July 14!) Our shipment was due to arrive, per the order for service, between July 17 and July 23, 2011. On July 18 my husband contacted North American to find out when we could expect our things. They told him that they had "no information", that our shipment was in a warehouse in Baltimore, and that they had no information about when a truck might be available to bring our shipment to Boulder. At this point our credit card had already been charged the full amount for shipment. By July 20, 2011 the customer service agent admitted that it would be impossible for our things to arrive on time, and authorized $750 in "delay compensation" to help us live in our apartment. Another agent raised this to $850 the next day. They continued to refuse to give any information about when we might expect our shipment, either to us our to our lawyer. Our shipment still has not arrived, although the bill has been paid in full for over a week! As of July 24 2011 at midnight, North American has been in breach of contract. They neither apologize nor seem to have any plan to deliver our possessions. We have no idea whether they still plan to fulfill their obligation in any way, or whether our things have been lost, stolen, or damaged. My husband starts his new job on August 1. We had planned to use this week to unpack and settle into our new home. His work clothes are packed with our possessions, supposedly in a warehouse in Baltimore. Please tell me how I am to furnish an apartment and buy appropriate work clothes for my husband on $850? STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY IF YOU EVER WANT TO SEE YOUR POSSESSIONS AGAIN.

I moved from Houston to San Antonio. They were very punctual, but their service wasn?t too good. The lady who organized the move was terrible. She is the most disorganized person I have ever met. I also found out that they had many complaints about that woman. They didn?t have a list of things. I couldn?t find where my things were as it weren?t listed properly. They just threw everything together in boxes. I have a lot of things that are missing. It doesn?t do any good to complain to the company either. I told them that there was no way I would ever recommend them to anyone.

On June 8th I signed an agreement. It was an estimate/order for service: consumer guaranteed price as well as a brief run down of the job. I gave them a 10% deposit. On the agreement they said that packing and loading was going to be done on the 22nd and 23rd of June. I tried to contact them on the previous Friday to find out the time of arrival on the 22nd. They didn't give me the info. They said they would get back to me and did not.I called them around 10am on the morning of the 22nd to confirm arrival. I was told they were having problems finding a driver and they would follow up with me shortly. All of this was through their local agent in Miami. The agent got back to me within an hour or two and apologized profusely saying that they could not guarantee they could load this week and even possibly the next week. The agent gave me the name of the manager in the customer service department and suggested I call her. I did call Karen Marrow and she promised to look into it and get back with me as soon as possible. She called me back and said they had bad news. There was nothing they could do. She said that they couldn't guarantee that i would be loaded that week or the following week and suggested I find another carrier. I had competitive quotes from other carriers and went back to them, but because it was such short notice, they couldn't honor the prices or promise they could help me. We finally did find a carrier that promised that they could get us loaded before the 25th of June, but the cost was over $1,250 dollars higher. I called Karen Morrow back and asked her to take responsibility for my $1250.00 loss that was a direct result of North American's failure to meet it's contractual responsibility. She flatly refused and offered no help what-so-ever. I sent a confirmation letter of our telephone conversation and I sent a copy to the President of NA Van Lines. I received a call from the Presidents assistant on June 30th. The assistant apologized profusely for the problem that occurred and flatly refused to offer any help with the additional expensive I incurred because of their failure to meet their obligation.
Description of Work: I sold my home in Florida. My closing date was June 25th. I interviewed a number of moving companies as well as received estimates. I selected North American Van Lines because I thought they had a good reputation and were an ethical company. I had thought this for years.

On Mon the 24th, they packed us. On Tue the 25th they loaded. On Wed the 26th they were to deliver. The loaders "demanded" a $50 tip each. I was appalled and said I'd tip them later. They arrived on time but refused to unload until they received my credit card payment in full. I don't own a credit card. The woman I originally dealt with, Wanda, never once mentioned to me that I could not pay with my debit card or a check. They refused to unload the truck until they received payment. I had to work with my bank and arrange permission with them to allow debit card processing. Two and a half hours later they began unloading. It was a disaster. My husband was so very upset and angry with the workers and Wanda actually called and threatened to keep my husband away from them or she'd call the sheriff. I told her to go ahead and call the sheriff. It was a very stressful and horrible situation. Once the unloading was complete they made me sign off that everything was delivered and ok. I had 90 days to dispute any differences. I did file a claim and noted broken, missing and damaged items equaling about $1000. They only repaid $190. I will never use this service again and encourage other members not to either. It was horrible service.

The customer service was great. The crew that was loading and driving the trucks only needed to pack my large artwork, mirrors and curios, as I had everything else already packed. It took the crew 12 hours to load the things from my 3 bedroom house to their truck. They were something else. One of the walls that partitions the boxes fell during the trip and caused a lot of damage to my furniture.

It took me 3 months to accomplish! First it took weeks for them to pick up in Iowa, then another six weeks while it sat in their storage, and 2 weeks to get here. I was on the phone to them several times a week. And then they had the gall to charge me $250 for "date specific" pickup, which it hardly was. The most frustrating thing was trying to get someone to take responsibility for this shipment. The local agent referred me to the national customer service who referred me to the Iowa agent who referred me to the local agent and on and on. The national customer service supervisor Karen Morrow was extremely unhelpful and rude. The driver, however, was very nice and helpful.

North American is quite simply no good. I would not hire them because they could not even return my phone calls. That indicates that they do not need my business. They may be a decent company when doing work, but I never had the chance to find out. I think they could improve upon their business skills and communication.
Description of Work: North American was the moving company I called to move my belongings from Georgia to Texas. They failed to return my calls continuous times. Then they sent me an email telling me I would be contacted by a local representative. I eventually did get called back after I had chosen to use another company.
