He was real diligent about calling me. He just said that he could come out and give me an estimate. I didn’t call him back because I already had someone for the job. I contacted them because of their location and their ratings in Angieslist.

This is the 4th time i have employed Peter Flooring to do work for me. Every time, the service and quality has been excellent. We recently added a 2nd floor to our house. All work was done by a contractor except for the flooring, as i requested to be able to use Peter Flooring for the work based on my previous experience with the company. They were flexible in their ability to work within my contractor' schedule, and completed the work on time and on schedule. the care and craftsmanship they provide is excellent - Peter is very conscientious in his oversight of projects and is very careful and aware on the impact, preparation and success of his projects. He pointed out places in the subfloor that would create issue with the wood flooring, so that i could make sure they were adjusted before his men started the work. Overall, i have been very happy with the service i receive from this company over the years and will continue to use them on all my flooring projects.
Description of Work: Installation of Bamboo flooring for entire 2nd floor addition, plus installation of marmoleum flooring in 2nd floor bathroom.

This was not a good experience. I waited awhile to write this, because I wanted to be as clear and even-handed as possible. In addition, under the Angie's List system, the contractor gets the last word when negatively reviewed, and I don't want any misunderstanding from whatever Peter might write in response to this review. The problems came in four flavors: problems with trust, problems with high-pressure, last minute changes on his end, problems with communication, and problems with quality. Trust: I made a specific request about dangerous dust and they ignored it. We had already put up plastic tarps to contain dust in these rooms. We told the Day 1 crew that we had a baby in the house, that we wanted the active sections to stay tented off, and that they should be careful about taping shut those openings. "No problem," they said. And as soon as I walked out of the room, they tore open the sheets and started the heavy sander. I had to go back and stop them, and they clearly weren't happy about it. I don't expect zero dust. But if they preferred not to take this basic precaution, then they should have been up front about it. Trust was a serious issue from Day 1. High-pressure last-minute changes on his end: before they started, I told Peter we had some furniture in these two rooms that could not be moved out of the workspace, and asked whether he could do the sanding in 2 parts. He said: "No problem." But once sanding started, he suddenly told my wife it all had to be done that day, and told his men to move everything out of the house. I had to rush home from work to stop them from hoisting--and damaging--our piano and dining table outside. The piano stayed, but he pressured us into letting them remove the rest. Then on the final bill, he added a $140 charge for the moving. (Strangely, the bill reads: "Additional WORK per customer’s request & approval: heavy furniture move out.") Nobody requested this "furniture move out," and we only approved it because he seemed ready to quit the job with the floor half-sanded. Punctuality: they were about an hour late each day. Poor communication: there was lots of back-and-forth, wasted time hearing different stories from Peter and his workmen about what should and could be done on each question. First example: our estimate included 3 coats of varnish. On Day 3, the crew called from their van, and I asked: when will you apply the third coat of varnish? Tomas wouldn't answer: "We'll talk." When they showed up, the other guy said this *is* the last coat, and if I have a problem, call Peter. I did. Now I got a blizzard of new stories: the sealer was the first coat of varnish; the floor will actually look better with 2 coats; the crew put thick coats on; his varnish is high-quality. Maybe those things are true, but that's not what the proposal said. And by then it was getting hard to trust much of anything Peter said. Second example: our estimate listed a choice between "natural color (standard kind)" vs. "natural color stain" (for an extra $232). They said they'd show my wife samples of those 2 options, but not until the sanding was done. What they actually did was show her 2 options that both cost the extra $232. When this showed up on the bill, Peter said (variously) that he had explained this to us, or that I had given him the green light to do it by saying (during the Day 1 furniture stand-off) that he should use his judgment. I recall saying that he could use his professional judgment *on whether to move the furniture and do the sanding/sealing all in one day*. And I only said that after hours of arguing with him. Mediocre quality: the workmen left varnish splotches on our woodwork, and tore dents in two places. Peter insisted his guys couldn't have done it. To his credit, he did come back out a few days later to look at it, and when he saw it, he admitted his workmen could have done the damage. He offered to bring back his guys to touch up, but I refused. He said he still wanted to make it right, so he promised to bring us some cans of a wonderful wood conditioner, free of charge. That was 3 months ago. I'm still waiting. I can think of some charitable explanations for all this: the language barrier (Polish-English), and clumsy communication inside their company. The less-charitable explanation: Peter picked up another contract on Monday and decided to rush our job so he could move on--and then charge us extra for the privilege of getting a rush job. About a week after all this, I looked up Peter's Flooring in the Better Business Bureau. Their rating: "C", accreditation revoked. By the 2nd day, we just wanted them out of our house. I would never hire them again.

They did a very nice job. They came out right away when we called for an estimate. Provided a detailed estimate and started quickly. The workmen were very skilled and pleasant. They did their best to seal off the dust. The floors look nice and they answered any questions we did have.

We contracted with this company to refinish the floors in our new home. We made it abundantly clear that time was of the essence in completing the job; we were living in a hotel, with all of our furniture in storage, and complex arrangements were in place for us to move into the home on a specific date. Peter Flooring promised to liaise with our painters about timing of the promised three coats of polyurethane that were to be applied to the floors, and we were led to believe that they had done so, and that work on the floors was completed. We moved our belongings into the home on schedule and began to unpack. Approximately a week later, we were contacted by a representative of Peter Flooring, who asked when the final coat of polyurethane could be applied!!! This would have required moving 250 boxes, as well as over 80 pieces of furniture and ourselves, out of the home again. We asked whether Peter Flooring would pay for the cost of this, and never received an answer. In addition, by this time, other construction was underway at the home, precluding any further work on the floors even on a room-by-room basis. We spoke to a representative of Peter Flooring about adjustment of the balance due, and reached an agreement to pay a sum that was $1300 less than the full balance. We promptly paid the agreed sum. The floors squeak all over the house, and they are already showing signs of wear due to the fact that the final coat of polyurethane was never applied. We question whether even a second coat of polyurethane was applied on the first floor, the surface of which appears noticeably different from that on the second floor. Now, nine months later, despite the fact that Peter Flooring did not complete the work we contracted for, without any prior notice, they have turned over the $1300 alleged balance to a collection agency.

Response from Peter Flooring Inc
First off, We don't even know who this member is is. The work was contracted with another person. He was aware of the fact that the final coat of floor finish was never applied. When the 2nd coat of floor finish was applied, we had asked him to make a decision on when he wants the final (3rd coat) to be applied on the floor. At that time he stated that he would call us when the painters were done with painting the house. So we waited and waited. After some time had passed we called him to follow up with him about the application of the Final Coat, since we have not heard from him and there was still a balance due of $1,380. He stated that he would call us when he gets back from vacation. So we waited another month and nothing. He did not call us. We've made numerous of attempts to contact him, and left many messages. Final message to him was that if he does not return our phone call within 72 hours, his account will end up with our collection agency. But even after we left the message, we did not get a response. So we put the account with the collection agency. Right after our collection agent contacted him, we got a phone call from him stating that he thought that the job was completed and that he was never aware of the fact we still have to come back and apply final coat of floor finish. Which is a lie, because if in fact he thought that the job was fully completed, why DIDN'T he send his final payment due of $1,380? Was he trying to cheat us from the very beginning? He started to complain that he would have to move all of his furniture and belongings out again in order for us to come back and apply final coat of floor finish. We told him that we could discount the job by $300 if he does not want the final coat of floor finish, but the rest needs to be paid as soon as possible, since most of the balance owed was for the work that was already completed. P.S. We also want to mention to him, that it takes time for the wood to get acclimated, but in order for the wood to stabilize correctly and to avoid any problems with cupping of the boards, etc. He needs to maintain the CORRECT HUMIDITY LEVEL at the house and the correct temperature (especially during the cold seasons of the year) otherwise the flooring is going to show sign of cupping boards. Also the member LIED about the total price on the final invoice and the one that the person we had contact with throughout the job signed off on, on the original proposal. The TOTAL cost on the final invoice was EXACTLY THE SAME as the one that was listed on the 2 sheets of the proposal that was signed. Like I mentioned at the very beginning, we don't know who is the member, all the conversations that we had in the past were with someone else, who was aware of ALL the things that I stated in this note. The contract that he signed was to complete the whole job with 3 coats of floor finish.

The work was performed and done well. The problems occurred when workers misplaced/switched key for entry into house. I had to leave work in downtown Chicago to let them in Skokie. The key they were using I had never seen before. We had not moved into the house yet and they were the only people who had access to the house. Upon inspection of work we discovered that two unopened shower curtains were missing. Each valued at $30. Our key was never returned, with the key missing we were forced to replace locks in the house. With the replacement cost of the locks and the missing shower curtains, I with held $200 from final bill of $1084.00 and sent a letter with the final payment explaining my actions. After several heated conversations with Peter the owner, who accused me of being a liar several times, I told him I was not going to pay the last of the balance. He proceeded to cash the check I had sent and then waited 2 years to submit the full amount (not just the $200 withheld) to a collection agency.

I think they are a little bit pricey, but the results are good. Their workmanship was very good. Everything like punctuality and communication was fine. I think they are considerably more compared to other people I checked with but I used them because in my previous house they did such a beautiful job that I didn't want to consider anyone else.

In spite of Peter Flooring's good reputation I was unable to obtain a written quote for services. An estimator did promptly come out to my home. He told me that refinishing my floors would require two days and he further stated that I would receive a quote within a few days. I did not get a quote and upon following up with the office, I was told that the estimator was having "email problems" and the quote would be sent within a day or two. I followed up once more, yet no quote was received.

Although the quality of the work was good, I would not use this company again. The owner claimed he had applied the agreed upon 3 coats of varnish, when I had proof that only two coats were actually applied. During a heated phone conversation he apparently hung up on me, though later he claimed his phone went dead. They appeared several days later (just before I was going to initiate a complaint with Angie's List) and completed the job. They were also a bit pushy about collecting the fee, calling me to see if they could come over to pick up the balance. I told them that wasn't the way I did business, and dropped the check in the mail.

They listened to what we needed and gave us some suggestions. So far we think their price is very, very reasonable. I'm very pleased. We still have to have them come out to finish the second phase but from what we've seen so far we don't doubt it will still be a great experience. We will use them for our future flooring needs.

I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM. I made a 6pm Monday appointment for an estimate on wood floor finishing and vinyl tile installation. I reconfirmed the appointment the day of the appointment. They stated they would call 2 hours before they came. At 6:45pm I got tired of waiting so I called them and found out the estimator goes home at 6pm. What I was also told is that they were going to call 2 hours before they came. Liars; the estimator goes home at 6pm... remember? They never acknowledged there was a 6pm appointment. So, they offered to send out the installers within 45 minutes to do the estimate. They had to call the installers to make this arrangement. The installers arrived on time (approximately 7:30pm). I was then told they only do wood flooring. I had told them when I made the appointment it was a 45 mile drive for me, so being on time was important. So, I made a 90 mile drive for me to find out they could only do half the work. I just can't get past the incompetence of taking my phone request. Why didn't you immediately tell me that you don't do tile. Very poor customer service. Can you imagine what the work would look like!! They can't take requests nor instructions. They owe me 90 miles worth of gas. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM.

They did good workmanship and I think they do good work, but they just have poor communication. The estimator had asked me if I wanted hardwood vents in the floor and I said no. The contract said I didn't want them. The workers did not speak English and they ended up cutting my floor to put the hardwood grates in, then tried to make me pay for them, but in the end I didn't have to. I tried to call the office and tell them what was going on they said they couldn't help me and that I needed to speak to the owner; couldn't get a hold of him.

Dustless sanding is a bit of a pipe dream if you've ever refinished hardwood floors. Still, Peter Flooring was great about sealing off the back room (living room) of our house from the rest of the residence, and we set up house in the dining room temporarily. The crew made fast work of the project and did great work. We did find one raised segment of the floor once work was completed (most likely from a nail near a seam), but we're hiring them again to do our master bedroom this summer. The lead worker couldn't believe that we wanted to stain the floor so dark, but they were good about coming back till we were happy with the color. They have a great deal of pride with there work, and provide ample information about how to keep the floor looking great.
Description of Work: We decided to rip out the old previous owners rug and put in hardwood in our family room. Shopped the list and came upon Peter Flooring. The estimator was prompt and we pulled the trigger.

I am happy with the end result, but was quite disappointed in Peter's communication. When they pulled up the tile in the downstairs hallway, they told me they had to replace a section about 2ft. x 2ft., which I was fine with, and agreed to. When I arrived the next morning, they had tore up ALL of the floor in the entire hallway, an area of about 100 sq ft, something I definitely had NOT agreed to. At that point I asked Peter about it, and he said they needed to do it. I expressed my frustration, but had them finish the project, since we had to move in later that week. They finished the job and did great work, but then they sent me a bill for $1100 more than the agreed upon estimate of $2400. I argued with Peter for a couple weeks and we finally agreed on $800, but I feel this is pretty unfair since all I agreed to was a $200-$300 repair.

Working with Peter Flooring was a very bad experience. They were late every day they were supposed to work and one day they left and were supposed to return a few hours later to finish, but never came back. They didn t call to say why or when we should expect them back to complete the job. Our 2 day job took 4 days. We were displaced from our house for much longer than we needed to be because they over scheduled When I did finally speak with him, he basically made a bunch of promises that he ultimately did not keep. The crew speaks very limited English but works hard and does decent work. I would not recommend using Peter Flooring. A common theme among all the negative reviews here are "not on time" and "miscommunication".

We just bought a house and the hardwood floors were horrible. It looked like someone had tried to finish the floors themselves by pouring lacquer all over the place. We called a few different companies for quotes. The guy from Peter Flooring showed up when he said he would (unlike some of the other companies), explained all of our options, and got a formal quote to us in a day or so. Their price was far and away the best quote we received for the work. We decided to go with Peter, mainly because of the great price. We decided to add the molding in after they started and they were very good about explaining how much that would cost and very good about sticking to the price they told us. They finished the job when they said they would, and the floors look great. I still can't believe they looked so bad at one time. We are very satisfied with their work and would recommend them to anyone.

THE EXPERIENCE COULDN'T HAVE GONE ANY BETTER. THE WORKERS SHOWED UP EVERY DAY ON TIME AND WORKED 11 HOUR DAYS TILL THE JOB WAS FINISHED. TOTAL TIME ON THE SITE WAS 5 DAYS FROM START TO COMPLETE TERMINATION, AND THAT INCLUDED TWO POLYURETHANE FINISH COATS, WHICH BY THE WAY, HAD NO UNPLEASANT ODOR. THE RESULTING JOB WAS BEAUTIFUL IN ALL RESPECTS. I COULD RECOMMEND PETER FLOORING IN: PRICE, WORKMANSHIP, AND TOTAL JOB PERFORMANCE.
Description of Work: RED OAK HARDWOOD FLOORING INSTALLED IN MY 1889 VINTAGE HOME.

When I inquired about staining and finishing the stairs I was given a price of $3600. There are 28 standard oak stairs, no railing or spindles, this price seemed extremely high and I called to see if it was a mistake. Peter returned my call late at night and said he would lower the price to $2400, but he had to know within the hour or the work would stop. He explained the price was high because they had to be hand done. He went ahead and finished the stairs that took one man less than a day, I called Peter back thinking he must have thought there was railing or spindles, but he said the price was for the stairs only. Peter claimed the living room floors had to be refinished because the temperature dropped, but his crew told me the floors were fine.
Description of Work: Installed new flooring throughout new house, stairs were not included in price...they were not installed during estimate.

The member should be very satisfied with the price that was given to her, $2,400 for doing not only 28 steps, bu also 30 risers and 4 stringers. The price covered only the workers' time & the material with no profit whatsoever to Peter Flooring since we did other work for her. Yes, all of the steps, risers and stringers had to be hand done because you can't do it with the big machines and that is why it's harder than doing the floor and more time consuming. Railings and spindles were not included in the price of $2,400, but they were in the 1st price of $3,600. This seemed to expensive for the member, that's why she decided herself she only wants steps, risers & stringers done and that's why the price was lowered to $2,400. She should be happy with the price we did it for because other contractors would charger her a lot more.

I loved the work of the new flooring on the stairs but was disappointed in the repair job on the hardwood floors. We also did have an issue with communication on what I wanted. We were able to clear that up and it looks beautiful. As for the repair job, it just is not quite the best. There are little gaps enough so that my chair catches when rolling across and it looks a bit uneven. I would hire them again for a new installation but not necessarily for a repair job.
Description of Work: I had them repair gouges in the hardwood floor in two rooms. One was a fairly small one and the other was 18"X2" and 1/8" deep. They also installed hardwood flooring on 2 short flights of stairs with a landing.

Their work was well done, but they didn t do everything they said they would. They were supposed to be done in a week, but they were not. Then they charged me extra for something. They were expensive because I didn t get what I asked for. There was misrepresentation and miscommunication. I wouldn t recommend them.
Description of Work: I hired Peter to remove some old flooring in my house and install 900 square feet of hardwood flooring. He also stained it and coated it.

Excellent job. I could not have expected more.
Description of Work: They were excellent. Did great work and right on time. I thought I had to have the floor replaced on a condo we have and they told me not to do that, but instead to refinish it. I then had them come to our home and do repair work on our home also. Again right on time and good work.
