I called to have a leak in our furnace fixed and also fix a noise that our air conditioner was making on start up. Since it was a service call there was no set time for them to show up, we were just given a window of 8-6. They did show up within that time, but they stated that they showed up much later due to bad traffic from a freeway closure. It would have been nice to have been updated that day, when they knew that it would be later in the afternoon, rather then sooner. However, saying that, when they did arrive they were very professional and quickly found both problems and fixed them. The noise from the air conditioner was due to a start up electrical issue that required a booster. They had a universal model on the truck that improved the noise by 50%+. They offered to leave the current booster in and said that if we wanted to replace it with a more powerful one, that they would return within 30 days without an additional service charge, and we would only have to pay the difference in cost of the booster itself. All in all a great experience and would use them in a heart beat again.

Steve, the owner of Home Comfort Systems, came to our home and presented a proposal for replacing our furnace and air conditioner. Of four proposals that we received, we were the most impressed with Steve's. He was the only business owner to present a proposal. He was the only one that presented references from past customers. He had the lowest price, the best payment terms, and the best warranty. But most of all, I was impressed by his enthusiasm for the business, his recommendations, and his honesty. Everything he said agreed with what I had learned through other research. Steve was able to schedule the installation on the day following our second meeting. The three installers arrived at about 9am, and finished at about 5pm. They were all cooperative and friendly, the kind of contractors that you enjoy having work in your house. I discussed the installation with them periodically throughout the day, and they made some small changes at my request. The installation was very professional. It looks great, and everything worked as intended. They cleaned up and removed all the trash. Steve came out himself at the beginning and near the end of the installation, to be sure that we were satisfied with everything. Also, Steve does not request any payment until you are completely satisfied. He came by a week after the installation to collect payment, even though I was willing to pay sooner. After two weeks I had one minor concern about the operation of the furnace. Mike came out the day after I called, and checked it out. We agreed there was no issue. I highly recommend Home Comfort Systems for your heating and air conditioning needs.

Steve, the owner, visited to quote replacement for central heat & air. Also discussed the problem of my below-grade, in-slab ductwork flooding with water during heavy rain or snow melt. It was definitely bad news financially, but it wasn't entirely unexpected given my own research on the internet. He recommended complete replacement of all ductwork, relocating all ducts into my unused attic. He also discussed other options and their risks. The quoted price for a 80% efficient system with all new ducts (flexible material) for a 1600 square foot ranch home was $9 to 10K. The furnace and AC were about $4K, with the balance for the new ductwork. I eventually went with another contractor who quoted the same price but a better spec., namely a 95% efficient furnace and full metal rigid ductwork. Still Home Comfort was a solid 2nd choice and probably would have done a good job also.

Pre-sale experience: I requested an estimate via Angies list, and received a call from Steve, the owner of the company, within 5 minutes. He stopped by that day. I learned a great deal about air movement, temperature, and humidity as well as about the technology in current equipment. By far the most important thing I learned in that conversation was that Steve is in the "Home Comfort" business, not the heating and air conditioning business. Every interaction I had with Steve and his team members bore that out. I collected two other quotes and, as often happens, I asked one of the providers if they could do something differently during the installation (relocating the furnance and water heater by about 3 - 4 feet). That provider figured the additional cost into his bid, but I needed to circle back with Steve to see if Home Comfort Systems could do it and how it would impact the estimate. I called. He immediately called back. He came over, again, that same day, and revised the estimate on the spot. Two key differentiators for Home Comfort Systems are right on their quote form. The first is Steve's name and cell phone number next to the word (Owner). The second is a paragraph titled "No Extra Charges" - The total price includes all parts and labor necessary, and any additional charges will be covered by the company - what a confidence builder. We shook hands and talked time-frame for installation. Long story short - the installation began the next morning at 8:00. The Installation: Steve called to let me know his crew and equipment would be arriving as scheduled, and that he would be over later after finishing a service call. Mike and Charlie arrived and immediately laid drop cloths from the door to the furnace, and then asked me to review what I wanted relocated where. They immediately set to work dismantling the current systems. Steve arrived and insured all was on track. What stood out as the day progressed was the depth of knowledge and the attention to detail exhibited by the team. For example - Charlie was relocating the gas pipe, which required moving the shut-off valve. He asked me to come check that it was positioned within arms reach for all family members in case there was an emergency when I wasn't at home. When they finished with the water heater they showed me the initial setting and how to change it - mentioning that they deliberately set it at the lowest recommended setting to ensure no risk of scalding occurred if the new heater was hotter than the old one. The relocation added quite a bit of time to the job, and Steve (who'd come back a couple times) realized they would need to return to finish up the next morning after getting heat and hot water up and running. Prior to leaving the guys insisted on cleaning up the work area. Again, the attention to detail came out. One of the remaining items was to connect the air intake - a PVC pipe that runs from the furnace to outside the house that draws in fresh air. For the one night the furnance would run and draw air from inside the basement. During the day, Charlie couldn't help but notice we have cats. He had the foresight to connect an elbow to the intake vent. He explained that this spot on the furnace would be nice and warm, and if a cat were to lie down on it they could shut off the furnace! Once they got the new furnance and water heater running they prepared to leave. That's when they noticed one of the new water connections was dripping. It was after 6 p.m. by that point, and without a word they just set about resoldering the joint, then waited to insure it was, in fact, sealed. In the morning Charlie and Victor arrived promptly and quickly finished the installation. The work area is immaculate, the relocation of the furnace and water heater turned out wonderfully. They walked me through all equipment controls and provided manuals with that same attention to detail. Closure: Steve arrived to walk through the job and insure I was satisfied. We talked about the capabilities of the new equipment and he tuned the furnace. He then walked me through the process of getting the Nicor rebate. As he left he (again) told me how to reach him and to call with any questions or concerns. I may have questions, but I'm very comfortable that I won't have concerns.
Description of Work: Replacement of Furnance (from 1984), A/C (from 1971), and Hot Water Heater (from 1980's). Relocation of Furnance and water heater from prior position to optimum location (requiring duct, elec, and gas line relocations). Reason for replacement was pending furnance failure (failing heat exchanger)

I found these guys through Angie's list after talking to some insulation companies regarding our heating issue on the second floor. Two of the rooms stayed cold all the time. I thought it was an insulation problem, so I first called insulation companies and guess what? Their solution was to put in more insulation. That was not what I really needed, eventhough I did end up putting in more insulation as well. The real problem for a larger house is improper temperature control. So, I called home comfort systems and Steve came and asked me all the right questions and told me that I need a zoning system for my house. He was absolutely correct. They installed a 3-zone system, it was not cheap (around $3500). However, it solved our problem completely. All of our rooms are usable now and comfortable. Thanks steve and team for a great job. Also, a few weeks later I had a problem with my furnace (separate issue), I called these guys, they helped me diagnose the problem over the phone and helped me fix it myself. Great company, great people. I highly recommend them without hesitation.

I contacted this company after a service man from another company (ARS) made his annual check on my furnace and stated that my 18 year old furnace was in desperate need of repair--the heat exchange unit "appeared" to be damaged. I was advised by that service that I needed to have a $1,500 part replaced immediately, and "the law required that he turn off my furnace due to this potential danger until I had the part replaced. However, if I authorized him, he could have the work done that day." I stated that I needed a second opinion on this expensive part since my furnace had been operating just fine prior to his inspection. He turned off the furnace and left after having me sign a waiver. It was late at night, and it was freezing, so I turned the furnace back on. I was in a panic and immediately referred to Angie's List. After checking reviews I called Home Comfort System and Steve came out the next day. He checked the furnace and stated that I was not in any immediate danger and had time to consider my options. He would recommend replacing the heat exchange unit eventually, but suggested that due to the age of the furnace, if I could afford to do so, I should consider replacing the entire furnace. After checking my home and discussing heating issues I had been having over the last twenty years--excessive heat at night in the 2nd floor rooms--he also recommended a heating zone system that could resolve this problem (often found in homes over 25 years old). I opted to have the furnace replaced and "test" the heating zone system. He said he would install the latter (heating zone system) but would not require that I pay for it (for 30 days) to make certain that I was convinced that this extra component was worth the costly investment. I was sold on this additional feature after the first night. It has made all the difference in the world throughout my house. I cannot believe the difference in comfort levels. I know that this feature will eventually pay for itself. Steve and his team of professionals did an outstanding non-stop job and completed all the necessary work within a ten hour period. I would not hesitate to recommend this company, and alread have. They know their business, worked efficiently, and cleaned up the entire area before they left. I am so grateful to Angie's List for this referral. It is the first time I used this website and won't be the last.
Description of Work: I had a furnace and a "heating zone system" installed by this company. I called Home Comfort Systems for a second opinion after being advised by another company that my furnace was not operating safely, and my family was in imminent danger of carbon monoxide poisoning unless I replaced a very expensive part (heat exchange unit @ $1,500) immediately. After meeting with Steve of Home Comfort Systems I decided to replace an 18 year old furnace and also purchase an additional component (Zoning system) to make my home more energy efficient. Details follow..

When it comes to work being performed on my home, I am a perfectionist. This company met my highest expectations. Steve and his crew exceeded expectations on a tough project. We asked them to change our system to provide better heating in our finished basement. They created a third zone for the basement and had to put dedicated ducts into the finished part of that area. Steve warned us that several pretty good size holes had to be made in the drywall ceiling to work the flexible ducts through to the length of the room. I anticipated a huge mess, but we were willing to go through that to make the basement more usable in the colder months. To our surprise, the guys were able to get the job done with only two holes being cut out and they were much smaller than I expected. Because this was a challenging project, they had to return a number of times work out some kinks, and they did without hesitation. Steve will tell you that his objective is 100% customer satisfaction - he's not just talking, he's committed to it. Thanks for the warm basement, Steve!

There's not much to say about this company that has not already been said . . . they are fantastic!! We had a furnace installed by them about four years ago. Today, which is the first cold night of the year, we realized that the furnace was not blowing warm air. We called after 6pm and the phone was answered. We were told a technician would call us back . . . and we expected we would receive a call back the next morning. Well, about 1/2 an hour later, we received a call back from Mike. Over the phone, he was able to walk us through how to fix the problem. In the meantime, as a back up, he arranged for a service call the next morning. Our heat is now working and there is no need for a service call. Now, we have a warm house and we don't have to take time off work to wait for a service call. They will be the only company we call for any future heating or air conditioning issues. Thank you!

The overall service was completed very professionally. The furnace and A/C were done with all possible professionalism and the Humidifier was done well along with the media replacement. The total price quoted was the price charged. This is the first time we used Home Comfort Systems, but will definitely will not be the last. Thank you, Angie's List, for the recommendation. Job well done by both Angie's and HCS.

Home Comfort has provided service to my 18 year old air conditioner several times over the past 3 years. So when it died in the midst of this summer's hot weather I once again called Steve Bilica. As he has done in the past,, Steve was very prompt in returning my initial call and scheduling an estimate. Knowing that we were in the midst of the hot weather and that he would not be able to install new equipment for another week, Steve came back a second time at no cost to "tweek" the existing system to keep it limping along . Steve's price was comparable to another estimate I received but became the most attractive once he added the $150.00 Angie's List discount coupon. That, coupled with the excellent service Steve has provided me in the past, sealed the deal. I highly recommend Home Comfort for your heating/cooling needs.

After reading reviews for Home Comfort Systems on Angie's List, we decided to switch to them for our annual winter furnace tune-up and are happy that we did. Mike was great - he didn't mind my hanging around to watch him work and explained how to check which system was malfunctioning if we needed to do so. I had questions about the humidifier and he answered them completely. We will be using Home Comfort Systems for our HAVC needs from now on.

I had them come out to check my air conditioner which had stopped cooling. They found that the coil was leaking refrigerant, and gave me two options, fix the leaks they found in the coil or replace the coil with a new one. As they could only guarantee the leaks they fixed, if any others appeared it would cost me the same again. So we just decided to replace the entire coil. When they were done the installers gave me the extra valve that came with the unit, should I one day need to replace the outside unit with one that used a different coolant. When talking to Steve about our options regarding how best to fix the air conditioner we mentioned that it pretty much runs day and night. He mentioned that really for a house our size there should have been two air conditioners and furnaces. He then suggested a zoned duct system that lets you control cooling and heating to various rooms in the house with a remote. The deal was try it for two weeks and if you like it buy it otherwise they would just remove the system and put things back the way they were. So we tried it and it worked as promised, with the air conditioner running less, so we kept it. All in all I feel Steve (who is also the owner) is an honest bussinessman and his crew were, punctual, left the work area clean, and explained how to operate the zone system completely.

We are very happy with the zoning system Home Comfort Systems installed. We were looking to convert our home from a traditional HVAC system to zoning and so glad we found Steve Bilica, as he is truly an expert in this field. All work was performed as promised and there were NO surprises. We are so happy to finally be cool at night in our upstairs bedrooms! Steve took the time to tell us exactly what he was going to do and what we were to expect in return. Happily - he delivered. Another key strength to their success is their longtime and knowledgeable staff. Mike really worked hard both days to make sure he got the job completed on time. Since we made the decision to hire Home Comfort Systems, we found that some of our other friends have used them for years. They sing Steve's praises about how well he services their unit. We look forward to a long relationship with Steve and HCS.

I recently joined Angie's List seeking a credible and useful resource to locate quality service providers among the sea of seemingly indistinguishable companies across the internet. I was no longer willing to rely solely on generic search engines or other forums online to differentiate the good from the bad. My first attempt in using Angie's service occured here with my search for a local company to repair or replace my zone cooling system in my relatively new home (< 5yrs old). I was experiencing tremendous swings in temperature upstairs vs downstairs with my A/C essentially running non-stop and never getting the master bedroom upstairs to approach a comfortable cool temp while the downstairs was an icebox. I had tried another company before and the adjustments to vents and replacement of dampers provided no noticeable change while costing me plenty. So I was very motivated to find a service provider with experience who could actually diagnose the problem and not give me a bunch of generic factors which "could be contributing to the problem". After finding Home Comfort Systems on Angie, I immediately was able to schedule a service call. The technician was prompt and very courteous (actually called me at work to explain my options). I asked for a bid with different options and received it promptly. I was impressed that both the technician and later the owner Steve, separately recommended that I not opt for certain pricey air cleaner features as in my situation I would not benefit. They explained exactly why and gave me several helpful recommendations. While the pricing of the zoning system was on the higher end, I did not feel like it was marked up ridiculously. Rather, I was choosing a very well built product recommended by an experienced and honest business. The rezoning was ultimately almost a full day's work and the technician was courteous and patient with my questions. Steve stopped by not once but twice to check on things and answered numerous questions of mine pertaining to not only the system, but also to provide me with a better understanding of the flow of air in my house and how it could be optimized. I also recall his saying that this system would completely change my air quality. Having struggled with other "solutions" in the past, I took the prediction with a grain of salt. By early evening, my entire house was transformed into perfectly balanced air. My bedroom which I had sweltered in for years in the summers was the coldest room in the house. And the downstairs remained normal with no air running. The impressive part of this service was that these guys took the time to not just completely trace the current ductwork patterns, but also then to thoughtfully redesign the layout and install several damper switches and junctions to completely change the flow. That for me is the difference between an A/C repair service and a top quality A/C repair business. That was the intangible part of the service that we all search for in a business: the approach to their work as if it was their own house - the same thoughtfulness and care that sadly is not routinely provided to paying customers, but only to our friends and family. That evening, every person that was in the house made a specific comment about how incredible and fast the change had happened and specifically that the air felt so much lighter and cleaner. I couldn't have been happier. If you have struggled with certain parts of your home experiencing extreme tempertures and you are assuming the only solution is a new bigger air conditioner or even a second one, I encourage you to contact Steve and try this system first. I appreciate the fact that Home Comfort Systems lived up to the high rating they hold on Angies. I couldn't have found a better fit for my needs. From reading previous comments on HCS, I was well informed as to the business I wouuld be dealing with. I felt that this company provided premiums in the quality of their service, reliability and their honesty and I was willing to pay market prices for that piece of mind. In the end, my time wasn't wasted, my problem was fixed, and my house is a new place. Do not hesitate to use Home Comfort System for your needs.

Called Home Comfort Systems I believe on May 31st 2011. I called about 9:00 am and was very impressed when I received the response call back at 9:30 am from the owner Steve Bilica that same day. We set up an appointment to meet at my home on June 2nd in the evening, which Mr. Bilica had asked what time would be convenient for me mornings or evenings for the estimate. Mr. Bilica was prompt and waiting patiently for me in front of my home on the date of the estimate. We discussed many different units and options which would best suit my needs and at no time did I feel Mr. Bilica was trying to sell me something I didn't need. He was upfront with costs, quality, and gave me some education on furnace and air conditioning features. When I had made my decision I decided to go with Home Comfort. They were within the ballpark with other estimates and Mr. Bilica sat and chatted with me for awhile. We talked about our children and family, and that made me feel comfortable. My scheduled appointment was on June 15th, but Mr. Bilica called me later and said they had an opening on June 11th, a Saturday, would it be more convenient for me to have them install then? This was great, I didn't have to miss any days from work! On saturday Mr. Bilica called ahead of time advising they were on their way, he and his two employees discussed the installation, Mr. Bilica left and his two employees worked diligently and had the job done by the afternoon.I also at the time of the payment forgot to mention the $150.00 Angie's list rebate coupon. I called Mr. Bilica the following Monday, he asked if I could fax a copy of the final bill and copy of the coupon which I did that following Tuesday and within a few days he had dropped off a check at my home without hesitation. They were a pleasure to do business with and I would certainly recommend them.

I interviewed 3 companies for the job (all selected based upon ratings on Angie's List and proximity to our home.) Of the 3, two were excellent and 1 was a significantly less knowledgable. We selected Home Comfort based upon the owner's involvement. the work was performed on time and in a very professional manner. They left the job with no trace that they had been there. I received a follow-up call several days later to make sure that everything went well and we were satisfied.

I have used the services of Home Comfort Systems for years. They are friendly, but professional. Mike is knowledgeble and always patient teaching me how to care for my airconditioner and furnace. e.g. I keep putting in the filter wrong and he reminds me of the right way. I get advice on the best filters. Things like that. Very reliable. I have them out every year to clean and service my furnace and my airconditioner. They also installed a furnace for me a few years back and were helpful in going over the pros and cons of the current models. My airconditioner is old and no one tried to sell me a new one, just let me know that the day will be coming, so I can be ready. In the meantime Mike was happy to help me maintain my old one as long as I chose. Very easy to work with.
Description of Work: I had my annual servicing of my whole house airconditioner.

Steve, the owner of the company, came to our house to give us an estimate for replacing our furnace and possibly air conditioner. It is rare to deal directly with the owner of a company so I already was feeling good about the appointment. Immediately, Steve impressed us with his knowledge of heating/air conditioning issues and told us he could indeed install a high effeciencly furnace, even though another company, Four Seasons, had previously told us we could not get such a furnace because of venting issue in our basement. When I asked Steve about how could Four Season say it was not possible and you say you can do it no problem, he explained that it would take some extra work and that they would probably have to move an existing piece of ductwork. He guessed that the salesman from Four Seasons probably was just less experienced than himself and couldn't see how the high effeciency furnace could be installed. Needless to say we were very pleased with this because we really wanted the high effeciency furnace. Steve also looked at our air conditioner and since it was only about 5-6 years old recommended that we not replace it. To me this is a sign of integrity, because Steve was not trying to sell us something we didn't necessarily need at the time. Steve also asked us if we had any trouble keeping certain rooms warm enought and/or cool enough. We said yes, our upstairs bedrooms our often too hot in the summer and our large family is often too hot in summer and too cold in winter. We added the large family room on to the back of our house, which faces east and has 3 exterior walls. We get lots of morning sun which makes this room, with a vaulted ceiling very hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Steve asked us if we ever heard of zoning, which we had not. He explained that this system was expensive (about $3,000), but that he guaranteed it would solve our problems. The zoning system gives you multiple thermostates that can be placed in different rooms that control the furnace/ac. Dampers or inflatable blatters are installed in all the ductwork so that heating vents can be closed off and/or opened as needed. With the multiple thermostats this allows certain rooms to receive more heat or cool air as needed. The system sounded perfect for us and we were so happy that Steve recognized that we might have such an issue. Steve explained to us how well his company has been rated by Angie's List and other respected groups, and then told us something that is truly hard to believe. He said he would not asked for any kind of payment for his services until after the job was complete and we had a couple of weeks to experience the new system. And this is exactly what happened. Steve's work crew came and worked on installing the new furnace and zoning system over 2 days. Steve, the owner, came by both days to make sure everything was going well. His installers were extremely courteous and professional. They stayed and answered my questions for over 15 minutes after working all day. It got very hot (95 degrees plus) a few days after the system was installed so we had a good test of how it worked. We felt like there was too much conditioned air going to our kitchen and basement so Steve's guys cam back and tweeked the system to satisfy our needs. We didn't pay Steve anything until 2 weeks after the system was installed and we were 100% satisfied. I am still in shock and awe that a company operates this way in today's day and age. Also, for this kind of service, you would expect to pay more money, but his prices are as competitve as anyone's. If you are considering anything to do with heating/air conditioning or hot water heaters, you would be a fool not to call Steve at Home Comfort Systems.
Description of Work: Installed a new high efficiency (95%) furnace and zoning system.
