I purchased a maintenance big deal for $69. During maintenance, technician discovered a capacitor that needed to be replaced for a price of $171. I approved not knowing what the price of the part was, as I was in the middle of a conference call. Afterwards, I looked up the price of the part, which was only $30 retail and $20 on Amazon. When I called up Empire to inquire as to why I was paying $140 more than retail for the part, I was given a bunch of BS for an answer. First, they said I was paying for the manufacturer's warranty, which i replied as to why i am paying Empire for the manufacturer's warranty. That is already built into the price of the part whether I buy it form them or from a retailer. Besides it is the manufacturer's warranty and not Empire's warranty. They then said I was paying for stocking fee to have the part of the technician's truck. I told the person that i work in supply chain and that the cost of stocking the part on the truck is minimal, accounts for a small premium over retail (less than 10%), but that still does not explain the $140 difference. They then said I was paying for the "expertise" of the technician and for the cost to diagnose, replace, install, and test the part. The expertise of the technician is the premium rate for which I am paying for the maintenance service in the first place and is already built into their hourly rate. It took the technician less than 10 minutes to replace the part, This was less time for the original maintenance. There is no way their hourly rate is more than $600 an hour. Also, why am I paying for the testing of a brand new part. Why would they stock their truck or install bad parts. If they do, that is not my problem. I should not pay for the testing of new parts. Besides, the technician showed me the test of the bad part, which took less than twenty seconds and requires to part to be pulled out of the unit.. It is clear they are trying to obfuscate and complicate the process to make it seem like the cost is justified, but it is not. I am sure they are fine technicians, but they will find a broken part and then up charge you for that part for four times the cost of the part. I will never use again.

From our first contact through the installation, our experience with Empire was a very good one. Chris evaluated our existing systems and listened to our needs and preferences. His proposal covered everything we discussed. It was a good balance of cost and efficiency. Of the three propsals we received, his was the most clear and detailed. Chris also quickly answered all our follow-up questions. The price was competitive. The installation crew was prompt, efficient, and clearly experienced in working together. Pat, TJ, Ben, and Mike took care in and around our home. The installation was neat and all areas cleaned. Pat took the time to ensure we understood and can use all the new features of the digital controls. He has a wealth of experience and understanding that was evident in his coordination of all aspects of the installation. Our job was an extensive one. Even minor were fully addressed, and we are very pleased with the outcome and Empire's professionalism.
Description of Work: Empire replaced three full HVAC units, two with humidifiers, and made modifications to a fourth unit. Empire also replaced all four thermostats with new digital thermostats and replaced a water heater as well. Much of the existing HVAC equipment was original to the house and nearly 30 years old.

I've used Empire since I bought my house in 1990. Most recently they installed a new exterior HVAC unit at my house. My old unit was having problems just as we were experiencing the very cold weather of late February. On two separate occasions, Empire came out the same day I called to see what was up with the old unit. They researched new package units to give me a quote while I was debating whether to replace the unit. Once I decided to go ahead they ordered the new American Standard unit, got it in and scheduled installation in just a few days. The installation was very smooth, with a crew of three outside the whole of a cold day making sure it was in and completely functional. They even painted the old gas line to the unit so that it looked better, which I thought was an incredibly nice thing to do.

We turned our A/C unit on for the first time since last year and found that it was blowing room temperature air. Empire sent out the same tech we had last time. He quickly diagnosed the issue, and performed a thorough inspection of the rest of the system, though we declined a full leak test as the system is really old and we are planning to replace it soon. A top up of the coolant, and everything was working again. Coolant was pretty expensive, but that's not their fault since our unit uses the old kind of coolant that's not made anymore.

Only to find out that the HVAC unit had been taken apart by the previous technician. EMPIRE was patient, responsive and was willing to also go out the next day. I would definitely use them again. We didn?t use them because the first tech had taken apart the unit and it was easier. Our prop mgr made an error.

they couldn't fix it and said I needed a new unit that would be about $3,500. I had another company come for a second opinion because I wanted to make sure it was broken and the second company found a blockage that was preventing the excess water from draining properly. I just don't think the tech was thorough enough and that is one of the reasons I wanted a second opinion. I don't like to give bad reviews but Angie's List keeps asking me to review this company so here it is. I think it was hopefully an honest miss that happens with old units like the one I have.

Keith Lumpkin did an excellent job. He has been with Empire for years and is so very capable. I've been using Empire HVAC for several years for both my regular HVAC system and the Mitsubishi which is in one room. From Mary Helen's sweet voice when you call Empire to Cindy (always courteous) in billing, people are treated as valuable customers. I don't know the owner, Mr. Hoover, but everyone with whom I have dealt at Empire speaks highly of him. I think this is one reason his business is so successful. Technicians are always on time and courteous. I consider Empire HVAC as "my" company and would not consider using anyone else. As a former college professor accustomed to grading, I give Empire--especially Keith Lumpkin--an A+ in all categories.
Description of Work: Keith Lumpkin, my regular service provider at Empire, installed a new compressor in a Mr. Slim Mitsubishi system for my sunroom. The cost was for labor only as the part was under warranty. I must mention that I have a service contract and get a discount or the price would have been more. I recommend service contracts for year-round routine service which includes discounts for other services that might be needed during the year. Keith did an excellent job. He has been with Empire for years and is so very capable. I've been using Empire HVAC for several years for both my regular HVAC system and the Mr. Slim which is in one room. service was great. Changed 2 filters which was included in price. covered shoes without being asked. very polite and efficient. Didn't try to sell me any other products which was a nice change. also allowed me to pay for a 3rd coupon even though i had only purchased 2 (didn't realize i have 3 units not 2!) only problem was time. they give an extraordinary window of 4 hrs. (longer than Comcast!) then they were close to 1 hr. later than that. my time frame was 12-4pm and the tech didn't make it here until closer to 5pm!!

I called them in the afternoon on Wednesday, and they had a technician out to my house within an hour and a half. The tech really knew his stuff, quickly figured out what was going wrong, and handled the necessary work. The furnace works great now.

I purchased a furnace inspection through Angie's List when my furnace started acting up. Then it stopped heating the air in my house. I decided to not wait for the folks at Empire to call me (as it was going to be below freezing the next few nights) and contacted them directly. The pleasant woman who answered the phone confirmed my Angie's List purchase and scheduled a service visit for between 9AM - Noon the next day. As I was informed, I received a confirmation call around 8:45AM, and the technician arrived promptly at 9:00AM. He was courteous, knowledgable and professional. He completed the inspection, identified the faulty igniter, gave me my estimate for the fix and gave me some advice on my furnace. All within about 20 minutes.
