My Computer Tech was here longer than an hour but he only charged me an hour. I have no concerns whatsoever. He cleared up every issue that I had. He even did a few other things. He cleaned out my entire computer. My computer would come up with a blank screen about every third screen that I went to. I thought I had a virus and he came out and diagnosed it and it was my wireless router. He got me a new one. He sold me like a $75 router for $50. He told me that he had a $50 one with him and it turned out that he had the next step up and he still gave it to me for $50 and that cleared up all my issues. It helped with him cleaning out the computer and the speed and I am totally thrilled with my computer now.
Description of Work: My Computer Tech diagnosed my computer and installed a new wireless router. He charged me $50 for a new wireless router and he's $65 and hour.

After my friend's PC was zapped during a lightning storm, she came to me for help because I'm the informal neighborhood 'techy'. Based on advice I got over the internet, we reseated the graphic card which solved the problem briefly. However, when the problem reappeared shortly thereafter (6 beeps and inability to boot), I contacted My Computer Tech. Roland spent at least 30 minutes discussing the issue over the phone, verified what I already knew, and provided some other possibilities. He was very upfront about the problems that could occur from this sort of electric strike and made sure that I (and my friend) understood that there was a great probability of multiple components being affected. While we could have tried to dabble some more, my friend decided to trust Roland with her PC, which he picked up later that day. After running detailed diagnostics, he contacted us with the news that both the system board and graphic card (a cheap one) needed replacement and strongly suggested we replace the power supply as well. Based on what we had read elsewhere, this seemed like the best plan, so my friend agreed. This all occured during the Fourth of July week, so there was a slight delay while Roland awaited receipt of the new system board, but he stayed in regular contact with us regarding the status. When finished, he delivered the repaired PC and hooked it up to the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and network to ensure it all worked correctly. My friend is very pleased with the work and notices a definite difference with the higher quality video card. We both felt that the price (which included an AARP discount) was fair. I'm glad to know that there is a reliable PC professional so close to my home and will definitely contact My Computer Tech next time I encounter a computer problem that exceeds my own abilities to resolve!

Initially, Roland tried to perform virus removal over the phone and failed... came to my home on 11/29/2011 to remove virus What was supposed to be a simple virus removal turned into a hard drive crash caused by Roland the tech. He said it was going to eventually crash because of the age of my computer... that was absurd. There was nothing wrong with the hard drive. Saying it was going to eventually crash is like intentionally crashing your vehicle and saying it was going to happen eventually. Anyway, everything was lost, but fortunately, it was recovered. Roland took the CPU from my home and changed the hard drive. I asked him if a new video card and additional memory would help, and he said it would. He charged me for a video card though he said he took an old one from his daughter's computer. The CPU was returned to me on 12/4/2011. The video card worked initially, but after several days, the card failed every time after 15-45 minutes of use. I informed Roland of this, and he said to open the CPU and put a fan on it. It was not a useful or practical solution. I then texted him about the issue and instead of calling me and working things out, he said if I wasn't happy then he would put my old card back in. That wasn't helpful and he NEVER called to discuss though I tried communication several times. That's not working things out with the customer -- it's dictating terms. I don't like being treated that way as a customer and would not use his services again. When you cause a hard drive to crash and put the customer's saved files at risk, well, that's not professional. Problems/issues are going to happen, but they're to be worked out between the tech and the customer -- not dictated by one party or the other.
Description of Work: Initially, just a virus removal But it turned into a new hard drive, data recovery, and re image PL Istalled new 500 GB hard drive -- caused by tech Roland during virus removal Installed video card -- customer choice additional memory -- customer choice

Hello. Customer had complained of a PC that was locking/freezing up on 9+ year old Dell XPS Desktop. Called in early December of 2011 and we set an appointment for service. On initial inspection of the PC, looked inside the case and there were several bulging and leaking capacitors on the system board. I showed these to the customer and informed him that this was bad news. It was a sign the system board was going out and there was really no way to repair them, that the board would have to be replaced and that may very well be part of the problem. But, that it may run like this for 10 min's or 10 more years, I had no way to guarantee this one way or the other. But in my professional opinion, he would be better off replacing he PC. It was nearly 10 years old, he had got his monies worth out of it, but it was time to move on. The customer did not seem concerned and just wanted the virus's removed. After booting the PC up, it was evident that it was heavily infested with parasites. During trying to remove the parasites, it also become evident that the Hard drive in the PC had problems. I started a full chkdsk with surface scan on the hard drive. During the scan the hard drive reported it had unrecoverable sectors.... the drive was bad.... I did not cause the drive to go bad, it just was. A hard drive is a mechanical device, meaning that it has moving parts, and anything with moving parts will die someday, just like the engine in your car, no matter how well you take care of it. The average life of a hard drive is between 5-20 years, this one was close to 10. At this point I informed the customer that he was getting into big money to fix a nearly 10 year old computer and that he would be better off replacing the PC as he was already complaining that it was running too slow for his games. The customer was not interested in this idea as it was a top of the line PC when he bought it nearly 10 years ago, he had a lot of money invested in it and wanted to repair it. I again suggested that this was not the best course of action, but in the end it was his money and his decision to make. He agreed to replace the drive, install additional memory and to upgrade the video card in the PC to improve the performance of his games. So we performed data recovery on his failed hard drive, performed a re-image, installed additional memory and installed a nice used AGP video card that was less than 6 months old from one I had laying around the shop that would run in this PC that had limited 12v power from the power supply. I had checked into compatibility between this PC and all available AGP gaming video cards and found that several people had this setup and it seemed to be one of the top cards you could actually get to run in this PC given the proprietary, non-upgradeable power supply that was in it.. The card was used, but barely so and I sold it to him for a good price with a one year warranty on the card, just as it was new. I burnt in the PC and tested with torture test over night before delivering it to him on a Sunday, my only day off, to make it more convenient for the customers down time. Customer seemed to be pleased with the performance the PC had after the upgrades and re-imaged new hard drive and video card. A few days later he called stating that one the the games he was playing seemed to freeze after playing it for 15-20 min's. I asked him to help me diagnose the problem so we could resolve the issue. I told him it was more than likely one of two possible things causing the issue, a power problem (the card was not getting enough external power from the power supply when being pushed), or a thermal problem (The card was overheating due to lack of proper venting and cooling in the PC case). I advised one simple test would be to open the case up, place a small house fan to blow cool air into the case and try his game again to push the card to see if the problem was resolved simply my getting better airflow. He did not want to try to attempt this, that it was not a solution. I agreed it was not a permanent solution, simply a diagnostic step to try and isolate the problem. I stated that if in doing this, if the problem when away, we knew we had a cooling issue, that could easily be resolved by adding additional cooling fans in the case to provide better airflow. He refused to do this to even help isolate the problem. I at that time told him that the card was under warranty, I would be glad to come back onsite and refund the money for the card and to install the old card back in the PC. This again was not a solution to him, he wanted another video card. I told him in that case, I would gladly refund the money for the card, he could purchase another video card from any retailer he wanted and I would install it for him at no additional charge. He was an Angie's List customer and I wanted to make him happy. I sent him a link via email to various other video cards that "should" work in that PC given the limited power restraints of that power supply. I never heard another word back from the customer after that, until 6 months later he posts this slanderous "review". The offer still stands to refund the money for the video card and he can put any other card he wants into the case. This is nothing more than a case of "buyers remorse" from someone that made a bad decision into trying to even repair this system even though I practically begged him from the beginning against doing so. He was putting more money into this PC to try and repair it than it was worth. But in the end it was his decision and I did what was requested of me. I love and appreciate all my customers and will always go the extra mile to make them happy. I think that is evident from every other review on this site about me and the fact I have won Angie's List Super Service Award, two years running. If the member will call me, I will gladly setup an appointment to remove the card and refund his money for it.

Roland is polite, professional, very knowledgeable, and responsive. He came within a few hours of my call and diagnosed the problem. It turns out that my hard drive wasn't bad, but it had some small "bad spots" on it, which Roland programmed the computer not to use. He would have had the computer working for me the same day, but we noticed that my CD drive was not reading Roland's boot disks properly and I asked him to replace the CD drive (he had to get parts and take my computer to his shop for that). He brought the computer back the next day fully functional, all for less than $100.00. Much cheaper than buying a new computer, which is what store-front repair shops invariably try to get me to do. I've used Roland several times for this and other computers, and my experience has been the same each time. I wouldn't think of using anyone else.

Due to a failure my computer had lost all access to data on the hard drive. Despite my having worked in information systems for over 30 years, it has been a few years since I've used any of the recovery tools I have. Getting the data recovered and the computer working again quickly was vital, and so I decided to turn it over to someone who does this day to day. Roland Milligan responded to my call immediately, showed up exactly at the time he said he would, gave me a very reasonable quote for repair and desired improvements, and estimated when he would finish the work and return my computer to me. He returned the computer exactly when he had promised, and had done a great job of recovering everything and installing the improvements. He had also replaced a DVD/CD drive that was failing at no additional charge. Getting work done when promised, at a very good price, and having it done as well and better than expected is great. I hope I never need his services again; but I would not hesitate to call My Computer Tech again if I do need a repair, and I have already recommended Roland Milligan to other people. He also builds computers, and I will probably have him build my next new computer.

Roland was fantastic! Called in late afternoon. Knew I needed to be repaired asap. Wife came out immediately and picked up. Reason: Roland tried to trouble shoot over phone and requested I shut computer as he knew there was a serious problem. Returned computer late next day. Found several virus's and as stated before found one in the hard drive which he had never seen before. What impressed me the most was he took the time to send out the virus to a company to determine what type of virus. What makes him different from the other companies is he answers your phone calls or if on telephone with another customer, will return call quickly. In this industry it is all about service! Total cost was $150.00 and well worth it. Roland has become MY Computer Tech!

Description of Work: Over the weekend I had a virus attack my computer and knocked out my Internet Explorer. Roland came out and removed the virus and was done in about 20 mins. He has done work for us before when I was having problems with my Internet Explorer not responding on Yahoo. Fixed it in less than an hour. Also loaded free anti-virus software that has worked very well for the last two years. I would highly recommend Roland. He is very professional and knowledgeable.

Sent email inquiry to My Computer Tech (Roland) describing the symptoms of the problem I was having, asked a couple questions and for a guesstimate on repair cost. Received prompt response from Roland with estimated cost based on the root cause of the problem (he described several possibilities). Decided to have Roland do the repair and was very happy with the result. Roland repaired the problem for the amount he had estimated the repair cost to be, and included several software apps and virus protection software for no additional charge. He delivered the repaired desktop to my home, reconnected all the peripherals (i.e. speakers, printer, etc.), demonstrated that the computer was now working properly and showed me how to use the software he installed. I am always very 'picky' when selecting a service provider, but was very happy with this experience. I highly recommend My Computer Tech, and of course Angie's list as well!

I live relatively close to My Computer Tech so I dropped my laptop off and left it with Roland's wife Kathy and gave her the details of the problem. Job 1: Problems w/my desktop. I contacted Mr. Milligan through e-mail & he promptly got back to me. He scheduled an appointment that was convenient for me. He came to my house & listened to all of my concerns. Then he started his 15 point "tune-up" on my PC & laptop. It took abt 90 mins. We decided I needed more memory, he had to come back to install the memory, he was out of stock of that particular memory card. He was very clear in his communication w/me (it is hard for me to understand tech language). But he made me feel comfortable. He also installed a folder with a monthly cleaning I need to do to help make my computer perform better. I thought that was a really nice touch! He guarantees his work & if I were to have any problems in the future, he would assist me. Job 2: Mr. Milligan was amazing. He was extremely knowledgeable & helpful. He stood behind his word & made my computer work very well. It took him 2 trips -- but he did what needed to be done -- AT NO ADDITIONAL COST!
Description of Work: Job 1: A 15 point "tune-up" on both my PC and laptop. Installed additional memory.($159.79.) Job 2: Mr. Milligan came back to my house to pick up my computer and drop it off. After the initial visit, he was not happy with the performance so he came back the next day to take my tower to remove and reinstall the hard drive.($0.) He kept me informed through the process and was very quick to get things done.
