IT WENT HORRIBLE - THIS IS THE WORST COMPANY IN MY OPINION AND EXPERIENCE Upon hiring the company, they requested a large upfront fee of 6K which I believed was to be used for buying material for the project (it wasn't, apparently that was part of the only work they did do??), I thought I was then paying for the work as it progressed in phases and it was supposed to be completed in approximately 2 months time. RCG did the highest paying jobs first, though that was not the order they were in on the contract, they also did not do the work properly (I have pictures to prove this) and they are walking away from the contract stating I broke contact by canceling a check - (this will be explained later). I am now left with half a house unusable, I can't hire another contractor, they want to bid on the entire job per plans, and don't want to trust the work that RCG did; I have already given RCG 1/2 the money but only 1/6 of the work completed (Yes I should have known better, but Mr. Mejia seemed legit, I even found him on the BBB website). Problems started with rough plumbing taking 4 to 5 weeks to complete and failing inspection over 4 times, I was told they should be done in 1-2 weeks with rough plumbing. I paid for this phase thinking they had done the work properly (somehow it passed inspection), but after looking closely I later found out they made major mistakes (drains don't connect or line up to vent, don't fit inside wall frame, toilet drain is not adequately spaced from the framing (12"), etc). This phase was also to be preparation for the microlam beam however this is not completed either since the walls are not completed and support beams are not in place, yet they accepted payment. After rough plumbing and microlam "preparation" they poured the driveway and patio but the driveway has not passed inspection even though Mr. Mejia took payment (I did not know we did not pass and Mr. Mejia requested payment, I later found out about the inspection failing). I trusted in Mr. Mejia to be honest about the work, he was hardly on site, and even lied about things so he could leave the job site. He sent some workers to do framing and they didn't line up the framing correctly or space the stud correctly (studs should be tight to the floor framing and were not and framing should not have gaps, yet theirs did). Around the time the job was to be completed Mr. Mejia said he would need an additional month to finish the job, he said he would ensure his workers were there everyday as expected and getting the work done, yet when I left to go on vacation for 2 weeks I returned and NOTHING had been done, he had promised to take pictures of the progress and email them to me, I never received an email. After not doing any work for over 2 weeks, RCG was able to do the majority of the block work they said would take at least 1 week to do in 2 days time. However the work they did was not properly done in several areas, which again I have pictures to prove, mortar is missing in some of the blocks leaving gaps, not all of the blocks are level and straight, or line up with each other, and some of the blocks have cracks in them. He also did not do a corner block as I had requested and he had originally agreed to do, he just covered the crack and this is a load bearing corner. There is more but this should be enough for you to get the picture. Lastly I gave RCG a check early because his lead begged me to, stating that the other workers would not get paid if I didn't and they have families to provide for, and I am a nice guy so I gave them a partial check. Once I cut the check (on a Friday) the workers for RCG look like they dropped everything and left for the weekend, they even did not finish making lines on a block wall that they had started and allowed the stucco to dry, and left the yard a mess, instead of working an extra hour or two. The following Monday, RCG's lead became confrontational with me and acted at one point as if he wanted to get in to a physical altercation by stepping towards me with a balled fist, I then canceled the check and requested a new lead which Mr. Mejia refused. He then proceeded to lawyer up. BUYER BEWARE OF THIS ONE!
Description of Work: RCG was contracted to modify my house from a 3 to a 4 bedroom, installing a microlam beam to support roof structures to remove a load bearing wall, update/install 2 bathrooms and convert another bathroom in to a laundry room, convert a car port in to a garage, install garage door, and install a patio and driveway.

Response from Reliable Construction Group
01/06/2014 RELIABLE CONSTRUCTION GROUP RESPONSE – COMMENTS – [Member name removed] (Job address: [Member info removed]). • We have a contract signed with [Member name removed] on 08/18/2013. We had good rapport with him during our early interactions since, as per his own account, we were the most responsive contractor in terms of timely responses during the bidding responses and pricing structure within reason. • [Member name removed], as per his statements, wanted to improve the property above describe for reselling purposes. This particular house was his first endeavor as investor that might led him to unrealistic expectations about industry and market behaviors: * He already utilized a previous contractor to improve a bathroom before he engaged contractually with us. As per his comments, [Member name removed] had disagreements with that particular contractor about performance. * Job being performed by Reliable Construction Group was permitted while architectural drawings were produced by architect hired directly by [Member name removed]. * [Member name removed] had also frictions with architect of record, Mr. Wayne Ferrell, about alleged job performance in terms of drawings preparations and revisions. • We do have a signed and executed contract with [Member name removed] which is quite explicit in terms of payments schedule as per job progress. During the initial negotiating process, [Member name removed] requested some changes from our original contract draft (including some price reduction) which we performed as per his requests. If were any doubts about contract structure or payment schedules, why those were not addressed before singing and executing it? • During project execution [Member name removed] showed regular signs of mood swings while communicating with Reliable Construction principal, Mr. Camilo Mejia, and more pronounced frictions with superintendent (Mr. Isaias Alvarez) and crew on site. As per his own account, [Member name removed] was working around ninety hours (90) per week, mostly during night shifts; that could had being a factor causing behavioral swings. • At certain stage of the project, we requested a payment from [Member name removed] for $3,500.00. He provided us with a check for that amount. A few days later, after another friction with our crew, [Member name removed] placed a stop payment on that particular payment. Again, we were concerned with the unusual business etiquette coming from [Member name removed], but continue to communicate with him in an attempt to resolve disagreements. • In spite of several on site meetings with [Member name removed] about ongoing difference of opinions, we were unable to reach an agreement with him. As an established organization, fully licensed and insured, we pursued legal recourse to remediate the situation. We do believe it is a good business practice to resolve matters within the boundaries of current laws and regulations. As a common practice in our society, attorneys are brought to the table initially as mediators bringing an objective perspective to a convoluted situation. • We do have an empathy with [Member name removed] as a new investor attempting to improve his finances while working hard during the process; by the other hand, Reliable Construction Group, as a team of committed individuals serving our community for a decade we certainly have earned the right to protect not only our name but the livelihood of our workers and their families.

This was the middle of three bids and the initial contact was good. BUT then this project took almost a year to complete. We were living out of state as this work was done, and recently relocated. Although we were in residence the summer of 2011, two times Fall 2011, a month at Xmas 2011, two trips in Spring 2012 (over $2000 spent to make ourselves available as needed), and then moved in May, repeated assurances that the job would go forward were not met. Either they would not show up or would disappear after a short time. Dozens of emails to inform them of when we would be there, and the fact that much of the work did not require our presence did not move the project along. Both county and city officials were amazed that it took so long to complete. Neighbors complained of trash left (and sent photos) and we had to insist on cleaning up at one point, and after the job was "completed" we still were left with a can full of construction rubbish. It passed inspection, but the quality left a great deal to be desired. Reliable is not a word I would associate with this company. I retain the emails and photos of the work and there are many more stories. Their website seems to contain a number of glowing references, but this was ours. Perhaps it was that we were not around to monitor the work, but the result was that same.
Description of Work: Contract and plans were to enclose a carport and install a hurricane garage door.
