An ECM technician came on Monday, July 6, 2015, and found a coil that was frozen and causing condensation, but he was not sure about the cause. He called the office and scheduled an appointment for Wednesday with another technician who is a refrigerator expert. Two men came on July 8, 2015, and did some testing, discovering that there was too much freon in the line, which they corrected. The men were prompt, professional, thorough and and neat in their work.
Description of Work: The refrigerator had water on the floor under it and ECM diagnosed and corrected the problem. There was no charge, because this service is provided by our annual service contract.

June 2015 we lost all AC. Called ECM, tech said connections at compressor weren't tight causing short which melted and fused high and low voltage lines blowing circuit in air handler. Repaired at a cost or $250+, and we signed a maintenance. contract for$350+-. On the following Sat afternoon I heard a loud bang and all electric for the house went out. The garage where the breaker panel was filled with smoke and the smell of burnt insulation. I Called ECM and was told, no emergency service available, 1st available response would be Mon. or Tues. I c/ independent electrician who came Sat eve. AC breakers in main box were burnt up and main breaker for house had tripped and burnt. The main box was destroyed. Luckily, the house didn't burn. A new box was obtained and installed by the electrician on Sun. at a cost of over $2000. ECM c/ Mon to schedule their repair rep. I refused and after faxing the repair details ECM agreed to refund the $600+- recent charges. I was still out the $2000 for the new electrical box but was glad my wife and I were alive and the house didn't burn to the ground. We sPent a night and a day without electric or AC, and experienced a great deal of stress. We had tot vent the garage for several days to get rid of the stench. All of this was caused by the original sloppy installation, poor connections, done by ECM.

They provide air conditioning service. They provide appliances, plumbing and electrical maintenance. They provide mainly annual contract. You buy a yearly contract for them and they can come and fix your AC, plumbing and electricity any time along the year. They had to order the part, it's still on its way. Once the parts are here, they were going to come back and repair the shower. I would recommend to the company to have repair calls for AC units after you sign the contract because for AC you have to wait 30 days before having the first service call.
Description of Work: They came to check on a problem we had with the shower.

I have been a Service Contract customer with ECM for approximately 5 years. I just LOVE them! Their service reps are always pleasant and the Technicians are very professional. I have gotten to know a couple of them over the years and I now ask for them. ECM has always been accommodating...so much so that I just purchased a new Air Conditioner from them...and I received great service from the AC installers as well. I just felt I had to write this as people are very quick to write the bad but you rarely see the good! Thank you Angie's List for allowing me the opportunity to tell people how I feel about ECM! They deserve 5 stars in my book!!

We were told at that time that the unit has a 10 year warranty on the system. However, when he looked at the compressor, he determined that it was, in fact, a bad compressor, but the cost would be $819.75 to fix it. I asked about the warranty, but he said that that covers onlt the compressor, not the coolant or their labor. I asked how long would it take to replace, and was told approximately 2 hours. I understand the labor costs, but $819.75? Talk about getting reamed, or should I say Rheemed?
Description of Work: Came out to look at a Rheem air conditioning compressor that was not working. The system was initially installed, by ECM, in July of 2011. Since then, I had another repair on the air handler which cost over $450.00. (also not covered under their warranty)

Response from East Coast Mechanical
East Coast Mechanical (ECM) received the complaint filed by this customer whom is upset over the Air Conditioner repair cost estimate that we provided to replace the compressor. ECM installed a new RUUD Air Conditioner (Model 14AJM36AO) for the customer on July 22, 2011. The installation came with a one year labor warranty by ECM and a 10 year manufacturer’s limited parts warranty and does not cover any labor or Puron for any repair. The compressor is under warranty but the labor for the job is not. On September 8, 2014, at 8:26am, ECM received a telephone call from the customer stating that their Air Conditioner was not cooling and requested service. The customer was told that the Air Conditioner was not in warranty and that there would be a $45 diagnostic service fee and they agreed. They were also informed that the technician would run a complete system diagnostic, and once the problem was identified by the technician, he would quote them a price for the repair prior to commencing any further work and again they agreed to our terms. ECM dispatched a technician who arrived at their home at 10:25am. The technician performed a thorough diagnostic and identified the problem as a defective and internally shorted out compressor. The technician went over with the customer what was needed to replace his air conditioner compressor and initially the customer agreed to move forward with the repair. The technician documented all the information on the customer’s invoice so that he would have the details in writing. A price of $819.75 was quoted for the entire repair. The customer mentions in his complaint that he should only be responsible to incur the labor cost for this repair. The price we quoted is mostly for labor and Puron which is not covered. EXPLANATION OF WORK NEEDED Three hours labor to install the compressor One hour travel minimum to pick up and return the warranty compressor One hour minimum to process the required warranty paperwork and pick up the compressor 12 pounds of Puron minimum Compressor Capacitor Acid flush kit – to clean interior of copper lines Liquid line filter drier – to remove acid and moisture in system Suction line filter drier – to prevent acid and moisture from entering compressor Welding supplies, copper fittings ALLOW US TO EXPLAIN THE INSTALLATION PROCESS Freon in the system must be removed and recovered (recycled) Copper lines attached to the compressor must be heated to 1,300 degrees to disconnect Compressor must then be sealed and welded shut Compressor must be returned to the factory dealer Warranty paperwork must be filled out with a complete diagnostic finding New compressor will be picked up and delivered to the customer The system will be flushed with an acid cleaner (required when a Compressor is shorted) Compressor will be installed and all the pipes will be welded shut A suction line & liquid line filter drier will be installed and welded in place Compressor capacitor will be replaced A vacuum pump must be hooked up to the air conditioner for at least 30 minutes (removal of air and moisture from the system is critical) We now fill the unit with Puron (a 3 Ton AC will hold a minimum of 12 lbs. of Puron) The customer also mentions in his complaint that he previously paid over $450.00 for a repair to his air handler. This repair he mentions was not performed by ECM and we have no knowledge of what services may have been performed by another company if any. We think it is unfair that the customer believes that ECM should incur these additional expenses needed to return the Air Conditioner to manufacturer’s specifications. Nevertheless, on conclusion of the service call, the customer decided not to proceed with the repair, as it is their choice to choose any contractor they wish to perform this work. However, as told to them when they scheduled the service call, our technician did request the payment of $45 but the customer refused to even pay the $45 diagnostic service fee. Basically, ECM absorbed the cost of a free service call and a free system diagnostic and the customer gets to file a complaint.

The gurgling noise was caused by a clog in the plumbing lines to the house. The plumber used a camera to go into the pipes outside to determine the location of the clog and then they used machines to clear the main line. About an hour or so and they were done, everything was cleaned up and all was working like new again. Glad to know anyone can call ECM for A/C or Plumbing Service, not just service contract holders. I would call on them again.
Description of Work: We had gurgling noises coming from the pipes in our laundry room when someone was using the shower. Later, we had water backing up in toilets. We called ECM because our neighbors have a service contract with them, but they also provide service even if you don't have a service contract with them. They came out right away.

Scam. Scam. Scam. A/c unit under warranty. Technician shows up with a bad attitude because no one was at my client's home to greet him when he showed up 3 hours prior to the appointment window specified. 10-15 minutes later problem is found, easy fix. Technician tells me it will be over $500 but since it is their equipment, that they installed, that has their 10 year warranty on it, he is willing to give a "discount" so the new price will be $422 +$45 for coming out. When I asked how it is possible for the labor costs to be so high when the unit is under warranty and the issue was found and could be resolved within 1 hour he responded "we have to process the warranty and that takes 5-6 hours". At this point I call my partner who is very familiar with a/c repair and have the technician explain his "5 hour warranty processing" story and my partner and I agree to decline having him fix it. As I mentioned, this technician showed up with a bad attitude so the shock of us not buying into his B.S. warranty "processing" labor charges just aggregated his unprofessional and down right inappropriate behavior. I would never suggest using ECM just on the principal of the technicians aberrant behavior alone but the 5-6 hour "warranty processing charges"....that was the icing on the cake. Too bad for ECM, I and my partner running a real estate brokerage, will have to tell every single one of our buying, selling and prospective homeowners what a scam they are when asked.

Response from East Coast Mechanical
In response to this report, we researched our records and found that ECM did install for this customer a RUUD 2.5 Ton air conditioner (Model RBHP-215075H2) on March 14, 2011. This air conditioner came with a 10-year manufacturer’s limited parts warranty that does not include labor for any repair. However, besides the manufacturer’s limited parts warranty, ECM provided an extended 2-year labor warranty, with this particular purchase, which has since expired on March 14, 2013. Therefore, when the customer called on July 30, 2014, to request a service call, they were advised that there would be a minimal diagnostic charge of $45 and they agreed. As promised, the technician ran a complete system diagnostic. On conclusion, the Technician advised the customer that he uncovered a defective Evaporator Fan Motor and quoted the customary charge in our industry for this type of repair. We would like to take this opportunity to mention that ECM has been providing residential and commercial air conditioning, plumbing, and electrical services since 1985, and did not aggressively increase our customer base by “scamming” customers. We take great pains to be certain our pricing remains competitive and strive to provide Total Customer Satisfaction. Also, please be assured that we take our customers’ comments very seriously (good and bad), and will look into this customer’s comments regarding our Technician’s attitude. We do not condone any type of negative attitude company-wide. This brings us to the comment in the report that reads, “How is it possible for the labor costs to be so high…”. Actually, most customers have a misconception regarding labor charges for warranty repairs and are simply unaware of the expenses incurred that fall under labor when repairing an air conditioner. For further clarification, below is the process ECM would need to follow in order to return the air conditioner to manufacturer’s specifications: 1. Remove air handler motor blower assembly by disconnecting all wiring to motor 2. Remove motor blower case 3. Return motor to Manufacturer’s Authorized Dealer 4. Complete all necessary warranty paperwork (this is very important and will include repeating the execution of the warranty registration process, in order to make sure we do not void the customer’s manufacturer’s 10-year limited parts warranty) 5. Return with new Evaporator Fan Motor and install by reconnecting all wiring to motor. 6. Complete comprehensive testing and balancing The actual total labor that encompasses the entire process: • 40 minutes at customer’s home to diagnose the problem and discuss the repair. • One hour travel minimum to return the defective Evaporator Fan Motor • One hour minimum to process the required warranty paperwork (warranty paperwork must also be filled out with a complete diagnostic finding) • One hour minimum to install the warranty Evaporator Fan Motor As you can see, the repair is more involved than what most customers realize. Nevertheless, we understand the customer has chosen to go elsewhere. While this is certainly their choice to make, we are confused as to why the customer also chose not to pay ECM the agreed $45 diagnostic fee. ECM expected to receive payment for services rendered in good faith; instead we received a negative report from the customer. To this end, we hope that the information covered herein conveys a clearer description of the situation.

Two teams, one arrived 30 minutes before the other at the appointed time. (OK with that) Staggered start - Well planned. Work was well coordinated, both teams were efficient, organized and executed their tasks with craftsman like precision. The work area was the third stall of the garage (an area I use as a workshop) and it was kept clean throughout the installation. All aspects of the job were fully completed to my satisfaction. I am an installation engineer myself and am very meticulous. The first unit was up and running in four hours (the house never went above 75) The second was online an hour later. No issues. Price quoted was what we paid. Two follow up calls came the following week from ECM to ensure our satisfaction. Top of the line units with all the features we wanted, no hassle sales, easy financing and the best price. Next closest bid was nearly double what we paid. Highly recommend these folks.

Samuel provided me with a pros and cons of a couple of systems that would heat and cool the house. The following morning on time the technicians, Rick and Carlos, arrived on time, and started dismantling the old A/C system. They worked steadily, clearly knowing what they were doing. They were responsive to my concerns, explaining in clear details what I needed to know about the changes they were making to instal the new equipment. They carefully explained the working of the new humidistat and temperature control, as were as the maintenance needed. The electrician came a little later to upgrade the wiring to code for the new system. They explained that the county permit inspector would come in several weeks to inspect their work. They cleaned up beautifully after the installation. Throughout the day they were courteous and professional. The crew was top-notch!

1 of 2 A/C's were sporadically not cooling. That day, I got a mailer from ECM for their 'customer rewards program', so I signed up! Figured if A/C was still acting up in a day or two, I'd set an appointment. They've on-line appointment requests, which I filled out that week. No response. Rec'd my 'customer rewards' card including $50 gift card off their services. Phone's acting up so I tried a second on-line appointment request. No response - ever! In the meantime, I was referred to another provider who came out and fixed the problem the same day. So I don't know how their service is! Their mailing program worked; their web page/appointment scheduling didn't.

Upon receipt of information from Angie's List regarding this complaint by [member name removed], we fully researched our new service request email process on our website. Unfortunately, we found a significant problem with the automated process that occurred for the month of June. Had it not been for [member name removed] complaint to Angie's List, we would not have discovered the problem. We have now corrected our internal process for detecting such problems and corrected the website problem. We sincerely regret that [member name removed] did not get a response from ECM and we do appreciate the time [member name removed] took in noting this complaint. Because of this, ECM will be providing [member name removed] for a coupon good for a free A/C Tune Up at the time of her choosing. Thank you for the opportunity to reply to this issue.

The price of East Coast Mechanical were reasonable. I talk to the actual owner quite a few times and we didn't have any problems whatsoever. My mom signed up with them, she has been in her home here for over 20 years. I just had them out not too long ago and I have to actually call them to schedule a tune-up for central air. They have very professional, very nice. I haven't had any problems, I think it was maybe close to 2 years for a washing machine, it is making some kind of noice, so I had someone come out and check it and it needed something to be replaced and so that was done and I had a couple of times with the garbage disposal. The only thing that she wasn't covered for was for the water heater. I just had someone out recently to check the central air because I have it set on 78 and I woke up one day and I saw that the temperature was like 83, it would just keep on rising, it got its highest like 87 and that's what the temperature is from the outside, it could have most likely be the same, so I had to wait almost maybe between 5 and 7 days, so it was just like, when the air was seen, I could hear it and feel it a little, but it wasn't coming out strong like really when you have your air-conditioner on that you could really feel the coolness and so when the tech came out, he checked it on, I guess he went outside to the side, he checked in here and he said it would take just a little time for it to generally get back, the temperature would go down. He made notes and he said that I need to schedule with someone to come out and do a tune-up. He said this should be done, checked every 5 years, but I thought they would have to replace the whole system. The guy that I was talking to says that has nothing to do with the central air with the adjusting of the heat or cold, so next week I am just going to call them and schedule the tune-up. When I called, there is sometimes I had to wait a couple of days for someone to come out. It is not really their fault, it is not that they were neglecting the situation, it was just that when you call kind of the same day to get service, most likely they are not going to be available because they have all their tasks already scheduled, I just have to wait another day for them to come. These people definitely know their specialty. They will tell you what the problem is, what needs to be replaced after years of use, they won't tell you anything more like a lot of companies out there are very scamful because they tell you more than what you actually called in for what has to be looked at or taken care of.

ECM thanks you for taking the time to provide our service with such compliments. We strive to provide service as soon as possible to all customers when they need it. Sometimes, however, due to weather conditions and the high demand for technicians and only so many technicians available to serve our customers, we can't be at service immediately. However, when those times occur when you must have someone, ECM will make every effort to provide you with a technician as soon as they are available to serve. Again, thank you for your comments, we look forward to serving you again in the future.

I had to write this because, in spite of controversial comments from users of this vendor in a reputable Vendor Recommender List, I chose to give this company a chance. I used them and had an extremely good experience. I was in the market to replace my 10 year old A/C unit and I wanted the efficiency of a 5 ton Lennox A/C, with a variable speed air handler and a 19,5 Seer rating. I am very handy but, because I am getter a little older, I am also a current contract holder with ECM. Since I have never had a problem with their service, I called them in to quote the job. I am also a subscriber of Angie's list and, after they bid the job and because of the size of this expenditure, I chose to do some further research on this company. I saw negative comments from a few customers and I called Angie's List to further explain their average rating for ECM. They explained that the ratings given by those who chose to comment comprised the average rating, I must admit, after that, I was a little reluctant to use ECM. After bringing in two other Angie's List, A rated, recommended companies to bid (both were very good, I might add), ECM's price remained competitive and compelling enough, by a long shot, with the bidspecs all comparable, to give them a little more consideration. I revisited the List's negative commenters and found that most, or all of them were unhappy ECM contractees (where there can always be a difference of opinion on what they're entitled to). I saw that all the positive commenters, who gave ECM an A rating, were people who had units installed by ECM and were very satisfied and, enthusiastically so. Secondly, I found the technician/salesman from ECM who came to my home and explained the various units was thorough, extremely knowledgeable (as were the gentlemen from the two other companies, I might add) but he was the most knowledgeable... and creative. After measuring and analyzing my home, he was the only one who prescribed a slightly different air handler to fit the area better, coupled with a different filtrating system that with a higher efficiency carbon filter and easier filter accessibility. I researched his recommendations and found that they were everything he said they were and were, while two inches shorter, not any less efficient than the air handler the other two bidders recommended. .I chose to give ECM a chance because of the professionalism of their Technician/salesman, his choice of equipment that fit my area better than those chosen by two other companies that bid the job and, as a result, ECM’s price, by being creative, was more competitive. I am very happy with my choice. The two technicians who came to install the unit were prompt, extremely professional, very accommodating, did a magnificent job and left the area spotless. As i said before, I am a handy person and like to do things the right way. This installation was as near perfect as possible. If I could have done the job (and I knew how), I could not have done it near as well. It is a beautiful job. It is clean, professionally finished, operates perfectly and, even, as a layman, I am so very pleased with the whole job when I look at it. I'm only 3 days out from the installation, but everything, so far, is working as promised. I love the unit. The house is very comfortable and even smells fresher. What makes this experience more satisfying is the fact that, after the unit was installed, the technician who sold me the unit was caring enough to drop by to inspect the installation, ask if we understood the operating instructions and saw to it that we were satisfied. I had a very good experience with ECM and, while I respect the information that can be retrieved from services like Angie's List, I firmly believe you have todig a little deeper when it comes to picking the right vendor for you. I was with East Coast Mechanical (ECM) from almost its inception, nearly 25 years. When the company was small, the service was good. I have always had a contract with replacement on all my appliances. Now, as the years have gone by, ECM has tried to get out of every replacement of appliances, and in some incidences, try to sell me parts I did not need. They will read their contract's fine print back to you, in order to get them out of replacing your appliances. Here are three such incidences: First, my house was three years old, and for three years in a row, their technician for my annual service call for my air conditioner would tell me that I had mildew and needed a new UVB:bulb. Otherwise, I would get sick if the mildew got into the ducts. The technician said that they saw mildew. Finally, I got a second opinion and found out that I didn't need this UVB bulb and had no mildew. After confronting their technician, he said that he received a commission for selling parts. Second, on a three year old refrigerator, a service technician told me that my ice-maker needed a replacement part costing $144.00, and that I would have to pay half of that expense. And once again, I obtained a second opinion, and was told that it was just fine and that some frost had accumulated. Finally, my major incident came this past holiday season (2013). My five-year old side-by-side refrigerator stopped working in the middle of the night and on a weekend. ECM advertises seven-day-a-week service. I called all Sunday, and finally, after many pleas, someone came at 4pm.After a 15 minute diagnosis, the technician told me that the compressor needed to be replaced. He said that someone would call me early in the morning, and that it would be fixed before noon. The next day, no one called me, and I called ECM repeatedly. Finally, they gave me a window of time, from 2-6pm, for a technician. They arrived at 7pm! This technician diagnosed my refrigerator as unrepairable. He used the exact "fine print" words on the back of the contract to diagnosis the problem: "Water Intrusion". He wrote these words as central in the final analysis. My son was here, and read the contract's fine print the day prior. He said to me, "water intrusion" is central to the exclusion, and to watch whether ECM would use this to avoid replacing or fixing the refrigerator. He was right, and ECM got out of their obligation and made my contract 'null and void'. Keep in mind, I had a full-service contract with replacement on all appliances. ECM also advertises that if they don't come in the time frame specified, they will pay you $50.00. In my case, they were an hour over this time frame (2-6pm, arriving at 7pm). ECM said that this advertisement did not apply to me. When you are waiting on the phone, they advertise "minimal waiting time for services", and "no more waiting on weekends". In my case, I waited 2 days, went through 30 bags of ice to salvage food, and mopped up water for 5 days until my new refrigerator was delivered. When confronting ECM, they answered me with demeaning explanations and insults from three top people, including a supervisor. EverythingI have stated above, they have on record and they admitted to all of this. However, I was told I had no recourse. This only added insult to my injury. The humiliation - not the money - was more than I could take. I want no one to suffer similarly at the hands of ECM.
Description of Work: Under terms of long-term service contract, ECM was contacted to repair my refrigerator

Everything was fine. I wasn't very happy with the price or the technician, but I was pleased with the outcome. The technician tried to upsell me on a service contract and applied some high pressure tactics. He had to make two trips and still hit me again with the upselling. The overall C is because of the price and technician.

Customer service crisis. Ripoff. Barbara in the warranty department is a piece of work and a total scumbag. Stay away.
Description of Work: They don't need my business. That's a direct quote from Barbara, warranty manager. We had an AC unit installed 13 months ago by ECM. Blower motor was bad, which was covered under warranty, but labor wasn't. They charged us $300 for 30 min of labor. Even the tech was embarrassed when he gave the quote! When I called the office, Barbara said that was the price and she didn't need our business. This was the day before thanksgiving. They are scumbags and I would avoid at all costs. If it wasn't the day before thanksgiving we would have.

Re seal second toilet tanks and replaced both toilets with new innards!!! perfect! in under an hour and cleaned up after himself. Plumber's name is Robert, friendly, thorough and quick.

He was very scary. He told me lie after lie after lie. If one of my kitchen appliances breaks, they are very nice and helpful. They have replaced parts. My refrigerator broke and they sent me a check to use towards a new refrigerator. I'm going to miss that but I can bring myself to do business with them anymore.
Description of Work: My air conditioner broke in the middle of a severe heat wave. I have a contract with ECM for all my appliances. Initially I called them; they might be able to fix it for free, according to my contract. Someone came out very quickly. At first, he said he knew exactly what was wrong but had to go outside to call his boss. He came back in and started taking it apart. Throughout this whole thing, he kept going outside to call his boss. He said something wrong with the amps on the circuit breaker which would cause a fire. Is was not true and wasn't dangerous. He was there for a long time and making several trips outside. He told me he wasn't going to put it back together because it wasn't safe. I have health problems and I have to have air conditioning. He insisted on selling me a new unit. They have a cheaper one and more expensive one. He tried to make me buy the expensive one. Most importantly, I had it checked out by another company and it wasn't unsafe, I just needed a new fan motor.

Cleared drain line and changed thermostat, as indicated above.
Description of Work: Came on 2 seperate occassions to work on my AC. First visit was in mid Sept, and they cleaned out a drain line that was clogged with algae. Tech was very nice and helpful, but did try to sell product- a cleaner and AC filters that are custom made. Did a thorough job. Second visit was on 10/14/13, a different technician changed the thermostat. i was not at home for that repair, but the person that was said the technician was fine and did a thorough check of the unit.

Response from East Coast Mechanical
[member name removed] is a former ECM Home Service Warranty Contract holder. We have no records of being called by [member name removed] this year at any time to perform an A/C Tune Up. Additionally, an ECM tune up at our special summer rate is currently $49.95, so there is no tune up that ECM performs this summer at a rate of $30. In Broward County where [member name removed] lives, there is another company called East Coast Services. This is NOT ECM, East Coast Mechanical, Inc. which is located in Boynton Beach, FL. Since ECM has not provided services to this customer this year, we believe this review was made in error and ask that it be removed.
