Description of Work: Tech was polite but unelpful. Told him about issues reported by home inspector. Despite the system not working (won't get colder than 75 degrees), he said to "give it a couple days" even though I'd already done so. He said there would be no discount if I called back for a follow-up even though he did nothing to attempt to address the issue on the first visit. Won't use again. |

Description of Work: Replacing your HVAC system can be a daunting task, but Joe at Polar Bear and his team made easier and less stressful than I could even have hoped for. They were extremely responsive; answered questions quickly and thoroughly. They gave me a variety of options from less expensive to very expensive so that I could see what I would be getting, or not getting. |I also liked the fact that Joe came by on the day of installation; even though I found out later that his team was more than capable to answer questions, having the person that I had been working with show up and walk through the whole installation process on that day was a confidence builder. |When the job was finished, they didn't immediately ask for final payment. We were able to live with it for the day and contacted the next day. Not a big deal, but anothe way that Polar Bear made the whole transaction more pleasant.

This company was fantastic. They were in and out so quick I didn't even notice that they were here. They were a very respectful company too. The service was exceptional and they did very quality work. They did scratch my floor up a little bit but when I called them to let them know, they were out the very next day to fix it for me with no hassle. I would recommend them to anyone.

I repeatedly asked Polar Bear if they could patched my A/C so it would last a little bit longer and they said it could not be done. They also told me that the air handler was completely rusted out and that there was no way I could save my A/C. So they wanted to charge me 6,500 dollars for a new system. This guy was very persuasive and almost got me to agree with buying a new one from him, but I didn't. In conclusion, I did not take his offer and after I hired another company to look at my A/C, they fixed it for way cheaper than Polar Bear was charging me. Polar Bear was just taking me for a bogus ride!
Description of Work: Polar Bear was here for a consultation visit only. My A/C was not working and I wanted it to be looked at to see what I should do to get it started again.

I was very happy with the work done. They were very quick, efficient, cleaned up the mess pretty well, and were very professional. I like everything that they did except all the dust, but that wasn't their fault. I would definitely use them again; they did an excellent job.
Description of Work: They put in central air conditioning. My house is approximately 1,800 square feet with three bedrooms and two and half bathrooms. We didn't have central air before and received a warranty with the new system.

Joe was great, prompt, thorough and communicative. Explained what the problem was and why it was happening. Wouldn't hesitate to hire him against. Very, very pleasant to work with. I was expecting the cost to be much more, not knowing much about a/c work, but it was lower than I expected and given that the weather was oppressive and I had two dogs at home during the day, I appreciated him working me into his very busy schedule.
Description of Work: A/C stopped cooling during heat wave. Called Polar Bear after neighbor referral and was able to get an appointment within a couple of days. Joe, the owner/operator did troubleshooting and found that the rooftop condenser was running but low on R-22 coolant charge. Adjusted coolant level, told me I had a small leak, common in rowhouses, but said it wasn't worth tracking because it's very expensive and since it was a very slow leak (probably there for years), best to just have coolant level checked and topped off once a year.

Perhaps the guy was having a bad day, but I had an extremely unpleasant conversation regarding getting an estimate for air conditioning. I live in an old DC row house so air conditioning is complicated. It's not easy to install central air so there are a variety of alternatives/approaches. I've gotten 2-3 estimates so far and each of them has totally different advice. When I started asking questions, the guy told me that he "had an engineering degree and had installed hundreds of units" and I shouldn't question his recommendations. Needless to say, I've moved on.

In both cases the work was done professionally and well. The service was friendly and efficient. The humidifier has performed well. It comes with both an automatic and manual setting capabilities, and they strongly recommended using the manual method. I was surprised by this, but it has worked out well. When they visited to fix the AC fan, they topped off my freon at no charge.
Description of Work: The company has been to my house twice. Once to install a new whole house humidifier, and another time to fix a problem compressor fan on my A/C.

We woke up at 5:00 am with an in house temperature of 47 degrees. Trying to get anyone to come was turning into a seemingly impossible task, we literally called 15 to 20 places. To have them come so quickly and take care of the problem was great.
Description of Work: Emergency call after the heat stopped working on February 6 (VERY COLD) 35 minutes after calling they came, got it to work overnight, and came the next day with the part to fix it! The part it needed was some sort of gage so it won't over heat.

It was easy to schedule a time to have their contractors come out. There were two guys (one guy who did the main work and the other guy was learning the ropes). They were prompt, cleaned up after themselves, and made sure I knew how to operate everything before they left. It only took them 1.5 hours from start to finish. Payment was made over the telephone to their home office and they were easy to work with as well. They credited me back $99 for the first visit Tom made to my house a couple weeks prior when he assessed the situation.
Description of Work: Had to replace a broken heating unit. The heat exchanger was cracked. Tom came out before and gave me a brief lesson on how heaters worked and what systems are good and what systems are bad. I got quotes from 2 other places and his was comparable, however, the other companies were using second tier heaters (I researched them on consumer reports). My heater is the smallest size (40,000 BTU).

I have an old row house with window unit a/c and was considering Unico or a similar system that would not involve ugly visible ductwork. Polar knew exactly want I wanted and did a traditional roof-mounted unit, with all ducting hidden in closets. True, the visible vents are regular rectangular grates, but I lost very little closet space and the system works well. When I had a minor leak, the company returned immediately to seal the gaps. Very pleasant to deal with. I don't believe they got a permit as they should (but understand this is common). They don't do plastering, so had to do this myself (around some of the vents). Generally very pleased with the service.

They diagnosed the problem incorrectly, the problem was the exhaust on the furnace. The technician seemed to be a novice and called his supervisor many times.
Description of Work: Our heat stopped working. The contractors thought it was due to a defective part and stated they would come back with the part the next day. They came with a part, not the specific one, but thought it might work, but didn't. Called supervisor and found out the part they needed the distributor wouldn't sell to them. So they were unable to help us, but didn't charge us.

I was concerned that they wouldn't honor the one year parts and labor furnace warranty, since I'd had a problem with my condensate pump running constantly after the February installation. They had charged me $300 to install a new one rather than fixing whatever might have been the new problem (I'd tried jiggling the float and everything). They said they'd only charge if there was a leak in the air conditioning pipes, not where they soldered the joints but in the part where it meets the condensor, which they had not installed. Fortunately there was no leak. The system just needed to be repressurized. The system is now running fine. Our house is cool and our system as efficient as it's going to get, with limited space for insulation and ductwork coming out near the floor rather than the ceiling. Be sure to get some aluminum foil tape (not duct tape, which comes off) and tape up the spaces between the duct joints though. Even if the sheet metal job looks great, air can leak.
Description of Work: After installation of a new furnace and AC coil (not condensor)in February, we were fine until AC season. A copper pipe from the condensor to the furnace was freezing white. The coil, as it turned out when I unscrewed the door, was caked with ice. Polar Bear said it's hard to pressurize a system for summer use in cold weather, so they would need to come out and add freon and check the pressure. This they did, and checked the temperature of the air in the furnace and coming out of the duct vents in the house. They even wrapped the pipe in some pipe insulation I'd bought at the local hardware store. They would willingly have come out the day after we called (even though it was the Memorial Day heat wave and they were busy with installations), but I could not be home that week to let them in.

Very good. The repairman arrived on time and did professional work. He explained everything he was doing, and the price was the same as I was quoted. He left the work area very clean in spite of having to create a great mess while doing the work.
Description of Work: Furnace overhaul. (Polar Bear does HVAC in addition to plumbing.) The repairman cleaned the furnace thoroughly, inspected it and replaced the gas pipe that was made of a material that was not up to code.

The $3240 price what Sears would charge us for a comparable new furnace (80% efficient, 2 speed fan), but we got a new air conditioning coil to replace the one they expected was rusted. (Sears tried to sell us on a more expensive 8 speed fan which does not save any heat and is only an advantage for lowering noise level), $500 for a humidifier, $299 to have them come out and replace the condensate pump which had worked fine until their installation but stayed on afterwards. After a clean, courteous, prompt installation, we now have a beautiful, clean sheet metal job, a quieter, more efficient, better sealed furnace, though the installer threw away the automatic outdoor humidity sensor without asking our opinion. I watched and asked questions as the installer removed all the old furnace parts--the old coil was just a bit dusty, the heating element was not cracked, there was no blockage. The new furnace had the same problem until we replaced the $100 thermostat. We spent $3939 for?
Description of Work: Neither plumbing nor water heaters, nor air conditioning, which their name would imply is their speciality. We called them out because our furnace blower was going on but no heat was coming out and the pilot light was lit. They noted some burnt wires in front of the furnace door which had been burnt since before we had this problem and recommended a new furnace since there seemed to be a blockage that had caused the flames to fly out from under the heating element. If they rewired for $1000-2000, they said, the same thing could happen again and we would be back where we were. After you read about the overall experience, you should feel comfortable hiring this professional company if you are absolutely sure you need a new furnace, but I would think twice about having them come out to troubleshoot a problem. After the installation was done, we still had only the blower fan working and heat only if the installer bypassed the thermostat and "hotwired" the furnace.
