They arrived on time, so I give them an A for punctuality. However, they are quite slick in how they run their business. First of all, I got a phone estimate from Nicole of $336 for the move. She spent a lot of time telling me how I would not be charged for this or that, so it sounded like a really good deal. I moved from a house to an apartment; however, I did not have a house full of furniture. There was no furniture in the basement at all; the move consisted of three bedrooms -- with only one complete set of furniture; a living room sofa and loveseat; one living room chair; a dining table and four chairs; and other small miscellaenous items. These people slow-walked through the entire move -- particularly Gino, the foreman, sitting down at my table for 45 minutes supposedly figuring up a final cost so that I could get cash rather than use a debit or credit card and be charged 5%. Gino took forever and in fact, never did give me a figure. I just went on to the bank and got out what I thought was far more than I would need. Anyway, Gino -- when he did work -- spent an inordinate amount of time wrapping furniture -- even pieces I told him not to bother to wrap. And he couldn't do two things at once. If I asked him a question, he literally dropped his hands and stopped working. At one point. I told Gino I was trying to keep the move under 5 hours. At that point he just dropped his hands (as usual), and said "Well, we can stop right now and just deliver what we already have on the truck. That will keep you within your time constraints." I said, "How about you wrap a little less and move a little faster?" Moving is already a stressful ordeal; and BR Movers just added to my stress. If they were the last movers on earth, I'd carry my stuff on my own back before I would use them again. I have complained to the licening agency in the District, as well as the Better Business Bureau. They need to be out of business!
Description of Work: Moved me approximately 7 miles from the original location.

I had something come up missing and asked the movers. I said that I was going to go to insurance if it wouldn’t show. The mover got very angry and said I am going to unpack everything in and leave it in the street. He tried to charge me double from the estimate the originally gave. This estimate I myself over projected high just to make sure. I was told I would get a refund if I didn't agree with the visual of the 20% deposit. Customer service wasn’t available when I called for the refund. I asked for a boss and he said I don’t have a boss. They were trying to get me to pay 60% cash a head of the move or they wouldn’t move it for the long distance. I had inquired 3 times with one person to make sure that we wouldn't be charged until the delivery and wouldn't have use them if I new this. He threatened me and my son. He slandered women. We ended up having to have the cops come out to help mediate the situation. They wanted to charge extra money for the stairs at the my place when they finally showed up to my sons house, this was already written in the contract.. He kept pressuring to charge more and more money for everything like a dresser that he was saying it wasn’t a normal size; it was. So, when I refused to pay more money he threatened to throw my stuff in the road again. Then, he decided to call the police because I wouldn’t pay before he unloaded my stuff because I didn't trust that wouldn't take off with it. He sat there and waited; when the police come they were like no we are talking to him (my son). The cop said we would have to pay them and then dispute this later, so we can get our stuff. The police had to tell him to take it up the stairs because he refused. He said he would unload the stuff and charge for an hour labor and packing materials. He ended up charging me time because it changed from a long term to a short term which I disputed. It ended up costing more than doing the long-term move. I had my son there because I was afraid; he even started stuff with the police. I finally got a phone yesterday of them looking into all the problems we have had. DO NOT use them they are very dishonest and he claimed to be part owner even though it wasn't. They also said it was over 500 cu. ft. when the stuff equated to 200 cu. ft.; to prove his point he moved everything to the middle of the truck and piled it up and took pictures to create fraud. There were lies, fraud, assault in my experience with them.
Description of Work: I have used them for a long distance move.

They gave us an estimate by phone of what the move would cost, taking into consideration a detailed description of all the items to be moved. They attracted us with a low estimate and even giving us several discounts. The day of the move the foreman told us that they had given us a very low estimate and the the move would cost much more. At that point, we had no choice. He asked us to sign like 10 different documents before they could start loading the truck. We were not able to read each document and we were not given copies. When we reached our new destination they told us that the cost was double of what had been estimated and we still needed another full truck load to go. They also demanded full payment or they would not unload the truck. When we tried to complain with the person that gave us the initial estimate, she was no where to be found and we asked to talk to the owner, who was very rude. We should have listened to the many bad comments about this company. Our recommendations is to keep away from them.

The service was great but the company is a rip-off. First, the positive: The driver and crew were very courteous and professional and did a great job moving my items. The truck was neat and clean. Now the negative: The company does not do a good job of explaining the chargers when you get your estimate. When I spoke to the person on the phone, I was told I would be charged for packing supplies. I said the only thing I wanted packed was the china cabinet to make sure it did not break. I was told I would be charged $25 to pack the China Cabinet. When the crew showed up they had a long detailed list of the cost for all the packing supplies. The crew WRAPPED everything with shrink wrap and put aTON of packing tape around it. I told them not to shrink wrap the items except the China Cabinet. The put a ton of tap around everything even when it is not necessary. I had a plastic cabinet and had taped the doors shut with packing tape. They put more of their tape on top of mine. They also use an absorbent about of bubble wrap, card box boxes etc. The bottom line is they use an absorbent about of packing supplies which results in your final price is MUCH higher than the estimate. The company charges a 5% surcharge on any Credit card transaction. This is the company policy and is listed on the estimate and the contract, but I did not notice. The person did not tell mw that when I paid with a credit card. I later learned that Visa and MasterCard prohibited surcharges and emailed the company to request a refund. The office person told me it was the company policy but because they wanted the customers to be happy she would talk to her manager about giving me a refund. She later called me back and told me the surcharge had been refunded. Another minor annoyance was only one person spoke English, everyone else spoke Spanish. If you search the internet for this company you will see nothing but negative reviews, especially about their pricing. They have an ‘F’ rating on the Better Business Bureau website. I don’t know way they feel the need to rip people off. They do great work but I will never use them again or recommend them.

Other than the price and the movers arriving late, the move was smooth.
Description of Work: The movers were estimated to arrive between 8-10am. They arrived at 11:30. They did call at 10:00 to let me know they were arriving late. However, I received two different reasons as to why the movers were late. Prior to service they had me fill out a contract, but left a lot of the information blank. Once they started working, the movers worked diligently. However, using their packing materials, the move was more than double the estimated price, including being overcharged for some items.

I did not want BR Movers to pack most of the items that needed to be "packed" and requested that they drop of a certain number, and sizes, of boxes the Wednesday before the Sunday move date. They repeatedly did not drop off the boxes despite my calls - this was their strategy to have their own guys pack thereby adding to the number of billable hours for the move. They arrived a half-hour late to start, not a deal breaker. HOWEVER, as noted above, 2 of the 3 guys were no taller than 5' and were not strong; they did not have the physical attributes to move household items in an effective way. RIP OFF. I told the boss man to bubble wrap certain items - he argued saying he'd wrap them in blankets! Well, no. Certain items needed to be bubble wrapped - guess what? Items were broken. Pictures? BR MOVERS force packed up to 3 and 4 framed pictures together WITHOUT protection inbetween the framed pictures thereby causing damage to the frames. BR MOVERS broke a leg off of an antique desk and tried to deny it. There are more gosh-awful things to tell you, but I do not think I need to add more convincing evidence that BRMovers are bad news. Spread the word: BR MOVERS ARE BAD NEWS FOR YOUR WALLET.
Description of Work: Contracted for residential home moving. DO NOT HIRE BR MOVERS. BR MOVERS are DISHONEST AT EVERY LEVEL. What a fool I was to deal with a "discount mover" instead of selecting a firm that would give and honor a cap on moving expenses. BR Movers "sounds" good, but do not be fooled because it will cost you not only double what you expect to spend based upon their estimate, but it will cost you in terms of broken and damaged property, as well as in starting off with good relations with your new neighbors. BR Movers does NOT visit your home, but base their estimate on what you tell them. (THIS SHOULD BE A WARNING SIGN TO YOU). BRMovers confirmed via email the items I told them needed moving; fine. BR Movers estimated 5 hours, but gave me a figure of up to 7 hours as an outside cost. I had a 2 level/2 bedroom, 1350 square foot home. BR Movers said they would send 3 men and a truck w/an elevator lift. The 3 men...2 of the men were no taller than 5' tall and were slightly built - that is NO POWER. The 3rd man was the boss man; he was 5'3" and no tower of strength. SIZE MATTERS. The lack of strength and abiilty added significantly to the billable hours of this move. The move from my former residence to my current residence was all of 2 blocks. It took these guys 8 1/2 hours to get the truck loaded; it would have taken longer, but at that point it was 6:30 pm and I told them to leave the remaining items and drive the 2 blocks to the new residence. (And by the way, I had my newphews there to help pack!) The new residence was a 3rd floor walk up. This transpired from 7 pm to 10:30 pm on a Sunday night - what a way to start off with new neighbors! Because all of my belongings were not out of my former residence by the end of the day, the landlord billed me for March rent!

The movers were 1.5 hours late, which didn't bother me horribly. They went right to work and speedily loaded the truck. The guy who was managing the process was fine. The pricing is what became the real problem. First, when the movers arrived, I requested an additional stop to drop off one piece of furniture for a friend - it was only three blocks away. They said it was fine, but did not tell me there was an additional $175 charge for the stop, although I fully expected to pay for the additional time, I wasn't informed of the additional charge until I went to settle my bill. Second, about half way through the loading of the truck I noticed they were wrapping EVERYTHING with plastic/blankets - even crappy stuff that didn't need it. I looked at the price list closer - turns out every item they wrap costs $15! I put the kabash on it, but much of the damage had been done. Third, he added my total up incorrectly and overcharged me by $100, even with the "discount" I received after disputing the extra stop charge. All in all, the service was fine, the movers worked quickly, and they were accomodating, but my $300 estimate ballooned to $1000, leaving me broke and feeling like I was completely taken advantage of. Conclusion: Do not use this moving company.

Did not go well. Even though we provided an accurate list of things we moved, they increased the price on us the day that we moved. The initial estimate was $3000, the highest of all online bids. We took that one because we figured they were probably being as honest as possible but we were wrong. The day of the move, they showed up 3 hours late and brought an extra laborer which they said they'd charge us extra for. Then after everything had been loaded into the truck came the $2000 'bump'. I asked them to explain the sudden increase in price. They said that we had under-estimated the size of our inventory, charged us $250 for the 'extra' truck they had to bring in, said there was 14 hours (even though the move started at 11:00 am, finished at 9:00 pm), and oh there was the hidden 8% fuel surcharge. I find it hard to believe that any local move (mine was less than 60 miles) would take 14 hours. I had a 4 bedroom single family house with garage belongings and we had already done most of the packing. Do they mean to tell me that they expected to still be unloading items at 1:00 am the next morning in their warehouse. Only took 3 hours to empty my house and the warehouse is 1 hour away. So I decided to do the rest of the move myself (moving my 1500 cu ft of stuff into my new house)... guess what!!! It's $380 for me to get my stuff out of the warehouse. Not only will they charge me more to get my stuff out, but they won't even load the truck up or help me do it. Now, if they think their pricing is all fair, then thats cool, but should all be up front. "Sir, if you decide to move your stuff out of our warehouse yourself, there will be a minimum $380 charge. Also, there is a 8% fuel surcharge." Should have told me before they loaded up all my stuff, especially if they knew it'd be more than a $200-400 difference from the original estimate. And don't tell me they had no idea it'd be a higher charge. As a side, this was done via an online company which we tried to contact to work out the surcharges, etc., but now they won't even return our calls. Anyway, I got some volunteers to help me move on a Saturday but guess what, warehouse is closed on the weekends. There is no way for me to ask friends to take off of work. So I gotta hire people off the street to help me on a Friday... risky.
Description of Work: Moved 4 bed room home belongings from MD to VA. 1/2 the stuff went into their warehouse. The other 1/2 went to my new temporary apartment(We decided to get a temp apt. while looking for a house). Most packing was already done by me and my wife. Due to the nasty cost increase surprise, we can't afford to risk paying them to move the rest of our stuff from their warehouse to our new house in VA. They said it'd cost about $1000 but I'm not risking it, could easily be increased to $2000 or $3000.

I just joined Angie s List so this is a bit post dated. I am about to move again and was looking for a mover when I found the card from this company. It reminded me of the issues I had with them when they moved my property in September, 2006 and thought I would post now. BR Movers were very good on the phone and responsive before the move. I called them twice the week of the move to confirm time and availability. When the day came, they were over an hour late and short a crew member. They also had no idea how to move a large bookshelf or to see if any of it could be disassembled, which it could. They tried moving it down three flights of stairs which was impossible for this monster which is a double bookshelf. Ultimately I noticed the screws holding the ornate top and bottom and used my power tools to remove them, it then fit in the elevator. When they got to my new home, I saw them ROLLING my heavy glass dining room table (round) down the hall and sure enough it had chipped. They also broke four of my picture frames. Though I did all my own packing, I am a photographer and package very expensive pieces for cross country shipping all the time. Finally, what was supposed to take four hours ended up taking well over eight and the charge increased accordingly, partly because they miscalculated my property when the estimate was given, partly because they were incompetent at moving and partly because they did not have enough personnel supporting the move. I called to work out a claim, but ultimately once I got a hold of someone, I never filed a claim due to the fact that at 60 cents per pound, there was no way it would have paid for a new table top or been worth the fight and time for the picture frames/glass.
Description of Work: Provided moving service and packed large objects such as dining room table, 52 large screen TV, etc. Moved my property from a one bedroom apartment in DC to a two bedroom apartment in Arlington.

My items were not delivered on the time schedule that I was to have them in Atlanta on July 2 or 3. They didn't call so I called on Tuesday and they had not even started the trip. When I talked to them they said that they would deliver on the 5th and said they would call. I did not hear from them at all, so on the 5th am they said that they would be here about 8 pm which was impossible for me ( I stated that late evening was not possible from the start). He said that they would charge me double if I was not there and they would continue on to Florida and heaven knows when they would deliver my stuff. I said I can't be there so he said he would call the boss. I called him and he said we will make it earlier, as of 3 no one had called. At 10:30 they called yelling and calling me bad names and had not called to alert me of the new time. After dealing with them for a hour on the 5th we agreed to meet at 10:00 so they called at 9:45 yelling where are you, I was staying at another location.
Description of Work: They moved me from DC to Atlanta.

Response from BR MOVERS
While BR Movers desires for every customer to have a pleasant move, there are sometimes unforeseen circumstances. We has never and will never place our customers in a sort of "hierarchy" based on the cost of their move. The cost of the member's move is in no way correlated with the customer service experience. The contract clearly states that the customer is given a window of delivery that is 4 to 7 days from the customer's earliest date of availability. This does'nt mean that the earliest date of availability will be the date of delivery, but rather, the beginning of the window. The member's items were delivered on July 6th, 2007 - well within the window of delivery. This is always made clear, but we are sorry for any communication errors that may have occurred. We apologize that the member feels she received unsatisfactory customer service. We strive for every employee to continuously provide top of the line customer service! While we will continue to strive for this, we will not be providing any sort of refund for bad customer service. It is BR Movers policy to process all claims or disputed charges that may happen in order to give cash compensation to our customers - but never as a "remedy". If the member provides us with proof of any invalid charges that amount to $250 in total, we will be happy to work with her to resolve this issue. We hope this issue is resolved in a timely fashion to both parties' mutual satisfaction, and will take the customer's complaint to heart.
