It turns out Lowes uses vendors to do the work for them, although when they come out they are wearing Lowes logo gear. The actual vendor was wolf flooring, which is actually based somewhere in the 303 area code, but they have one or more work crews based in CS. During the $50 'measure', we asked about some things that we would like done with the floor, and were told no problem. Including putting the baseboard back on when they were done (we took it off, but a nail gun makes those go back on so much quicker), and having a new 'kick' board put in under one of the cabinets where it was currently covered in carpet. After the measure, we got an estimate from lowes, but no quotes for the extra work, so we asked for them to add it on. They did go ahead and add $55 to put the moulding back on. Since my wife and I were sort of tag teaming this, we didn't notice they forgot to deduct the $50 measure fee from our final bill. Paid for entire job, and scheduled the guys to come out and install the floor. Since we didn't have a huge number of sq ft on the project, the vendor themselves picked up all the supplies. The estimate had a 'required' three labor hours of floor prep even though we were ripping out the old flooring. My guess was they expected we weren't going to do a great job ripping out the floor, but the only 'floor prep' they did was resweep the floor. Which was disappointing, but my master bath was going to be a pain, alot of cuts, and some angles, etc, so I didn't complain about the 3 hours of floor prep. The weather was kind of crappy the first day of the two day job. Vendor didn't show up till afternoon on the first day, which was multi hours late, but they did call and say that they still had to run down to lowes to pickup the supplies for the job. They then informed me that they had to use my garage otherwise the backerboard would be ruined. Which no one had bothered to mention to me. So I had to push outside a partially disassembled motorcycle to make room for them. They did put down drop cloths for all thier cutting, but EVERYTHING in the garage including my classic mustang convertible was covered in backboard and tile dust. I was really annoyed that no one mentioned that they needed to use my garage beforehand and I could have picked up and covered things up before they got there and not made as huge of a mess. Next time I am telling anyone too bad, and they can set up on the porch if they need to be out of the rain. The first day (really half day) went quite slowly, and they were doing the hardest area which is the master bathroom, and had it about 3/4 finished. They left thier tools set up in my bedroom to return the next day, not a huge deal but it might irritate some. The arrived at a reasonable time the second day and just barely finished on time that day. But they told me that reinstall baseboard wasn't on thier work list, so they couldn't do it for me. From some people who have done tile before, they mentioned that unless they were using rapid set mortor (my estimate and supplies only included regular motor) , they should not have grouted the same day as they laid the tile, but they did do that, but it seemed to work out okay. The tile job inself looked good except for my comments that follow, and looking at the work that went into it, I was glad I didn't try to do my master bath myself. My only problem with the finished tile work was that they didn't do anything about the transition between the carpet outside the bathrooms and the tile they just laid. The backboard + mortor + tile was higher than the carpet + pad next to it. There was also a cut tile edge at the transistion that was very visible, and would probably have started chipping if I hadn't done anything. That and I had to figuire out a way to put the baseboard back on as well. So to finish the job, I had to go down and buy a new kick board for cabinet I mentioned early on, and I bought a cheap harbor freight nail/staple gun to make the baseboard install go easier, and I had to go down and buy a transition piece from lowes to cover the transition. So I was a bit irritated, They covered my classic car in grit, and there was work left over when they were done that cost me money and time to finish. The whole reason for having someone else do it was that I didn't have time to do all this myself. So I go down to lowes to return some left over tile (kept a few in case of damage), and a spare hardi backer board, and ask for my $50 measure fee back, and the $55 baseboard install fee back. The tile and backer board return was easy as always. But there never seemed that the right person was around to help me get the other money back. But I must have triggered something since the vendor then started calling me to come back out and install the baseboard, but it was too late, I already had it put back on. So after three phone calls, and three physical trips to lowes where no one could help us fix the measure fee and baseboard install fee, we called down and asked to speak to the General manager about it. He resolved it by crediting us back some more product return to make up the monitary difference just to get us out of his hair. So in the end, I have a decent looking floor, and a trashed garage, and a hassle to deal with finishing the work and big hassle asking for a refund on work not done.
