All the work was done in a timely manner, sometimes working around the spring weather, and we are very satisfied with the result. All the work was done promptly and professionally. When they finished they did an excellent job of cleaning up. If you need deck work, design, build, or refinish -- you won't find a better company than Decks by Schmillen. .

I interviewed and received bids from three deck contractors for my project. Doug Schmillen was the most knowledgable and experienced contractor on my bid list. He was very helpful in explaining the design and material choices but did not steer me toward any particular option. To my surprise, the demolition and construction was completed very quickly (3.5 days). The construction crew of four worked very efficiently together. Their work ethic and pride in their work was apparent from start to finish. They cleaned up the work site each night . I am very happy with the project results. The new deck is very sharp looking and has received multiple compliments from our neighbors. I would highly recommend Decks by Schmillen to others.

From start to finish, Doug was great to work with. Very professional. Our deck was torn down and rebuilt in 5 days. We collaborated with him on what the best materials would be to install, and were very happy with his recommendation. Now all of our neighbors are jealous!

We noticed our deck seemed to be pulling away from our house. We had 3 deck companies come in and give us estimates, none seemed confident in why it was happening or how to fix it & their ideas covered the spectrum from jacking it up & attaching it to the house to starting from scratch. Doug came in and checked to make sure the deck had been permitted when it was built and then came back with his son to figure out what to do. They came up with a good plan and fixed it quickly and safely so now our family can enjoy our deck without worrying about safety. I would absolutely recommend them to friends or use them again.

We chose Decks by Schmillen because of the high ratings they had on Angie's List, and I was not disappointed. Decks by Schmillen may well be the most professional contractor I've ever worked with, and I've had some pretty great contractors here in the Springs. After inspecting the original deck, Doug quickly scheduled a temporary repair to a broken step that resolved what was becoming a safety issue. Doug and his crew were extremely responsive and punctual. In fact, we ended up being bumped up in the schedule for the deck replacement. Doug was also extremely forthcoming, helping me find the right design for my needs and not trying to sell me needless upgrades. I did decide in the end to go with his suggestion to expand the deck by two feet which did increase the cost, and now that it's done I can really see how much the extra space helps. We discussed the pros and cons of metal frames versus treated frames, composite versus redwood decking, etc. and eventually I settled on redwood decking on a treated frame with matte black metal balusters and post caps that just look phenomenal. You get a very real sense that these guys are craftsman with a deep pride in their work. Another thing that blew me away was how immaculate they kept the job site. Every evening they cleaned up everything even down to the lumber scraps, which was a real plus given that we have two children and a dog. When they left at the end of the job there was no evidence that any demolition or construction had happened...except for the spectacular new deck. They worked around a full hot tub and did absolutely no damage to the house or surrounding property. I would recommend Decks by Schmillen to anyone without hesitation.

They cleaned the deck, did all of the staining and left. Absolutely no problem. We have used them for years. This time they had to repair a floor board that had warped. No problem, they just got it done!

Contacted Doug Schmillen as his company did some major deck work for me a couple of years ago. Because this was a small job, we left the timing open-ended and he just worked it in as he had available crew time. All the work was completed professionally and all issues with the deck and stairs were resolved. The area was completely cleaned up when they left. His guys noticed some corrosion in the deck lighting wiring in the areas they were working. As a courtesy, they reconnected all the connections for the entire deck eliminating all corrosion issues. They really went above and beyond.

Doug was very thorough with pro's and con's of different deck/railing materials so we had what we needed to make good choices. Sent enough workers that installation went quickly and they were very professional, focused and timely. We actually enjoyed working with this company!

Doug is a cheerful great guy, as are his team. This was a huge rebuild and deck expansion done in conjunction with our getting stucco on the outside of the house. He worked timing with the stucco people for us, met us at the deck supply company to help us choose a composite product, and he even knew where the overstock product was kept so we could have a great product at an amazing price--this was awesome because we needed to cut costs so we could afford a shade structure for the deck because of the high sun exposed area where our deck sits. We got the deck of our dreams--and it was worth it. He is booked out, but he and team are worth waiting for, to be sure. Just call, he will come and do an evaluation, a drawing is submitted with an estimate that you sign and agree to, and then depending on his line-up you wait until your turn is up. He does adjust for weather etc. He also advises on square footage that might be more useful--doesn't just re-do what's there for no reason. We had a ton of SQ that was unused and he advised us to move it to a better area and to widen one spot with a bump out. The end result was a more useful deck space and a more secure house--as the moved deck portions were next to a window where people could break in, now no one can reach those windows and our deck is wider and nicer. We've loved our summer on this deck. He matches paint, stain, uses quality products and is really committed to you having the deck of your dreams that will last not 'just a deck'. We would use him again but our deck is so quality that it will be about 15 years before we need to call, if that. He also has an amazing website and the people who work with him at the decking store who sell the product really respect him which says a lot too.

This is the 4th time I've used Decks by Schmillen. Doug and his crew are always honest, good at communicating, AND they do excellent work. They take good care of my deck, and I'll call them again next time.

The project went very well. Doug was very professional and knowledgable about the entire process. He took the time to work closely our local Regional Building Department to ensure that they were following all the requirements to make the deck and deck cover safe and stable. The recommendations on composite decking materials and the stain options for the posts were all of very good quality and beauty. The guys that work for Doug all did a fabulous job on the building project. Doug's son Keith runs the crew and was onsite everyday of the project. This made us feel very confident in Doug's company knowing that his son was running the show and in contact with Doug on the entire project. They were clean and timely in performing their job dutites. We had some last minute requests... who doesn't?! that they were able to accomodate and make the necessary changes to our contract to meet our requests. Ultimately, we have a beautiful covered composite deck that we will enjoy for many years! Thank you Doug with Decks by Schmillen for a wonderful deck, deck cover and job well done!

It all went very smoothly. The power washing was very thorough. The repair of the deck step cost a bit more than estimated but the carpenter discussed it with me first and showed me where we had more rot than we thought. The repair and the deck staining was accomplished in one day. They did a meticulous job, cleaned up thoroughly and were very careful not to damage my plants. Having it done by the pros saved us a ton of time and mess. I'm happy with the end result!

They started the work ahead of schedule and completed the job within one week. The finished deck is actually as proposed.

Doug Schmillen was very helpful with great suggestions as to the new deck design and then overseeing his crew's subsequent construction, which was excellent. My experience with Decks by Schmillen was superb - I couldn't recommend them more highly.

Quote did not cover poured concrete which was half the job needed. No one contacted us for concrete work and when I asked for drawings of the proposed work I was told it would cost $100 to get those with that cost going towards the total if we chose them.

Was very happy with Doug and he is extremely knowledgeable about all different types of decks and different products on the market. We had major hail damage to our home due to a 43 minute hail storm - yes 43 minutes of continuous hail. We have two composite decks - we decided to clean and paint one of them instead of replacing it. Not sure how much I like the composite decking paint --- will know this summer though. They did a great job applying it - just not sure how durable paint on a composite deck will hold up. I would highly recommend Doug - very honest. We chose Doug due to his A rating on Angies list and his A+ on the BBB and his customer satisfaction. Our next deck job - we live in Colorado what can I say - it is not a will but a when - we will have Doug back out.

Doug and his crew did a fantastic job, we couldn't be happier with the finished product. Doug was very easy to work with, listened to what we wanted, offered suggestion, and was very upfront with regards to cost based on design choices. Keith and the crew were very professional, respectful and fast workers. I highly recommend them to anyone needing deck work and will use them again if I ever decide to modify our front deck.

Doug worked with us to come up with a design that would provide us with a larger and more interesting deck and pergola and would fit the existing landscaping. We never felt rushed as we worked through several challenges. Doug, at times, also pointed out building code requirements that needed to be considered. Due to the number of customers lined up through the summer, there was a wait until it was time for the installation of our deck, but it was worth the wait. Keith and his team were very particular about the details and built the deck according to the design. We're very happy with the deck and enthusiastically recommend Decks by Schmillen.

They did a very professional job. The results far exceeded my expectations. I really cannot think of anything to criticize. His process pays attention to all the details. I expect this deck to last much longer than the original deck that came with the house.

I was extremely pleased with Decks by Schmillen. I contacted the company via phone and was contacted back by the Owner Doug. He came by the house and spent quite a bit of time with me going over their process, the materials they use etc. I felt that he really took the time necessary to make sure all of my questions were answered. I received a quote shortly after and my wife and I decided to use the company. A rough date based on projects currently underway was set. In the meantime, Doug came by several times to measure the distance from our Home to our fence line to make sure we could extend the new Deck out as far as we wanted to. He brought by a Stain Color Catalogue for my Wife to select our Stain from. He also showed my wife the railing she had chosen to make sure she liked it. He also brought by a Redwood 2x6 with about 12 different stains on it so she could see what they looked like. This helped her make her decision. Once the project started the work proceeded quickly. The initial demo/construction was done over 3 days to completion. The sanding staining was delayed by Rain but once the weather was clear but crew was right back to finish it off. One of the top rails had a split in it and I showed this to Doug. They left this piece unstained and Doug came by personally and replaced the board (14' long) free of extra charge. The Deck is complete now and looks fantastic. The quality of work really shows and I expect this Deck to last a very long time. I would recommend Decks by Schmillen to anyone needing Deck work done.

The deck was completed per the proposal, all permits were obtained and all inspections were completed. Doug's crew was punctual about getting to work and working all day. The workmanship on the decking is very good, Doug uses a rubber type membrane to protect the support joists from water. The weather caused some slight delays but nothing major. There was also an issue when one of the ledger board lag bolts pierced an interior drain line. Doug obtained a plumber who was able to fix the drain. The workmanship on the deck railing is acceptable, there are small items that I've found during the last year that I attribute to "trying to get done quickly". i.e. a screw fastening the railing to the ballister assembly is stripped, and the ballister assembly doesn't fitt tight to the railing. The railing corners are joined by a rather large screw diagonally through the joint that caused some splitting(I replaced this with pocket screws under the railing which got everything back in line). Doug is easy to work with, listens to your ideas and provides good feed back. He is responsible and dependable.
