The guys showed up when promised and worked all day. They kept me updated and protected my wood floors, and cleaned up after themselves. In installing the new furnace, they also fixed the flue coming from my water heater so it is up to code, and sound-insulated the furnace intake. The new furnace has variable speed as well as a setting that just circulates air to keep it clean. I can't wait to see the new gas bills this winter, and will get a $300 city of Palo Alto and $100 Trane rebate, and also qualify for the 30% tax credit thanks to ARRA. They also hauled out two old water heaters (including a 40 year old one that was still full of water and had to be emptied with a bucket first) as well as the old furnace. This was all from a basement that has access only through a hatchway in the bottom of a closet. All in all a great deal, and I am very happy with the work.
Description of Work: I had four estimates for this job and A&H was about $1000 lower than the others and had great reviews on Angie's list, so I went with them. I had them install a new Trane XV95 high efficiency furnace and Aprilaire media air cleaner to replace my very old, non-air filtering furnace.

Overall everything went very smoothly. I have an old home (1946) and wanted to add central A/C, eave vents and attic fan. My furnace did not need to be replaced. This is a group of people that all seem to work very well together and each knows exactly what their job is. All very professional and punctual.
Description of Work: Had central A/C, eave vents and attic fan installed.

Got the quote only. Did not have them do the work.
Description of Work: I asked A&H for a quotation to replace my existing furnace and install a new air conditioning unit on my roof. I called on 4/22 and got an appointment for the very next day. Dale Phelps was so prompt (I had read about his punctuality here) and I could figure out what time it was based on the Dale ringing the door bell. He came across as a very honest guy. He gave me all details that I needed. The amount he quoted was less for installing in my patio, but to install on the roof, he estimated another 1,400 dollars, which put their quote on the higher end of all the quotes I got. So I did not go with A&H for the install, but as far as my interaction with Dale, I would rate them an 'A'.

For the past several years, we have had to replace the coolant for our upstairs airconditioning unit. At first, we did not believe that there were any problems, but by the third summer, we suspected a leak. However, by the time we realized it last summer, we could not find anyone who had time to troubleshoot the problem. This year, we decided to address the problem before we actually needed to cool the house. A&H came recommended to us by both Angie's list and through friends. We called them for an estimate. They provided a very complete estimate, providing two estimates for 1) no serious leak, fixable and 2) leak that could not be fixed. They were extremely professional and responsible. They assessed the problem and we felt they were very thorough in identifing the problem. They did not attempt to sell us an overpriced solution. They arrived on time, were tidy, and very professional in installing the new system. They kept us informed during the entire process.
Description of Work: A&H inspected current air conditioning system for coolant leaks. Upon finding a leak on both the outside hose as well as in the coil on the unit in the attic, it was determined that we needed a replacement system. They removed the old unit and installed a new air conditioning and heater for our upstairs. They conducted numerous tests to ensure that there was no leak in the interior tubing. They enlarged the intake vent and installed a new outflow vent to improve the air flow. The technician even fixed a leaky outdoor faucet while he was working on the unit outside. They brought the downstairs unit to code.

Found them on Angie's List and everything was true about them! Professional, prompt and accurate. No hard sell for other products. Got a ballpark figure on installing a new A/C system after he was able to get some information and look at my house. They'll definetely have the inside track on any future work that I do.

Everything concerning A & H Heating and their work exceeded my expectations. Out of 3 vendors, A & H had the lowest cost. A & H Heating started the job on time every day, and in the end, finished on time, and on budget. Keep house and work area very clean. A & H Heating was very helpful in producing the required paperwork that is needed for the rebates and tax credits. The installation looks extremely clean and professional and the new furnace and A/C both work great and are very quiet.

This is my 3rd time using A&H. After air would not heat or cool, Reinhart came out and found freon leaks in both my air handler and condenser. The condensor needed a new cap and the air handler needed a new coil. Dale gave me quotes on both replacing the coil and installing a brand new air handler and answered all my questions on the work. I decided to have the coil replaced and Reinhart came out to my house with Manuel and showed him where the work needed to be done. While Manuel did most of the work, Reinhart was here throughout the day to help and check on the progress. They were professional, and explained the work in detail, showed me the old rusted parts and where the leak was occuring and cleaned up fully after they were done. I would recommend and use them again.

I was comparing this company to another "A" company. I called and scheduled with A&H. Then the other company had a published special for furnace cleaning. I called to find out the cost for 2 furnaces and it was the same cost, twice. So, I called A&H back and talked to them to understand their costs. It was a service call of $80 for approx an hour of time. A&H came on time. Checkout the noisy furnace first, let me know the filter was "fried" and custom made me a new one from materials in their truck. They honestly answered that the noise was the metal contracting and that there was nothing to do, and let me know about how much life was left in the furnace. The second furnace needed just a filter cleaning. Both were checked out in an hour for $80. This was less than the advertised special for just one furnace. I was a happy customer and will consider them when it is time to replace those old furnaces!
Description of Work: I needed two furnaces cleaned and inspected. One was making a "freight train" sound upon startup in the mornings.

The job was fairly difficult, and they handled it perfectly. The new furnace is in a different location than the old one. Also the A/C unit is in a different location. Other remodeling was being done (new roof, etc) so they had to return a number of times. The AC unit was installed 6 months after the furnace.

Furnace wouldn't turn on. Called A & H based on recommendations from Angie's List. Scheduled an appointment for 2 days later. I then had to leave town on short notice, so I rescheduled for the following week, and then was delayed returning from my trip, so I had to reschedule again, also on short notice. Given the fact that I rescheduled twice, each time with less than 24 hours notice, the guys at A & H were very understanding & patient, and gave me no grief about it whatsoever, which I thought was great. They also gave me a 2 hour window (12:00 pm-2:00 pm) for the service, which is better than a 4-hour window many other services provide. I finally was able to be home & Ryan came out to inspect the furnace. He arrived promptly at 12:10 pm, so I didn't have to sit at home waiting and I appreciated that. He was casual & friendly, and asked me if I had a good trip back. He checked out the furnace, and seeing nothing wrong with the unit, he checked out the thermostat. He immediately found that the thermostat was mis-wired (I have no idea how that could have happened!?). He rewired it in just a few seconds, and my furnace clicked on. He took another look at the furnace to make sure the flames were even & that the blower came on, and we were done! I was extremely pleased with how quickly Ryan was able to diagnose the problem. He also recognized how old my furnace was & suggested replacing it soon, and even pointed out the asbestos insulation around it, letting me know that I'd have to have someone come out & abate it when I replaced the furnace. Most of all, I was very grateful for how easy A & H made it for me to reschedule twice in a row, and how patient and understanding they were about the matter. They arrived promptly, found & fixed the problem quickly, and overall it was a very good experience, and I'd happily call them again.

The estimator was very good. I had another company come out after he did, and they told me I had asbestos in my ducts which would require a special crew to remove. A & H didn't mention asbestos, so I asked them to come out again, and they happily did, and confirmed the asbestos. They were also very good about later answering my various questions. The install crew was pretty good, though they could have been cleaner with drywall dust/debris coming down from the ceilings, and I have a few small drill holes in my ceiling that they didn't patch. Test holes maybe? Our master bedroom still generally feels colder than the rest of the house, but the main family room/dining room/kitchen/laundry that was always cold is cold no more.
Description of Work: We had them install new ducts and ceiling vents and install an a/c unit.

Call them on Monday, and they said would not able to get to it until Tuesday morning. Came on Tuesday morning as schedule, check the furnace and told me that I forget to close the lower panel doors, replace the door and charged for $80. I know the $80 is the minimum for a service call, but I think he should at least try to do more, like clean out the furnace or may even check the whole heating unit to make sure everything is working fine. Instead he took the money and ran. Did not spend more the 10 minutes.
Description of Work: Heating system would not turn on. A & H Heating came and just close the front panel and charge me $80. Did not perform any other checkup/tuneup on the heater.

I called and left message with A&H Heating. Dale returned my call promptly. He gave me an estimate by phone based on the hazard notice and the address. He knew these houses in San Jose. I liked the fact that he didn't need to come out and give me an estimate after looking at the furnace. Two other co. came out to give me an estimate. After one told me I needed a new flue and of course, increase in cost, I called Dale and he said it is included if it needed a new one. The other co. said he didn't see a need for a new flue. So I went with Dale because he assured me the cost was the same even if a flue was needed. I called and they said it'll take about 4 hours to complete and I got a 1 hour arrival window. Dale called the morning of the job to tell me his workers were going to be there in about 15 minutes which was right at the beginning of the 1 hour window. They were on time and finished in an hour. I was pleasantly surprised. I asked if I needed a new flue because of the other bid and the worker said I didn't. He showed me the new thermostat and how it works. It gave off nice heat. I did mention the heater didn't seem flush to the wall on one side. The main worker fixed that and showed his coworker how to make sure it was flushed as possible given the warp walls over the years. He also reviewed the warranty. They did not leave any mess. It went very smoothly. PG&E came out 4 days later and passed it, removed the hazard notice. I even called Dale after the installation and said I forgot to mention the $50 off coupon from the Angie's List magazine and he told me once my payment cleared, he would send me a check for $50 for a furnace install. WOW, I got the check today! He is TRUE to his word!!!

We were happy with the estimate and were able to have the heater installed within a few days. The two young men that did the installation were very pleasant. The installation went smoothly and I was thrilled with the product. It's a two stage heater and the air flow is so much better than the blast of air from our old heater. Our new heater is a softer and milder circulation of air. It is very comfortable.

The A&H service person arrived on time and called ahead to say he would be arriving in 10 minutes. I appreciated the advance warning. When he arrived, he first looked over the furnace, checking when it was built and its general condition. We turned on the furnace and he was able to tell right away that it was not blowing air properly. He soon discovered that someone (my neighbor, who had been "helping" me several months ago turn on the pilot light) had inadvertently put the blower system in backwards. It took less than a minute to put it back into proper position. He did not try to sell me a new furnace, even though our old one is already 30 years old, but did encourage us to have it checked by PG&E annually to ensure it is still safe to run. Given that the problem was so minor, I was really happy that I had chosen A&H, as their service charge is only $80, compared to over $100 for all of the other companies I looked into.
Description of Work: Diagnosed a problem with the furnace fan not turning off and warm air not blowing properly. He discovered that the whole fan was installed backwards, so the furnace was overheating and thus keeping the fan on continuously.

After calling their number, I was able get an appointment the same week. Their workers arrived on time and completed their work in under one hour. They were polite and easy to deal with.
Description of Work: Attached a large vacuum cleaner powered by a generator to the furnace (to the sheet metal box above it). Covered registers (both intake and outflow) with paper. The vacuum generated was rather modest. Very small quantity of dust and debris was sucked out of the ducts. The vacuum had been applied for around 15 minutes. Some doubt remains in my mind if this is the right technique to get the duct completely clean.

I am extremely please with the work from start to finish. When I first called the company I was able to speak to owner Dale Phelps right away. He came out to my house, figured out what needed to be done & had an estimate for me in writing quickly. The estimate was a firm price so there were no surprises. He was very clear in explaining things to me. He then went to the city, obtained the permits on my behalf & the work was scheduled without delay. His staff that did the work were prompt, professional, courteous, kept me informed, got the job done & cleaned up after themselves. There was one small glitch right after the work was completed; I called Dale & they came right out & took care of it. Then the city inspector wanted one more thing done. Again they came right out & took care of it & saw to it that my permits were finaled. They warranty their work & stand behind it. It was an excellent experience & I highly recommend them!
Description of Work: Installed Fujitsu mini-split AC unit w/ heat pump in detached structure (home office) at my house. This included obtaining the permits from the city, reworking electrical, putting in drain, installing unit itself & separate condenser, & ensuring that I passed city inspections upon completion of job.

I was given a 2 hour time window, which I appreciated greatly over the 4 hour window many of the other companies quoted. The technician arrived 30 minutes into the window and had the problem diagnosed and repaired within about 10-15 minutes. He made some recommendations with respect to our filters and then he was off. A positive experience, and less expensive than other companies for a repair visit.

I called the company in the morning and left a message. 15 to 20 minutes later, Reinhardt gave me a call from the road. I described my situation (I believed my attic installed A/C unit was leaking onto my ceiling, causing a bubble and water stains), and he said that he could come out in a hour to do an assessment. He was on-time and when he assessed the situation, he didn't believe at all that there was an A/C leak. He thought it was another issue unrelated to the A/C. While inspecting the unit, he also made a couple of recommendations, but noted that none of them were necessary for a well functioning unit. In the end, he didn't recommend doing any work, and he didn't try at all to up-sell me service or get me to spend money.

Crew was punctual. The head of the crew had a general idea of work to be performed, so we reviewed all the specifics of the job before work began. Blankets were spread on hardwood floors for protection, work went smoothly (with tolerable noise) until project was completed in mid-afternoon. Clean up was very good, but in a job involving removal of old ductwork and many trips through house to attic access, there was still some clean up required by homeowners after crew left. This company's estimate was the lowest of 4 bids.
Description of Work: Installed Trane condenser (3 1/2 ton, 13 SEER) for air conditioning (coil unit already in place), ran copper refrigerant lines between coil and condenser units, installed disconnect switch for condenser, installed a new air return in attic and insulated all return ductwork in attic.

The owner Dale, returned my phone call and we made an appointment for an estimate. He arrived right on schedule. He looked at my current furnace (installed 17 years ago) and indicated that, although not quite as efficient as the newest ones, it should not be replaced. He gave me a bid on the air conditioner and an optional air filter. After my 2nd bid and some research, I asked him about the model air conditioner he recommended (Trane XB13) vs. the Trane XR13. The latter has a longer warranty and a bit more sound installation. He indicated that he felt the the XB13 was a better value. I opted to go with the XR 13 at $400 more. I also added the costs of duct cleaning. I made an appointment for the installation. The two installers arrived at the appointed time (9 AM). They presented me the revised estimate which I signed and the work started. During the installation I noticed that the air filter had not been installed and indicated the price included it. I failed to note that it was not on the revised bid. We called Dale, went over the bids, and he quickly agreed that a mistake had been made. He had another worker bring this to the site and it was installed. Due to the layout of my installation, the workers had a challenge running a drain and also routing a new wire to the thermostat. They succeeded with both and completed the installation. They cleaned up thoroughly behind themselves. The only small error was that the panel to the attic was not closed properly and there were some fingerprints on it. Installation was completed at 4:30.
Description of Work: Installed central air conditioner and air filter.
