After interviewing 8 contractors, many from Angieslist, we selected Lou and his firm, Stone Age Designs to renovate our newly purchased townhome. Though his bid was about average in the middle price-wise, Lou's willingness to listen and provide advice gave him an edge over other contractors. He came up with a detailed estimate that included an itemized list of expenses, helping to alleviate our concerns about project costs skyrocketing and also giving us confidence that he had a plan of action. After the initial contract was signed, Lou was proactive about contacting our immediate neighbors, making sure he would be the point-of-contact if there were any complaints about noise or construction since we were not residing on the property during construction. This personal care for not only our residence, but our surroundings were evident throughout the entire 2.5 month project. His employees, Daniel and Miguel were careful to clean up each day, leaving the work site organized and neat. Lou took the time to understand we wanted, giving his input when needed allowing us to come up with a design plan that was not only aesthetically pleasing, but functional as well. Once the designs were finalized, Lou worked with the city to make sure the appropriate permits were pulled, working with the city to help insure our desires fit inside our city's (Manhattan Beach) "Green" building codes. The construction went smoothly and we were able to contact via phone/text/email Lou daily regarding any questions or concerns that came up. Any concerns we had were immediately addressed by Lou, making sure every detail was done to our satisfaction. Having gone through several home renovation projects in the past, here are few examples where Stone Age Design's dedication and service stood out. -- After 3rd-party painters went through and painted our interior, Lou inspected their job, pointing out places he would have them redo and catching some minor damage they did to our wood flooring, allowing us to have the painters make the repairs. One week after they finished and we moved in, our old water heater went out. Lou, Miguel and Daniel were there the same day helping us replace the water heater, making sure we didn't have to go without hot water. We had some original built-in cabinets that had some paint chipping off. In our efforts to save some money we decided to defer repainting the cabinets to another date. Daniel took it upon himself to touch-up the chipped areas without us asking, truly treating our home like their own. Even now, over one month after I've paid the final bill, they're still helping us reinstall some fixtures that are malfunctioning. Even though the fixtures were faulty from the manufacturer, and are being replaced under the manufacturer's warranty, Stone Age is still making sure we're satisfied.
Description of Work: The scope of our work include adding wood floors throughout, renovating our kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and redesigning a new fireplace.

This was our first experience using a contractor as new home owners and it couldn't have been better. Not only did they make our old tiny 1950's bathroom look modern and amazing, they were professional, pleasant, punctual and very reasonably prices compared to other quotes I got. If you are thinking of hiring a company for a project in your house , these guys are it! Everything I asked for I got, and they even tiled my kitchen backsplash the day after I asked for it! They have made our house beautiful and went above and beyond at every turn, fixing old plumbing, patching holes in my roof, hanging mrrors that I couldn't do myself...the works. You will get your money's worth and more by using Stone Age Design. Lou and Daniel and their crew are the best.

We called and made an appointment. Fermin was on time. We communicated back and forth until we agreed on the task and amount. The job was complete within a week.
Description of Work: We had an old wooden deck that they came in and re-did the structure and installed travertile tiles. The workmanship was excellent. The job was done per the estimate both time and money. We were very happy and will use them again. We dealt with Fermin Martinez, who does the more general contracting task.
We decided to hire Stone Age for our project for two reasons: First, Lou Phillipe seemed easy to work with. Second, Lou provided the most reasonable and thorough quote. Moreover, Lou was willing to work around our schedule and his quote included a detailed list of expenses, including a budget for mid-level fixtures, e.g., sinks, faucets, lighting, hardware, etc? This is an important piece of data that the other contractors we received quotes from left out of their estimate. Although we decided to up the ante by going with higher end fixtures, his quote gave us a much more accurate representation of the overall project cost. We are very satisfied with the work performed. We have received numerous compliments from family, friends, and even our realtor. Needless to say, the project was not without its share of challenges, but Lou and his team worked through these challenges by providing solutions that were both aesthetically pleasing and pragmatic. Lou was able to locate materials, such as granite and marble at a reasonable cost. He and his crew were careful to ensure that every tile, stone, and fixture was precisely installed to achieve the best possible fit and finish, even if this meant replacing certain pieces and regrouting. He even had his cabinet maker create another set of closet doors after we expressed some dissatisfaction with the original ones they installed. Our only minor gripe was that the space for the new powder room vanity they installed was not measured correctly, As a result, the drawers hit the door casing when opened all the way. Lou?s solution was to shave the casings and adjust the drawer fronts. Most people probably don?t notice, but we are more discerning. Again, this is minor when one considers the scope of the work that was done. Overall, we are very pleased.
Description of Work: Stone Age, Inc. completely remodeled three of our bathrooms, taking two of them down to the studs, while rerouting the plumbing in one and adding some much needed insulation in the other. They completely remodeled our bar. They fabricated and installed a granite fireplace hearth. They renovated three closets with new doors, hardware and moldings, while lining the interior with cedar planks. Finally, they installed new casings and baseboards in three bedrooms.

They were prompt in their response when I first called them. The guy who came out was professional and did a thorough estimate. He was timely in getting back to me with the estimate. I found them through Angie's List.
Description of Work: I had an estimate Stone Age Designs/KD Construction last week maybe Wednesday. The estimate was for a bathroom remodel.
Most people start out reviews discussing quality of work, and price paid. We would like to start out with two seemingly simple, but often overlooked, things-- listening, and attention to detail. We interviewed two other highly regarded contractors from Angie's List before meeting with Lou Philippe of Stone Age Designs/KD Construction. The first thing we noticed was Lou's willingness to listen to our ideas and concerns. He made some excellent suggestions (that went unmentioned by the other two contractors). Lou quickly got back to us with his proposal, a several page easily read document. This proposal described in detail room by room the work to be done. This was in contrast to the other proposals which were almost completely devoid of the specifics of the job. Lou's attention to detail continued throughout the job as we received regular progress reports including any issues (permits, weather, inspections, etc.) which might have affected the time frame of the job. As to the quality of work and price paid mentioned at the beginning of this report, we were completely satisfied. We intend to use Lou and his company again in the near future to remodel another bathroom.
Description of Work: Complete remodel of a condominium, including kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms . etc.

From quote to finished product, the crew was prompt and professional and did their best to keep things clean. In my experience something always goes wrong with a project and the measure of a good contractor is how they respond to any problems. Lou and his team were quick to respond and find a solution to a problem. They are detail-oriented and while it took us longer than expected to complete the punch list, Lou and his team were not satisfied until everything was perfect. Our kitchen and patio look great!
Description of Work: 1) Remodel of kitchen, including resurfacing of cabinets, installation of new granite countertops, installation of new hardwood floors and staining of those floors, installation of tile backsplash, new lighting, and new wall paint. 2) Remodel of patio, including installation of new tile, hot mop of subfloor, replacement of door thresholds, patch of stucco as needed, match stucco paint.

I selected Lou Philippe and Stone Age Designs after interviewing two other contractors to refresh the interior of a 1940?s home that I had recently purchased. The work included updating the kitchen and adding more electrical outlets over the sink and in the laundry area. In the bathroom, additional tile was added in the shower and the single-sink vanity was replaced with a new one with double-sink. Replacement of the vanity involved additional plumbing. Two exterior doors were replaced. Lou is a great example of what a contractor should be. He?s punctual, knowledgeable, listens and considers the little details that ensure a great result. I had the grand idea of totally remodeling the kitchen but the cost turned out to be more than I?d budgeted. Lou?s initial proposal included all of the cost details which made it easy to revise the project to fit the budget and substitute a kitchen remodel with the re-facing. The project took a little over three weeks. Lou has a great on-site team headed by Miguel. They cleaned up the construction debris daily and took care not to damage any of the other areas of the house. They skillfully removed the old bathroom vanity and installed the new one without damaging any of the surrounding tiles. The new vanity looks like it?s always been there. The tile added to the shower was installed to match the existing tile and pattern right down to the color of the grout. And the kitchen?it looks absolutely fantastic!! The re-facing maintained the charm and character of the house while the new electrical work brought it into the 21st century. All of the work performed was high-quality and completed as expected. Lou kept me informed of the project?s progress and any potential problems (none of which materialized, thank goodness). This was a ?no drama? project expertly completed by Lou and his team. I would recommend Lou and Stone-Age Design without reservation.
Description of Work: Kitchen - Reface kitchen cabinets and replace cabinet doors and drawer fronts; add new upper and lower cabinet with tile countertop and backsplash; replace stove vent with microwave; add recessed light over sink counter and new electrical outlets. Laundry - Replace external faucets and drain pipe for washer with in-wall, recessed kit and related plumbing; new outlet for dryer. Bathroom - remove single sink vanity and replace with double sink vanity and related plumbing; add new tile to upper section of shower stall.
To choose our contractor we did a walk-through with each candidate and provided detailed sketches; Stone Age's proposal was the most complete, and from the start we felt comfortable with Lou. Lou listens, he has a good sense of aesthetics, and he implemented our overall design while taking care of the details that make everything come together. Permits were pulled, followed by demolition of the bathroom, then electrical work, plumbing, marble flooring, marble wall (shower and bath surround), hardwood flooring, custom cabinets, molding & trim, drywall / plaster, painting, then cleanup and final adjustments. All of the employees were friendly and polite throughout the entire project, and took great care to minimize the dust and mess (we were living in the other half of the house). The final product is beautiful and a pleasure to live with, and we were impressed with the skill that went into each step.
Description of Work: Existing 200 sq ft master bath removed down to the studs, installed large marble and frameless glass shower, tub with granite deck, double sink floating vanity, custom linen closets, marble floor, recessed low voltage lighting, and enclosed stacking washer + dryer (previously located in garage). Electrical, gas, and sewer upgrades were required and some 50-year old drains needed replacing. Hardwood flooring (solid pre-finished) was installed in the master bedroom, master closet, and 2nd bedroom; leveling and de-squeaking of the floor was performed. New molding installed (wood at wood floors, marble at marble floors). Stone Age also built a walk-in closet with custom cabinets in the master bedroom, including electrical outlets and recessed lighting. Stone age also upgraded the main 200A electrical panel for the house.

Response from Stone Age Design & Build Inc
Dear valued Angie's List member It was not till after receiving a notifaction from Angie's List and reviewing a posted report, to my surprise, had come to find our proposal was never received. Unfortunately, during that period of time I was a bit busier then normal and failed to followup, after sending the proposal, as I usually do. I apologize for this. After a little research I found that the proposal was sent to a .com email address and not the correct .net address. Thank you for accepting our request to resend the proposal, your continued interests in Stone Age Designs and your honest feedback thru Angies List. Lou Philippe CEO, President

We chose Stone Age after interviewing a few contractors. Their estimate was competitive and we got a good feeling after meeting with Lou that we did not with others. Their estimate was also more detailed in outlining the scope of work to be done. Lou was very easy to work with and very responsive be it by phone, email, or text. He was either on the job site daily or checked in by phone. Daniel is a master tiler and did a beautiful job in the shower. The crew was very careful to keep the dust to a minimal by draping the floors, furniture, and cleaned up daily. We had some delays that were completely out of Stone Age's control with the city inspectors (due to furlough days and one particularly picky inspector). While we were waiting, we decided to do some electrical updates around the house as well since they have already opened some of the walls had an idea what the obstacles were. Additional work was clearly detailed in separate estimates and invoices. We are very happy with the final results and would not hesitate to hire Stone Age again.
Description of Work: 3rd floor master bathroom remodeling: installing jetted tub with new electrical from 3 floors below, new tiled shower with frameless door, granite counter top, counter top medicine cabinet, Panasonic fan/heater, adding new can lights and outlets. Misc. electrical work: adding new can lights and reading light in living room, spot light for niche, repairing kitchen under-cabinet lights. Price included frameless shower door, granite counter top, and permit fees. I bought all the fixtures, countertop cabinet, tiles, and tub separately.
Lou spent a lot of time with me on the design before actually starting. He went with me to pick out the tile, bringing samples of the refinished cabinet doors and soapstone so I could make a good design choice. He made the suggestion that I use soapstone for the countertops and I am very pleased with the result. The work went smoothly. Daniel did a great job on all the tiling. Between Lou and Daniel, one of them was present every day and made sure that things were cleaned up at the end of each work day. I really love my kitchen. It has a sophisticated look, and the lighting choices accent the design beautifully. Their attention to detail allowed me to relax during the job, since they took care of everything without me having to say anything. It was a good experience and I would definitely recommend them for any remodeling job.
Description of Work: Stone Age Designs remodeled my kitchen. This included refinishing the cabinets, installing soapstone and marble countertops and sink, putting in new appliances, designing and installing a recessed lighting system, a glass mosaic backsplash and travertine tile flooring. He also extended the island, replacing the butcher block top with marble.

Stone Age was excellent. He gave us a very competitive quote in the beginning and came in very close to it. The only overages were due to more expensive materials that we picked out ourselves and incidental items that Lou mentioned would likely be needed, but that he could not price until after work started. He was also very punctual. We had to coordinate the start of the project with an asbestos abatement company that removed our old floor, and Stone Age was able to start work the following day. They completed all work in under a week as promised in the beginning. They were on time everyday and responded to any concerns we had. Most importantly, the finished product looks beautiful. We're very satisfied with our entire experience.

Lou and Daniel are great. Lou did the organizing and design work while Daniel did the stonework. I explaned to Lou what I wanted to do and we spent a lot of time going over ideas and suggestions before coming up with the final design. Lou has a great design sense, especially with colors. He was personable and wanted me to be satisfied with the design before starting the actual work. Daniel is a master stone and tile person and most important, always pleasant. Lou and Daniel work well together, each with their own expertise. After each day's work, they always made sure things were cleaned up and liveable. Lou paid such attention to details that after a while I realized I could stop worrying about the little things and let him handle them. He was a real pleasure to work with.
Description of Work: Stone Age Designs remodeled my 20 year old master bath into a beautiful spa retreat. They were able to rearrange the tub and shower, replacing the tub with an air bubble tub and a huge shower. Previously the shower was too small to use comfortably. Tiling was done in travertine for the walls, floor and around the tub. New cabinets were installed with a marble countertop.

I conducted a very competitive bidding process for the tile work in the remodel of a nursery bathroom. I obtained four estimates from reputable tile contractors. Stone Age Design was by far the best overall quote for the job in terms of quality and price. I wanted fine quality with an eye for detail and also complete the job in tight time frame as the baby was on the way. Lou and Daniel were amazing. In addition to being honest and good people, they are skilled professionals who will work with the homeowner to get you what you want. Lou's background as a general contractor came in handy. Stone Age's responsiveness can't be beat. They would return my calls/emails promptly even if they were at a remote job site. We did the bathroom with a large spa tub in Carara marble which Lou helped me source. They also fabricated a very large Carara marble bathroom slab counter top. I trust them to complete the job. I'm lining up more projects for them right now!

It was a pleasure to work with Lou. He was efficient, thoughtful, and punctual. His opinions throughout the process were highly valued, and I was appreciative of the time he spent explaining options and procedures to me. Lou maintains a high level of integrity and a strong desire to exceed expectations. His foreman, Daniel, is polite and hardworking. The crew worked nearly 6 or 7 days a week to complete our house remodel. Because Lou does not contract work out, he was able to oversee every step of the project, from installing tile to helping with paint color choices. This also allowed the job to be completed economically and efficiently.
Description of Work: Stone Age design remodeled our 1950s kitchen and laundry room, installing new limestone flooring, Caesarstone counter tops, sink, shelving, and all new appliances. They also re-tiled a bathroom, reconfigured cabinets, updated some plumbing, and installed recessed lighting throughout the living room and kitchen. To streamline the remodeling process, Stone Age also painted the interior of the house and worked hard prepping. Other minor updates were completed as well. All additional repairs and charges were invoiced via email as they occurred which prevented any surprises at the end. Any oversight or errors made regarding financing or materials were adjusted and corrected promptly.
Principal Lou Philippe and senior partner Daniel Vazquez are welcome in our home anytime. They worked diligently in bringing life to my wife's vision of adding more space and luxury to our three bathrooms without knocking down walls. They had an extreme attention to detail, and showed patience and professionalism as we worked through the critical details of coordinating primary tile and glass mosaic trim, cabinetry, fixtures, and wall colors. Additionally, they made economical suggestions for improvements outside the scope of the job that really made Stone Age a great value-added provider. Finally, they were very responsive to meeting my wife's needs for handicap accessibility for shower, toilets, and Jacuzzi tub. The only negatives to the job was the additional expense incurred to replace all plumbing throughout the house with copper, which we initially hoped would not be the case but the original 40+ year old galvanized pipes, not surprisingly, made the re-piping an absolute necessity (a wonderful improvement to the property and to the water quality that we now enjoy). Other additional costs were due to necessary additions and upgrades for which we opted (our choice).
Description of Work: Complete remodel of master bathroom, guest bathroom, and powder room, including tile work and granite countertops, installation of damless, frameless shower enclosure in master, Jacuzzi tub in guest, three custom vanities, replacement of ALL galvanized piping throughout house with copper, ceiling fan additions in bedroom and family room, gas dryer heat exhaust re-piping in laundry room garage area. The price included the three beautiful granite vanity countertops, but did not include the fixtures (comfort height handicap-assessable dual-flush toilets, vessel sink, faucets, shower assemblies, ceiling exhaust fans, doors, locks, etc.).

Stone Age Designs made this project one of the best remodel experiences I have ever had and I have done many over the years.
Description of Work: Installed new Caesarstone countertops in my kitchen & marble vanity tops in my bathrooms. I was so happy with the workmanship I also had them tile the master shower, tub & floor. They were also able to install the new sinks, fixtures, plumbing, sockets & switches and even added under counter lighting.
