Supposedly a 4-5 day job. At first, Mike and his crew of 2 showed up on the days and times promised, then Mike started putting us off when we had to order and pick up parts from the manufacture in Buena Park - such as, for 2 weeks after the first time I drove to Buena Park to get roof panels. Calls to remind Mike became a pattern. He would always say that he had another job going, that he needed to 5 days to finish this or that other job before he could devote the single day it would take to finish ours. When our job was finally finished, - even a different year after it began, our sunroom roof leaked. Mike said he would charge us $80 an hour plus materials to fix the leaks by applying MORE polyurethane to the roof panel seams, then covering them with sheet metal held down by screws. I said a secure roof is part of the contract; he disagreed. I finally got him to agree to send someone out to apply more caulk to the leak areas. 2 weeks passed without a fix. I call Mike - again. Three days later his son appears and tramps around the sunroom roof for awhile. Next rain, the leaks recur. I call Mike. We wrangle on the phone awhile, then he agrees to MY suggestion of applying Jiffy Seal (sticky, tar-backed, foil-topped tape) instead of his out-dated sheet metal thing, if I buy the material. I pick up all materials the next day. Another 5 weeks + pass. Weary of Mike and blessed with being very handy, I decide to do the job myself. Arriving on the roof, I find that the polyurethane used by Mike's crew has been applied incorrectly, and to an uncleaned surface with 15 years of crud on it. No wonder it leaked! More importantly, the cement shingles of the main house are destroyed in 2 places where they meet the sunroom roof, as if a large someone with a large foot had crushed them by tromping on them. In one spot, the tar paper under the shingles was ripped, exposing raw wood. I'm hot!! I called Mike (You'd think I'd have his number on speed dial by now), saying that I'll also call the BBB and CSLB. The days of waiting are over. Miraculously, within an hour, he and his son are at our door. He tries to cover up the damage, then calls me to the roof to haughtily ask "what's the problem". I explain that since no one has been on the roof but his crew, that leaves them as the only perps regarding the shingle damage. He loudly - very loudly - denies all culpability in any and everything, even accusing me of having faulty roofing paper; as if that had anything to do with anything! I believe Mike to be a natural bully, accepting that people - especially people my size will quake at his imposing, overbearing gruffness. I stood firm, equally (unfortunately) loud without intimidation until finally, he threatened to hurt me, with bellowing voice and pointing finger in my face if I follow through with my calls to BBB and California State Contractors Licensing Board. Mike is approx. 6'3", 230#, 50ish with a thick neck and barrel chest. I'm 5'5", 138#, 67 years old. I descended the ladder, locked doors behind me going into the house, then called the police and filled Carlsbad police report #10-41695 about the threat - at that point, he truly scared me. Mike railed and yelled all the way to his truck, then screeched off. I repaired the sunroom roof and the main house roof myself, removing many spots of incorrectly applied polyurethane and replacing it with patches of Jiffy seal. There was rust starting on approx. 75% of the screws covered by Mike's crew, indicating water intrusion from a crummy caulk job. The job took me a full day plus. So many shingles were destroyed on the main roof that I was forced to use sheets of aluminum flashing to cover the gaps until I can (hopefully) find replacement shingles. I cannot recommend California Doors & Windows.
Description of Work: Hired California Doors & Windows - herein referred to as "Mike" or derivatives of "he" - to install a used sunroom that we purchased from Craigslist because of his purported experience and craft. Contract was for labor only, we paid for any parts and materials.

Response from California Doors & Windows
The Member has decided to leave out several TRUE FACTS about his project and situation in his comments. The Member called me in November 09 to install a used sunroom that he purchased on Craig's List for $4,500.00. I informed the Member at that time, that my company did not install used sunrooms because of liability and warranty issues. He said he could not find anyone to install this used sunroom and that it was only 5 years old. I found out later by Metals USA (the manufacturer) that they quit making these old rooms over 12 years ago. The Member asked me for my help, so I decided to go out to his home and look at the condition of this old room. When I viewed this room, it was all in parts in his back yard, several of the parts were for a patio cover (not a sunroom) and it was severally damaged. There were holes, scrapes, gauges all over the walls and roofing panels along with tar, polyurethane and dirt stuck to them. I informed the Member and his wife, at that time, that I could probably reconstruct this old room for him if he cleaned up all of the parts, purchased several missing parts (I gave him a list), at my cost, with no mark-up. I also informed the Member that since I did not sell him this room, I COULD NOT OR WOULD NOT WARRANTY THIS OLD DAMAGED SUNROOM. They both agreed to these terms. I also informed the Member, that it was his sole responsibility to get a permit from the City of Carlsbad prior to reconstruction. He said that he DID NOT want to get a permit, that he DID NOT like dealing with the Building Department and that he DID NOT want to spend any more MONEY, especially on a building permit. I believe he knew that this old sunroom would not comply to today's ICC Building Codes and that the building department would not issue him a permit to reconstruct this old sunroom. He asked if I would build it without the permit if he took all responsibility, I agreed again to help him out. In December, my crew arrived to start to reconstruct this old room. When we got there, we discovered that he DID NOT clean up the parts to this old room, nor did he clear away the obstacles on the patio as we agreed on. I informed him of these problems at that time, he said he DID NOT have time to clean it and wanted us to clear the obstacles and build it anyway, that he would have it cleaned after it was up. My crew and I were very disappointed. We decided to help him out, since we were already there and started to clear away the obstacles and clean up the parts of the sunroom Also at that time, the existing fascia board on the house was already removed. There were broken roofing tiles that existed, building paper was destroyed along with several other problems due to the existing fascia board not being removed by a professional. I informed the Member of these problems and he said not to worry about it and that he was aware of these defects and he purchased his home with these existing conditions. After the walls were constructed, we started to install the roofing panels. We discovered that the old panels had a 4" bow/upside down crown to them, that they were damaged severally (holes, gauges, scrapes, dirt, mud, polyurethane, the interior foam had expanded) several of the cams locks would not engage and 2 of the panels were cut out for an old chimney. I called up Metals USA and asked them to send me 2 new roofing panels. They told me that the panels I described have not been manufactured in over 12 years and that they were no longer available. I immediately informed the Member at that time to purchase new roofing panels, at my cost the Member told us to hold off on the roof until he could contact the person he purchased the old sunroom from so he could sue him to have the money for the new roof. 5 weeks later the Member called me up and said he could not find the person he purchased this old room from so he could not start a lawsuit. I told him that there were going to be several problems with leaking due to the fact that the 2 new roof panels will not integrate properly with his old, bowed and obsolete panels, since the new panels are straight and will not flush-up properly. He asked me to do my best so I agreed to try to complete the job to the best of my ability. After the roof was on, I told the Member that since the 2 new panels did not integrate properly with the old panels that I needed to flash-in the roofing panel joints with polyurethane and sheet metal. I told him there would be an increase in the cost (change order) of $500.00 additional dollars to do the job. He refuse to pay any more money and told me to just polyurethane the joints. I told him that I would not or could not guarantee that the sunroom would not leak. He shrugged his shoulders and walked away. Several weeks afterward the Member called me up and said he had leaks in the roofing panels and wanted me to come out and fix them. I reminded him of our conversations but he asked me for my help because he had hurt his back and could not get up on the roof. I sent my son Dalton over for the first time to seal the roof again. After the second rain, the Member called me up again and said he still had 2 leaks. I again reminded him of our conversations of the old damaged roofing panels. He asked me to come and help him again because his back was still hurt, I agreed and sent my son Dalton out for the second time to try to seal this old damaged roof. After the third rain the Member was very distraught, he said he still had leaks. I reminded him again that it was due to the defective roof panels that he DID NOT want to spend the money to fix. He asked if he bought the jiffy seal would I send Dalton out to install it, I agreed. On June 9, 2010 at approx. 12 PM the Member left me a voice message threatening me that he still had leaks, that Dalton never came out, that Dalton broke several of his roofing tiles, that we never cleaned the roofing panels before installing the polyurethane on the top and that he was going to complain to the BBB and State Contractors Board. When we arrived at his house around 1:30 PM, 1 1/2 hours after I received his threatening voice mail, the Member was very upset. My son and I went on to the roof to inspect what he was talking about. The Member DID NOT come out. After several minutes I knocked on the door and invited the Member out to inspect the roof. We all got onto the roof and then the Member started falsely accusing my son Dalton for breaking his 25 year old or older roofing tiles. I assured the Member that his roofing tiles were already broken, as I discussed with him prior to reconstructing the sunroom and that we never even stepped on his existing roof. He also said we ripped his old roofing paper up and he was getting leaks there. I informed him again that these conditions already existed and due to the fact that his existing eaves were 2' over and metal flashed in to his existing sunroom panels that there was no way the leaks were coming from there. He then accused us of not cleaning the roofing panels before we installed the polyurethane. I informed him again that that was his job, which he DID NOT do, it was not my responsibility to clean off all of the dirt on his old roof panels and that he should of bought a new roof system, at my cost. Immediately afterwards the Member became very irate, distraught and over emotional. He started using profanity at me and my son and called me a "F-in LIAR". My son and I just stood there and took his verbal abuse. After he was finished with his emotional breakdown, I ask if he had purchased the jiffy seal so we could install it at that time. He then said "F-YOU". I said "what did you say to me". He repeated his terminology, "F-YOU", I don't want you to touch my roof, leave my home". My son and I were both in shock and proceeded to leave. A couple hours later after we left, around 3:30 PM a woman police officer from Carlsbad PD called me and wanted to talk to me about a disturbance at the Member's house between myself, my son Dalton and the Member. She said that the Member said I threatened him and he was afraid of me. I informed her of my side of the story, that I never threatened him, he threatened me and that he was currently emotionally disturbed, she agreed. She said that he admitted to cursing at me and my son, that what we did by leaving was in all of our best interest, that no criminal activities existed during this confrontation and not to have any more contact with him, but to work it out in court, I agreed. In conclusion, the Member's lack of not wanting to spend any more money to buy a new roof panel system, at my cost, after I informed him of the potential problems, trying to sue the person that he bought the old sunroom from, so that person could pay for his new, needed roof system, but he could not find him, not wanting to get a permit to save money, not wanting me to metal flash-in his old damaged roof prior to completion, to save money, falsely accusing my son of damaging his 25 year old or older existing roofing tiles, that he was well aware of at the time he purchased his home, complaining that we DID NOT clean his sunroom roofing panels, when he knew it was his sole responsibility to clean his own old, filthy and damaged sunroom, that he bought on Craig's List for $4,500.00, his convenient lack of memory, his failure to disclose all of the facts and details in this case, his lie of saying that I threatened him when it was exactly the opposite (he threatened me), his demand for a refund of half of the contract price, which is $3000.00, (he just wants me to pay for his new roof panels now since he could not find the person he bought the old sunroom from to sue him and get him to pay for the panels) his assumption that I am responsible and liable for his mistakes along with his words and emotional breakdown when we were trying to help him solve his problems makes the Member's complaint to be absurd, unjustified, negligent and downright utterly ridiculous.
