Supposedly a 4-5 day job. At first, Mike and his crew of 2 showed up on the days and times promised, then Mike started putting us off when we had to order and pick up parts from the manufacture in Buena Park - such as, for 2 weeks after the first time I drove to Buena Park to get roof panels. Calls to remind Mike became a pattern. He would always say that he had another job going, that he needed to 5 days to finish this or that other job before he could devote the single day it would take to finish ours. When our job was finally finished, - even a different year after it began, our sunroom roof leaked. Mike said he would charge us $80 an hour plus materials to fix the leaks by applying MORE polyurethane to the roof panel seams, then covering them with sheet metal held down by screws. I said a secure roof is part of the contract; he disagreed. I finally got him to agree to send someone out to apply more caulk to the leak areas. 2 weeks passed without a fix. I call Mike - again. Three days later his son appears and tramps around the sunroom roof for awhile. Next rain, the leaks recur. I call Mike. We wrangle on the phone awhile, then he agrees to MY suggestion of applying Jiffy Seal (sticky, tar-backed, foil-topped tape) instead of his out-dated sheet metal thing, if I buy the material. I pick up all materials the next day. Another 5 weeks + pass. Weary of Mike and blessed with being very handy, I decide to do the job myself. Arriving on the roof, I find that the polyurethane used by Mike's crew has been applied incorrectly, and to an uncleaned surface with 15 years of crud on it. No wonder it leaked! More importantly, the cement shingles of the main house are destroyed in 2 places where they meet the sunroom roof, as if a large someone with a large foot had crushed them by tromping on them. In one spot, the tar paper under the shingles was ripped, exposing raw wood. I'm hot!! I called Mike (You'd think I'd have his number on speed dial by now), saying that I'll also call the BBB and CSLB. The days of waiting are over. Miraculously, within an hour, he and his son are at our door. He tries to cover up the damage, then calls me to the roof to haughtily ask "what's the problem". I explain that since no one has been on the roof but his crew, that leaves them as the only perps regarding the shingle damage. He loudly - very loudly - denies all culpability in any and everything, even accusing me of having faulty roofing paper; as if that had anything to do with anything! I believe Mike to be a natural bully, accepting that people - especially people my size will quake at his imposing, overbearing gruffness. I stood firm, equally (unfortunately) loud without intimidation until finally, he threatened to hurt me, with bellowing voice and pointing finger in my face if I follow through with my calls to BBB and California State Contractors Licensing Board. Mike is approx. 6'3", 230#, 50ish with a thick neck and barrel chest. I'm 5'5", 138#, 67 years old. I descended the ladder, locked doors behind me going into the house, then called the police and filled Carlsbad police report #10-41695 about the threat - at that point, he truly scared me. Mike railed and yelled all the way to his truck, then screeched off. I repaired the sunroom roof and the main house roof myself, removing many spots of incorrectly applied polyurethane and replacing it with patches of Jiffy seal. There was rust starting on approx. 75% of the screws covered by Mike's crew, indicating water intrusion from a crummy caulk job. The job took me a full day plus. So many shingles were destroyed on the main roof that I was forced to use sheets of aluminum flashing to cover the gaps until I can (hopefully) find replacement shingles. I cannot recommend California Doors & Windows.
