It could not have gone worse. After they were "done," I learned their license had been suspended 3 weeks earlier and the Better Business Bureau had kicked them out. They left my house AND BACKYARD looking like a tornado had struck it. I was assigned 4 guys, but only 1 worked--the lead. I told him I was paying for 4 and asked him to make the others work, but he wouldn't. When I tried to give the other three things to do, they said they didn't understand English and ignored me and continued their day-long break. I got a call from their manager about 6 hours into the job who told me the lead had called, complaining I had asked them to install appliances. I don't know why he would say that but I didn't. The lead kept complaining that I was taking too much time making sure I had a look into each box brought in from the truck (which took 2 seconds apiece) to see whether it should go in the shed or the house, so I finally left them alone. They were supposed to leave an aisle in the middle of the shed for me to walk down to be able to see everything. Instead, when you open the shed door, you are confronted with a wall of boxes to the ceiling. The lead came to me an hour and a half before they were supposed to stop and said they were done. I told him I had paid for 8 1/2 hours minimum. He said the company would reimburse me the difference. Later, the manager said no, they would not, after the lead had left. He said the lead had no authority to promise that. But before the lead left, he said he took a walk around the house and the yard to make sure everything was just the way I would want it. I was so exhausted by then (I'm disabled and a senior citizen), I just said thank you and didn't get up. When I got the energy to get up, I was horrified. I discovered the state of the shed. But the back deck was also filled with boxes, furniture, and appliances. Miscellaneous furniture was scattered throughout the backyard, as well as trash. Front yard, too. Furniture I had been very specific about placement was in the wrong place, although I was assured it had been placed correctly. A slew of boxes filled the bedroom that didn't belong there. I found a washing machine in a backyard pathway. The refrigerator had two dents in the front that were not there before. My terra cotta tile in the kitchen now had holes in it. Some brand new furniture was scratched to death in very visible places. Pegs for the bookcases were missing. My brand new security equipment, still in the box it came in, was missing. The lead said he had seen it in the truck and would bring it to me. He never did. Expensive waste baskets for the home were all gone. A complete patio set was missing. A file cabinet with personal documents (birth certificates, college transcripts, passports) had disappeared. Too many other small things--decorative, clothing, furniture, appliances--were missing to name. Furniture in the shed should have been put in the house and vice versa. I had done a complete written inventory in advance, which I gave to the senior manager, noting what was supposed to come over, how, and where to put it. It was never read by anyone. I was made to go to my storage shed with the estimator, after spending an entire Saturday with my daughter doing the written inventory. The estimator took wild guesses at what I had, which were wrong. At the end, I was forced to sign a form saying everything had been performed as I desired, or the lead said I would not get reimbursed for the extra time I had paid for. I signed, not knowing at the time that the house and yard were in such disarray. I asked for a copy of it and was told it would be emailed. It never was. I never got the reimbursement, and I found out later I was supposed to get a senior citizen discount per their website which I never got. After I surveyed the yard and the house, I sat in my home the entire next day and didn't move. I felt violated. I had to pay another company for two guys for two days just to try to put things to rights. I was about the same as the first company--close to $2,000. They worked hard and ended up putting everything in the right rooms, but they couldn't fix all the missing and damaged things.
