Adam is the only contractor we would ever consider using. Over the past 15 years of home ownership, we have encountered numerous contractors with varying results and degrees of satisfaction. We finally found Adam and he will have to pry us away before we would ever utilize the services of anyone else. The bedroom remodel was a project on which we procrastinated for quite some time in large part because of a leak in the ceiling/roof. Because of the excellent experience we had with Adam on a previous bathroom remodel, we engaged him to remodel the bedroom. He is extremely pleasant to deal with. He gave us a reasonable quote for the job and came in on target. Adam always showed up on time, worked long hours, and cleaned up each day. He put up large sheets of plastic to contain the dust and debris and we never had any problems with such in the remainder of the house during the days of demolition and reconstruction. He brought in and oversaw a roofing crew that successfully fixed a leak in the ceiling/roof that had gradually become significant over the years. He even had them redo the initial job because he wasn't satisfied with their first effort (at no additional cost). He suggested we expand the existing closet in the bedroom and install french doors; the resulting remodel was better than we could have imagined. Adam is no mere handyman...he has an engineering and educational background as well that serves for larger projects. But he is also a perfectionist when it comes to smaller jobs such as a bedroom remodel. We were delighted with the overall outcome. I can't recommend him highly enough.
Description of Work: Adam and his crew completely remodeled a bedroom, including demolition and removal of old plaster and lath, installation of new electrical wiring and plugs, expansion of an existing closet, covering of closet interior with cedar, installation of french doors, and painting of closet and bedroom. In addition, Adam was able to investigate and fix a leak in the roof that had been an ongoing problem of some significance.

We interviewed several contractors for this work. Except for Adam, they all fell into two categories. One set would just say "Tell me what you want me to do, and I'll do it." These contractors weren't right for us because it was a big job, and we didn't know enough about contacting to give detailed explanations. The other set of contractors would show up (late, usually), then try to steer the work towards what was advantageous to them. Adam was very different. From the very beginning, it was clear that his primary concern was to determine what was best for *our* project in *our* home. Adam started the work on time. He was always very easy to reach if we had concerns or questions. Both Adam and his subcontractors were very honest; we never had the slightest hesitation about having them in our home while we were away at work. Adam's work had very little disruption in our home; he did an excellent job of limiting the construction mess - both inside and outside the house. He showed excellent judgement - both while determining some of the engineering aspects of the job and while suggesting some of the design parts of the job. Finally, he finished on time, at the contracted price. Most importantly, throughout all of the work, it was clear that Adam's genuine interest was the health, safety, and convenience for our family. Everyone hears nightmare stories about contractors. They start jobs but don't finish them. They deliberately underbid, then use change orders to unfairly increase the price. They use shoddy materials or techniques. Adam is the complete opposite of these nightmares. Working with him was a dream.
Description of Work: Complete bathroom remodel, including significant upgrades to underlying plumbing, power and structural elements.

From Start to finish Adam gave us a clear estimate in price and stuck to it! He also gave us a time frame. Two weeks! To do major surgery on our house. Adam knew time was of the essence due to our family situation. We have three little boys, so this could not turn into the never ending remodel. We appreciated Adam as a stickler for safety, especially because of our small children. Adam was on the job everyday, and was in constant contact with us. I felt completely comfortable leaving our home in his hands. Adam never over promises and always out performs!! His workers are polite and cleaned up the work site daily. Adam goes above and beyond and you can see it in the finished product. The transformation was unbelievable! He stayed on budget, and finished a day early! Adam is what working with a contractor should be like. It was a fabulous first experience in the construction arena for our family. Adam is our contractor for life! He has already been back to consult on future projects. His knowledge of engineering and design are invaluable. To see the transformation of our home visit his website. It doesn't come better than this, truly. The Baker Family
Description of Work: Adam personally came in and gave an estimate to restructure the front rooms of our dated home, into one large, modern great-room. That involved taking down two walls, supporting the structure from above, ripping up carpet, relocating a dishwasher, taking out an old fashioned booth in the kitchen, re-routing a dryer vent, recessed lighting, electrical, painting and installing laminate flooring. Adam is beyond thorough. Adam is an eloquent, knowledgeable, punctual, perfectionist. Adam does it right the first time, and takes pride in his craft. He means what he says and says what he means. The real silver lining above all the great qualities he possesses as a craftsman, is his integrity. I know if a variable presents itself, Adam will fix the problem efficiently and economically. He charges a fair price, and doesn't take advantage of a homeowners ignorance when it comes to construction.

Adam spent over an hour examing our entire house for leaks and structural problems.(Plus 40 minutes of travel time.) He told us that we did not have structural damage, thus saving us lots of money and time. Although I offered to compensate him for his time and expert evaluation, he declined any payment. His engineering expertise and integrity make him my first choice for any contracting work in the future.
Description of Work: We had conflicting reports on how to fix our roof from different roofing companies. I saw Adam listed on Angie's List as a contractor and an engineer and asked him to come to our house to see if we needed major structural repairs before fixing our roof. He was in the middle of another project, but graciously came out a few days later to evaluate our roofing woes.

I'd met Adam a few years ago when he came out to give me ideas about some stucco repair and painting I needed done. He made a fantastic first impression, though at the time the job was a wee bit small for him and he was pretty busy, so he recommended one of his subcontractors (who, no surprise, also did an excellent job). Still, the time and the care Adam took to think things through out loud with me, to explain what he would do and why, stuck with me and I keep his contact information handy because I knew I would want to work with him in the future. This time, the initial meeting went just as well as that first one and Adam started work for me a few days later. Adam does what he says he's going to do, shows up on time if not slightly early and comes in on budget and on time (if not hours or days earlier). He's extremely honorable and trustworthy. He's also considerate and respectful in a way that's almost old-fashioned, both to his clients and to his workers. Adam has the brain of an engineer and the soul of a craftsman. He's constantly weighing his problem solving skills against practical details and aesthetic considerations. He takes as much pride in the look and finish of his work as he does in the structural integrity. Adam is especially skilled at communicating with his clients. I don't think I've ever worked with any contractor who was so adept at explaining what he was doing at every step of the process, answering my questions and keeping me up to date on the progress of the work and on any small problems he'd encountered or little changes he'd suggest. Honestly, I felt like Adam was treating my house as if it were his own. Even with other skilled contractors, they usually do more or less what was agreed to beforehand. Adam does all that and more. He doesn't just want to do the work well, he wants it to be the best it can be.
Description of Work: Adam reinforced and braced some concrete staircases for me on a 1922 stucco duplex in Silver Lake. The slabs are somewhere in the neighborhood of 50-100 years old and had starting leaning and cracking to the point where, left untreated, they would have become a hazard. But it would have cost as much as my car to tear down and rebuild, so Adam came up with a safe, structurally sound, cost effective and practical solution that will allow us to get some good more years out of the stairs. This included retrofitting the stairs with steel bars and braces, which were custom fabricated to his order. Adam also did some exterior stucco patching and painting and fully repainted the interior (walls, trim, ceiling) of one of my apartment units.

I got Adam's name and number from Angie's list and called him the first or second week of March. He quickly returned my call, I told him what work I needed done, and he came by the next day to check out the project. He was prompt and professional, answered all of my questions along with asking me quite a few, and then offered several suggestions and options for me to consider. He gave me a rough estimate of the cost, and by the next morning had sent me a contract and said he could start the job the following Monday. On Sunday he came by to take another look at the room and at that point, we changed our minds about a few things (windows, doors, bookshelves) and revised the plan. We then discussed tile and paint and went to Lowe's and Home Depot to pick out tile, ceiling fan, light, etc. Adam was very paitient while I made decisions on tile and paint while he was conscientiously keeping the schedule he had set out to complete. His two workers, Sergio and Miguel, could not have been more friendly and professional. They finished the job in the two weeks Adam had set aside, and I could not be more pleased with the results. Along the way, Adam came up with more ideas and finishing touches, which was such a welcome change from any previous contractors I've encountered. I will defnitely call him when I want my bathroom and kitchen remodeled--he is creative, intelligent, talented and dependable--and definitely worth the money.
Description of Work: Remodeled an existing room in the back yard that is structurally attached to a two-car garage-- removed exisiting drywall and paneling; installed additional ceiling joists to make ceiling level; framed a walk-in closet and installed shelving, a light and an exhaust fan; installed a ceiling fan, finished carpentry and floor tile; planed existing French doors for proper operation and installed air vents for exhaust fan; primed and painted.

If you are a Los Angeles area homeowner who has utilized a contractor, you?ve probably determined that it is sometimes a rough and tumble environment. Like the Old West, it can be a land where lawless, shady characters peddle their goods and services across the vast Basin to unsuspecting townsfolk. The closest law enforcement is the Contractors State License Board?the sheriff if you will?but they soldier a heavy burden and aren?t exclusively interested in protecting your claim. In short, it is truly caveat emptor when it comes to vetting and signing an agreement with a contractor. Conversely, I bet if you asked licensed contractors they would contend that homeowners seek them out BECAUSE they are licensed for their trade but frequently expect work to be done on a dime. In fact, more often than not the property owner has unreasonable expectations for what licensed/insured labor costs to perform correctly to applicable code. Somewhere in the middle the two sides must meet, though, to successfully complete the project. Which brings me to Adams Home Builders? Adam Othman is a consummate professional who takes pride in the work he performs. It?s not simply ______ (fill in your job description), but instead another opportunity to apply his vast skills and problem solving abilities to satisfy the client. My first meeting with him began with a handshake and a quick tour of the prospective job site. Simple enough. I then found myself in his car, however, venturing to another job site that was nearing completion. (He wanted to show me what Hardi-backer exterior siding would look like in a Craftsman installation.) Further, the customer at this location was more than glad to break out his iPad and show me the job from start to finish. He heartily recommended Adam. I knew then Adam had the skills to perform the task, but had to check other bids for pricing. When compared to the other estimates I obtained, Adam was the 2nd highest of the bunch. One was more and two were less. Some of what drove the higher bid, however, was the use of a full-blown architect to develop the plans for approval. As this was an unfinished garage, I felt this cost would not actually be seen in the end product. Additionally, I could have used either of the two lower estimates, but this is where the age-old adage of cost vs. value comes into play. Sure, they cost less but would this then translate into a structure that would develop issues over time? Granted, I was having an unfinished garage built and not livable space, but again, any money spent should return positive value regardless of the scope of the work. Also influencing my decision was that Adam takes one job at a time. Yes, the owner of the company and General Contractor is on the job site. Every. Single. Day. And because of this, the construction schedule is airtight. When he tells you framing will be done by Friday, he means Friday. In short, he tells you what he will do and does it correctly and to applicable code. Period. I ultimately chose Adam because I knew the garage would be constructed better than my house and would yield a positive return (ie, no structural defects) on the investment. In fact, every step of the way we spoke and cut back on expenses where possible. This smart allocation of spending is also an indication that Adam has your (checkbook?s) back. Obviously he has to make money on the project, but he finds common ground and attempts to spend your money wisely. I have a slew of projects I was going to DIY because of some poor contracting in the past. Now, however, I will at least obtain estimates from Adam and let the pros handle it if it makes sense. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
Description of Work: Constructed a 16'Wx23'L Craftsman garage from the ground up. Connected the garage via a 2'x3' foot graded and sloped driveway to an existing concrete pad on site.

Adams Home Builders suggested I look at some of his jobs and talk to the individuals who used him which is impressive because he is very confident in his work. He wanted me to get a good idea of how good his work was and to get an idea of what my addition would look like. Their professionalism was great, they were always on time and Adam(the owner) was here overlooking everything daily. He always kept in touch with me on what he was doing and it was all very easy.
Description of Work: I hired Adams Home Builders for an addition to my house plus some electrical and plumbing in already existing parts. To the entire house, he did brand new siding, insulation, and exterior painting. The last thing he did was add a patio canopy to the house.

He only handles one main job at a time, so is on the job site at least 75% of the time, ensuring quality and efficient crew supervision. He is very professional, and charges a fair and reasonable fee for the full attention he gives your house. I visited him on his previous job site and was able to observe first hand how he works. He is really good, very honest and has the homeowners interest in mind. He has strong referral network for new jobs.

We had Adam do an add-on to our home about 2 years ago. At that time we considered a skylight in one of our bathrooms, but decided against it, until now. Adam came out and looked at the house and our request for a skylight. He also checked the status of all of the previous work. We pointed out some minor grout issues on the tile in the kitchen and bathroom. He pointed out that these were part of a normal "settling" of new construction. We scheduled the day of work. Adam and Sergio, his helper who also worked with Adam on our previous project, arrived on time and set to work. In one day they installed the new skylight - amazing difference in lighting- and repaired the grout and tile issues. In addition, Adam looked for the source of leaks we had experienced from a previous roofing job. Adam did some roof caulking in possible problem areas. He also remedied a potential problem we had with the seal around our kitchen sink. This was work done by another contractor and not Adam's responsibility, but he did it anyway. And, surprisingly, he notice that the front doorbell connection was not working and replaced and repaired that. At the end of the work, Adam patiently explained to me all they had found and all the work that was done. My wife arrived home during the explanation, and he thoroughly explained everything again. Adam did all this work for nearly the same price he had quoted us for the skylight alone almost 2 years ago. We consider Adam to be our "family contractor", based on his committment, personally and professionlly I think, to make sure a job is done right and at a fair price. And our experience is that he will be back to make sure all the work holds up and works right. Based on our experience of Adam's quality of work, honesty and committment to our satisfaction (and his) with all the work done and fair prices, I would not hesitate to call him for future work.
Description of Work: Installed a new bathroom skylight. Retouched grout around tile in the kitchen and also the bathroom. Replaced a cracked tile in the shower. Repaired slight separation of kitchen sink to counter. Checked roof for possible problem areas and caulked in some places. Replaced our front door doorbell connection.

Thanks to other members on Angie's List - we found a great egg! A few months back we were crazy enough to willingly purchase a home WITHOUT a garage - no existing foundation to build upon, nothing. Who does this?!? Apparently, we do and it was definitely meant to be, because we have now found our general contractor who will be doing ALL our projects around the house. Adam?s initial price felt high so we did our due diligence of soliciting bids from other contractors, five to be precise. In the end - Adam proved the most genuinely interested. Since this was our first-ever viable need for anything requiring a G.C. we needed that enthusiasm - not the "been there, done that" attitude we received from others. Enthusiasm aside, Adam's Construction and Engineering was attractive to us for a variety of reasons: he has access to a junior draftsman, so we were saved from hiring an architect; secondly, he has a true love for the Craftsman period, which showed with the choices he made; lastly, he is licensed for engineering as well as landscaping, which means he took other issues into consideration. His attention to detail for a project like ours was a great testimony to all we expect in the future - if he puts forth this much concrete (25 cubic yards), stem-wall rebar (3 layers) and effort for "just a garage" - we can't wait to see what he'll do for us on the inside of our home. As for choosing those details firsthand, ever have a G.C. go shopping with you? Adam did so, and on more than one occasion. The first time was before we even broke ground - we found these fabulous entry doors at a salvage store. Since Adam would need to build custom frames for them, he wanted to give his thumbs up. The second time was for a small electric hot water heater and a laundry tub, but we think that was "client intervention.? Construction stress and making decisions "on the fly" finally got the better of us. In the end, with only a minimal delay due to our choice of windows, and the unwelcome surprise of needing a new main water line, the garage (including a half bath) was built in record time. He delivered a quality product within the time requested and we now have the missing link we needed on our property, which allows us to move forward onto other projects.
Description of Work: The Mission - and he chose to accept it - to build a Craftsman Era garage on a sloping property with drainage issues and sand for a backyard. Our initial mandate was to have the garage look like it had been there all along. In retrospect it's an impractical directive (given it's almost twice as large as any garage built during the period), but it gave us a good jumping off point and conveyed the concept well enough - the external cosmetic efforts should match the house. He achieved that mandate so well when the final inspection came about, the lead inspector was comparing the garage to the house as if we were an actual "Mills Act" home. We were pretty impressed.

When Adam came out to provide an estimate on a Friday, he was courteous, professional and helpful. He provided a thorough evaluation of the work we wanted done, and even gave his advice on areas we weren't planning on having done. He said he would provide an estimate by Monday. The week went by with no estimate. At the end of the week, I called back. I think he was on the line but there was so much static, I said I would call right back. I did, and received his voicemail. I left a message asking for an eta on the estimate. More than one week after the walkthrough, we still have not heard back from him. It's very perplexing why he never got back to us, since he was initially so professional. We were interested in using his services because of this meeting and his positive reviews, but unfortunately he failed to deliver on the estimate.
Description of Work: No services were performed. An estimate was never provided.

Overall it was excellent, I'd consider Adam for any future work.
Description of Work: Adam came out for an estimate. Spent an hour explaining the details of the work I was considering. Talked me out of most of it. Turns out the job is not as big as I thought (or feared). It's even a bit too small for him now. But his obvious professionalism, excellent communication and patience with me the first-time homeowner puts him at the top of my list for the next big job I do have.

IT WAS FANTASTIC. THE REPAIR WAS MUCH BETTER THAN PREVIOUS BUILDER 12 YEARS PRIOR. THE PATIO DECK IS BETTER THAN WHEN I BOUGHT THE HOUSE 20 YEARS AGO. ADAM FOLLOWED THE WORK SCHEDULE AND FINISHED ON TIME. OLD FASHIONED WORK ETHICS OF DOING THE BEST WITHOUT TAKING THE EASY SHODDY SHORT CUTS, OF WHICH I HAVE EXPERIENCED TOO MUCH OF.
Description of Work: REPAIR OF STRUCTURAL FAILURE OF CANTILEVERED DECK IN BACK OF HOUSE. PATIO DECK, 30 FEET ABOVE GROUND, FAILING DUE TO WOOD ROT. REBUILDING OF CENTRAL SUPPORT AND UNDERSTRUCTURE. ADDITIONAL SUPPORT (STEEL POST ). ADDED.

Adam and his helper, Sergio, were superb! They were punctual, polite, very professional, and they worked very cleanly. Adam gave us a progress report whenever it was appropriate to do so. He listened to our concerns and did his best to meet and exceed them. He offered many good suggestions to us as the work progessed. And, when Adam and Sergio finished the job quality was better than we expected. I would definitely have him work on our home in the future. In fact, I'd prefer it.
Description of Work: Adam did the reconstruction for us after some mold remediation. As part of the reconstruction, he replaced part of a wall and part of a ceiling in our family room. He also built a new closet for us, moved our attic access to a new location and relocated some recessed lighting. He finished the job with new crown molding and a new paint job in the family room and hallway. He also replaced some bad sub-flooring, installed a new toilet, and tiled a floor for us in a bathroom.
