The estimator arrived on the agreed upon date and time. He measured the area. My mother is elderly and does not have a computer. She asked for photos or sample of materials. These were not provided on the first visit. My mother was interested in: a white painted picket fence similar to what a neighbor has, and pointed it out to the estimator. She also expressed interest in vinyl fencing material and cedar wood. The estimator provided my mother with a verbal ball-park estimate of $1200 to $1400. The estimator told my mother that vinyl yellows within 10 years and cannot be repainted. She therefore dropped that as an option and was only interested in estimates for a white painted picket fence and a cedar fence. The estimator claims my mother never told him this. The estimator told my mother he would return with sample materials and/or photos and a date and time was set. He never called, and never showed. Both the owner and the estimator deny this ever happened. In essence, they are calling an elderly woman a liar. My Mother received her written estimate yesterday. There were three options: #1 wooden fence: $4,120 option #2 vinyl (she already had said she did not want vinyl due to reason listed above) $4,666, and option #3 metal fence $3,158. When I phoned the company this morning for information/resolution, I spoke to the owner. He was nice at first. Then he got his estimator on speaker phone with me and essentially blamed us for any misunderstandings and tried to explain the considerable expense of the fence as being due to the need to cut large boards into smaller ones. I question why the estimator did not know this to begin with. The fence is urgently needed. It has been a nightmarish experience.Their behavior has placed undue stress on an elderly woman and made her cry. I find this unconscionable and inexcusable.
