+ -1 moreAlan was punctual and did not try to sell me anything I did not need. He used my equipment when he could - even my cables when he could just to save a little bit. He certainly knows what he is doing and takes care to give you the best surround sound experience and ensures you know how to actually work all your new equipment.
Description of Work: Alan, came out and assessed the pre-wiring for surround sound we had in the home we had just purchased. He also suggested equipment we would need and even suggested some existing equipment that we may be able to use, thus saving on cost. Alan, sent everything through on email with the associated costs. The only items I had to do independently were to buy a TV , DVD player and stand, but even with these, I sent the models I was considering via email to Alan and he gave me his feedback/thoughts. In the end, I purchased a Samsung plasma TV (plasma at Alan's suggestion) and LG Blue Ray player - Alan sent through the exact model to get for that one. The Hook Up provided outdoor patio speakers, super-woofer, amp, center speaker, IPOD connector and connected everything to my TV, etc. We ended up using my existing amp to run the patio and game room speakers, so they can be run independently - I would never have thought of that. Alan also provide a Harmony remote to replace all the other remotes so I can use only 1. He then showed me how to use everything !

Prior to installation, he was willing to discuss by phone various remote controls with us and encouraged us to use the Internet to find the best price for our choice. Installation was totally professional. Result is profound--one remote for everything! When we were preparing to leave for the summer, we called him again, and he provided us with advice regarding summer shut down.

He worked well and was very thorough and willing to do what ever needed to be done. He is pleasont to have in one's home and I would happily call him again. He is a real find !!
Description of Work: examined and assessed the problems with my stereos and TVs in two different rooms readjusted wires enabling the sound system to work with the TV music found that the dvd did not work and enabled the alternate machine to be the central machine in the second room -- discovered that the dvd/stereo was faulty and purchased a new machine and installed it. reajusted all to work well The Best thing he did was to clearly write out the directions so that I can run the equiipment in both rooms

+ -1 moreAlan was prompt, professional and very knowledgeable. He spent plenty of time getting to know our needs before making recommendations. He even saw opportunities we had not considered, ie. Apple TV, 2-zone set-up. The day after his initial visit he emailed us with equipment options. He obtained the equipment within 2 days and installed it on the 3rd day. Alan was very methodical in the way he went about installing each piece of equipment & thorough about testing each completely. Although Alan explained our new equipment before leaving, when we needed additional help the following day, he was quick in responding & walked us through solutions.
Description of Work: Alan recommended the appropriate equipment & setup for surround sound installation. This included researching & purchasing a receiver, sub-woofer, Apple TV & center channel speaker for us. He installed all of it & integrated the equipment for use by one Harmony remote. (The cost listed above does not include equipment costs, only Alan's time, which was money well-spent!)

Description of Work: The converters in my family room weren't getting all the channels, so he checked them. Found out it was the TV antenna. He hooked up a regular rabbit ear antenna since he does not do antenna work.

About 15 minutes after he left he called and told me he could get the components I needed and come back and install them immediately. I agreed and within an hour he was back and had me up and running again. Excellent service with a level of competence that is not easily found. Great job.
Description of Work: Hooked up and exisiting sound system in my condo. Also installed a new receiver and DVD player and showed me in detail how to work the controllers.

+ -1 moreAlan arrived early, after calling to see if that was OK. I had also talked to Alan several times and got his opinion on receivers and universal remotes (I had to purchase both). He was very helpful and knowledgeable. I watched him the entire time, and his work was incredible. He knew exactly the best way to proceed every step. I was VERY impressed with his programming of the remote. Not for the faint of heart. I know that Alan really cares about his work and I will call him whenever I have problems with the system. Also, his price was very fair. The majority of the cost was for equipment that he provided. A very good experience.
Description of Work: I just moved into my house and Alan put together my stereo and TV systems. This included wiring all of the systems together, programming the universal remote, and wiring in the built-in speakers already installed in the house.

+ -1 moreAlan came out first, at no charge, to look at the equipement and to verify that he could do what we wanted him to do. He then scheduled an appointment to come back to complete the work. He arrived on time and during the course of the day, checked in with me to make sure things were exactly the way I wanted them. When he was finished, he took the time to explain how everything worked. He was excellent to work with. He also reasurred me that I could call with any questions.
Description of Work: Alan hooked up all our our audio visual equipment in our new home. He also ran some new cables. Everything sounded and looked fantastic when he was finished!

+ -1 moreThe individual that showed up to hook up the converter box was very patient with me. He showed me how to operate the television set, and he was very patient in answering all of my questions. He was very professional and very courteous. I don't catch on easily to operating technical equipment, but he went over and reviewed how to operate the converter box and he showed me how to check it if I need to after the June deadline for the digital TV switch. If I need to rescan to program, he showed me how to do that. I would give him high marks in customer satisfaction and would definitely use him again.
Description of Work: On the telephone, Allen Brown recommended what he thoguht was a good brand of converter box for my TV to convert it to an digital TV. I then scheduled an appointment and he came out and hooked up the converter box to my television set.

+ -1 moreAlan Brown, owner and technician, arrived exactly when promised and set to work on our home theater system. He installed speakers around the room, made sure all components were working properly and programmed the Harmony remote, which we purchased from him, to do everything we requested. He met a challenge when it came to programming the Harmony to allow my iPod to function through the home theater system, but stayed with the challenge until he solved it. Alan was extremely knowledgeable and made some helpful suggestions. He made sure we understood the remote before he left and he couldn't have been more pleasant to have in our home. I plan to continue using The Hook Up for all our future home theater needs.

+ -1 moreIt was absolutely outstanding. Allen Brown was the gentleman that came out. In terms of timeliness he was great. Allen's rates were by far the best. He even took time to explain how to operate each of the new setup's. The whole process took about 2 hours. I truly feel anyone would feel comfortable with Allen in their home. He stands by what he says and maintains a great repour with his clients.
Description of Work: They hooked up two converter boxes to older televisions. Also hooked up a new HDTV as well as a DVD player. They also installed a DVD/VCR combo to one of the older TV's as well as a VCR to the other old television.

Description of Work: I had some rear surround sound speakers that I was intending to install. Six months later I still hadn't got around to it when I noticed in the Dec/Jan issue of Angie's List an ad and or report on The Hookup. Alan, the owner and installer, called me back that same day and scheduled an appt. He not only installed the speakers but also made sure all the theatre components were properly wired, fixed a speaker that wasn't quite working, connect our Wii to the surround sound, and fine tune the Harmony Universal Remote I bought. In addition after asking him about the new blue ray DVD players, I decided to go and purchase one right then and had him install it. It works perfectly and makes the most out of my entertainment system. I would highly recommend Alan and The Hookup to install any entertainment systems or TV's. These days with all the new technology, it's well worth considering!

He teaches you and ensures that you know what you are doing. He is available to help and he is responsive to your calls. I think that his costs are right in line.
Description of Work: He installed a flat screen TV in a cabinet and hooked it up to the cable and sound system. He put everything on a universal remote. He installed a flat screen TV to a wall in the office and put a regular TV in my bedroom. He encases the cords and hooks everything to the cable. I don't recall the cost.

He gave me some suggestions on DVR vs TIVO and on upgrading my theater system. He cleaned up completely after the installation and did an excellent job.
Description of Work: He actually came earlier than the appointment was set for, at my request. He installed HD TV, home theater, Blue Ray and ran wires for speakers. He was very knowledgeable and had a few suggestions on equipment.

+ -1 moreAlan has always done a great job for us, whether it was helping us buy a new TV or rewiring our entire home theatre system from scratch. He's an expert in his field, is always professional, courteous and can be depended on to be prompt and have better prices than anyone we've found.
Description of Work: Our system played VCR tapes, but we were unable to get sound. (Our grandchildren are coming for a visit and we knew cartoon tapes (with sound) would be major requirement for for their happiness - if not ours). We've used The Hook Up several times and, as usual, Alan Brown (the owner) scheduled us within 2 days of our call and, as usual, showed up exactly on time. Alan immediately diagnosed the problem as a missing cable and within 15 minutes had the VCR working.

Description of Work: We lost our audio on part of our home entertainment system. Alan came out the same day that I placed the phone call. He replaced a cable and our audio was working again. He went through our entire system to make sure everything was working correctly, and he made changes to enhance our picture and sound. We were using two remotes to operate our system, so he programmed our Bose remote to handle everything. He instructed me on the changes he made.

After he left it was actually better than I had expected it to be. I asked him about a cd player that was no longer working, so I asked if he did work on those and he said no so he suggested someone and actually took it to them and offered to return it to me. That was a nice plus.

+ -1 moreI was an Angie's List virgin and found Alan at The Hook Up under stereo/home theater. Ok...I have a system that we paid major $$$ for and it needed some tweaking. Speakers not quite right, remote outdated, Elan system (I needed help). Alan was amazing...not only did he fix, answer, and help with every question, but he did it amazingly well, quickly, and in a way that I could understand. He knows his stuff. I am thrilled. Every now and then you find someone with a passion for their field...Alan is it. Don't even bother calling someone else if you are considering an entertainment purchase or repair. I only wish I knew about him 7 years ago when we were building our home. Thank you!!!! I will call him again when we are ready for our next audio/visual purchase or HOOK UP!!!! A+

After long periods of being transferred, and no one in either store actually available to talk to me, I checked Angie's List and found The Hook Up. No hassles, transfers, waiting lists ... I left one voice mail message which was returned promptly. He showed up five minutes before our appointment time, fixed my problem pronto (and extremely cost-effectively) and enhanced my home system in one hour. The work was excellent, absolutely everything was fully explained, and I feel that I have discovered the East Valley's littlest known secret for home theater / sound systems !!
Description of Work: My home theater surround sound suddenly went out, and I couldn't begin to troubleshoot this myself with the multitude of cables etc. The Hook Up had my surround sound up-and-running in less than one hour after arriving, plus fine-tuned many of the system's features (setting the system for optimal watching / listening from where I usually sit, getting the base going (it had been turned off somehow), and miscellaneous other improvements that dramatically boosted my enjoyment of the system. For the first time since owning the system, I am experiencing my home system as a *theater* very cool!!
