+ -1 moreI contacted The Hook Up after finding the listing in Angie's List. I talked to him over the phone and was told about what the cost would be and we set up a time. As it turned out, I was not able to get home from work before he arrived, but my wife was there. The installation was complete within an hour and the cost was exactly what I was told. The cost was about 1/3 what I have been quoted in the past to have my system hooked up. In addition I was told about some problems I was having with my cable service (of which I was unaware) and a few other tips. Bottom line, if I have any additional home theater needs this will be the only place I call.
Description of Work: I had my Bose system hooked up with my TV, cable, and DVD player.

Improved system functionality including adjusting sounds through speaker system / receiver. Worked extra to help resolve issue with cable box. Have complex (for me) system with Pronto remote, and have been frustrated trying to use. Alan simplified some things and educated me on use. Awesome service - better than I could have expected. Don't call anyone else!

+ -1 moreAlan consulted me in TV selection and pricing. I ended up getting an excellent quote from Alan with smooth delivery assurance. Had it not been for him I might have had the television wall mounted which in my case is much less desirable. His pre-delivery advice and counsel were as important as his actual installation services. The installation went very smoothly, with the result that I have been totally pleased with the television from moment one. I am having Alan return though, because local PBS is not available in high definition, and now that I am enjoying HDTV, I am having him come out to install a simple solution that will provide PBS in HD.
Description of Work: Delivered and installed 58 inch plasma flat screen TV.

Alan arrived early for his appointment and was waiting in his truck when I arrived. He proceeded to set everything up and clearly knew what he was doing. He also explained everything to me and told me repeatedly to call him if I had any questions when I start to use the equipment. Alan was very professional, courteous, and a pleasure to work with. I will definitely use The Hook Up for all my future home theatre needs.
Description of Work: Hired The Hook Up to set up my new 50" HDTV, a new Sony home theatre system, and program a Harmony Universal remote control. Alan set up the new HDTV and connected it to the Sony home theatre system running all the wires through the existing openings in the drywall. The project cost of $150 included one digital optical cable that I had forgotten to buy.

+ -1 moreThe work went as expected and in a timely manner. Alan had the missing cables that I needed on hand, even though he did not know exactly what problems I had before he arrived to do the work. Once again, I was highly pleased with the work that was accomplished and would not hesitate to hire Alan in the future.
Description of Work: Alan wired my complicated home theater system. He was able to connect all the individual components so they worked in a cohesive manner. Alan also tuned and adjusted each of the components so they were operating at their highest audio and/or visual capabilities. He was prompt and arrived at scheduled appointment time. He was also very personable and explained everything that he was doing. I would not hesitate hiring Alan again. If you have home theater or stereo system connection problems, Alan can straighten them out. He is very knowledgeable and keeps up to date on current home theater/stereo equipment, so he can recommend applicable equipment to purchase. In conclusion, I was very pleased with the work that Alan performed.

+ -1 moreI can't recommend Alan enough. Besides diagnosing all the problems, and suggesting solutions that worked for our family, Alan was able to get great deals on the equipment that we needed. His fee is very fair. We will call him again in a minute the next time we want to do anything with our system, or if we are planning to add any new components.
Description of Work: Alan located the problem with our home theater system, fixed it, and then spent the better part of an hour answering my many questions about how to get our complicated system to work more effectively and easily. He also tweaked our system to give us much better reception and a more satisfying movie sound experience. I was so impressed with his expertise and professional attitude that I had him come out a week later to put into place the solutions we had discussed. He suggested various options at different price levels, which I greatly appreciated. We got a second amplifier for our outdoor speakers, an outdoor remote, and a universal remote for inside. We can now listen to music outside while someone is watching TV/DVD or listening to other music inside -- also, now if we want to play the same music inside and outside for a party, we can set the levels properly. The universal remote has made our lives so much easier, and now everyone can easily fire up anything in the system.

Alan arrived on time, analyzed the need, did the necessary work, didn't try to up sell or oversell, and charged a fair price which was significantly less than what the (generally un or under-educated) big box stores would charge. Very pleased.
Description of Work: Alan "hooked up" two televisions: one to an A/V System, a CD player, a VCR/DVD Combo and DirecTV and the other to a VCR, a DVD player and DirecTv.

He came over & verified my wires were correctly set up, but the audio setting my TV was set up incorrectly & that solved the problem. That took less than 10 minutes. So he set up my remote to be more user friendly & anything else he could within an hour.
Description of Work: My Bose 321 Wasn't working when I was watching Satellite TV. I had spent 5 hours with three different people trying to help me get it working (including the satellite installer).

+ -1 moreAlan returned my initial call within hours and was at my home the next day promptly at the time we had agreed to review my needs and give me an estimate. He spent an hour going over my system and made several wiring adjustments which improved both sound and picture quality and rewired the DVD/VCR unit to permit me to burn DVD's from DirecTV. During his service call, we discussed the benefits of using the Harmony universal remote and the next day, Alan was at my home again with the new remote which he programmed through my computer. He left instructions which enable me to add or delete any components in the future. I had purchased the turntable Alan had recommended, but was unable to get it to work properly and Alan quickly diagnosed the problem and made a few adjustments to my amplifier/receiver which corrected the problem.
Description of Work: Alan rewired my DVR/VCR Recorder, enabling us to record to DVD from our DirectTV satellite hookup; additionally we purchased from Alan, a Harmony 670 universal remote, which Alan programmed to operate every one of the components in our home entertainment system, thus eliminating the need to use 6 remotes. I have a large collection of vinyl records and Alan suggested a turntable for my use in transferring the tracks to my computer so that I can burn CD's.

+ -1 moreEverything went perfectly. If you are thinking of calling someone else, STOP and listen to me. Call Alan. This guy is absolutely fantastic and a very decent guy who sits and explains everything and doesn't make you feel that you're imposing on him. I was lucky to find him.
Description of Work: Alan and I discussed what TV to get and I decided on a 50 inch Plasma, plus a combination DVD/VCR Recorder. Alan actually went out and got the Panasonic for me and delivered it to my home along with everything else He was prompt and extremely knowledgeable and set up everything correctly. He than explained everything to me in detail. He took his time since I know nothing about these things. In other words this guy knows what he's talking about. When I messed something up and called him he came over that day to take care of it. The $2500.00 is as follows: $1900 for the TV, $200 for the DVR/VCR Recorder, cables and a surge, plus taxes and his fee. All in all, considering his expertise and professionalism and follow up, he did not charge for deliver, etc. I got a bargain.

+ -1 moreI was extremely impressed with Alan's professional skills, punctuality, and knowledge. His prices were very reasonable. Alan does an excellent job in explaining how to operate remote. After installation, it was necessary for me to program new Cox box. I emailed Alan and he provided me with step by step instructions on programming new box (with in 24 hours!)
Description of Work: Alan converted all remotes into one remote (Harmony H-650). He was extremely prompt and performed the job in the estimated amount of time. Alan had some trouble shooting barriers which he resolved quickly.

+ -1 moreI had been trying unsuccessfully (in spite of instruction books, etc.) to hook up my DVD, TV, etc., after moving. Although I have done it multiple times, I could not get both the cable AND the DVD to work smoothly; only one or the other would function without major wire and other machinations. In frustration I called Alan for assistance. He was extremely helpful and efficient once he got to my house; he is so popular, though, I had to wait several days for an appointment! He spoke regular (non-"Geek") language and helped me understand what was going wrong. He was personable and friendly, much more accessible than the "help" line at Cox. :-) They mean well, but they can't see what you are staring at in your very own house. Alan can, and helps you undo any technological confusion you have. Well, almost all. I will ask him back to set up the rest of my things when I get them!
Description of Work: Helped connect my DVD so that the Cable would also still work. Also reviewed my room situation and gave suggestions for home theater system when I am ready to upgrade.

+ -1 moreAlan is a real pro and a joy to work with. He worked with me for several months giving me free advice on what pieces of equipment to buy. This allowed me the time to piece the system together and research prices. Alan worked with my oddball schedule and came to my house on a Saturday. He showed up a little early and phoned ahead to let me know he was on his way. When it was all said and done I was charged exactly what he had estimated and truth be known he could have charged a little more for his time, but he rounded in my favor instead. My system is doing what I want now and with only one remote! My wife was not to thrilled about my project, but when she found that the new Harmoney remote replaced EIGHT other remotes she was ecstatic. That Remote is worth its weight in gold and Alan is an expert at programming the darn thing. If you don't use Alan for anything you should at least have him consolidate you remotes. I am giving my parents the gift of Alan to fix their system!
Description of Work: Alan installed new equipment that I had purchased. He optimized the wiring and adjusted my HDTV for peak performance. He programed my harmony remote control and provided instruction on how to work everything.

+ -1 moreHe took my flat-panel HDTV out of its box, hooked it up to the cable DVR, CD player, DVD player/VCR player and recorder, a new receiver, and new speakers (which he provided). He sat down with me to lead me through every feature and how they all work and corrected some of the notes I had taken on how to operate and run each component. Everything works, even though I need 3 remotes for it now. But when I return from Christmas, he will install a universal remote to control ALL components and teach me how to use that remote with the entire system. He asked if I wanted to replace the black cable that comes into the house and down the wall with a white cable that would blend with the wall, and of course, I do. He made notes on his PDA to remind him what he needs for his next call after Christmas.
Description of Work: Alan hooked up my new 26'' HDTV along with several components (5-disc CD player, DVD/VCR player, Cable DVR), plus 2 new speakers and a new Sherwood receiver that he provided (at added cost, of course).

For those of us who don't have HUGE home theater systems that the big guys work on...you know, those of us who still have nice units and need repair, some assistance and training? Alan is amazing. He was prompt, courteous and so helpful. He fixed my main system, then set up a system in my bedroom and was in and out along w/some training that the other company's people didn't take the time to do for me. I never knew how easy some of this stuff was! He did it all in less than an hour. I highly recommend him.

He also assured us we could call him & he would be happy to answer any new questions we might have. We were very happy with his service & will definitely call him again when/if the need arises.

He even showed me how to use my camcorder connected to the DVD recorder to transfer my old home movies to DVD. I can't wait to start creating DVD's of all the precious family memories. ALAN HELPED ''HORSE'' THE 100 POUND+ TV INTO A SPACE BARELY ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE IT. HE WAS GREAT AT CONNECTING ALL THE COMPONENTS AND, EVEN BETTER, GREAT AT EXPLAINING IT ALL TO ME. HE DEFINITELY IS A BARGAIN AT THE RATES HE CHARGES. FUN TO TALK TO TOO. HE HAS ALREADY MADE THE ''PAGE OF HAPPINESS,'' BUT COULD EASILY QUALIFY AGAIN.
