Troy came to my house to give me an estimate on landscape (hardscapes and softscapes) in the back yard. He listened to our wants and then came up with creative suggestions and ideas and drew out a design. He broke down the costs of the quote. He was professional and friendly. He also brought some photos of other jobs they have completed for us to look at. I would use them in the future for any work we decide to have done.

We had more done. We used the Big Deal for 15 hours and then we had them do more work on the same day. So I guess I would say they stuck to their quote.

h i guess i expected the company to place the tubing as it should be if working properly, as it is just laying all over the yard and not near any plants or tree
Description of Work: responded to call to preform services. coming on thursday 3/27, unable to review until work is done. on time, stated he wasne in irrigation but in area so was sent to do estiment. i assumed he would check and see if all areas were watered as should be. due to a small leak was unable to check and only left an estimate for 848.88 to replace and repair. set timer and said would run 30 min. 3 times a week. after i fixed the leak water will still not run. was left with an estimate and nothing else. the gentleman was very nice.

I called to schedule the appointment for a weekend the technician didn't show up. I called the scheduler to inform her and she researched the issue and informed me that she forgot to check to see if the technician received the new appointment. She provided a genuine apology and promptly offered to reschedule. Mistakes do happen and I greatly appreciate when service providers offer honest genuine apologies. Jeremiah arrived at my home and greeted me with a smile. He proceeded to inspect the sprinkler system both the timer, drips and valves. Jeremiah discoverd that my drip system was not shutting off properly and quickly discoverd that one of the diaphragms in a sprinkler valve was cracked and needed to be replaced. Jeremiah let me know that there is usually a cost for replacement of a valve. However, Jeremiah replaced the valve with one of the others in the system that was not in use saving me $200. Jeremiah really hit it out of the park and exceeded my expectations by fixing this for me at no charge. Jeremiah ended the job with a handshake and smile. I am a very pleased customer! I would encourage anyone with landscape needs to contact Masterscapes!
Description of Work: My sprinkler valve system was making a horrible noise which prompted me to purchase a Sprinker Tune-up from Masterscapes Landscaping. I assumed that I would just have the sprinkler system put on an automatic schedule and have the problem diagnosed. Services Received Drip system set on automatic schedule - included Inspected all drips - included Inspected valve system - included Replaced cracked valve diaphragm - bonus:-)

Nothing like I was expecting, thought the person would at least show my son what needed to be done.
Description of Work: Person came, looked around the front and back, showed my son how to turn off the sprinkler value and handed him an estimate for $4,000+. I didn't see him get down to look at the sprinkler heads or check on the current drip system. Big waste of good money!

The fellow came on time, was very polite and professional, and seemed quite helpful initially as he examined and diagnosed my system. But, other than resetting the watering times on my timer, he did not perform a tune-up as I envisioned. He did no work on my system at all. He pointed out sprinkler heads that would need replacing soon but, when I showed him the new sprinkler heads that I already had on hand, he refused to install them for me, saying they were substandard. Instead, he tried to sell me a new system or, at a minimum, new parts of his own brand, that were much more expensive than what I had and what I could afford. Although I insisted more than once that I could not afford to make the switch to his brand, nor did I see the sense in tossing out the brand new parts I had just purchased at Lowe's in order to use his brand instead, he persisted in trying to sell me a new more expensive system. As a small business owner, I can appreciate his enthusiasm; and I don't argue that the quality of his system was likely much better than my existing system. But a person can only afford what a person can afford. To tear out my whole working system to install his brand just was not a sensible move for me at the time. And when a customer says no, it should stop there. I felt pressured and embarrassed for not upgrading my "substandard" system to his brand. For that reason, doubtful I will use Masterscapes again.
Description of Work: I purchased the Masterscapes Sprinkler Tune-Up and Diagnosis with the hope and intention of getting a few heads adjusted directionally, maybe a valve or two tightened, etc. In my mind, that's a simple tune-up.

This company gets an A on hardscape but a C for the plants. The special price, offered through Angie's List, for plants is what prompted me to use this landscaper. The arborist has a good sense of design (which is better suited to a large house or commercial site rather than a small house). I would advise an individual to have another person present during the sales pitch. Quality of plants was average and most did not survive the first frost, which occurred before the second of two payments was made. However, two 15 gallon trees and five small plants in a protected planter (mine) did survive. The walkway and the irrigation installs were done professionally and in a timely manner. Two negatives - the paint on side of house was scorched while welding piping (not repainted) and the excavated dirt and stones from the paver install were left in a pile.

Asked for a sprinkler tuneup and all leaks fixed. While the original guy diagnosed everything ok, he did not come out to show the workmen what needed to be done. After the first day, they did not even fix an obvious blockage. No supervisor was there to check their work and we had to! That's why we hired them for $2400. They replace sprinkler heads which are expensive. They came back out and did an acceptable job. Had I read that they seem to do good work on major remodeling projects, but not on sprinklers, I would not have used them. I wouldn't use them again, but they corrected the problem pretty much and I paid them because we had agreed upon the price.

After the system inspection, there were a few small issues that needed to be addressed and one bigger issue. The minor issues were fixed, and we discussed the options for the major repair. It turned out that it was not my system, instead the issue related to the city water source. In the end, it was nice to hear what could be fixed and what could not. I will be going back to them for my future irrigation needs.

I was so impressed with the company representative's knowledge and so appreciated his advice that I asked him to come back for another estimate I needed for another home. My only complaint is that the services I received were no more than what I would have received if I would have called any landscaping company to come in and give me an estimate on fixing my sprinkler system. At the end, I felt as if I essentially paid a contractor to give me an estimate. This complaint is both against Angie's list and Masterscapes for being somewhat misleading.

Overall, it went very well. All of the employees, the contractor, the owner, and staff were very friendly, honest, and punctual when it came to accommodating what I was asking for and respecting the deadlines that I had. Mike came out and did an evaluation of what I was requesting to be done. He was able to get out there within one day of me calling which is awesome considering the amount of time I have spent trying to get contractors out to the house to give me an estimate on the job. Couple of days later, I received a quote from the owner himself for exactly what I needed to have done for the job and couldn't be happier.
Description of Work: Needed a quote for repairing some masonry, tearing out a patio, and adding some drainage.

Overall, it went OK. They were very confused and I would get a date and time from their office and another from the lead on the crew. This irritated me because twice I thought they were coming and boarded my dogs and they didn't show up so there was an additional cost to me. Also, they forgot things such as two trelises and 2 rose bushes (which they had mistakenly removed my own) and I withheld the final payment until I got the items.

My yard was in bad shape so I took advantage of Angie's list "Big Deal" from this company for 15 hours of yard work for $599. I explained to the salesperson who came for the consult what I wanted. I was shocked that he refused to do some of what I wanted like pruning some palm trees and transplanting a potted tree to a new pot. I was told the palm trees did not need pruning and the pot I wanted to put the tree into was too small and would require root scaling. What i was told I really needed was deep root fertilization for 8 trees at an additional cost of $625. It sounded impressive and the winter was tough on my yard, so I agreed to this additional service. The work was scheduled for a Saturday, between 9-10 AM. By noon the crew had not yet arrived so I called the office and left a message. I then left to do errands around 12:45. When I returned around 2PM the crew was there. The workers did a good job cleaning the place up. The yard looked like a different house when they were done. However, even assuming they arrived the moment I left (12:45 PM), the 3 man crew was finished by 4PM. By my count that's a little less than 10 hours combined work when I paid for 15 hours. There was additional work I wanted done, as I told the salesman at the time of the write-up, but that work was refused even though it was well within the terms of the agreement. The salesman is entitled to his opinion, but I'm still the customer. As bad as this was, that deep root fertilization that I paid $625 for took one worker no more than FIFTEEN minutes to perform. I watched him. Eight trees. FIFTEEN minutes. Including unreeling and re-reeling the hose and wand. $625 for FIFTEEN minutes work (and a few gallons liquid fertilizer and some fertilizer sticks. But it gets better. The next morning when I went out to see my nice clean yard, it was partially flooded because when the sprinkler/bubblers went on, there were so many broken underground /above ground lines from the workers' digging and raking and weeding the day before that it started to flood the yard. In summary: I paid for 15 hours labor and received about 10. Work I wanted done was refused even though it was well within the terms of the agreement. I agreed with no duress or pressure to pay an additional $625 for what turned out to be 15 minutes of work (I can't even call it "additional work" because I was still owed 5 hours from the "Big Deal.") My underground watering system was badly damaged. A corner of my yard was used as a urinal. I feel I was, no other way to put it, ripped off, period. There is no other way to describe it. Obviously I would never recommend this company to anyone. But, I also DO NOT recommend using Angie's List "Big Deals" unless a specific service for a specific price is identified (example: install new toilet for $100 labor only.) The problem with open ended Big Deals like the one I purchased is that the customer has no leverage since the price is not refundable. The merchant can get away with whatever he wants because you've already paid.

Description of Work: Re-do backyard. Removed all old flowers and bushes and replaced with all red flowers. Replaced 2 pigmy palms and tore out all the old brick border and grass and replaced with blush border where small area of grass will be. Moved in 10 tons of rock and workers were absolutely professional. They listened to what I wanted and work hard although Tommy was sick. He and his bud were so sweet and I will definately use them again if I needed to.

All facets of the experience - estimate meeting, execution of the work, and post-work followup - was timely and professional. It was a good experience overall.
Description of Work: Craig and team installed a paver walkway.
I spent months trying to find the right contractor to build me a beautiful Fountain Hills backyard patio living area, and after going back & forth over a number of different factors (price, style, professionalism, attention to detail, etc.), I elected to go with Masterscapes. I could not have been happier with the end result. This was a big project that involved engineering work, city approval, land regrading, flood zone water flow compliance, etc. Masterscapes worked terrificly with my personally-hired engineer to get the job done exactly the way I wanted it. They regraded the land, poured concrete, built a water flow flood zone retaining wall, and built a great backyard patio - complete with mexican adobe pavers, travertine built-in benches, a Kiva fireplace, a built-in BBQ grill, custom-finished gates and a stucco-finished wall. My backyard is now the envy of the neighborhood and a great place to entertain. Masterscapes was not the cheapest out there, but they charged me what I think was a fair price - and convinced me that they knew what they were doing - and would do it the way wanted. My dealings with them were fair and honest - and I can tell it meant a lot to them to make sure I was a satisfied customer - which I am.
Description of Work: Had complete backyard living area created...land regarded, concrete poured, benches, walls, kiva fireplace, BBQ grill...the works!

I ended up not going with Masterscapes. They were very responsive and returned my call within a couple of days. I asked them to come out for a quote. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the gentleman that came to our house, but overall he was in a hurry, sketched a quick template of our backyard and suggested plants, and in the end handed me a $3000 quote - which was WAY to much for the size and types of plants he suggested.

Company came out and replaced a defunct irrigation sprinkler controller. Worked for about a month and then quit working. Called them back and they immediately sent someone out and the diagnosed problem to be in the electric circuit. They recommended a great electrical contractor to fix the problem. Masterscapes stayed in contact with the electrical person and got the problem resolved. Was very impressed with their professionalism and willingness to "go the extra mile". Would highly recommend this company.

They were very responsive. In fact, Shane, my contact, was incredible. One of the reasons I chose this company from the four I had estimates from was that Shane was so responsive in his e-mails. He provided detailed, timely responses to all my questions and also provided some very good ideas in terms of plants. Having moved here from the East, I did not know a whole lot about plants, shrubs, and trees that would thrive in Arizona. Among my four estimates, they were not the cheapest. They were tied for the middle; but I chose them because I had a coupon from Angie?s List that discounted the prices for trees and shrubs, and I received a senior citizen discount as well. I also knew that we would work well together because Shane was very detail- oriented not only in the estimate but in his emails from start to finish...and that is how I operate. Masterscapes is able to charge less for gravel installation because it doesn't buy the gravel from one of the rock supply places in the area. Masterscapes has its own trucks and goes directly to the gravel pits, thus cutting out "the middle man." They did buy the boulders and rip-rap from a rock supply and sent me to pick them out. The only glitches were: 1) They forgot to lay a fabric barrier under the gravel in a couple of areas, so now I'm spraying Bermuda sprouts in those areas; and 2) the plants and trees. I highly recommend that you go to their wholesale nursery source and pick out the plants yourself. Several, if not most, of the 5-gallon plants did not equal what you might see at a retail nursery. So I didn't accept three of the plants and three trees that they brought (I was of course credited for those). Instead, I went to a major retail nursery in the area and picked out something larger and fuller that matched my vision. I bought those separately, which cost another $1300. One of the other plants that Masterscapes brought has already died and at least two are struggling. They do provide a six-month warranty on the plants and will replace them if they don't make it. The key to working well with your contractor is communication.
Description of Work: Masterscapes did a backyard renovation for us that involved bamboo removal and stump grinding, new gravel, rip-rap, boulders, plants, a few tree shrubs, irrigation lines, curbing, pavers, and flagstone. They only set the flagstone, as we already had the product. We also saved about $1100 by renting a sod cutter and shoveling out (3-4 inches down) the Bermuda ourselves. But Masterscapes hauled it all away.
