Downstairs AC unit failed on Saturday and was making horrible noises. Did not want to pay for an emergency visit but called on Saturday and was given a Monday morning appt. HVAC technician, Gabe showed up at 9:30 AM which was well within the 8 - 12 window promised. He was extremely courteous and professional and he explained everything he was doing. He determined that there was a short in a capacitor for the condensor fan. He easily could just have said "It's a 12 year old unit and needs to be replaced" so I was thrilled with a failed part diagnosis. He checked over both AC units for freon and operability and went the extra distance to adjust inside AC registers for optimal cooling in our vaulted ceiling, multi-windowed living room. Very pleased with this company and Gabe. I would highly recommend Howard Air to anyone.
Description of Work: Replaced capacitor for condenser fan. Checked motor bearings to insure they were not cause of ac failure.

Kyle & Mike arrived a bit early and went right to work after going over in detail what they were going to do...never stopping execept for a drink of water or to get tools. They had the old heat pump ready for removal when the crane arrived. They instructed me on how to wire the thermostat and use it, since I had requested to install the thermostat myself. For the installation of the new heat pump, the crane arrived while they were finishing prep work on the roof, but they made sure the prep work was completed to their satisfaction before having the unit lifted to the roof. After the heat pump was installed, they thoroughly explained what they were doing to finish the job, advised me on what was done so I could tell the roofers what had been done, and made sure that I had the appropriate contact information in the event of any problems. They went through the checklist of work that had been done as well. All-in-all they completed the job in less time than predicted. Immensely pleased with two things: 1. There was no dilly-dally...these men worked without pause, except to grab water or a tool. 2. They kept me well-informed about what they were doing and why, factually, treating me as a reasonably knowledgeable customer, and gave straight-to-the-point answers to questions.
Description of Work: After wonderful maintenance service this summer, Heat Pump began dying and leaking. Howard Air sent a tech out last Thursday to see if they could stop the leaks until a scheduled installation today. The tech couldn't do anything and didn't charge me for the call. Today, the Heat Pump was replaced by Howard Air.

The heat pump service was everything that I expected. Later had a heat pump failure that they were not able to respond to in an after hours situation. Have a schedule appointment with them the take care of some control system issues. My failed heat pump is to be repaired along with the control system issue.

Description of Work: Great service - prompt ; actually earlier than originally scheduled! My service rep today was Myke - he was very friendly, courteous, and willing to take time to explain what he was doing and why. My A/C fan had apparently gone out, due to the starting capacitor failing (I have a dual run cap), so he left the original cap installed for the compressor, and then added a smaller one dedicated to the fan. He also checked my freon and then was able to answer my questions about what to set the temperature at on a daily basis, for optimal usage, etc... They gave me the 10% discount for finding them through Angie's list which was great. The only thing I wished for would've been a slightly lower price on the capacitor, but that has nothing to do with Myke.

I called Howard Air on 9/1 and they were able to make an appointment for the next afternoon, between 3-5PM. Wayne the technician called as promised within 1/2 hour of arrival. He was very courteous, professional, and extremely helpful! He diagnosed our problem quickly, listened to our financial concerns, and provided answers. He was terrific; I will definitely ask for him when we call again next spring for a maintenance check.

Patrick came out to perform cooling service on both units. He was awesome. Never had anyone keep me informed as he did. He let me know everything he was doing or going to do. I had an issue with one unit and he provided a quote. I have a existing Home Warranty, but wish I could get Howard Air and Patrick replace the part. I will be using them from now on.

Description of Work: Our A/C unit is 16 years old and has done very well......we have had different hvac specialist here doing the usual testing and inspecting making sure our unit will survive another summer....unfortunately every service that has been here used the normal scare tactic of our unit going bust etc.....always trying to sale us on a new unit and of course a new Trane is always in the 12k range......right now we just cannot do that ! Needless to say we have had horrible experiences here in the Valley when it comes to contractors......who can you trust ???? So we went to Angies List & Howard Air appeared to rate the best......after speaking with Cheryl in their scheduling customer service dept she was very reassuring........My husband & I are very happy with Howard Air.......their tech named David was very honest and explained everything he was doing. The part we needed was reasonably priced and should give us another 4 yrs hopefully !!!! The air is blowing and cold air is cooling our home and we are so happy that not only was Howard professional but they did not try to scam us or take advantage of us. The motor unit that we needed was correctly priced. We have had other companies here and their prices were in the same category. The problem with the other companies were they had the part we needed and the price was right but the presentation was horrible !! It was the "scare tactic" of we will put this part in but the chances of it lasting is 50/50......you really need a new unit why waste your money. Not with Howard Air......their technician came in and properly diagnosed & shared the cost of our part and installed. No scare tactics just the facts. I highly recommend Howard Air.....especially if you are on a budget/fixed income. You will not be scammed and their team is very professional and Cheryl is a sweetheart. Our tech David was a fine gentleman and is welcomed back in our home anytime !!!! Finally a contractor in the valley we can trust !! The staff at Howard Air are remarkable people. From my very first call, they have gone above and beyond to accommodate me and answer any questions I had. Rocky, was my first point of contact and he spent a great deal of time on the phone with me doing a Q & A. At the conclusion (after hearing my horror story), he said this was going to be referred to Troy who was their engineer. Troy called me back and set up an appointment to come to the house and assess the HVAC and problems we have been having. Troy spent a great deal of time checking all areas related to the air conditioners functionality. He was as professional on site as he was over the phone. The report he filled out for me was complete and confirmed the wrong size AC units were installed. In fact, based on the square footage of my home, there should have only been one five-ton unit connected. The builder?s contractor placed 2 units ---a two-ton and five ton. I am scheduled to meet with the builder this week and will be requesting (due to an extremely bad experience with their contractor) that Howard Air make the all-necessary changes to correct this problem. That way, I know a professional job will be done? I had Howard Air do the regular maintenance on my units and they were the most reasonably priced for this service. Extremely good service, work ethics and courtesy from all employees; THAT IS HOWARD AIR!
Description of Work: A premise visit was made to establish and recommend how to resolve the issues of ineffective air conditioners. Which by the way is less then 2yrs old? Troy was the consummate professional. His range of knowledge in this area is indisputable. He checked the ducts, equipment, measured the square footage of the house, and verified the size of AC units that should have been put in when the house was built. After returning to the office, Troy sent me a complete Load Report with recommendations, which I have given to the builder. He has also spoken with the builder, on my behalf, to explain his findings and the proper steps necessary to correct the problem.

I found the company on this months Angie's List computer site so had a discount coupon. I emailed the site to ask for an estimate and filled out the information for an appointment request. I don't recall any kind of response by email or phone, but I was here in Phoenix on the day and time I had indicated I would be. I am hearing impaired, but have equipment for the phone. My pc program could have rejected an email response or perhaps I could not identify the sender and deleted it.. The tech apparently arrive at the time I said I would be available according to seurity information. I had not notified the security gate that the technician was coming, he was not on the list to allow entry, so they apparently tried to call the unit several times. I am hearing impaired, I was sleeping and did not answer the phone. I'm glad the service technician wasn't turned away as I wanted to get this done while I was here. He called and finally awakened me and I asked him to come up. I told him I did not know we had an appointment or recall getting a price/ appt response from the company. The technician was very good, quick and responsive. He provided the service I requested and I was happy to get another thing checked off my "to do" list. I paid the $89 gladly, but don't know if I got my discount or not as I have no idea of service charges in this area. I suspect not.... I'm just glad he was not turned away and was persistent in contacting me. I know that took him extra time and he was very pleasant. I have been deaf for a few years now and try to take these little surprises as they come.

Our A/C was out and I called Howard Air at 10:30pm. Their answering service was very friendly and they asked for my telephone number. They told me that we would receive a telephone to schedule emergency service over night. I called an hour later to make sure they had the correct telephone number. They did and once again assured me we would receive a call very shortly.We waited for their call all night and by morning all local air conditioning contractors were already too busy to respond quickly. Howard Air still has not returned our call as of 9:30am the morning after our emergency service request.

I get home a little before 4 pm on Friday. My AC is running and no cold air is blowing. I called Howard Air. I have used them twice before, was happy with their service. My unit is over 20 years old. A nice lady tells me that someone will be by this afternoon. She calls back in about a half hour letting me know a tech is on his way. Jake arrives soon afterward. As I explained above he explained why and what he had to replace. My AC was running properly by 5:30 pm. The price was fair. In summary. They were professional, polite, prompt and reasonable priced. I could not have asked for anything more. Jake rocks!
Description of Work: My air conditioner was running but no cold air was coming out. A few parts needed to be replaced and coolant added. I was shown every part before its removal and received an explanation of why it had to be replaced.

The quality of service isn't established when things go well. It's established by how a company responds when things do not go well. Right now, things are not going well and Howard Air is not stepping up to come up with a solution. Update: Howard Air did find a compressor to install after just 3 days in a hot house (instead of a week). However, it was only after I expressed my complete frustration and told them I was looking at other options (other contractors) that they found this compressor. While I appreciate that they fixed the problem, it should not have been this painful.
Description of Work: I purchased a Trane rooftop package unit from Howard Air in August 2007. I was convinced by Howard Air to purchase an expensive Trane unit because of the quality of the product and the warranty. It is now less than 4 years later and the compressor has failed. Since Trane does not stock compressors locally, I have been told it will be about a week before the compressor gets to Phoenix. That's a week without air conditioning in the middle of the Phoenix summer! In the past when compressors have failed, they've been fixed within a couple of days. Because of the great Trane product and warranty, I have to wait a week. That speaks volumes to the quality of the Trane product and the quality of the Trane warranty. Howard Air's response: "It's not my product". No - it's not your product, but you sold it to me, and I would think you'd want to stand behind it and not make me wait over a week in a hot house to get it fixed!

I had another company do the annual check up on my 2 units and they recommended over $800 worth of work. When the price increased another couple of hundred dollars when I called to actually schedule the work, I decided to get another opinion. I contacted Howard after seeing them on Angies List to look at the units and give me their opinion. I specifically did not provide them with the estimate/work proposed by the other company. Howard said both units were in good shape and recommended a simple and cheap freon adjustment. After receiving their assessment, I shared the other company's proposal and pretty much gave them the opportunity to do much of that work. They declined -said I really didn't need it and they would earn my business honestly. Everyone was very professional and I was able to get an appointment within 24 hours. I really appreciated their honesty. I'll be using this company for all my H&C needs going forward.

The total cost was $650 but $150 was for the holiday emergency visit. I don't think that was an unreasonable price especially since they were at our house within hours of our call on a huge holiday weekend. I would definitely hire Howard Air again and recommend them to others as well.
Description of Work: We had been out of town for a week and got home on 7/3 to find our A/C had died. I didn't think we'd find anyone who would come out to fix it on July 4th. We called Howard Air on the morning of the 4th and they were there that afternoon I was out all day but my husband was home when Julio arrived to fix the A/C and he said he was very professional and very nice. Julio found that the fan motor had broken and fixed it ASAP. Julio also advised that one of the parts on our A/C unit was getting old and he told my husband what issues to look out for that would indicate it was time to replace the part.

My air conditioning went on the fritz the Friday afternoon before the July 4th weekend. Fortunately it didn't quit, but it wasn't cooling properly -- the temperature in the house was in the mid-80s and the unit was running constantly. After consulting Angie's List, I called Howard Air the first thing Tuesday morning and was given a time frame for the service call the following day. They called to let me know Jake was on the way, and he was terrific -- polite, friendly and was able to diagnose and fix the problem in about an hour. There was a clogged pipe that had backed up water being discharged from the heat pump. He unclogged it and drained the water. When he left it was blowing 48 degree air. I will definitely use Howard Air for annual a/c maintenance going forward.
Description of Work: Unclogged the discharge pipe on my roof-top heat pump/air conditioner and emptied water backed up in the unit.

Gabe arrived as quickly as possible, and Ray called as soon as Gabe was on his way. Gabe thoroughly inspected the unit, explained the problem, and advised me on what he expected would be needed after the iced over coil thawed. He also discussed possbilities he considered remote but possible. He advised that Ray would call for an appointment for the next day. Ray did call soon after Gabe left, and since my pets and I had gone almost two days without A/C, he arranged for Gabe to arrive early the next morning. Gabe was prompt and ready to work when he arrived. Cleaning the unit took about 90 minutes, and I could hear him taking the panels off to get to the inner workings of the A/C. This was what I expected as far as maintenance service; my previous contractor, who retired 4 years ago after serving me well for 11 years, did exactly the same thing twice a year, and I never had problems until the unit clearly became too old and needed to be replaced. I had used two previous contractors over the past four years, and Gabe reported the inner coil looked like it had not been cleaned for about four years, which caused it to ice up. It is my belief that the imcomplete cleaning by the contractors I used during the past four years caused the problem. Since I tend to be loyal to good contractors, I decided to purchase a contract and was pleasantly surprised at how reasonably priced it was compared to the previous contract I had. Overall, I am totally impressed and happy with the service I received. Ray and Gabe treated me honestly, fairly, and well and truly acted like they wanted my business. I received good value for the money and the level of maintenance I expect and more. My A/C is due to be replaced next year, and I plan on using them for that. My previous contractor load balanced my house, and Ray indicated they would accept those numbers and be ready to install a new unit as soon as I am. I appreciate that courtesy, since my time is precious and using those numbers saves me time spent with another person performing the same work my previous contractor had performed.
Description of Work: A/C stopped functioning, and Howard Air was quick and responsive in assessing the problem late in the afternoon of 7/5. An inner coil was iced over and needed to thaw overnight. Promply at 7:00 AM on 7/6, the tech, Gabe, appeared to perform the work. He cleaned the unit thoroughly, a process that took about 90 minutes.

The technician was on time, very polite and professional. Took the time to explain everything he was going to do and perform. I asked if I could accompany him during his inspection and service call. Technician was happy to have me accompany him during the entire service call and even encouraged it so he could explain what he was doing. He took the time to explain everything about my units and answered all my questions. He was not rushed and if I did not understand he was more than happy to explain it again. Very clean and courteous and made sure he took extra care when moving through the house caring his ladder not to hit any walls. Lastly, no hard sales. When he found something wrong or had an indication that something may need future repair, he explained all the options and prices associated with repair, no hidden fees, price included labor and parts. Very well done! Definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Annual Service on air condition units. Inspection of 2 units, flush condensation lines, checked and cleaned fans and motors. The cost include a second service call for all my heater units later this year. Was not required, but the technician did such a great job I did not hesitate to have him come back. Also received a reduced rate by preordering, but again not a requirement nor did he push it.

It's the hottest time of the year right now in AZ so I'm sure they are extremely busy. My appointment was b/w 12-4 and when I didn't hear anything by 4 p.m. I called to check in. Sure enough, they were backed up but still had me in the queue to be seen. The tech arrived around 5:30 p.m. and was very apologetic and got right to work. They explained everything and were very forthcoming with the possible cost and what they were going to do. I would certainly recommend Howard Air to anyone. It was a very positive experience. Thanks!

Arrived on time, explained what needs to be checked, asked me about any concerns, went to work and took extra time to flush out the two systems including coils and drain lines. The semi-annual check from other AC companies used to last 30 minutes. Howard Air spent 2 hours going over my 2 heat pumps and the tech, Patrick who is the absolute best, added refrigerant to one unit but did not charge me for it. Way Cool. I asked Patrick about technical questions on copper vs aluminum coils and the type refrigerant used, the life of capicitors and he explained very honestly how these things work. What a find.
Description of Work: Semi-annual maint on 2 rooftop heat pumps consisting of check on all components. I have a maint agreement priced very fair that covers 2 visits for the 2 units each year. Today, Patrck from Howard Air was here for 2 hours checking refrigerant, voltage, capacitors, contactors, outdoor coil, evap coil, drain lines and p traps. Patrick is a hero in my eyes. He understands customers, is honest, thorough and knowledgeable about this business. Call Howard Air and ask them to send Patrick, you will be pleased. Technician was running late, but we received phone calls advising us of this. Work was performed quickly and professionally when he arrived. Part needed to be ordered and was then replaced on a separate visit.

The guy that did it. Jake was courteous and helpful. Whatever you needed he would help with. He repaired the heater and air conditioner it is working fine.

I've used them for miscellaneous things with my air conditioner and they were so good that when I saw them on Angie's List, I thought this was where I wanted to go to get a new system. They have been fabulous. They were fine and conscientious for the checkups and I have been really, really impressed with their level of service. They did several things. They worked with our roofing company and put in some preliminary work so that when the new-sprayed roof went on they wouldn’t do any more damage. They worked with the roofing company to make sure it was done in the most efficient way possible and the least damaging way to our new roof. In fact they didn’t do any damage to the roof. They have continued to check up to make sure that things are going well and the efficiency is good. I sent an email to them today on a different matter and got a call back in about ten minutes. I was concerned about my sister’s thermostat because she also got a similar unit. They were absolutely responsive. I can’t say enough about not only their workmanship but also their attention to detail and their eagerness to make sure that the customer is pleased. I will absolutely continue to use them.
Description of Work: I used Howard Air for a whole new air conditioning system because of all the hail and damage to my previous unit.
