Response from MK Remodeling & Design
We are sorry to hear you had a bad experience with our service. Since your project required plans and permitting, it took longer than normal for us to begin. We did complete the project within 4 weeks once work began despite door ordering and railing lead times and the project was completed per plan. The metal issue was not brought to our attention when we last visited and we weren't aware of or contacted about it until you submitted your review. The metal you are referring to may be the required post seat for the deck. We'd be happy to take a look at the rebar. Send us a photo at your earliest convenience so we can determine what needs to be done.

Mike Gillis of MK Remodeling was responsive to our call and came out the next day to survey what we wanted done in order to give us an estimate. He personally worked with us through several estimates / changes and also brought out his in-house designer for final estimates. Our overall requirement was it all had to look like it had always been there. Everything had to match, moldings, paint, trim, drywall finish, doors, hardware, etc. We also wanted the work schedule so there was a crew working each day as best could be scheduled. His workers were prompt, cleaned up after themselves daily and minimized dust in the house. They were very nice to have in the house. The whole project was finished in 3-4 weeks. He and his crews both responded promptly on any concerns we had and fixed anything that needed to be fixed. We also had some in-process changes to the work. Mike also worked with us if there were any misunderstandings in communications. He showed up at the house frequently to check on the work being done by his crews. Overall, we were pleased with the work, with Mike, his designer and his crew. It all looks great; a real value added to the home! Thanks Mike.
Description of Work: Coverted open study to 4th bedroom with closet. Converted open dining room to private study with french doors and and custom niches and lighted in study and outside wall in foyer. Added custom coat closet off kitchen hallway to laundry room off backside of new private study.

Mike and his crew were great to work with. It took a while to get started with the planning and permitting, but once it did, the work moved right along. We needed another bedroom and decided to add one along a second story hallway that was open to our two story living room. He was great at helping us figure out how to design the room. When the work got started, his crew was a pleasure to work with. They were very respectful to me and my young children. As with all remodeling projects, there were some bumps along the way and unexpected items that came up. I was very pleased with how Mike and the crew handled them. When we decided to move an entire wall , closet and window, they made it happen without a problem. They were easy to work with, easy to communicate with, and they did a beautiful job. We've had many people who know us well and know our home walk in and not even notice that there is now a room above our living room. It looks like it belongs and the transition between the old and new is seamless. I will definitely use them again on any projects and I would recommend them to anyone.
Description of Work: Added a bedroom over our open 2-story living room.

My association requires that all structural work be done by a licensed contractor, so I got on Angie's List and found MK Remodeling & Design. Mike answered the phone and set up an appointment, to which he was early. When I called to confirm the appointment time, he returned my call in less than a half hour, which is great. Mike was honest in assessing the situation, even though it cost him the job. He let me know that the work needed was not structural in nature, which showed me integrity on his part. He was very friendly and polite. If I need a licensed contractor in the future, Mike is the one I will call.
Description of Work: Mike came out on time and answered phone calls or returned them promptly. I had a job that needed a licensed contractor, or so II thought, but Mike was honest in his assessment, even though it meant the handyman was going to perform the work instead of MK Remodeling & Design. I will be keeping his card in case I do need a licensed contractor in the future.

Once we decided we wanted to go through with our renovation, we contacted three different contractors that we found on Angie's List. Right off the bat we could tell MK was the way to go; the owner, Mike, answered the call himself. He was available to come out for the intro and rough estimate within a few days. The other to companies were larger, and they had to fit us into their schedule. The people I met with weren't even the ones we'd be working with if we chose them. After we chose MK Remodeling to do our work, Mike and a draftsman came out to take measurements and develop formal plans for permits. Overall it took maybe 2 months to finalize the plans and obtain permits. This is partially due to the fact that my husband and I are both engineers and were finicky about the plans (it turns out in the construction industry it's much easier to make changes on the fly than in aerospace). Once the work got started, the addition went up pretty quickly. The team was a pleasure to work with, and they were very receptive to changes we requested and quickly corrected any (minor) mistakes we found. The project did take 1-2 months longer than initially estimated, but much of that was due to scope change on our part, weather issues and issues with subcontractors out of our control (such as extended holiday shut-downs that delayed getting our new front doors). Kristina, Mike's daughter / interior designer / co-project manager provided excellent insight and suggestions and helped us visualize the finished kitchen and walk in shower by using a rendering software. The end result was better than what we imagined! Especially our shower - the old tub was about 2 feet down into the ground, and an ugly white tile. This was filled in and a new half-wall with rain-glass was added to make a walk-in. We absolutely love it. The cost of the project was right on. He gave us a very detailed estimate up front, and the final invoice included the original estimate, itemized additions based on scope increase, and itemized subtractions based on scope removal. It was easy to track what work had been done and if you had questions or issues with the billing, he was always willing to go through it with you and make any corrections that were required. The quality of work was outstanding, especially the tile in the new addition and walk in shower. Jose, MK's lead guy, is a true craftsman. The subcontractors brought in for electrical work, painting, roofing, A/C installation, cabinet painting, etc. did an excellent job, and were almost always quick to come fix issues that popped up. Another huge perk is that Mike, Kristina and Jose all love dogs, and actually seemed to like our 2 our poorly behaved, crate-eating, fence-jumping dogs. Mike, Kristina, Jose and the rest of the team were an absolute pleasure to work with, and the experience overall was great. Considering the fact that I was pregnant during the whole 6 months of this project, that says a lot!!!
Description of Work: - Approximately 480 sq. ft. addition added to front of house (bedroom, dining room, and move front door), requiring the addition of a second A/C unit - Replaced all windows and doors in house - Replaced foam roof on entire house - Replaced counters and faucets in kitchen, laundry room and 2 bathrooms - Painted cabinets in kitchen, laundry room and 2 bathrooms - Filled in sunken bath tub and replaced with a walk-in shower - Painted entire exterior of house - Added lighting in family room and living room

Mike the owner is very prompt. The workers are very nice and clean. There were a few glitches but they immediately came out and fixed them.
Description of Work: We used MK Remodeling & Design.
We met with Mike in early October to go over the details of the work we wanted him to complete. We wanted a soffit removed, a wall squared off, pot lighting installed, popcorn ceiling removed, stone front and mantle installed, interior paint of the room, and a bookcase installed. We also had him install some electrical outlets and install a stone backsplash in the kitchen. The drywall guys did a great job except when it came to cleaning up their mess. They dumped stuff in our front yard repeatedly and left residue on the walls that Mike said would just wash up...why he expected us to clean up after his workers I don't know? They also scratched our wood floors with their ladder. The fireplace stone looked great as did the mantle. Again the clean up was not great. They left grout on the walls near the stone and Mike said "we" could touch it up with paint after having paid him to paint the room. Many of the stones on the fireplace are loose:( The new light switches installed did not match the existing and now we have two different sized switches on two plates. We had to ask him to put a black outlet in the bookshelf after installing white ones that really stood out. The bookshelf was installed and molding was taken down near it and never replaced. Saw dust wasn't cleaned up inside the unit. The backsplash stone looks great and we love it! Overall we just felt as though there was a lack of attention to detail even in their billing. We were told we owed about $3,000 more than we actually did. We are still waiting for someone to come and fix the stones on the fireplace and the scratches on our wood floors.

SO many thanks to Mike,I had lots of ideas about home improvements I wanted done! Mike truthfully told me if he thought the money expenditure was worthwhile..we discussedwhen/if to do any of the work depending on my goal...to live in the house, sell it, rent, etc.He was very, very, very honest in telling me my options and really concentrated on my wellbeing by informing me about how anything done would affect not only my enjoyment but the valueof my home.Although it meant the loss of a potential job for Mike, he clearly cared more about considerationand respect for the customer. He invested a lot of his valuable time, even after knowing that I wouldnot be having the work done. At no time did he try to pressure or convince me to do anything..if fact,he helped me decide that (given the value, age, condition, and resale value in this market) that anyimprovements would not be cost effective for me.I have rarely encountered a contractor (or any service provider) to be as honest, professional, knoweldgableand truely considerate as Mike. Although I ended up not having any work done, I would always call him first in the future and would encourage any others to do so,Thanks again Mike!
Description of Work: I contacted MK for an estimite on remodeling jobs I wanted done.Communication was excellent...quick return of e-mails and calls, flexible about appointment time.Arrived right on time, very generous with time alloted to discuss options.

I submitted a very favorable report during the construction process and now that the project has been complete (for a few months) I just want to add that we would definitely hire Mike for future projects. He was highly professional, friendly, on time for the most part but if something was delayed to a supplier he stayed in communication day by day so we would know what to expect. We added and subtracted from the original estimate as we went along and were able to make changes based on additional or subtracted costs with no surprises in the end. We wanted to be involved in all decisions and Mike always made sure that we knew our options.
Description of Work: We added on a closet which involved all aspects of the construction remodeling process including some interior and total exterior painting, electrical work inside and out, new windows, new doors for interior and exterior, a skylight, pavers for patio and atrium, drywall, and brick work. The only thing we did not include was roofing because we already had a roofing contract with another company.

When we were looking to remodel we gathered quotes from numerous contractors. MK Remodeling and Design was selected for their professionalism and detailed quote. The results were exactly what we had been hoping for and the work was high in quality. Mike and his crew had some issues with delivery of the flooring and double doors--none of it their fault--but they were fantastic at communicating all phases of the project and keeping us up to date on delivery and installation status. Nice people, work scheduled quickly, crew was good at cleaning up after themselves, the detailed quote made it clear all pricing, and the end results were exactly what we had requested.
Description of Work: We had our attached one car garage remodeled into an exercise room, which required removal of one doorway and the installation of a double door at a new location, removal of garage door opener system and sealing of existing garage door, the addition of walls, numerous electric outlets, gym quality flooring, lighting... We also had a new wall installed in our second home to turn an open sitting room into an enclosed home office with double doors.

Description of Work: Mike (owner) was responsive from the beginning estimates as well through the process. He always responds immediately to any emails that I send with questions, We are in the process of our remodel and we see him every day. His workers are prompt, friendly, and polite. His estimate was very specifically itemized so that I can add, delete, or change out ideas from my original plans as we go. The work was completed within the estimated time frame. He and his workers were always professional and hard working. The work was well-done, especially the ceramic tile. They cleaned up and kept the dust in one area. His subcontractors for installation of the granite and the glass for the shower were also professional, friendly and well-qualified. The communication was great; Mike always responded to inquiries and any concerns right away. Mike's daughter helped with the design and buying the accessories, including helping us choose the granite. We are very please with the results. The bathroom looks terrific.--just what we wanted.
Description of Work: Mike Gillis worked with us to remodel the master bathroom. Work completed included lowering the ceiling; replacing glass pane windows with glass block; putting ceramic tile on the floor; redoing the shower, including putting up a half wall, ceramic tile in a pattern, and building a bench in the shower; replacing all fixtures and cabinets; adding recessed lights in the ceiling, mirror doors on the closets, replacing mirrors and medicine cabinets; and also adding a door between the bathroom and the bedroom. The work was completed within his estimated time frame. He and his workers were always professional and hard working.

I'm an out of state property owner who was trying to manage a flood repair/remodel job for a tenant which was partially covered by my homeowner's insurance. Other reports on this site for MK Remodeling are dead-on when they say Mike is very responsive via phone/email/whatever, which was essential for me. He quoted me a price I thought reasonable given the high score the List has given him and made several clarifications and enhancements to the original estimate; seemed to be willing to chase the work if needed. The job was completed as quickly as my tenant's schedule would allow and was of high quality, although there were some issues exposed or caused by the work (some old hardware damaged, added flooring under the stove no longer making it sit flush with the stove, and dirt from the job gumming up the sliding door). Mike was responsive and professional throughout my contact with him regarding these issues, and offered some help if the tenant wasn't happy with the state of the remodel. My tenant claims to have had some small disagreements with the workers, but I can't corroborate those reports and will only say the company seems to have done the job pretty well considering the logistical challenges and the fact that the house still has a lot of old, quirky parts. Overall things didn't go as smoothly due as I'd hoped due to some back and forth, but I think MK Remodeling's solid reputation is justified by their willingness to stay in touch with their customers and make things right even after the job is done.

Mike did an outstanding job on both remodeling projects and I could not have been more pleased. From conceptualizing and making suggestions to the finish details, Mike is professional, reliable, meticulous and very, very patient. I am not a great decision maker on the details and Mike helped me out tremendously with that. And the work was finished on time and beautifully. Can't ask for more than that!

The price was higher than I thought. I tried to negotiate with them and I requested that they eliminate features until they were within my budget, but they werenāt able to come down enough. We talked about doing in in two phases: the first phase would be installing the fireplace and the second phase would be the stone facing on the fireplace and built-ins that I would like next to the fireplace. They were very prompt so I assume they are appreciative of the buyerās time as well as their own.

We are thrilled with the job that Mike did and highly recommend MK Remodeling. They were not the lowest bid that we got, but they are a great value for the money. We felt comfortable leaving Mike & his crew in our home while we weren't there. Mike paid attention to detail as if the project was one he was doing in his own home. MK Remodeling & Design is a professional company that does quality work.
Description of Work: Master bath remodel; tile in secondary bathroom; pendant lights over counter.
From the very beginning I was impressed with Mike Gillis and everyone I worked with. I had (3) companies come out to give me quotes on enclosing my patio. The first company gave me a ball park figure and said they would need money to do plans before they could give me a set estimate. The second company sent me a fax with a short hand written summary of what they would do and a quote, also hand written, beside it. With in days I had an email from Mike at MK Remodeling with a (2) page detailed and itemized list of what they would do. Along with that came a small floor plan and a computer generated rendering of what the room would like look when complete. The number was very good and the presentation gave me confidence in what they could accomplish. Mike was very involved in every aspect of our remodel. He was there every morning and kept me well informed on schedules. My goal was to enclose our patio and have it flow with the rest of the house so it would not look like an add-on. Mike accomplished this well by raising the floor the match the existing house and creating archways into the room to match archways throughout the house. The drywall was textured and painted to match my other walls perfectly and some extra work had to go into matching my baseboards, as they no longer make the corner pieces to match the ones I had. Some how Mike managed to rework some that were close, so they ended up matching perfectly as well. After completing the remodel, they went on to replace the flooring in my entire house. This included taking up the existing carpet and tile and installing wood floors through out the house, with tile work in the bathrooms and laundry room. Mike's worker Jose did an amazing job and he was a total perfectionist in every way, which is what you hope for in wood floor installation. We have a very busy schedule, so it was nice to have a trust in the entire crew enough that we could give them a key to our home (something I never do) so they could come and go as needed. They were fun to work with and at the same time focused on getting the job done. Mike and the guys even took very good care of our dog, making sure she couldn't get out the gate, which was a worry for me since I'm not home during the day. After having them there daily for a couple of months, we (including the dog) were a little sad to see them go when our project was complete, but I have to admit, it was nice to be back to normal too. I have no reservations about recommending MK Remodeling to friends and family. In fact, they are currently doing painting and wood flooring at my parents home now.

Mike did it all from beginning to end - did it at a very reasonable price - and his work is absolutely top quality. I admit that I am a little picky, and Mike did everything to my quality standards (which is saying a lot!). I would highly recommend his work. In fact, when I had him work on my laundry room, I did not even get another estimate. I just called him and did it. And when I have another job I will do the same - just contact Mike. It's what you do when you finally find a really good contractor that you trust!
Description of Work: Mike actually did two different jobs for me (which I'm sure he often does since he does such a great job on the first one, he gets called back. The first was a remodel on my kitchen and installing a tile floor in my office. In the kitchen, he did a mini remodel because I was trying to save and not go overboard and invest too much money in light of the economy. Mike worked with me on that and never seemed annoyed by my cost limiting choices. He installed new floor tile, new backsplash tile (designed by his daughter a student working on her design degree), took the stove out of my island and tiled it, put a gas line into an outside wall and installed a new gas stove (previously electric), retrofitted some new cabinets to beautifully match my old ones and a number of other things that I can't recall at the moment. I was so happy with the job he did that I called him back a few months later to have him do my laundry room. Remove a wall, install new cabinets and countertops, and he even did finish painting on both jobs so I didn't have to get a separate painter.

This was a great experience! Mike and his staff were punctual and professional. Even from the beginning, Mike was very easy to work with. I have a crazy work schedule and he was more than accommodating with scheduling and rescheduling. He also came by everyday to check on the progress and quality- not that Jose needed any supervision! MK took the time to make sure the job was done right, which is refreshing. My shower turned out beautifully and I feel like I've found a company that not only does wonderful work, but is also very reasonably priced!
Description of Work: I had my shower stall tiled, including recessed shelves and a foot pedestal.
