BEWARE! BEWARE! BEWARE! It hurts me to write this review because I had actually recommended this company to others and a couple of people trusted me and wanted estimates from them. The sole purpose is to make sure that no one else is deceived by them and ripped off, as I was. I thought I was being careful and I called the BBB in AL to check their rating. I called and it was an A-, mostly due to the fact that the BBB didn't have that much info on them. However, I didn't think to check in other states. After my ordeal, I researched, and found the same company with Jim Christensen as President in OH and the BBB had an F rating for them. Also, seemingly good, I had also seen the company's address on the internet and it was in Gardendale, AL. Again, after this ordeal, I further researched and there were 3 addresses in Gardendale for Affiliated Contracting Consultants. I rode out there and checked the addresses. One was an empty house, one was where Mike Moore and his family lived and where Dane was also living. The 3rd address was a Care and Rehab Center for the elderly. The internet will show the address is Dean Lane, but I went and talked to the Rehab Center and confirmed with 3 people that the address is 420 Dean Dr. As far as the work, I was told that it was a father, son and father-in-law business so I expected 3 people to be working on the deck. I also saw a Gardendale number listed in an advertisment as Jim's contact number so I assumed that he traveled from OH to AL, depending on where the work was. There were red flags at first because I thought Jim, who had been in business for over 30 years would be the one with all the expertise and I was expecting him to be on the job. When only Dane and Mike showed up, they were so likeable and just as the advertisement said, I was assured that Mike was a Master Builder, (no longer convinced. would like to see credentials) ,and knew what he was doing so I felt everything would be OK. Everytime I had a question about something, the answer always sounded so good, and I trusted them and would just agree. We immediately hit it off. Dane even called me Auntie at times and they kept telling me how it seemed like we had known each other for years and that they felt like I was family, and I sincerely felt the same way. At first, I bought them at least 4 cartons of their favorite sodas, diet Pepsi and Grapico. Then when I found out that they loved sweet tea, I made them a gallon of tea every day or 2. I had a never ending supply of snacks for them throughout their time at my house. Though, they were welcome to come in and out of my house to get tea or other snacks, I also got an ice chest and filled it with ice and drinks and put it on the porch so it would be readily available for them. I took them out to eat one time. I cooked for them one time. I sent food home to their families. When they mentioned that they had to go and rent a pressure washer to do work at their own home, I volunteered to call my husband and see if they could borrow his shop's pressure washer. He agreed so we loaned them our pressure washer which they kept for 5 days since they didn't come to work Monday or Tuesday. I could go on and on, but the point is that as nice as I was to them and as much as I trusted them, Affiliated Contracting Consultants, Inc. would have been the last company that I would have ever thought would have scammed me. So, please, beware and don't think that it can't happen to you. Please learn from the hardship that they have put on me. Very long story short, after Dane Christensen and Mike Moore continually spoke of their two year guarantee on all their work and gained my total trust, and based on their own words, convinced me that they wanted our families to get together and remain friends, long after their work was completed, I was absolutely devasated when the totally unexpected, happened. Within a week of the screened-in deck being completed 4 or 5 screened frames blew out. Before they were paid, Dane always answered the phone or immediately returned my calls. However, after they were paid in full, he quit returning my phone calls, and his dad, Jim/James Christensen, who was in OH, got involved, for the first time, and he was the only one that I was allowed to personally, correspond with. Before he intervened, I spoke to Mike Moore, and texted and left voice messages for Dane for probably a couple of weeks. Dane finally agreed and put the screens back in and take care of some, (not all), of issues that the building inspector mentioned. At this time, we spoke of a concern I had since the moment after I wrote the final check. I was grossly overcharged and I thought it was an honest miscalculation on their part, that they would make right after they realized it. I totally trusted them and knew they were going to do all the other repairs on my home so the overpayment could easily be taken care of through labor cost on the other projects. I told him that if he looked at the original invoice vs. his revised invoice, he would readily see what I was talking about. Basically, I paid well over $2,000 more than the original invoice stated, for labor only, for them to replace 13 floor joises. I bought all the materials, myself. (pd. over $11,500 in all) Dane told me he didn't have to look at the invoice and that they had plenty of work to do at my house and he would make it right. It looked as though he was going to do this. He even ordered the materials, himself to fix my front porch and said that he was going to pay for these materials, when they came in. Then, we went out of town for a family reunion on August 2 and when we returned home 3 days, later, we never saw or heard from him, again. He never paid for or picked up the materials for the front porch. He conveniently is in Chicago doing work, after I was promised that they weren't going anywhere and because they lived only 14 miles away, they could readily, be at my house to take care of any concerns. To date, there is at least 1 leak in the roof; they still have not put the gutters on the deck which was suppose to be included in the cost; 12 more screens (out of 22) have been blown out and there are many other issues with the deck and many broken promises, not to mention the 2 year guarantee. I was told by Jim Christensen that Dane was out of pocket and he was calling on his behalf so I was never allowed to talk to Dane. I have spent over 4 months, going over and beyond, to be patient and to try to believe that Jim, was a person of integrity and that he would do what was right. My last email was from Jim Christensen on 8-10-12 in which he said that he would contact me within 7 days with a resolution for the screens. I have not heard from anyone, since. He seemed to have been just trying to buy time, leading me on like he was going to do something, and hoping I would disappear. I still have tornado damage to be repaired and I have had to put that on hold to deal with this. There were so many compassionate people who came around after the tornado. It is sad to see that others have no remorse when they take advantage of someone else's misfortune. For people who have gotten ripped off, know that you should file a complaint with the BBB, in various states, if applicable; file a complaint with the Attorney General's Office and Chamber of Commerce; give negative reviews everywhere you can, not to be vengeful, but to alert others in order to save them the grief that the victim goes through; call your local television stations and utilize their resources. In Alabama, that would be 6 on your side. Get an attorney, if you can and don't just go away. That is what they are hoping you will do and that is how we allow them to continue to rip off innocent people. . There are other things I could go into, but my goal is not to hurt or destroy, anyone; I just want the company to take responsibility and do the right thing. I would love to be able to come back and say that things have been taken care of and all is forgiven. I regret having to even write this review. I really considered these people my friends and it brings me no satisfaction in having to do this, except that I may prevent someone else from getting ripped off. Remember company names, come and go and emerge as other names, so it's the names associated with this company that you need to remember; Jim/James L. Christensen from West Chester,OH; Dane Christensen and Mike Moore, Glen Chapel in G'dale. To the best of my knowledge, Jim is mentioned in AL, FL, GA, OH, KY and other states, which I would not have used them if I had known that. It was very important to me to get a company that I absolutely knew was located in AL and licensed in AL because I wanted to make sure the company was local and reputable and was going to be around in case problems, arose. The tornado victims were actually warned about people who went from state to state following the storms and tornados, and taking advantage of the unfortunate victims, literally kicking them again, when they were already down. We were told by our advocates, to make sure that the truck had their advertisement on it and to look on the back of the truck for a state number which would insure you that they were licensed by the state. I let my heart get in the way and I did not even look at their back bumper. I highly recommend that you let no company look at your insurance estimate, in case of a national disaster. A reputable company has their own method of determining costs for a job. If they say that they have to see your insurance estimate in order to know how much they will charge; I promise you, they do not have your best interest in mind. They are most likely trying to make money off of you and your insurance company. Believe me, they use their expertise and our lack of knowledge to lighten the load in your pocketbook, not to help you. Sad world we live in.
Description of Work: We were victims of the tornado of 1-23-12 in AL. I hired Dane Christensen and Mike Moore through a search engine on the internet. I originally thought the company was Affiliated Contractors, but it is Affiliated Contracting Consultants, Inc. based (supposedly) in Gardendale, Alabama. I hired them to, initially, repair/practically rebuild our rear deck and rear screened in deck. Dane told me that the price included 2 gutters and 2 downspouts for the screened-in deck, which they never did do. The gutters on the house were destroyed by the tornado and had previously been removed. Dane told me that he had a friend that would do all of the gutters at the same time, at a very fair price. We were to pay extra for the cost of the gutters on the main structure of the house. Of course, this was never done, either. They were also suppose to repair the front porch. I was buying all materials, but due to being overcharged, he agreed to pay for the materials for the front porch, himself. He ordered the materials under his name, and the materials came in the next week. The supply company called me and told me that they had been trying to reach him to pay and pick up the materials. Neither them nor I have seen him, since. I found out that he was working in Chicago. The decks and porch were the main projects. When they were finished with that work, we had planned on letting them stain the deck, replace our side wooden privacy fence and the back yard chained-link fence. They were also going to make us 4 wooden shutters, which had nothing to do with the tornado; it was just a good time to replace them. They had promised to replace a basement door for me in return for me giving them a Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress that we had only used for about 2 months, due to back problems. This came about when they saw the mattress stored in the basement. They then came to me and they started talking about how the mattress Dane and his girlfriend slept on was one that Dane had when he was young. They said it was all torn up with springs poking them causing them to wake up aching, every morning. I really liked them, as they kept saying, "I was like family to them", and I felt the same way. I really felt sorry that they couldn't even afford a good mattress. So, originally, I was just going to give it to them. Ironically, Dane said that he wasn't that type of person that would just take something for nothing and he wanted to do something in return. He knew that I desperately wanted a new basement door so he told me that whenever I got ready to buy the door that they would replace the door for me and make sure it was aligned, correctly, as some sort of payment for the mattress. I was thrilled about that. I told him that later on when we got all the tornado damage taken care of, we would save up and I would love for them to replace 3 more doors for me. They agreed. However, as soon as they got paid in full for the decks, the people that emphasized how they wanted our families to get together and meet each other and start visiting each other, suddenly have nothing to say or are MIA. I'm usually a good judge of character and I still do not want to think bad of Dane. He is young and I can see how he would not be in the position to have the money or the manpower to make things, right. (Mike is no longer working with him so he has no help) I think he is kind of between a rock and a hard place. So, it wouldn't be fair to him, if I didn't explain how it seemed to play out. Dane's dad, Jim/James L. Christensen, who is the founder of the company is the one that should be in the position and should be responsible to show that the company has integrity. He should be the one to back his son and company and do what is moral and ethical and stand behind his son, and "right" the "wrong" and back up his company's two year guarantee. Instead, when screens (12 out of 22) blew out and when I immediately, told them that I thought they accidentally, miscalculated and overcharged me, Dane's dad, Jim/James L.Christensen, who was in OH and was not with us in AL and knew nothing about what went on, such as written and oral agreements and all our other discussions, intervened and became the only one I was allowed to talk to. Dane had always talked to me about everything and it seemed, as a judge would do, Dane was instructed not to talk to me, anymore. I trusted Dane, totally, and considering how well I treated them, I think we could have worked it out on our own. As a matter of fact we were pretty far in the process of working it out. Then we went out of town for three days for a family reunion and when we returned, I never heard from him, again. I knew Dane and Mike would see what I was talking about if they would compare their original invoice vs. the revised invoice, due to having to replace 13 additional joises. At the time, I really thought it was an honest mistake and I wasn't worried because I knew they would be back because they still had alot of work to do. I think the key player here in not doing the right thing is the person who claims to have been in business for 31 years, which is Jim Christensen, who, is in OH, and as I state below, OH is where they have an F rating with the BBB. NOTE: I am in the process of trying to post a video of my deck. . I had no idea I would be posting this video or I would have done a better job, but as they say, a picture/video is worth a thousand words. I wasn't sure the audio was working so at one point I stopped explaining what I was taping. Toward the end, I am walking down the stairs and I start at the new joises that were replaced. The first 13 are new joises. The remainder of the joises are old joises that were not replaced. This is what I am talking about below, when I said my invoice payment increased $2,889.22, for labor only, when the only extra work done was 13 joises were replaced. I bought the lumber and supplies needed to do this. I think the supplies were about $150.00. I also didn't mention in the tape or show the fan that I also had to buy additional supplies and pay someone else $75.00 to re-wire. The original fan had a bad switch. and I was told that I would have to get another ceiling fan because they couldn't hook it up. When the guy was there who installed the new screen door for $50, he made a comment on how he liked my fan. When I told him that I loved it and didn't want to get rid of it, he told me that any one that knew what they were doing should have had no problem over-riding the bad switch. Sure enough, he got it working for me. So between the door and the fan, I so far, have had to pay out an additional $236.00 to someone else for work that Affiliated Contracting Consultants should have done, correctly. I thought Dane and Mike were coming back so I was going to let them put the junction box on the wires, but that never got done, either.
