Earl and Tony were great. I had been dealing with a leaking chimney that had caused mold and water damage in an upstairs bedroom for months. It was narrowed down to a masonry issue so I contacted multiple masons. 2 companies were able to come out and take a look including Hensen masonry. Both companies needed to return for a better look and one company never returned but Hensen was back the next day. They were responsive by email regarding their scheduling as they were finishing up another job and they worked around various rain storms that came. They had to grind out mortar on a large chimney wall and then tuck/seal the wall. Got the job done quickly with a reasonable quote. Helped us check for any further leaking by using a hose on the roof to spray the bricks. All fixed! They will be my first call for any masonry issue from here on out and I will not hesitate to refer them to all my friends.

Description of Work
This is a father and son business who, from our experience, really cares about providing quality workmanship. We hired Earl and Tony to remove a pop out below grade basement window and install a glass block window in its place. They arrived on time and carefully removed the old window and steel window frame from our poured concrete wall, which was a difficult process. They installed individual glass blocks with mortar to fill the space and finished both outside and inside of the joints smoothly. They also carefully cleaned any mortar residue from the block window swept the floor and left the work area very clean. |We hoped that by installing a glass block window and regrading slightly around the window, we would eliminate the water pouring into our basement during rain storms around the old style window and frame. This glass block window has solved the problem wonderfully! It also looks very nice in the space and lets in lots of light.

I contacted Earl and had to leave two or three messages until he returned my phone call. At one point he said he was going to swing by my house on the way home from a job but he became too busy and never came. We finally did connect and he was able to visit my home, take measurement, and provide a quote. I did not use him because I didn't feel he was responsive enough for the large job that I required.

. Mr. Hensen arrived on time with all materials needed for window installation. Mr. Hensen and assistant worked quite some time to carefully pry then saw the steel window frame away from poured concrete wall. They answered all of our questions completely and happily. Window opening was measured and spacing calculated for mortar and Individual glass blocks to be spaced evenly. Mr. Hensen left for 1 hr until mortar set before smoothing the mortar between the glass block window area and the concrete wall. The window looks beautiful! It's a shame it's in the basement. In a recent rain storm the window was watertight which was the reason we opted for a glass block window. We would highly recommend Henson Masonry

The ratings above reflect that the job went well. The only negatives were: 1-Workmen showed up to start the work without much notice; 2-Price increased slightly (~$300) above quote due to unforeseen repairs that were required.

Description of Work
We hired Hensen to replace brick facing on the front of this 50-yo house and garage as well as on the outside of the fireplace and chimney (prior to residing it). UNFORTUNATELY, when they tore off the existing faux stone, they discovered that the chimney had major structural problems and damage, problems that probably existed before we bought the house. They came up with a plan, coordinated with the company siding the house, and repaired the chimney - bringing it up to code and ensuring our safety. The brick siding and chimney are beautiful. I will use them again and recommend them to anyone.

Service Provider Response

Im sorry I should have told the potential customer that we most likely wouldn't have time to get to his project right away, but you just think that you would find the time somehow to fit it in. Now I know to just tell people that we can't get to there job until the next season, as much as we would like to.

Description of Work
We had emailed a while back & since I had a small job, Mr. Hensen said he'd give me a call when they had a small opening. Friday morning May 31, he called & emailed, asking if the next morning (Saturday) would work for me. Yes it did. They said they'd be there between 7:30 & 8. Friday afternoon I found some supplies stacked at my house, & Saturday AM at 7:30 the first crew man arrived with more materials. The whole crew was there & working by shortly after 8. They were there until at least 5pm. They replaced 4 rotting out basement windows with glass block. Each window is configured differently, based on where it sits above or below the dirt line, two have screen panels that open, one has the dryer vent, one is all glass block. They also did a separate project. Old house with field stone basement, a section about 5 ft high by 4 ft wide was framed, but a piece of Styrofoam had been all that literally held the dirt outside for 50 years! It was now collapsing & the yard was literally falling into the basement. They dug out a lot of dirt, carrying it up to the yard & dumping it under a tree. I'll use it in gardening. Then, they used stone blocks to close up the opening. I was given clear instructions on how long to wait before opening & closing screen vents & attaching the dryer vent. You have to wait until the mortar is good & solid so you don't accidentally push things off square. | |I called Henson's because of an Angie's list report that talked of him putting in glass block basement windows. That seemed the answer to my basement windows, which had been boarded up since I moved in 18 years ago. If I'd known the difference it would make having light come into the basement, I would have done it 18 years ago! They will be coming back towards end of summer to do some tuck pointing & replace a stone wall that is coming apart.

They were fantastic! We had rotting wooden basement windows and the replaced them with glass block with vents. They were professional, very responsive (within days) with an estimate and half the price of other masons that we contacted for this job. Other reviews state that they are old school masons and that is exactly right. They give a very fair estimate, they get in and get the job done fast, very professional, clean and tidy, answered all our questions and the outcome looks amazing. The best part is they pay attention to the little details. Two of our largest windows had openings that required a 1/2 block to complete the opening. The windows are across the room from each other and they matched the windows so the 1/2 block is on the same end for each window. It's a little thing but you would notice if it was done differently. Quality work and worth every penny spent! I just wish that I had done it years ago.

Gave us a quote and were able to come out that weekend to complete the project. They did high quality work, were friendly, completed the project quickly and were priced lower than other companies in the Madison area. They were much more knowledgeable about installing glass block windows than other masons that I contacted. They were also willing to come to the west side of Madison even though they are located in Marshall. I highly recommend them to others!

I can't say enough good things about Earl and his son Tony. They completed the job in just a day-and-a-half, just the slightest bit above estimate. The windows look solid and, despite their primarily utilitarian nature, beautiful. We'll likely have them back next year to do some work on the foundation.

Henson masonry is old school in the best possible way. They are highly skilled artisans who are creative in combining traditional and modern techniques. I cannot recommend them more highly! In fact I am planning to have them redo my master bath after the holidays. I am sorry I don't have before and after pictures of the transformation of the front of my home. After removing the front stoop because of a disastrous water leak, I found that the entire front and side of the house had been undermined and was going to need extensive repair. The contractor recommended Henson, who thankfully was willing to take on the task. After some discussion Henson suggested I might want to consider stone rather than brick, as it was more in keeping with the Tudor style of the house and also other homes in the neighborhood. The cost, while more than brick, could result in a significantly better appearance. He was spot on! We met at the stoneyard where he helped me choose the stone. He also suggested I have the address etched into a flat stone away from the door, where it would be readable from the street. Another great idea. For the front stoop he brought numerous samples of different sizes and colors of stone for a very personalized and I think beautiful choice. The craftsmanship of their work is magnificent. Every stone was carefully selected to make a pleasing and varied pattern. My patio, which is also stone, over many years, had sunken. Henson found a very large, slightly narrow, stone to place on top of the existing stone in front of the patio door in order to make the entrance more manageable. Also leveled and added some compound that has provided an aesthetically pleasing weed barrier between the stones. Working with Henson was an absolute joy. Great work ethic. Tidy. Terrific ideas. Easy to have around. Even after more than a year, I smile every time I drive into the driveway or walk out my front door.

They showed up on time. They cleaned up. They came back and they had to do an extra thing with the chimney. They charged us exactly what they were going to charge. They even came inside of the house and cleaned up the inside of our fireplace stores because something had dripped down on it and that's the above and beyond. Their estimate was less this year than they were a year ago. We had three other estimates and they were the most reasonable. The quality was outstanding. We used to ask them questions and they had all the time in the world to answer them. They were here when they said they would be here.

Earl checked in while the construction crew was rebuilding my foundation bringing brick samples, but suggested instead, that since I had to replace the whole facade, I might take a look at stone rather than brick, as it would be more in keeping with the neighborhood and with the Tudor stye of the house. It took me a few minutes to recognize his genius, but when I did, we tore off for the stone yard and within an hour, the stone was selected and plans were in place. I would have missed a huge opportunity to upgrade the curb appeal of the house without his suggestion. Another missed opportunity would have been the patio. Instead of overgrown and tired, it is fresh and appealing. Earl and his son are true artisans. The different sizes, shapes and colors of the stones and the mosaic they created is truly work of art. No stone was laid without thought to the total effect. Since the front door is partially blocked from the street, Earl suggested having a stone carved with the street number where it would be clearly visible. Another genius stroke! The front stoop now has steps on two sides and invites one into the house, also Earl's suggestion. I am beyond thrilled with the work of both Earl and his son. They are true artisans. Every time I pull into my driveway, I sit for a minute smiling and am grateful for their expertise and ideas.
Description of Work
I initially hired Earl Henson to replace an aging wood front stoop with flagstone over concrete. He worked with Jim Legler at Legler Concrete to assure that the concrete base and new design of the steps would be at the proper height to make an attractive entry to the house. When they pulled off the old stoop, they discovered that over time water had been leaking down the front of the house and had destroyed a large section of the foundation, thus a relatively small project morphed into major reconstruction to both the front of the house and the adjacent garage wall. All of the brick on the front of the house and garage wall needed to be removed and replaced. This project was lengthy and done during the 100+ degree weather. Earl always called to let me know when he was coming and how long they would be working. He even tracked down the construction crew to nail down some details on their schedule for me. I was SO pleased with the work on the front of the house that I asked him to look at the rear patio area, as I needed a very large stone for a step down at the patio door. The patio was overgrown and a little seedy. Earl suggested, he clean the mosaic stone with a power washer and replace the sand between the stones with a sand/polymer substance that retards plant growth, which he did.
