Everything was done in a very professional manner from the beginning to the end. We stopped by as the work was done, and we were pleasantly surprised by how the crew was executing it. It was well organized, clean, and the crew seemed knowledgeable. Our place requires extra caution with moisture isolation they obviously knew what they were doing. The management, both from McBride and the hardwood floor superintendent was responsive and punctual. In our case, there was an insurance company, a homeowner's association, and a management company involved, not an easy case to deal with so many entities. McBride folks knew exactly how to handle everything and get it moving expediently. After work was done, there was a defective plank (a manufacturer's defect), and they responded and replaced it quickly. This company is on our list now - we'll be happy to hire them for another job
Work was eventually completed and done to our satisfaction. Small jobs do not appear to be a priority.
Everyone we worked with at McBride was personable, courteous, and professional, and we were happy with their quality of work (especially the painter - he was great). The biggest issue we had was communication. We considered doing a bathroom remodel at the same time since our bathroom was already torn up, but due to communication issues we ended up deciding to skip the remodel and just have them complete only the repairs.
Before we could commit to a remodel we needed both the estimate for just the repairs that McBride gave to our insurance company, and we needed a separate estimate for the remodel. We didn’t get either. We asked for the estimate for the repairs multiple times, but McBride never got it to us so we had to get it from the insurance company.
As for the remodel estimate, McBride gave us a ballpark, very rough estimate, but when it was time to get a more specific estimate we never got one. They even had different people come out (such as a flooring person, a glass person, counter person, etc.) to talk to us and take measurements in order to give us a more specific estimate, yet we never got an estimate.
This was all due to constant miscommunication. We kept waiting for information from McBride before we could make certain decisions, and yet McBride kept waiting for us to make decisions. For instance, they didn’t seem to understand (even though we explained it) that we needed prices for different kinds of flooring before we could make a decision on what type of flooring fit our budget (i.e. how much it would cost – based on the measurements that they took – to do the bathroom floor in vinyl vs. ceramic tile vs. natural stone tile.) That seems like common sense, right? Yet they were waiting for us to tell them what kind of flooring we wanted before they did the estimate. So a week or two would go by while we both considered the next step to be in the other person’s court. And this is only one example.
Finally we completely scrapped the remodel and just had McBride do only the repairs. We were tired of not having a toilet upstairs and just needed it done. (To give you a time reference, the water damage happened in July, but it took until May before the repairs were done. This was how long we went back and forth.)
To be fair, maybe the communication issues were just as much our fault as theirs. But we’ve never had an issue with other companies in the past so I have no idea why we would have an issue with McBride. Either way, the communication was bad enough that we won’t hire them in the future.
Instead McBride knows they can bid low, help the insurance company out by not fixing some damage unless the homeowner insists. Then they know that the insurance company will approve. They also told me upfront that they can get changes through that other contractors may not.
The repair result was mediocre at best, and for a price higher than what my preferred contractor bid...because he bid all the items that were eventually done.
As just one example, when none of my interior doors closed (at all) when they completed the work, they insisted, arrogantly, it was because I had an 'old house' and the doors must not have shut before they removed them...even though I had them mark the top of each door so the doors could easily be re-hung on the correct doorway. Eventually (and with great discussion, including legal assistance) they came back out removed each door and checked the top for the location of where the door belonged, re-hung them in their original location, and the doors, of course closed.
So while this was many years ago, it is hard to forget the on-going 6 months of bad experience.
The site manager communicated very poorly, and this caused a lot of stress in itself. Secondly, for many steps of the job, I had to perform quality control--the manager did not perform that function. For example, the first carpenter assigned to install the molding was not a finish carpenter and had trouble with curved cuts. He also invented a corner style that did not match the rest of the house. The painter wanted to fix the carpenter's mistakes with caulk and paint. He became quite angry when I suggested otherwise. I had to ask that a finish carpenter redo the work, and that they send another painter (which they did, and the second painter was careful). I had the feeling McBride's just wanted it done as quickly and cheaply as possible, and hoped you wouldn't notice any mistakes.
Ultimately, because I was on them every step of the way, the work got done and it was acceptable. On the final invoice, they included a charge for taking out the dishwasher and then reinstalling it ($267). The dishwasher was never moved, at my request. This could have been a simple error, but the company was nonresponsive after several inquiries. I had to call my insurance to have the matter taken care of. The site manager should have monitored the work of the subcontractors. The whole process which should have taken a month at most, took about several months. I would characterize it as miserable.
The final results were fantastic. We are very pleased with everything.
Overall, my experience with this company and the individuals assigned to my job was fantastic! I feel lucky to have learned about such an efficient and honest group of people who perform at a very high level. I am recommending them to everyone I know who needs services like what they provide.
