I'd put in the old sliding glass pet door myself and bungled it. It never fit right, and during the winter the cold air would come pouring through the gaps. Jack put in a new door and it fits fine now. The price seemed fair and the work was done in a timely fashion.

It went smoothly without any problems.
Description of Work: My heat pump quit working. Russ converted it to a heater, and installed a new thermostat. . He removed the outside unit, and totally cleaned up the area as well as raked it smooth. He even picked up nails and debris left by a construction worker. I highly recommend ABLE AIR Heating & Cooling, from Enumclaw/Black Diamond Washington.

We first hired Jack back in the fall for a leaking toilet and repairing some water damage from the toilet in our home. We were impressed with the quality and price of his work that we hired him again about a month ago to tackle some of the other household projects, including installing an entry to the crawl space, repairing holes where it appears mice were entering from, repairing a toilet, and other repairs. In the middle of the project our rental unit became suddenly vacant and we asked Jack to tackle the unit. He did it with enthusiasm and intelligence and when he found something that needed to be done, he did it with our ok. We were amazed with the final project. The place was beautiful. Jack is very attentive to detail, quick, hard-working, and gets the job done. We have several other rental properties as well as our home that continuously needs work and we will be hiring Jack for life. Jack of all Trades is the perfect description for the business. He really can do it all.
Description of Work: Remodel of rental unit - installing trim work, recaulking tub, repairing closet doors, installing door knobs, removal of mold and repair of mold damage, paint entire unit.

We were very impressed with the rave reviews Jack received and liked him very much when we met him. Unfortunately we will never know whether we would have agreed with those reviews because we never heard from him again. There was around $10,000 - $15,000 worth of work needed and perhaps it was more than he wanted to take on. We would have thought that, even if he didn't want the job, in the interests of good PR he would have let us know so we could find someone else. Very disappointing!
Description of Work: We asked Jack to give us an estimate for a variety of work on a recently-purchased house. He and his colleague, Ethan, met us at the house as arranged and looked over the needed work and gave us the impression he would be interested in the job.

I apologize to the members. When we met with them they said that house was a fair ways off from closing and that we would be in contact for another meeting. I misunderstood. I'm sure they said they wanted an estimate, but I don't remember hearing that. I am deserving of the review for not checking in and following up

We use him quite regularly. He is fabulous. His prices are appropriate. He is the most responsive and timely guy we've ever met. Our rental home is not too terribly far from his home so he has gone over on a Saturday or Sunday to fix something for us when we were trying to sell it. He is very good at cleaning up all his stuff and he is fabulous at communication. He is just a treasure. We've only used him for work on our rental but we would use him at our home. He will be willing to come to our area if we had a day's worth of work for him. His hourly rate is very appropriate.

Jack provided us a quote which was in the same ballpark as other quotes. What we liked about Jack was that he was punctual and friendly, so we went with him. Once he started, he found that the job would be a little more involved than initially anticipated. Even though it took longer (double of his anticipated time, at no fault of his), he kept to his quote. He has also followed up to ensure everything was to our satisfaction. I will absolutely use Jack of All Trades on any other projects we have at our house.

Jack performed the many, many tasks timely and flawlessly. He has the highest level of integrity and honesty. You can trust him to perform the job in your absence and comfortably know it is done correctly. He does every task at your location ad if it were his home. The man has many skills to perform almost any task as illustrated by his documented skill set. He is definitely the designated professional individual to complete any requirements we need resolved and I recommend him to my friends and co-workers. We will continue to utilize his services in the future. He is in demand yet he successfully priorities the criticality of the tasks to exceed and complete your job need. Professionalism and affordability are key components for most consumers and trust my word Jack exceeds both components in all aspects in his business. Jack operates at an A+ capacity.
Description of Work: Jack successfully engaged in solving a very complex plumbing issue in our 4-plex in Kent in the kitchen and bathroom. He additionally completed a major list of miscellaneous requirements that required attention from installing molding in the unit and completed the task flawlessly. Jack , unlike other providers completes every task (big or small) with the upmost professionalism. Jack is extremely busy however his quick response due to another plumbing issue was beyond the call of duty . He knew exactly what needed to be performed to resolve the plumbing issue quickly to avoid major issues. His services were very reasonable for the list of tasks and plumbing jobs he completed.

We have used Jack a number of times for work on our rental property. Jack has always been very responsive and willing to fit our work into his busy schedule. He is very skilled at most everything which makes him our first choice for fixing everything from plumbing to carpentry to general issues. We have an older house that we rent out and Jack has tackled many repair projects for us. We really appreciate his creativity and problem-solving skills - once we identify the problem he always comes up with a great fix. He comes prepared with all of the supplies needed to complete the job. The work he had done for us has been very high quality. Clean up is always very thorough. Jack always offers to go above and beyond - easily doing things that we would struggle to do ourselves. We always enjoy Jack - in addition to being a hard work and very skilled at what he does, he is very outgoing and interesting to talk to. We feel very fortunate to have found him through Angie's List and would recommend him very highly.
Description of Work: Jack and Ethan Installed handrails on 2 sets of porch steps. They also installed 2x2 posts so that the stairs would meet code requirements. We had a number of other things scheduled to be fixed but will need to wait until the existing tenant vacates the property.

Jack and Ethan work as a well oiled team. They are both pleasant and know what they are doing. They show up prepared, get the job done and clean up after themselves (thanks very much for that). I never know what to say about the price; I feel we pay for knowledge and preparedness and it does not come cheap or free! I have used their services before and am not disappointed, will call again when needed.

We bought our house six months ago and have had Jack (and his employee Ethan) back about four times now to address repairs and other items that the previous owners neglected. Jack and Ethan are two of the most professional service people I've ever encountered. They know our house better than we do. Whenever I email Jack, he responds within 12 hours and schedules to come by. He and Ethan are prompt, do their impeccable work quickly, and are lovely to deal with. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have found them on Angie's List. I can't imagine anyone doing a better, more conscientious job than these two guys. They're simply the best!
Description of Work: Jack and his coworker Ethan did an array of projects for us, from replacing 30-foot lightbulbs and installing lights to hanging pictures, hanging large flat-screen TVs on the wall, repairing/repainting walls, installing a new door, and fixing a fountain with a burned-out motor.

Jack treated our job as a priority even though it was a very small job. He got back to us promptly, and arranged to have one of his employees do the work within a few days, even though he was completely booked with big jobs. Ethan, the workman, was very professional, did beautiful work and was generally a pleasure to work with.

I believe I was the first Angie's List member to post a review on Jack of All Trades, a few years ago now. Since then he is my go-to guy whenever I need anything done in my home and I have called upon his services several times. The first time Jack came to my home was to look at a door that needed to be installed, a job two other handymen/contractors had declined because it was beyond their skills. Jack's response then was "There's always a way." That sold me. On this last visit, Jack and Ethan knocked several things off my list all in one day. Some of the tasks were things I might have been able to do myself, but they're so much quicker and better at it. I had built a cover for the crawl space access, but the plywood I used wasn't lasting long. Jack picked up a sheet of marine plywood, which should last longer in our wet weather. They had it constructed in short order and had time to put two coats of paint on it. Jack also took the initiative to add two handles which will make it much easier for me to deal with. I appreciate things like that about Jack. He's always thinking. The ceiling exhaust fan in the kitchen was probably the original one installed when the house was built in 1954. It didn't do much for removing smoke or steam. I purchased a new replacement fan, with the idea of having Jack swap them out, but I was disappointed I couldn't find anything close to my old retro-looking fan with the metal grate. After climbing to the roof and into the attic to check out how the old fan was installed, Jack determined it might be easier to rework the old fan since it fit into the ductwork so well, and to clean the filter at the roof level. Cleaning the filter alone made a big difference and another contractor might have stopped there. But Jack and Ethan disassembled the old fan, discovering some frayed electrical something-or-other and did not advise reinstalling it as is. So they took apart the new fan I'd purchased, using the motor and fan blades from the new and the mounting rack from the old and they were in business. This also meant they could re-use the retro grate. I was a very happy camper. Between the two of them they completed all the tasks in six hours, including the deck cleaning, hauling, door fixing and painting, working in tandem and separately as needed. I've always been impressed with Jack, and am impressed with his right-hand man, Ethan, as well. Both are quick workers, very friendly and professional. They take extra care to clean up after they're done working, leaving things cleaner than when they started. They know a lot about how to do a lot of things, and on the few occasions they can't do it themselves, will research to see who can. Such as replacing a wobbly wooden handrail on the front steps. When I mentioned that I would really prefer a wrought iron one, Jack said he knew where he could get some standard ones, but remembered that Ethan knows someone who does custom, more artsy iron work. So we'll check that out. Someone else might have just tried to sell me on the work to replace the existing wooden handrail. I love dealing with people who actually listen to their clients, don't mind spending a few minutes getting to know them so they can better serve their needs, and think outside of the box. I've always found Jack of All Trades to do honest, thoughtful work for a fair price. I have no hesitation trusting Jack and Ethan, and know they will always come through with flying colors. I highly recommend Jack of All Trades!
Description of Work: A long "honey do" list: built and painted new cover for crawl space access; fixed a storm door so it closed properly; painted front door and threshold; hauled big heavy stuff to dump; cleaned deck; cleaned vent to ceiling exhaust fan in kitchen and replaced parts so that it now works well. On a previous recent occasion, Jack also patched hole in drywall under kitchen sink left by plumber and cleared tub drain.

The jobs went great. What I appreciated most about the estimate, wasn't necessarily the price (he came in the middle of 4 estimates), but the thoroughness of the estimate. Everything was clearly laid out with how he arrived at the estimate, from making the dump rump to get rid of materials, to picking up the necessary supplies. He detailed as much of the project as could be expected. My house is over 70 years old, so as I've learned in past projects, there is much that can't be anticipated. Jack and his assistant, Ethan, were timely in their responsiveness, both before, during and after the projects. He did a professional job protecting the surrounding household items as he worked and cleaned up great after each day. I had provided Jack with a pre-formed mantle for use, but when it became clear that the mantle was not going to be satisfactory, he custom built me mantle that was so much nicer than the one I had intended to use. In the process he refurbished my wood burning stove. It looks brand new. He also re-wired the cable in my house, so I no longer have the unsightly TV cable running across the floor of my living room. After the great experience with the fireplace, I had Jack back to paint all the ceilings, wood paneling, doors, and millwork throughout the house. It took a bit longer than I expected but the finished product was worth the wait. During both of the those projects Jack took it upon himself to fix a few other small items around the house, such as the leaking toilet flapper, and replacing some missing outlet covers. I am already making my "Honey-do" list and looking forward to having Jack back to help me get all of those little bothersome jobs crossed off.
Description of Work: Jack remodeled my fireplace surround including building a mantle and doing tile work. I followed up with a interior paint job.

Our water heater flooded the basement. We found it early in the morning and I called Jack. He was able to come out that same day in the early afternoon. He picked up a new water heater and replaced the old one. The new water heater was a few inches too tall so we had to exchange it but Jack handled the entire process, cleaned up and removed old water heater. We were so glad that he could handle this all in the same day and we once again had hot water. Jack and his employee were professional and did a wonderful job.

MISSING NECKLACE!! This is not the type of review I expected to be writing, and definitely not one that I am happy to write; but the facts are the facts and here are the facts: A valuable ($850) tahitian pearl and diamond pendant necklace went missing when Jack and his two assistants, Tom and Ethan, were working in my house. They arrived and got set up early on a Saturday morning. I had to go out for a couple of hours and left them to do the work. The necklace was in a box on my bedside table with some other jewelry items of lesser value. I was getting pressed for time that morning and made a conscious decision to leave the necklace there. Normally I lock up and/or hide my nice things. When I went to put the necklace on early Monday morning as I was leaving for a business trip, it was not there. I live alone, and Jack and his guys were the only people in my house all weekend. I called Jack about the missing necklace. He and his assistants deny any knowledge regarding it's disappearance. A police report has been filed. For skeptics who may think that this is some lame ploy to get out of paying for the work that Jack and his guys did, I have sent payment for the work. I agreed to pay them for the work and they did the work. I believe in living up to my obligations. This is also not a ploy for insurance money. The value of the necklace is less than my deductible. I have not, and will not, file a claim for it. For those who think I was foolish to leave the necklace out, I agree with you. I would certainly do things differently if I had the chance. One last fact: I will NEVER hire these people again!

Response from Jack of All Trades
On Saturday, September 21, we installed a security door for this member. My two crew members, Ethan and John, and I were on the site for approximately six hours. The job was completed successfully to my knowledge, and when I emailed the member the following Wednesday (September 25) to see if everything was to her satisfaction and to inquire about further work we had discussed, she responded with a friendly email saying she loved the door and would get back to me about the additional work. She called the following Tuesday, October 1, and left a voice mail, saying she knew I was on vacation but asked me to call her back when I got a chance. On the same day, I drove 30 miles to get into cell phone range so that I could return her call. I was shocked when she said she was missing a necklace, accused me of taking it, and told me I had 72 hours to return it or she would call the police and ruin me by posting her story on Angie’s List and “anywhere else my business was listed.” Understandably, she was upset, but the threatening nature of her call was alarming. As quickly as I could, I contacted the crew members who had been on site. They denied knowing anything about the necklace. We could recall going into the house only to plug in and unplug a power cord. I communicated this information to the member Friday, October 4, with an email, stating we would be happy to cooperate with authorities, including fingerprinting, polygraphs or any other means necessary. I did not hear back from the member until this post. I have served many clients during the past several years and have earned their trust through honest work and fair prices. Several clients have entrusted me with keys to their houses to work on ongoing jobs. I have never had a complaint of this nature before.

During the last very heavy rain the rain gutter overflowed causing water to flow into the window well and then into the house causing flooding in a basement bedroom. I had several people come out to give an estimate to re-slope the gutters and discuss a back-up system in case the gutter over flowed again. Jack was great! He absolutely listened to all of my concerns and had ideas to fix both problems--the rain gutters and to fix the flow of the water as a back up in case the gutter overflowed in the future. he understood the consequences of these heavy rainstorms. The tenants were even impressed and sent a text to me saying, "you guy did an excelllent job." Since the job was completed we had another huge rainstorm and everything held--no problems. Jack is awesome!
Description of Work: Re-sloped rain gutters, checked downspout & drainage to the street, built brick/concrete barrier around window well and drainage system to prevent flooding and move water to tie in with downspout drainage.

Jack was prompt, courteous, professional and efficient. He checked the electrical issues: fixed the wired in smoke detectors that had been beeping, examined the furnace and replaced the outlet to a child-proof outlet. I was worried about the electrical panel but it was functioning properly. Jack found a battery put in incorrectly in the smoke detector and the system then worked properly. The furnace issue was not due to the electrical panel so I contacted a furnace company that ended up replacing the control panel in the furnace that was faulty. Jack also fixed a cupboard door that had come off the hinges. Once Jack checked out the electrical panel, and found the error of the smoke detectors I felt relieved. He did a great job of finding the problems and solving as much as he could. I had the furnace co. replace the control panel and now all is working very well. Jack was great--so quick and professional.
Description of Work: Had some electrical issues re: smoke detectors, furnace that didn't turn on and outlet that sparked. Also cupboard door that came apart. Jack came out to check out the isues and fix as much as he could.

Earlier, I had written a positive review for Jack based on the work he had done in my daughter's living rooms and bedrooms. At the time, we scoped the bathroom remodel as a secondary stage and I noted a follow up review would be done once it was completed. The bathroom has now been completely remodeled and was done with the same great level of professionalism and quality. As I was not at the job site, Jack kept me informed of the progress and sent me pictures as the work was completed. There was a very old shower in the bathroom that needed removed. Jack was very open about discussing the unknowns of what could be found once we pulled it out and saw how the plumbing had been done behind it. He was also very good at coming up with solutions once we saw that there was a need to improve the plumbing and drainage system. Overall, the remodel was done on time and on budget. The room (along with the other improvements completed earlier) have transformed my daughter's old house into a much more contemporary and fresh look. We hope to continue the improvement into the kitchen and other living areas next spring and will look to continue working with Jack to get this done.
