The technician was very polite, punctual and knowledgeable. He called before our scheduled time frame to let me know his expected arrival time. He explained the checks he was doing and gave me a heads up on symptoms to look for if something didn't seem quite right. This checkup was purchased through Angie's List and the company was slow to schedule our appointment due to the large turnout purchasing the checkups.
Description of Work: This was an annual gas furnace checkup.

Came out the day after I called during an extremely busy time of year (we were having an extended cold spell) and confirmed one of the pressure switches had gone bad. Unfortunately, the part was only available from Montana so had to wait a couple days for it to come in. UMS stayed on top of the shipment though and the technician was back out promptly after the switch arrived and repaired the furnace. I would recommend UMS and will use them again. Other service providers I called were not available for a week or more!
Description of Work: Diagnosed and replaced failed pressure switch.

the work went fine once it was actully done. When the Tech showed up, he was actually pretty awesome. But, Scheduling after purchasing an Angie's LIst "DEAL" was a bit of a nightmare. I believe there were some issues with Angie's List and the special. I don't know if the schedulers were actually getting the info from Angies List. I had to call a number of times to schedule the service. They did not call after I scheduled via Angies list. nor did Angies list do anything when I told them I still had not heard anything. In short,.. the "System" did have record of my purchase, but no one was told or no one tried to schedule me. So if you do use these guys (and they are good at what they do I believe) DO NOT EXPECT ANGIES LIST PURCHASE TO GET YOU ON THE BOOKs.. YOU SHOULD CALL THEM ASAP after you purchase any "Deal" or you will be waiting for weeks on end. DO NOT.. I repeat, DO NOT rely on online or email transactions or communication through Angies List.

We purchased two Big Deals from Universal Mechanical and also hired them to install a gas line to our dryer and to troubleshoot our fireplace. |So all-together, we did about $1,500 worth of business. We came in contact with four of their employees, including their manager Rhett. |All were very professional and thorough. Pricing was fair and they did all work with great workmanship. |We would use them again.

It worked out fine. The man who came out did a good job. I did not look down at the furnace with him. I did not watch what he did but he seemed to be pretty competent and pleasant enough. His work was fine and I had a very good interaction with him. I spent just what was advertised. He came out within a couple of weeks after I purchased the big deal. It was an excellent experience overall. His price, the quality of his work, his responsiveness, punctuality and professionalism were excellent. I plan on using him again.

On 12/13, our heater got a problem and it shut down the flame by itself. The technician checked and said the flame sensor need to be replaced and quoted $129 for the labor and $494 for the part. He replaced the part and it worked when he left (the problem didn't repro consistently any way). We left for our vacation in a few hours and that is why we want it to be fixed quickly. On 12/25, we got back and found the same problem. 12/26, a different technician came and found the problem was there was some water in some pipe which caused the flame to shut down. He removed the water and then everything works fine. When asked, he said the first diagnosis could be wrong, but he couldn't comment on refund. He didn't charge anything. On 12/30, I called UMS and left message to discuss the situation, but no one replied On 1/15, I called again and Curt answered. He checked the receipts and talked to the technicians and told me that there were two different problems which cause the same problem and they fixed both. So there is nothing to refund. It is hard for anyone having common sense to believe that there are two different problems which cause the same issue happened exactly the same time. I argued for a while and stopped since I don't think I can change anything and more arguing just hurt myself.
Description of Work: Our heater was broken. They came to fix. The first time they didn't get it right. The second time they did. But for the false diagnosis they did the first time which leads to a part (~$500) replacement, they refused to refund anything

Response from Universal Mechanical Service Co Inc
[Member name removed] had called our company on 12-13-2013 for a furnace that was not igniting. When our technican arrived he checked the furnace operation and cycled it serveral times with no failures. Then after extended amount of furnace run time the unit failed on a flame sensor, Our technican then checked several cycles to comfirm the failed flame sensor. He proposed a flame sensor replacement to the customer who agreed to price and component and our technican replaced the flame sensor. Our technican then checked the ignition squence and operation of the furnace. The furnace was operating normally when we departed the residence. On 12-26-2013 [Member name removed] called and said his furnace wasn't working and we sent out a technican to his home at no charge and checked out the furnace operation. Our technican found the the furnace would not go through the ignition squence. Our technician found water in the pressure switch tubing which he cleared then cleaned the pressure port and checked several cycles of the ignition. Our technican checked overall furnace operation and the unit is currently working normally. The failures we found on this furnace were two different issues and we feel a full refund is not warranted.

My wife and I just bought a new house, and wanted a furnace inspection. We purchased a furnace inspection on Angie's List for $79. It was a great price and great service. I was at work when Universal Mechanical came to the house, so my wife met the technician. He didn't try to upsell her, he simply did the inspection, told her everything looked good, told her how often we needed to change the filters, and the size of filter to use. We will definitely use Universal Mechanical in the future, and I will recommend them to others.

Service provider had a large response to the Angie's List coupon and couldn't get us scheduled for an appt for a few weeks, which wasn't a problem. They arrived to provide the service and due to the timing and work, I had my adult daughter here to let them in to work on the furnace. My daughter thought they provided fine service but here are the things I found wrong after they left: 1) I thought they were to replace the filters as a part of the promotion, but instead they used my extra filters I had purchased online. When installing the filters, not understanding how to install them, the technician tore up some of the iinsulation on the inside of the housing that holds the filters. 2) The technician removed the reminder sticker on the front of the furnace with the past dates of service and discarded the item likely because it had the name of another service company on it. It is not within his right to do that. 3) Soon after the service and through today the furnace has a "clicking sound" when it runs. It crosses my mind that he is looking for a return call for more work - so I will never call this company again. I will search another repair company - wish I could remember the original company that was on the sticker...

They found that the heat exchanger was leaking and while the part is covered by warranty the labor is not. They quoted me a repair (labor only) of nearly $1,000.00. Heart attack time!! I called around and then asked if they could lower the price, which they did but not by much. I think the per hour labor that is being charged is somewhat over the top which seems to be typical of this and the plumbing industry.

On August 2nd, I bought a $59.00 Furnace Tune Up Special from Universal Mechanical Service Co. Before buying the special, i called them to make sure that they had the right size filters for my home. It was built in 1992 and has two air intakes and filters - a 16x30x1 and a 14x22x1. They confirmed that they had these filters and so I went ahead and bought the special. While looking at their website I learned that they also clean air ducts so when I called to make an appointment, I decided to get both the air ducts cleaning and the furnace tune-up. After I made the appointments, I received an email asking me to pay 50% for the air duct cleaning up front and 50% at the time of service. I felt very uncomfortable paying in advance for a service that I hadn't received so I cancelled the air duct cleaning. It turned out for the best as I had the duct service completed by another company for a much reasonable price. On August 14th, I received a call from them indicating that they didn't have the 14x22x1 filter. It really irked me since I had specifically asked them about it. So I called around and found a company in Bellevue that had one. On August 15th, it took a lot of back and forth communication between me and their coordinator to get the schedule confirmed. I left a message for the technician but he didn't called me back. Although he did call their coordinator who confirmed that he would install the filter that I bought. The technician completed the service on August 15th ... it was very rudimentary ... took 15 minutes to complete. I was expecting a more thorough inspection, cleaning, and tune up. The technician was required to send a report that evening but I didn't get a report from the technician so on August 26th, I sent email and finally received a one page form with a few fields filled in. Needless to say, this was a disappointing encounter and service. One aspect that was good was that their coordinator, Heather, was very responsive to my inquiries and apologetic for the inconvenience caused by not having the filter. I wish that they would have been upfront about that in the first place. So for next spring, I'll go back to the previous service provider who is a bit more expensive but does a much better and thorough job.

Rhett from Universal came over to provide an estimate. He was punctual, professional, and called before he came as promised. He was thorough and went through every room in the house to measure and provide an accurate estimate. He was also kind enough to quickly inspect the furnace and identify the problem. He was also the one who alerted me to the possibility of replacing the heat exchange and looked up whether it was eligible for warranty for parts which ended up pretty much halving the cost of the job had I elected to do it. He also called his service department and had another associate call with the estimate for repair. Later he gave me the full offer for a new furnace. The price was higher than others, so I ended up not doing the job with Universal. However, I appreciate the service of Rhett and his colleagues and would try them again if I needed them.

As new home owners, we put off getting a furnace inspection done. We found a great deal for an inspection on Angies list. Universal was great about getting in touch with us within 24hrs to schedule an appointment. They were heavily book, but very flexible about finding a time that worked for us. They were very punctual, thorough, and respectful. They came in through the garage to avoid tracking dirt through our home, took time to answer all questions we had about the furnace, explained to us about required/optional maintenance for our heating/air system, and told us about a humidifier we didn't know we had. Glad we used them!
