They make be good for misc. repairs but NOT anything to do with drywall. We are about to pay someone else to fix the unsightly wall this weekend.
"At Mr Handyman we guarantee our work and this does not sound like a job we would have left uncorrected. We also follow up our jobs to see how things went. If we have a flaw in our result that looks like what is described here, we would certainly not leave it. We would return free of charge and correct any issues that may have occurred during this repair. We charge to do the job right, not to do it again. We know we are not perfect but we do try and follow up so that if there is a flaw we can get it addressed in a timely manner. This work was done over 1.5 years ago and we did do a quality assurance call and email within a week and neither were responded to. It’s difficult to know something went wrong when we don’t get a response back. We will follow up again to see if we can get this corrected. If you have an issue with ours or any contractors work, it is respectful to call them and let them know. Repairs are not like new construction. We end up dealing with vast array of unknown materials and unknown processes and standard techniques don’t always work. Letting us know there is a problem is the first step to figuring out how to fix it and then getting it fixed."
Interior door was installed quickly and well.
If you use them, be sure they send someone that knows the work so you do not pay for their learning curve...
Well, this is where things got lost:
Unfortunately, after the appointment, the paperwork was either not turned in by the tech or somehow things just got lost in the shuffle. After contacting Bob (the owner @ Mr. Handyman) several times and explaining how wonderful his service was on the front end but how disappointed I was with the follow-up, Bob immediately responded with a gratis invoice for 2 hours of service. Gotta admit, this is excellent customer service and a way to win a customer back! Bob gets it! Things happen and I will definitely give them another try!
"We have reviewed this project and I would have to agree with their perception. Our initial visit was not complete. We were asked to replace a thermostat face plate but the change was actually a programmable thermostat and these require knowledge of the HVAC which we do not have. As a result we were not able to replace the thermostat and recommended they contact the HVAC company that installed it for proper maintenance. We can do a lot of things but we have limits and this was one of them. We were asked to re-connect a microwave vent in the cabinet. This we did but did not know that the microwave had been replaced and that the exhaust vent was no longer located in the correct place. We did find this issue and offered to re-locate the vent for them but they did not want to pay extra for this service and asked us not to do it. We did install the ceiling fan but were not able to get the light working on the initial visit. We did return and correct the damaged light connection at no extra cost. We do not charge for non-productive work and we returned free of charge to correct some issues so by the time we left we had completed all of the tasks we could do. We charged only for things we completed."
"Thank you for providing feedback. While I wish the response was better it does allow us to share why these kinds of things happen and what the differences in service might be. I remember this call and did share that we would schedule the door install for a full day. I also said that an exterior door install is typically a half day to full day installation and that while we would schedule a full day and provided pricing for the full day that does not mean that is what it would cost. We bill for the time it takes to install the door properly and not the time we scheduled. If things go well and the door is installed, sealed up, trimmed and hardware is transferred, ready for paint it could be done in half a day. If things don’t go well (wall is warped or not plumb, door doesn’t fit the opening, we find rot in the framing, etc.) we would need more time and it could take up to a full day to complete the install. We guarantee our work so we need to be sure the install is problem free or we get calls to come back and correct things and we do so free of charge. Unlike the box stores, we don’t sell doors and we don’t use lowest paid subcontractors who are motivated to install fast and not necessarily right for these jobs. We use background checked employee technicians with a minimum of 15 years of experience so they know how to properly install a door. They arrive on-time in a uniform and a well-marked van so you know who is coming to your door and they provide a business card upon arrival. We’ve corrected many installations provided by box store installers. We very often ask Angie’s List customers to call or email us because the messaging system provided is very clumsy and does not allow a fluid interaction. We also don’t just give pricing information because there are many things that can affect the price and many of the things I listed above would be missed. When is the last time someone called a Mercedes dealer and asked how much their cars cost? Again thanks for calling us. I hope this helps explain some of the differences and that if you have any problems with your door you will give us a call back. Thanks Bob"
The service provider was prompt and professional in attitude. I walked through the whole list, and said that I knew it might not all fit in, and identified the most important tasks from my point of view. The provider said "we'll see what we can get done" and decided to start outside and then move inside. He did a great and professional job on the outside lights, but it took over an hour to put up two brackets for a shelf because of where the studs were located. I indicated that nothing heavy was going on it, and so maybe we could use just one stud so that it could be placed well. He insisted on mounting a lightweight shelf into studs only, rather than using drywall anchors, and so now my shelf is very solid but one bracket is at the very end and the other is close to the middle. It looks strange, but I agreed just to get the shelf up and keep moving.
At around that point he announced my time was up , and I told him that several critical items on the list were not done and I needed the medicine cabinet at least mounted. He called his office to get permission for an extra half hour, and did mount the medicine cabinet - however, he had trouble with the studs and the weight, so I have two very visible holes (first attempts) in the back of the cabinet when you open the doors, and the 4 mounting bolts are visibly not aligned. He also left the shelves inside taped to the bottom when he put the doors up, so I had to take the doors off again just to put the shelves in place. I had identified three critical tasks - two of which he said would only take a minute - and he never got to those very quick tasks. He said I needed to schedule another appointment - at a minimum $250 charge. I was billed $110 per hour for 5 hours, which was higher than the per hour price I was quoted, and charged $10 for 10 screws. This seemed a bit out of line to me.
The work completed ranged from great to OK, but I was very disappointed at how long it look and and the lack of prioritization when I clearly indicted what was most important. The hour-long shelf was not high on the list, and the 2 repairs that would take minutes never were done.
"Thank you for taking the time to provide valuable feedback. I can see from your passion and your rating that this was not the best job we have done. An average rating is not what we want so we have called and left a couple of messages but have not been able to get a hold of you to find out what we can do to address the concerns. Having a list of items that is more than we can complete on a single visit is not unique. Many people will add things to their list when they find out that we can take care of them. We give the customer we are working for the priority and will typically stay to finish added tasks. I think that in this case the following visit was also one of these extended lists so the technician felt he needed to get back to complete tasks he has previously started. This is no excuse for not getting your jobs done so please give us a call if you are willing to work with us again. While we do have a standard service call for each scheduled visit we usually just continue jobs from where we left off if the list was longer than what we could get done on the initial visit. This would have been the case for your project list and would not have included another service call. We guarantee our work. We charge to do the job right but we do not charge to correct issues. If we need to correct anything we have done wrong we would do so at no charge to you. It may not be clear what the technician used from his van but we don’t charge $10 for 10 screws. We do however provide van stock at a bit higher rate that what Home Depot sells them for. The value of having materials that don’t require a special hardware store trip has a lot more value than just the cost of the material itself to we do our best to keep our vans well stocked with common home repair materials. Thanks Bob"
In the bathroom he fixed the counter cap tile piece that had come off and took care of the cracked and flaking grout in the counter/backsplash seam.
I really appreciated Phil's work. He is very personable and pleasant to work with. The entire time he was keeping me informed of my options and explaining why different things may have occurred.
