gutter repair, handyman service
  + 0 more
He came on time. Since he couldn't do the work I requested as it was too wet, I had him install a gutter on the shed. He measured and then left to get the gutter. Came back and had to cement 2 pieces together. While it dried he went back to the office and put on their schedule the downspout repair I wanted. It will have to be done on a warmer and drier day. When it came to the bill, I requested a copy of the gutter he had purchased. He said he couldn't do it as the company had to pay for it. Also he said he wouldn't charge for the time he was gone. The total time from start to finish, including picking up the gutter was 2 hours. I did however get a $25 discount. A couple of days ago, I got a follow up call from the office and said I had requested a copy of the gutter. I was told they charge extra for the supplies and therefore I couldn't have a copy. I paid for the time he picked up the supplies so I felt they shouldn't add a charge for the supplies they picked up. At that time I was told there was a 2 hour minimum charge so that is why the bill was so high. I feel since I had him place the gutter on the shed instead of wasting his time and going back to the office I shouldn't have to pay the 2 hour minimum charge. Yes he was here 2 hours but he told me he wouldn't charge while he was in the office. So I guess it is a standoff. "Bob" who answers the phone.....no answering service, knows his business. This is why I will have them do the downspout repair probably in the spring. I would not think twice about using them again or referring them to other people.
Description of Work: Came to repair downspouts on house. It was too wet so I had him put a gutter on a shed.

At first the company asked for details. I measured for the baseboard and bought the baseboard with some extra material and gave the company that information. Bob showed up early by about 15 minutes. He was prepared to start immediately replacing baseboard. I had hired him for 4 hours of work. He completed that job and continued to look for other repairs he could do while there. He was very professional and worked continuously. Perfect for the job. It was a great experience!

The experience was great. They showed up promptly, dashed to Home Depot for some materials, and completed the job in a timely manner. Workmanship was excellent. Very pleased.
Description of Work: It's been a year and I'm a little hazy on the cost of service, but the work they did was great. The handyman they sent removed the water damaged bottom of a kitchen cabinet under the sink and replaced it with a new bottom. Their choice of materials and workmanship was excellent (and I'm pretty particular).

The estimate was for new tile in a master bath. Floor, Vanity countertops and around a tub. Floor tile only in a very small second bath. We are supplying the tile. The only materials they would be supplying would be floor underlayment, and screws. The bid was over $9,000 for the master bath and over $2,000 for the second bath. With taxes added it would amount to over $12,000 for the work. This was so ridiculously high that we got 3 other bids. Two of the bids were around $3,000 and one bid at $2150. I just figured they didn't want the job, so they bid it very high, hoping we were ignorant enough to think it was a fair deal and they could laugh all the way to the bank. I will never contact this company in the future.

Response from Mr. Handyman of SE Bellevue
If this was indeed an apples to apples comparison of the proposals, then I would have to agree that we made a very serious pricing error. We are very competitive in projects like this one, especially for bathroom remodeling where we rarely ever lose. One of the reasons we are so successful in our bathroom projects is that there are no surprises. Once we quote a price for a given scope of work, the homeowner never has to worry about the overall cost of the project increasing. Nor do they worry about unfinished or defective work. That is also why we are so highly rated by other AL members.

The technician, Bob was great. He arrived on time and got right to work. My only complaint is that I was charged $40.00 for a piece of plywood that was about 12 inches by 24 inches. I supplied the child-proofing materials, so cost wasn't issue. Bob hadn't worked on that kind of project before, but he read the directions and had them done quickly and efficiently. If I need a handman service again, I will call Mr. Handyman - but I will definitely try to supply my own materials to keep the cost in check.

Vic arrived right on time. Put on booties before entering the house. Knew what he was doing and did it well. He will return to install some deadbolts which I purchased and install some wood frames on outside windows that are rotting. He was professional and just an all-around nice person. Am more than delighted with him and his work.

Mr. Handyman estimated the window cost at just under $200 and the labor cost (for four hours) at $436 -- which places their hourly rate at $109.00. The final total was $263 for materials and $436 for labor. The window went in fine in three hours but Bob the manager had to deliver the window, which necessitated a second person coming to the site. I didn't understand why Vic, the primary worker, didn't just bring the window with him in his van -- it seemed an excuse to need a second person, especially since Bob did nothing more than stand back and watch Vic work and try to upsell me on gutter protection they could also install. I was charged $94 (an hour of extra labor help) to have Bob there, which conveniently brought the labor total to the four hours quoted in the estimate. I'm not sure why Bob's rate is $94/hour but the four hour quote works out to $109/hour. All right, I expected four hours, so I'll give them that. What I don't appreciate is the lack of customer service, friendliness, and professionalism of their worker Vic. When the job was done and he was writing up the final paperwork, I asked him about a variety of ugly marks left on the back deck. He said they were dirt and would quickly wash off. It was obvious they weren't dirt so I went outside and shot a water hose over them and they didn't come off. He then said they were made by the ladder and he could go back on the clock to work to take them off. In other words, I should pay $109 per hour to have him remove marks that weren't there before he arrived. When Bob was onsite, he mentioned to Vic that a tarp should have been put down. When I suggested this to Vic, he got very defensive and said that worker safety demanded that ladders not be put on tarps; again he insisted if I wanted the marks removed, he'd go back on the clock and work on them. No concern was shown, just a stern face presenting the facts. Regardless if the marks on the deck were avoidable with a tarp or not, Vic did not try to make it right. He simply argued with me and got more defensive. His attitude was take it or leave it. Even if the marks had turned out to be only dirt, he hadn't made an attempt to wash them off. Instead of admitting that he missed this part of clean-up, he argued and left me with the feeling that he didn't care. Now it will take an hour of MY labor to fix the deck. Because of Vic's lack of professionalism, friendliness, and spirit of customer service, I will not use Mr. Handyman again. For something so simple to remedy, they lost a customer. That's not working smart, no matter who wins the argument. Update: I received a phone call and apology from Bob, the manager. He agreed to take off an hour of labor to make up for the hour it took me to remove the marks left on my deck by the technician. I appreciate Bob's effort to reach out on this matter and take constructive action. The only caveat is how Bob's response downplays the rude and unprofessional behavior of his technician and makes it seem like it was a safety issue. If they don't put ladders on tarps for safety reasons -- fine, then how else do they mitigate damage or resolve it when it happens? Safety doesn't explain rudeness or the marks left on the deck. In effect, they are saying, for safety reasons one can expect damage to your property and if the customer wants that damage rectified, a charge will be incurred. Be forewarned: there is no expectation that one's property will be left as they found it -- they can't do that -- for safety reasons.

Response from Mr. Handyman of SE Bellevue
I am sorry this was perceived as such a negative. Everything went right on this project except for one small thing. It only takes one thing and for this we apologize and promise to be more complete and to learn from our mistakes. This review was the first indication I had that there was a problem. I called this customer to try and understand, apologize and to find out what we could do to correct the problem. The customer indicated that he didn't like the technician’s response to his request and that he had spent an hour cleaning up the deck scuff and did not want us back. I agreed with him on this and we apologized and gave him back an hour of time on the invoice to compensate him for the inconvenience. We don’t compromise on technician safety so we don’t bill for time spent assisting on the job for safety. The second technician was needed to assist with very heavy ladders, setting up planks and handling windows on a second story wall opening. The second technician was on the project for 3 hours but only billed for an hour of productive time. No charge was assessed for safety assist or standing around between tasks. Thanks Bob

Our technician, Vic arrived on time each day which is something we really appreciated. During the three day project, Vic proved to be very hard working and proficient in every aspect of the job. We were very impressed with his attention to detail and overall knowledge of construction and installation. Vic answered many questions we had about the current job and gave us tips and ideas about additional remodeling we're planning in the near future. This was easily the best experience we've ever had with a contractor and will be using Mr. Handyman again very soon.

My garage had an unusual quirk which was there since the house was originally built. Correcting it involved reframing a wall. Overall it was a smaller job, but somewhat complex. Initially I wasn't even sure how to solve the problem. The person that came out to bid the job clearly had a lot of experience with structural work and proposed a great solution. The ingenuity and quality of the work exceeded my expectations. The final cost was nearly half of what another contractor had bid, which had proposed a more complex and expensive approach.

I also wanted him to replace a bathroom fan with light. I had purchased at a local hardware store to be installed. He said he couldn't do it and wanted to just put the new light cover over the old fan in the ceiling. I told him no, I wanted the new fan installed. He said he would need to wear a haz-mat suit to go up in the attic to replace it because of my insulation. I told him it was just blown in cellulose, but we agreed to have him come later to install it. I also asked for an estimate to repair my porch ceilings. He measured but did not give me an estimate and never called me back with an estimate. Not a good company to use in my opinion so I canceled the appointment to replace the fan and called an electrician I knew to do the work.

Upon review of our performance on this project, I would have to agree that we did not meet the customer's or our expectations. We recognize that we are not perfect and we do what we can to make up for our imperfections. In this particular case we could not correct her immediate concerns so we refunded her money, apologized for any inconvenience we caused and promised to learn from our mistakes. We strive for perfection but occasionally fall short. Until we reach this level we will do what we can to make things right. Thanks Bob

It turned out their ladder wouldn't reach to one portion of the roof due to a a nearby rock wall so he came back the next day with a taller ladder and finished the job, no extra charge. I was impressed with Brad from Mr. Handyman of Bellevue. This was for a rental property that I own. I was not able to be present for the work but I was keeping in touch with the tenant. He didn't try to take advantage of that (taking longer, charging more, etc.) First off, on the bathroom ceiling change, he did a good job on a complex change. Drywall had to be cut and the mounting had to be changed to the larger size (on different parts of the drywall). The wiring also had to be adapted. He cut very cleanly and it in the end the fan looks like it's a natural fit in the room (other than looking newer than other things of course). He was quick and courteous and accommodated the cats that used the bathroom for the litterbox. He changed the dishwasher hose. It was a clean install. However, it ended up triggering a leak in another hose. He came later on his own time and fixed it for free. I really appreciated this. The CO2 detector was made quick work of -- less than 5 minutes of work. This was a nice simple item to get taken care of. Overall, it was great having Brad help on the property. I would certainly hire him again.
Description of Work: Hired Mr. Handyman to do several jobs: 1. Replace the bathroom fan with a much larger one and rewire appropriately (medium/large, skilled) 2. Replace a drain pipe from the dishwasher (small, but skilled) 3. Install a CO2 detector (small)

Bob Schmidt, the manager, came out and did a thorough estimate of our needs and was able to schedule repairs immediately to meet our time constraints. The following day, Bob the handyman arrived bright and early to begin work. During the time that he worked on the room, he did each step necessary quickly and efficiently to properly repair the problems correctly. He worked hard to do everything necessary to restore the room to functional use as quickly as possible, to professional and code standards. He put in long hours to help us meet our needs. It was amazing watching him work. He knew exactly what he was doing and the most efficient and economical way to do it. He was obviously so experienced at his work that he made it look easy, although only an experienced pro could create the finished results he achieved. And he was nice, too, in a stressful situation. Everyone at Mr. Handyman of SE Bellevue was friendly, very helpful, and explained every step of the process. They helped us in an emergency to achieve the finished result in record time. When we saw the final billing, it was exactly as estimated, and we knew we'd received great value for the fees. I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Handyman of SE Bellevue for any services they perform. We are already planning new projects to do with them. It's great to know you have someone capable you can depend on in an emergency and for any types of projects around the house.

Mr. Handyman's, Bob, showed up right on time and worked tirelessly for a solid 6 hours to complete the work. He was professional and very pleasant. He completed everything as indicated and the quality of his work very good. The only glitch to that was he didn't place two coats of paint on the repaired ceiling crack so the paint did not blend and it was very noticeable. He also left numerous Hand prints on the ceiling. It's a 14 foot ceiling and we do not have a ladder big enough to reach, so we had to get someone else to fix it the next day. He also chipped the white enamel paint on our back door during that repair. it was small and we were able to repair it. All in all, he was very consciousness and did a good job. As a company they are very knowledgeable and are honest and reliable. I would recommend them.
Description of Work: We originally requested a number of repair and paint items to be done including repairing a crack in a very high ceiling and fixing some protruding drywall tape along with repairing the front and back doors that had slipped and were difficult to open and close. We scaled back after receiving the original quote because it was much higher than I had expected. I assigned the painting work, with the exception of the ceiling cracks, to Claffeys Paint because their pricing was much more reasonable.
