Description of Work: Ryan Wilson of Ace Chimney Sweep was absolutely professional, courteous, friendly and pointed out a problem I had with my chimney. However, he took pictures and emailed them to me with a detailed explanation of the issue, and the options I had. No pressure, salesmanship, or anything like that. He made it easy to understand what he found. I have hired him to correct this, and will always continue to use his company for my future needs!

Found on Angie's List. Called and scheduled appt. time. Ryan was right on time, actually maybe a little early. He cleaned the chimney and fireplace, inspected it, found a crack in the fireplace box and fixed it. He prepared a detailed list of recommended repairs and left it up to us to fix them. No pressure. Excellent job!
Description of Work: Excellent Service! Friendly, efficient, knowledgable, clean, and inexpensive. Thank you!

The chimney sweep was very professional. Cleaned out the chimney, reassured me about the mechanisms of the flue, and made good recommendations about making the chimney safer. He sold us a chimney cap at a reasonable price and installed it. He had some trouble finding our location, but did excellent work. My husband was very positively impressed and that doesn't happen often.

that is incorporated in above explanations!!!!
Description of Work: On the initial visit, my fireplace and chimney was inspected, but was not cleaned as the contract stated. I reviewed my contact after they left and confirmed that they should have cleaned the chimney as I had paid for. I called them to report that my contract covered a cleaning, and the agent stated he realized that later and was going to call me. I asked to have my chimney capped, and they said they had some stainless steel caps, that would be around 89.00, but when they finished, they reported putting two(2) caps on a single chimney that only had one cap on it initially!! so I paid a total of 189.00 for 2 caps. I felt that they knew I did not know any better, and I was the only one home. The houses on both sides of me have single caps, and their chimneys are slightly larger than mine. The charge was exceedingly high, according to our investigation into prices elswhere. The agents were very nice and appeared to be thorough in cleaning, but I can't be sure!!!!! I would not use this company again. I am not sure I will use Angie's list referrals again!!!

Response from Ace Chimney Sweep
I am very sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the service provided. The chimney actually had two chimney caps on it originally, I still have the before picture that we showed you of the rusted out caps that were there. Two caps were required due to the fact that you have two flues coming out the top, one for your furnace, and the other for your fireplace. You could opt for one multi-flue cap but I didn't recommend that for you because you had more than enough space for two individual caps, it would have been more expensive and we even sealed between them so you wouldn't have water pouring into one another. I would have been more than happy to discuss this with you had you given me a call to avoid a negative rating. I hope this clears up your negative discern for my company.
Ryan and his assistant arrived on time which is impressive since I live on the southside and they are located on the peninsula. My chimney hadn't been cleaned since I moved in five years ago so I feel like it was a great value. Ryan's assistant was very professional and was very careful keeping my floor covered during the entire process. I was also very happy that Ryan had his truck stocked and was able to do all of the recommended repairs, crown repair, chimney cap as well as replacing of the ash door which I requested. Although I of course had to pay extra for those additional services, I felt his prices were reasonable. I'm very happy with the outcome and can now use my fireplace if I want to. Thanks!

Ryan and his team did a wonderful job. This is the second year I've asked him to clean and inspect our wood-burning chimney (we use it a lot during the cooler months.) They quickly responded to my email request to schedule an appointment, arrived promptly, carefully removed all of the odds and ends I had around my fireplace (screen, fireplace tools, wood grate). They protected the area and used their equipment to clean out the chimney and fire box. The climbed up the ladder to inspect the exterior of the chimney (at this stage last year they found significant rust damage at the roof, don't know how you'd see that without climbing up!). After cleaning, Ryan called me in to show me the cracks, and explain how they were most likely created, and offered to patch them right on the spot. For a VERY reasonable $18, he thoroughly patched the cracks and reaffixed the loose back wall in the fire box. The whole thing may need to be replaced one day, as the house is quite old, but he didn't suggest an expensive repair. We talked about types of wood to use, where to find it (neither of us had a good source!), and he carefully replaced everything that he'd removed. When they finished, only about 20 minutes later, the room looked like no one had ever been there (except for my sparkling clean fireplace). Last year, we had just moved into the house, and Ryan showed me how to operate the flue (sp?) and get the smoke moving. I would trust any recommendation he made, and would recommend him to anyone. He offers a great value, was completely responsible, and conscious of budget in his recommendations. I will definitely use Ace again next year!

We've lived in our current house for 5 years, hadn't used the fireplace, and wanted it looked at to make sure that it was in good shape. Ryan and company did a great job. They were friendly, communicative, and explained everything they did. They did a quick repair of some exposed (unsealed) brick, and they gave us a very affordable estimate for repairs to the secondary chimney. Finally, they left the living room cleaner than when they arrived. We will use them again, and soon.
Description of Work: Ace Chimney cleaned the primary chimney, sealed some areas of exposed brick, and gave us an estimate on repairs of the secondary chimney. Moreover, they provided us with pictures of what they had done inside the chimney for us to see.
No problems with the chimney cleaning/inspection and placement of the two chimney caps, but significant problems with the repairs done on 10/15. Honestly, can't speak to the quality of the work that they did do, since that is not my area of expertise, and I did not go up on to the roof to inspect it (presumably it is fine), however, I feel that we were significantly shorted on what was actually done, versus my expectations of what would be done based on our original discussion and quote. Ace did come and seal joints that were newly separated on both chimneys. They also did remove and replace the sealant around the flashing on the main chimney. They did not, however, remove and replace the old white caulking from the previously repaired joints. I pointed this out to them when they told me they were finished and I came out and saw that all of the old white caulk was still there. I distinctly remember discussing this with them during the quote process (same guy, just can't remember his name or read his signature now)- how my husband hated that white caulk from day 1, and how it will be great to get it replaced, and how I was under they impression they needed to be replaced anyway since they were no longer sealing very well. Now though, the manager/owner(?) didn't remember this discussion at all, and claimed they were sealing fine, but they could do it at another time if we wanted them to for another $150 or so. Of course, the quote was written vaguely enough that it wasn't absolutely spelled out (my bad- with our discussion as part of the context, the way I read the quote, it looked to me like it was included). In any case, he admitted that it did take him less time than he had apparently anticipated from the quote, so he gave us a $20 discount (final cost for the second visit- $260 for what I recall was about 1 hr of work, plus some specialty caulk). So, in the end, I did get new cracks filled, and sealant around my flashing replaced, but did not get the old deteriorating white calk removed and replaced.. I have not contacted the company again before writing this review, and I did not argue vigorously at the time, since that is not my personality. At this point, I don't want to have them back, even if they did offer to make amends, and I don't feel like I can trust them to do what they say. My suggestion to anyone who chooses to use this company is probaly not new to anyone directing contractors on your own- make sure that anything you contract them to do is very explicitly stated on the quote, so there is absolutely no room for interpretation at all. Again, I can't speak to the quality of what was done, but I was very disappointed in the end result.
Description of Work: Original purchase was for cleaning/inspection of chimney ($54). While there on first visit (10/1/2012), decided to purchase and have installed two chimney caps ($209). Seemed like reasonable folks, so got quote to repoint some mortar joints on the two chimneys where the joints had separated, reseal the flashing around the main chimney, and replacement of some existing poorly done repairs that were done with a white and very visible caulking (at least, this was my understanding of the quote). At the time, I was told that several of the old repairs were curling up and needed to be redone, and I wanted to have all of them removed and replaced anyway since they looked so bad, and we discussed how odd it was they would have used white caulk to repair the brick chimney. Quote was originally $280, and we scheduled the work for 10/15/2012.

They called on their way, arrived early (I had asked them to come as early as possible), and were professional, courteous, and pleasant. I had forgotten to ask about the chimney cap install before they came, but when I did they informed me they always keep 5 sizes of caps in their truck. They were in and out in no time at all, and kept everything clean while doing their dirty work! ;-) I have off white furniture in that room, and not a spot was on it. I am very satisfied, and looking forward to a wonderful winter where we can use our beautiful fireplace again. I would call them again if I ever need help with chimney issues in the future.
Description of Work: I received a complete chimney cleaning - which was a lot of work because we didnt have a chimney cap so a lot of leaves, twigs, and other stuff got in there. I also had them install a chimney cap (we had birds joining us, too). They put in a stainless steel cap with a lifetime warranty. They also inspected the chimney for safety, and answered our questions regarding converting to a wood burning fireplace.

They did a great job. He called me back immediately, answered the phone when I called to make sure they were coming that day (and actually, they were running ahead of schedule, so I got to be seen earlier which was great!). Very professional, left things very clean, recommended a chimney cap to keep leaves and water out, but with no pressure to do it - told me the pros and cons of doing it. I would definitely use them again. Plus, the wood stove cleaning was only $10 extra, versus higher prices that I've seen elsewhere.

After purchasing the service the The Big Deal website, I was contacted by Ryan within just a few hours to schedule the cleaning. He was very flexible with my schedule, which was very nice. They arrived right on time and were very professional, but also friendly. Ryan and Travis did a great job -- my fireplace looks brand new. I feel much better going into the burning season knowing my chimey, etc. is clean and defect free. I have already recommended Ryan and Ace Chimney Sweep to friends and will continue to do so.

Description of Work: We first used Ace Chimney Sweep because we purchased a coupon to have our fireplace cleaned and inspected from Angie's List. They came out to do the work. They were on time and cleaned up very well after finishing their work. We informed them we were purchasing some gas logs and asked them what we would need to do to get our fireplace/chimney ready for the logs. They came back out today to perform the work needed on our chimney. They were on time did a great job and were polite and great to work with. They are very professional and we will call them again if we have any problems. We highly recommend them and the services they offer- I would give them a grade of A+

They did a very good job. He told me that the damper was open and there was a bit of rust on the cap but that it would not need to be replaced for a couple of years. He said the chimney was in great shape. I bought this service from Angies big deals and thought that Ryan would try and sell me something. Just the opposite. He was professional and totally cleaned up behind him. Will call him again and pass his company name on to friends.

First, let me say that I wasn't home when Ace Chimney sweeps came by, but my wife was. It is an understatement when I say that she is not a person that is easy to impress because she has seen first hand the mistakes I have made hiring someone to do some work for me that wasn't on Angie's List. This however was not the case. The gentlemen from Ace were polite, professional, expeditious, and very maticulous at cleaning up after themselves. I can't remember the last time my fireplace was that clean. They also inspected my chimney inside and out, and informed my wife that there was a piece of flashing up on top that needed to be replaced. He took a picture of it, and emailed an estimate to me. I appreciate the job that was done so well, but I am impressed at the extra mile that he went to. I have rarely heard my wife give a complement to someone's work, so congradulations is to you Ace Chimney Sweeps, you impressed my wife and me!

We haven't used the fireplace in 6 years but there was nothing wrong with it. So, I wanted it cleaned and inspected. I called this guy and he came right away. He came with another guy and did the work. When he was finished from one side, he said the chimney wasn't open all the way. He said he would need to clean from the top to the bottom and it would be $240. But, instead he broke open the blockage and said that would work. Once he left, I started a fire and the smoke came back in the house worse than before I had him. He should have been honest with me and not told me that it would work by breaking the blockage. I called him and asked him to come back. He said he didn't touch the door and I should try to close it. He refused to come back and refused any responsibility. I have tried to call him two more times, but he is ignoring my calls.

Response from Ace Chimney Sweep
When we arrived at this customers house, we set up for a chimney sweep. She informed me that when she has tried to use it in the past she always got smoke back into the room. Upon inspection of the system I realized that the damper only open a very little bit, approx. 4 inches. I (tried to) inform her that the way the firebox is built up and angled forward, combined with a very small damper housing opening that she is going to have a very hard time getting this chimney to draw. We swept the chimney because there was a fair amount of build-up in the smoke chamber and flue. After cleaning and inspecting the entire system I offered her some advice on fixing the issues. One of the things I said could help with her issue was removing the damper and going with a top damper instead, that would open up the smoke chamber a little bit and allow adequate draw for the smoke. I told her other options that could help included removing the damper housing, because even with the damper being removed it still didn't open up the damper housing enough in my opinion. But that would also cost more money since we would actually have to cut it out and it would be quite a bit of work ($240). I was just trying to help with her smoke back issue so she could have a usable fireplace. She said that she didn't have the money to put into it which I understand, so I offered to remove her damper for her temporarily till she can afford the top damper and possibly the other work that way she can try to use the fireplace. I did this for free, did not break it, but removed it properly so it can be put back in if need be. But as stated before, this only opened up the damper housing a little bit, so now she has about 4-4 1/2 inches space for the smoke to get up through the firebox and out through the smoke chamber and flue. When we were packing up, I noticed her fireplace doors were hard to open and close so I lubricated all the joints and the track that the doors slide on to make it easier to use. That's all we did. There was no blockage removed, no additional fee's for cleaning (I actually gave her 10% off my normal fee because she was an Angie's List member) so I really don't know where she is getting that information. Well a few hours go by and I get a call from her in a panic because she tried to fire up the fireplace and was getting a lot of smoke back into the room. And that when she opened her fireplace doors that she got them stuck. This was an 80 degree day. I informed her that it is a good rule of thumb for it to be colder outside than inside the home for the chimney to draw correctly, she argued this saying I was looking for excuses not to help her. She wanted me to come back out that day and check it out again which at that time I couldn't because I had a full day of scheduled jobs. I squeezed her into a time slot that day only because I had a cancellation that day. I told her it would be a couple of days since I schedule whole days where I am on the Southside. I tried to schedule another time to come out to her home but she wouldn't, she wanted me out that day or else (her words). She got really ugly with me and started yelling at me, telling me that I messed up her fireplace and am responsible for it smoking back and that I need to get back over there immediately. I offered suggestions and tried to help her as much as I could but it was no use. She called me four more times that day, which I answered each of them, with her saying the same thing over and over calling me names and being very rude with me. It finally led to the point where I told her that getting another opinion on her system is in her best interests and to call someone else for her chimney work. I didn't do anything wrong by this lady and even went above and beyond to help her but she wouldn't have it.The last thing I want is an upset customer as I pride myself on being up front and honest with everyone.

Arrived on time as scheduled. Cheerfully and efficiently got straight to work. Took digital photos of the inside of the chimney and areas up on the roof, so he could explain his recommendations for repairs and upgrades. There was no pressure to get me to schedule the recommended repairs, but I plan to have Ace do the work. They were in and out in about an hour and left the work site clean and in order. They even got along with my dogs and cat. I highly recommend Ace Chimney Sweeps.
