I initially met with Jeff to discuss foundation repointing. We went around the house and I showed him the mortar cracks that I wanted to be repointed. We initally had an appointment the day after Labor Day, but due to inclement weather it was postponed. After that, it wasn't clear to me when they might be coming and I needed to be home from work as there was some inside work as well. While I was waiting, I was surprised on one of the rainly days when I heard men in my yard and opened the door to find Jeff and one of his crew near my front steps discussing the job. I think a courtesy call would be nice if you are going to be on a client's property unexpectedly. On the second week, Jeff did call me to give me a date. When the crew came, they were professional and I was satisfied with the work done, however, they missed one area that Jeff and I had discussed duing our initial meeting. When he called me that night to follow up on the work, I told him about it. He stated that I had not shown him that area. He wanted me to leave a check for him to pick up the next day. When I insisted that I had shown him that crack, he stated, "I don't know why you are going all crazy on me." I told him that it was unprofessional for him to say that and he finally agreed to send someone to fix it in the morning, but that he would expect me to leave a check. I told him that I would pay him when I got home from work if the work had been completed. He texted me several times that evening regarding payment. I stated again that I wanted to see it before payment and that I would like an invoice left when the workman came the next day. He texted later that the reason he had been "short" with me was that I was the fifth person that day that had requested an invoice without giving him a deposit (he had never mentioned a deposit before this). Later he texted asking for my zip code and said that the invoice was on its way. The work was completed on the missed crack the next day and I received the invoice two days later in the mail. It was for $40.00 more than the quote. I mailed a check for the original amount with a note. Jeff called me today, stated that he appreciated doing business with me and that he would send me a corrected invoice. Although the work was finally completed in a satisfactory manner, I will not work with this company again as dealing with the owner was just too stressful.
Description of Work: Repointing of several cracks in mortar of brick house and brick retaining walls.

Overall Mottern Masonry did a fantastic job. They were prompt, quoted a reasonable price, worked very hard and effectively, did everything that they said they would do and more, wasted no time, were very responsive to our requests, and gave us a clean, thorough, and complete repair to our home. We cannot recommend them highly enough. They treated us as though we were their only customers. They do excellent work.
Description of Work: The August 23, 2011 earthquake that struck our area damaged our 1952 brick and block home. Jose and Marlin of Mottern Masonry ground out, chistled out, and remortared all the areas around the bricks and cement blocks that the earthquake damaged. Thank goodness we didn't have any structural damage, just cracking of the old mortar. After the earthquake, we had identified numerous areas of our home and garage that the earthquake had damaged. But Jose and Marlin, with their trained eyes, found other areas that were also damaged. They took care of these additional areas, also, at no change to the original estimate. We also have high, outer back stairs and a stairwell that needed total reparging. Jose and Marlin had to rip off the crumbling old mortar, prepare the walls, and reparge. The job is beautiful! Both of these masons really know their work. They are very hard working, conscientious and diligent. Jose and Marlin immaculately cleaned up all of the area around our home and within the garage, cleaning away all of the dust, and carting away the large and small broken pieces of masonry that would otherwise have littered the area. When they left, everything was in perfect order! Jeff, the owner of Mottern Masonry, was always prompt with any call backs that were necessary. He is most courteous and was always on time for his appointments. He was extremely accommodating in fitting our job into his other obligations. He gave us a very reasonable estimate for all the work that had to be done. We couldn't be more pleased with the work of his company. We have already recommended him and his crew. As far as we're concerned, "we've now found a mason!" whom we'll use in the future as the occasion arises.

Mr. Mottern arrived promptly after being contacted for a free estimate for the job. He provided several options for the completion of the job that ranged in price. The lowest price was for a traditional concrete driveway, the middle option was for a stamped concrete driveway, and the most expensive option was for individual paver driveway. I was not familiar with stamped concrete so I went on the internet to do some research. I then selected a stamped concrete driveway and a traditional concrete carport slab. Mr. Mottern's price appeared to be the best value for my money. Mr. Mottern then went over the schedule with me and all the steps that would be taken to complete the job. Mr. Mottern's approach matched all the best practices for construction of a stamped concrete driveway that I had found on the internet. He also told me that he could save me money by only replacing the cracked portion of the carport slab. He started the following day. Mr. Mottern's crew arrived on time each day of construction and adhered to the scheduled Mr. Mottern had previously laid out. The crew was knowledgeable, quick, and efficient. Mr. Mottern himself stopped by frequently to check on how things were going. He was always available to answer any questions that I might have. The only complication arose when I had to go out of town for a family emergency in the middle of the construction. I briefed my daughter who lives in the area on what was to be done and requested she check on the progress and advise me by phone of any problems. She maintained contact with Mr. Mottern and his crew and and advised me by phone, sometimes sending pictures, of the progress. I returned home to a beautiful new driveway and a new carport slab.
Description of Work: Replaced existing asphalt driveway with stamped concrete driveway and replaced cracked carport concrete slab.

Jeff returned my phone call immediately and was able to schedule a crew to start three days later. I thought the price was very fair and thought his laborers were very conscientious, helpful, and hard working. The worked in the rain to get the job done, esp important since I worry about flooding. To the best of my knowledge, the blocked in foundation seems very solid and well done -- I rated it down a hair since, unlike decorative work, it's a little hard to judge quality, though this is no knock on Jeff's work. We would certainly give him a call again for future stone and masonry work.
Description of Work: We had Jeff remove a basement door, block in the entryway in the foundation, and fill in the stairwell to eliminate flooding issues.

The initial contact was done via phone and e-mail as I was out of town when the owner, Jeff Mottern was able to stop by to write up an estimate. Jeff provided me with a written quote for the work that I wanted to have done and didn't try to sell me anything, but rather presented options based on what he found during his examination. Everything was finalized via e-mail and phone calls. Their price was very competitive based on the quotes I obtained. On the scheduled day the work was due to begin, he and his teams showed up exactly on time. The team worked under hot high humidity conditions over two days to finish the job on time. I was having guests the following weekend and needed the repairs done on time. The team doing the work was professional and delivered a quality product. The clean up was great with no bricks or trash left around the house and they did not tear up the lawn during their work. The brick used to match the original 50 year old brick was very close to the original. When I eventually replace the sidewalk on my house Mottern Masonry will be at the top of my list of firms to get a price quote from.
Description of Work: Replaced about 100 bricks in my chimney that had cracked or lost their protective coating. Rebuilt two walls that were falling apart on each side of my porch. Repaired and replaced steps and walkway on my flag stone walkway, after chipping out the old cement. Cut out and replaced about 10 bricks around the house that had cracked. Removed a duplicate dryer vent and sealed up the hole with new bricks. Replaced a cement chimney cap.

I thought the stoop needed repointing but Mr. Motern suggested patching. We replaced a cement sidewalk that had cracked from tree roots and installed a brick edge to our townhouse front garden. They were able to match the mortar perfectly and installed the edging so that it built off of the neighbor's brickwork. The cement pad was sloping badly and they regraded the section so that the water flows off and it meets the bottom of the brick stoop without a gap. The crew brought the wrong color mortar for the install and went back to get the correct color. I was impressed with their work ethic and quality of service. Several neighbors picked up their contact information to have work done on their townhomes.
Description of Work: We needed our front stoop repaired - mortar was breaking down between the bricks and the ants had moved into the stoop.

It was a pleasure doing business with Jeff Mottern. He was prompt in responding to phone calls, quick in coming out to look at the job and in coming back with an estimate. The work was started and completed on time The walkway he installed is beautiful. He matched the bricks exactly to those he replaced. We like his design much more than the original. We feel his price was very competitive and well worth what we paid. The work area was spotless when the workmen left. All dealings with Jeff and his company were most positive. There were no negatives at all. I will definitely pass his name on to family and friends. In fact, everyone who sees it comments on how nice it looks.

I requested an estimate for repair of parging that has failed in a stairwell. While Mottern Masonry Design was prompt in visiting when I reviewed the estimate I realized the price was unreasonable . A second estimate was 600 dollars below what Mottern masonry proposed. Needless to say they are overpriced and will not deal with them again.

Response from Mottern Masonry Design
We quoted the member as any of our customers would be quoted. We gave him a price for reeparging of a stairwell wall that was done improperly of $890 dollars. We go above and beyond to see that our customers are treated with great care and fairly. We showed up with our information packet and Company logo shirts. We're extremely professional and asked the member if there was anything or any questions he may have to let us know and we would assist in any way we could. We have a report with the same type repair for a the member here on angies list, with exception to row of brick on top to be replaced and was quoted at $1,100 and had several prices similar to ours. Believe it's report number 56 on page 12. We will continue to provide services as best as possible as long as we continue in our industry.

I am very pleased with the services--both the finished work and process-- of Jeff Mottern's company. Just eight days from proposal to completion of work. I am preparing my house to sell and have limited time. Jeff was able to fit our project into his schedule over the holiday week. His proposal allowed me to make the best use of my funds to improve the appearance and functionality of my house. Jeff came regularly to the house to instruct the foremen and kept in touch with them and me throughout the week. He was always available by cell phone and email, responding almost immediately to any questions or concerns. His frequent email updates allowed me to always know what work would be done each day. His masonry workers were skilled, experienced and pleasant to have on the job. The stamped concrete patio has the look of stone and is a great improvement over the old patio. When water pooled in one area due to some irregularities of my older house that had settled unevenly, Jeff and his staff studied the problem and figured out how to create a drain to solve the problem. Jeff assured me that he would make it right to my satisfaction, and he did. The flagstone front porch, step and threshold have given the front of the house a much needed facelift. The stone blends well with the existing stone-faced wall and brick. The stones of various hues and sizes were placed in an attractive pattern and cut neatly around existing pillars. All in all, it was easy to work with Jeff and his staff. I had no experience with this type of home improvement and so I chose to trust Jeff's plan and work. I am glad I did. I would definitely use his company again and recommend him to others. As a side note: An experienced realtor recently looked at my new patio and asked,"Who did this? It is exactly what my daughter needs at her house."
Description of Work: Replaced broken concrete patio with a new stamped concrete patio. Cleaned moss off chimneys, replaced one cap, repaired pointing, and put screens on to keep bugs out. Removed walkway of pavers and replaced with stepping stopes. Covered concrete front porch and threshold with flagstone. Built a new step and covered with flagstone.

They did a great job. I had this work performed by a previous mason and Jeff sent his crew over to fix the mess made by the other mason. The estimate was done right away and the work was completed quickly and without drama. When he finished it looked great and was well done. I would highly recommend Mottern Masonry Design.

This project ended up being for removal of an old brick walkway and brick pavers covering a concrete stoop and replacement with a new installation. Jeff Mottern came for an estimate on repair of the old installation on Friday, 06 May 2011. he was very open about the condition of the walk and the pros and cons of repair versus replacement along with the associated costs. After discussion, I made the decision to replace the old walkway and stoop in its entirety. Jeff's crew arrived to begin work on Tuesday, 10 May and the entire project was completed by Thursday, 12 May. This was the fastest I have ever had any job completed by a contractor. The work performed was excellent and they took great care to minimize any impact to the yard, shrubbery beds and house. Jeff was a constant presence on the site, supervising and assisting. The job couldn't have gone any better or faster and I felt it was an extremely good price.

They arrived pvery early on 4/21 and completed the construction before the end of the day. They worked efficiently and extremely neatly, ending with total cleanup of the site. A few days later they wash down the brick and virtually polished them, the results were very beautiful!
Description of Work: Our front steps and landing were deteriorating because of the freeze-thaw action on the poor quality of the mortar used by another company, who built them 2 years ago. The bricks were coming loose, creating a dangerous situation. Mottern came on 4/5 to examine the situation and proposed several alternatives for replacement--including flagstone--and we chose replacement of the brick with high-strength cement. Itr took a couple of weeks to get on their schedule.

I haven't yet received the estimate but the estimate visit alone gave me a lot of confidence in this company. I have already had several contractors provide estimates for the retaining wall repairs...repairs the guy who came out today told me were not only unnecessary, but would be a waste of money. He explained which work was essential, which might improve the aesthetics, and which would be a complete waste of money. I appreciated his honesty and also appreciated the time he took to explain the rationale behind each of his recommendations. I also REALLY appreciated the fact that he was clearly NOT out to sell me any services I didn't truly need AND offered many helpful suggestions on work my kids and I could do ourselves atlow- to no-cost but elbow grease. I'll update after I receive the estimate but based on today's visit I wouldn't hesitate to hire this company or recommend them to others.

In conjunction with the sale of our home, the purchaser had a home inspection which revealed that the mortar on our all-brick townhome needed repair. We were working under a tight deadline, so we needed a masonry company that could provide a timely estimate and start the work right away. We contacted Mottern Masonry via their on-line request form and Jeff Mottern called us the very next day and came by later the same day to provide an estimate. The work was completed by the end of the week and would have been done sooner had the weather been warmer. Mottern Masonry provided quick, professional service at a fair price. We would definitely recommend Mottern Masonry for their responsiveness and for their excellent work. In fact, we already recommended them to two of our co-workers. We feel we paid a fair price for the wok and for the speed and quality of their work.

It was excellent. He was incredibly honest. He didn't try to sell me services that I didn't need. He told me the truth even when it was a disadvantage to him. Had both my chimneys cleaned that morning by a chimney sweep and was told that one of the chimneys was in danger of "falling onto the house" and that I'd better get it repaired ASAP, and told me it would cost me $3,500 to totally rebuild chimney. Also, told me the other chimney was fine. I then looked on Angie's List and found Mr. Mottern. After he returned my call, he was at my home within ten minutes to give me an estimate. They were here two days later, today, and Mr. Mottern also told me my other chimney was cracked and needed mortar repair and concrete cap ( I had not asked him to look at that chimney when he came for estimate, as chimney sweep said that chimney was fine), which they did at no extra charge. They were here as scheduled, on time. The man worked hard, cleaned up when finished, was courteous, did a wonderful job. Was refreshing to see an honest and fair company owner. After he returned my call, he was at my home within ten minutes to give me an estimate.
Description of Work: Repair crack in chimney brick, 27 brick rows down from top. Remove concrete cap, which was very thin, and replace with one-inch-thick concrete, grind loose mortar all around and replace with new mortar. Grind cracks in bricks and place mortar in cracks.

That was excellent. Their quote was firm. There was no variance from the quote. It was high quality. They started and finished on time. They were gone and n issues at all. They had some creative suggestions for my back yard. They could have bricked it all but that would have been expensive. They came up with using paving stones to be less expensive and would fit the surroundings.
